User Generated Content (Ugc) On Douyin And The Great Wall Cannon Branding Strategy, Runzhi Shi

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This study investigates the impact of User-Generated Content (UGC) on brand communication, focusing on the viral "Great Wall Cannon" case on Douyin, a leading short-video platform in China. Existing research predominantly emphasizes Western platforms and lacks in-depth analysis of UGC's role within China's unique cultural and regulatory framework, leaving a gap in understanding its potential for brand marketing. Using qualitative methods, including content analysis, semi-structured interviews, and secondary data review, this research examines how UGC enhances brand visibility, shapes consumer perceptions, and builds emotional connections. The proposed approach highlights the strengths of leveraging Douyin's algorithm-driven content dissemination and authentic user …

News Media Coverage Of Court Matters Involving Children In Kenya., Lenox Omondi Otieno

Master of Arts in Digital Journalism

The pivotal role of news media as the fourth estate in society cannot be overstated; it profoundly influences public opinion, shapes perceptions, and mirrors a nation's values. Much like in other countries, in Kenya, media assumes a central role in reporting legal proceedings, especially those involving children. The manner in which these events are covered carries significant consequences, directly impacting the welfare and rights of the children concerned. This study critically examines the news media's coverage of court proceedings involving children in Kenya, focusing on mainstream television channels, namely Citizen TV, NTV, and KTN News, owing to their substantial viewership. …

Investigating The Impact Of Digital Transformation On Legacy Media In Uganda: The Case Of New Vision Newspaper., Francis Kagolo

Executive Masters in Media Leadership and Innovation

This study sought to investigate the impact of digital transformation on legacy media in Uganda, using the leading English newspaper, New Vision, as a case study. New Vision's attempts to monetise digital content face …

Effects Of Dehumanization And Disgust-Eliciting Language On Attitudes Toward Immigration: A Sentiment Analysis Of Twitter Data, Katherine S. Wahrer, Cynthia J. Najdowski, John V. Passarelli 2024 University at Albany, State University of New York

Effects Of Dehumanization And Disgust-Eliciting Language On Attitudes Toward Immigration: A Sentiment Analysis Of Twitter Data, Katherine S. Wahrer, Cynthia J. Najdowski, John V. Passarelli

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

Attitudes towards immigration have been shown to be driven by dehumanization and disgust. The more people dehumanize immigrants and the more disgusted they feel, the more negative attitudes they tend to have toward immigrants. However, little is known about how exposure to social media content that links dehumanization, disgust, and immigration influences users’ attitudes on this issue. This is important to consider because the majority of adults in the United States are on social media. We used Twitter data, machine learning, and sentiment analysis to investigate whether exposure to dehumanizing or disgust-eliciting tweets about immigration impacts users’ own sentiment toward …

Fairness And Fair Use In Generative Ai, Matthew Sag 2024 Emory University School of Law

Fairness And Fair Use In Generative Ai, Matthew Sag

Faculty Articles

Although we are still a long way from the science fiction version of “artificial general intelligence” that thinks, feels, and refuses to “open the pod bay doors,” recent advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) have captured the public’s imagination and lawmakers’ interest. We now have large language models (LLMs) that can pass the bar exam, carry on (what passes for) a conversation about almost any topic, create new music, and create new visual art. These artifacts are often indistinguishable from their human-authored counterparts and yet can be produced at a speed and scale surpassing human ability.

“Generative AI” …

Cyberbullying: Media Construction And Framing Tactics In Pakistan, Asma Jamal 2024 Wilfrid Laurier University

Cyberbullying: Media Construction And Framing Tactics In Pakistan, Asma Jamal

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis critically examines the portrayal of cyberbullying within Pakistan's top three newspapers, focusing on how these media outlets shape public discourse over the past five years. Employing an integrated approach using framing analysis and Fairclough’s Three-Dimensional Model, my research deconstructs how these newspapers utilize specific framing strategies to construct a narrative that not only informs but also subtly influences public perception and policy responses. The findings show that while the media highlights the roles of parents, educators, and law enforcement in combating cyberbullying, it also tends to reinforce traditional gender roles and overlook systemic solutions. I argue that the …

The Parasocial Experiences Of Twitch Streamers, Ashley Adamian 2024 Columbus State University

The Parasocial Experiences Of Twitch Streamers, Ashley Adamian

Theses and Dissertations

The literature surrounding parasocial relationships (PSRs) has been expansive but lacks the perspective of how parasocial relationships can impact the media figure in certain contexts, specifically in regard to Twitch livestreamers and their communities. Previous research has examined how PSRs fulfill certain roles in the individual’s life, as well as some aspects that affect the relationship, such as the strength and development of the relationship. Previous research has concluded that stronger PSRs can develop from livestreaming platforms such as Twitch. This study investigates the relationship between Twitch livestreamers and PSRs. Through semi-structured interviews with seven participants, this study finds the …

Exploring The Impact Of Digital And Social Media On Recruiting Georgia High School Football Players By Ncaa Division 1 Universities In Georgia, Justin Phillips

Theses and Dissertations

Social and digital media integration has revolutionized the landscape of college football recruiting, offering innovative tools and strategies to enhance recruitment. Modern technology, including platforms such as X and Hudl, facilitates direct communication between high school athletes and college coaches. At the same time, companies like Route and RosterSpot employ data science and machine learning to optimize player-college matches. These technologies enable coaches to discover talent more efficiently and foster a personalized athlete recruiting experience (Booton, 2020). Additionally, social networking sites like Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat have become essential tools in the NCAA recruiting process, allowing for real-time updates, extensive …

Towards Interpretable Propaganda Detection In News Text Through The Use Of Rhetorical Devices As Features, Kyle Hamilton 2024 Technological University Dublin

Towards Interpretable Propaganda Detection In News Text Through The Use Of Rhetorical Devices As Features, Kyle Hamilton

Doctoral

This doctoral thesis presents research undertaken towards interpretable propaganda detection in news text. Propaganda and mis/disinformation in the media have been identified in the social sciences literature as a major threat to the functioning of democratic society. While mis/disinformation is false by definition, propaganda is intended to modify the beliefs and behaviors of the information consumer but does not have to be false. Propagandistic text is often characterized by the use of rhetorical devices and linguistic style designed to exploit the reader’s cognitive and emotional biases. One way of counteracting this effect is by shifting the focus from “what” is …
