In order to predict behavior in organizations, it is important to understand and to consider both the individual employee and his/her interaction with the physical work environment. The main purpose of this research was to gather evidence of the validity of the Human Factors Satisfaction Questionnaire (HFSQ) in order to provide a tool with which employees' preceptions of several elements of their physical work environments can be measured. The physical work environment and its relationship to both organization theory and motivation theory is discussed. Previous research (cf. Wickens, Mountford & Schreiner, 1981; Wickens & Sandry, 1982) has suggested that performance is facilitated by maintaining "integrity" between the hemisphere of information input, processing, and motor response. This task-hemispheric integrity has been found to exist during concurrent performance of verbal and spatial tasks, both of which are presented in a visual modality. The present study sought to examine whether task-hemispheric integrity exists during concurrent performance of a verbal and a spatial task when the verbal task is presented in an auditory modality and the spatial task(s) are presented in a visual modality. Multidimensional Scaling Analysis Of Simulated Air Combat Maneuvering Performance Data, Donald J. Polzella, Gary B. Reid

This paper describes the decomposition of air combat maneuvering by means of multidimensional scaling (MDS). MDS analyses were applied to performance data obtained from expert and novice pilots during simulated air-to-air combat. The results of these analyses revealed that the performance of expert pilots is characterized by advantageous maneuverability and intelligent energy management. It is argued that MDS, unlike simpler metrics, permits the investigator to achieve greater insights into the underlying structure associated with performance of a complex task.

This report was prepared in response to a request by the Human Factors Committee of the National Research Council to aid its deliberations regarding a standardized definition of human factors. Though many variations of definitions abound, a formally endorsed unified definition of the field does not exist. CSERIAC's approach to this query was to compile and analyze definitions of human factors (and related terms) from a range of key resource materials and present them in a manner to expedite the Committee's consideration of a unified definition. Multidimensional Scaling Analysis Of Simulated Air Combat Maneuvering Performance Data Ii: A Follow-On Study, Donald J. Polzella, Gary B. Reid

Multidimensional scaling (MDS) was applied to performance data obtained from expert and novice pilots during simulated air-to-air combat. The analyses revealed the principal performance dimensions to be TACTICAL POSITION (offensive versus defensive), TACTICS ("energy" versus "angle"), and TYPE OF MANEUVERING (low energy versus high energy). High-skilled combat performance was found to be dependent on the interaction between position advantage, intelligent management of kinetic and potential energies, and maneuverability.

Past research has neglected irrelevant dimensions of visual warning signals in choice reaction-time tasks. The present study examined the effects of an irrelevant dimension of a visual warning signal and that signal's value in predicting a response stimulus on choice reaction time. A warning signal, which was a geometric figure, appeared in the center of a VDT screen and was followed by one of two response stimuli (open circles). The predictive value of the warning signal was defined as the percentage of trials during which the warning signal accurately predicted the response stimulus by size and was manipulated in the …

The present study was conducted to determine design principles for menu-based natural language (MBNL) interfaces and to provide evidence for the nature of visual search processes with menu-based systems. The effects of window size, window activity, and query length were investigated. Window size was manipulated as a between-subjects variable with three levels representing a sixteen-item window size, an eight-item window size, and a four-item window size. Modern aircrew training devices (ATDs) are equipped with sophisticated hardware and software capabilities, known as advanced instructional features (AIFs), that permit a simulator instructor to prepare briefings, manage training, vary task difficulty/fidelity, monitor performance, and provide feedback for flight simulation training missions. The utility and use of the AIF capabilities of Air Force ATDs were explored by means of a survey of 534 simulator instructors from Air Training Command, Military Airlift Command, Strategic Air Command, and Tactical Air Command training sites. The primary purpose of the present research was a develop a complex aptitude test to assess individual differences in multiple cognitive and perceptual abilities that are required for helicopter pilot training. The paper-and-pencil test was designed to provide measures of both static and dynamic (i.e., learning) ability under different levels of complexity. The secondary research purpose was to develop a battery of eight psychometric tests to assess other abilities that are required for helicopter pilot training. The University of Dayton has been exploring the feasibility of establishing a software usability testing laboratory. Usability refers to the ease-of-use of a system, and usability testing is performed to ensure that systems meet the criteria established to determine ease of use. Usability assessment involves both the measurement of user performance and user satisfaction.

An Aircrew Training Device (ATD) is not merely a flight simulator. It is also equipped with sophisticated hardware and software capabilities, known as advanced instructional features (AIFs), that permit a flight crew instructor to control, monitor, and record flight simulation training sessions. A survey conducted at five of the principal Tactical Air Command ATD sites revealed that few instructors receive extensive training in AIF use and that most features are not used very often. Several factors appear to have contributed to the low rate of AIF use. Since the work of Fitts and his colleagues, researchers have been using eye-movement data to evaluate various aspects of pilot instrument scanning behavior. Although Senders' work indicated that link values and transitional probabilities could be accurately predicted using a random sampling process, several investigators have recently suggested that pilot scanning behavior was deterministic. However, there has been no clear empirical evidence to support a deterministic hypothesis. Researchers in the area of rater training have relied almost exclusively on rater error measures to assess training effectiveness. A reduction in rater tendency to commit these errors subsequent to training is viewed as evidence that these raters have become more accurate in rating their employees. This assumed relationship between rater errors and rating accuracy has recently been questioned. This uncertain relationship between psychometric errors and accuracy was the focus of the current research effort. This document analyzes the relationship between college environment scales and social class perceptions among students. CUES (College and University Environment Scales) measures five aspects: Practicality, Scholarship, Community, Awareness, and Propriety. Each scale assesses different features of the college environment. Developed to provide insights into students' perceptions of their college experiences.

The study concludes that perceptions of college environments are relatively uniform across different social classes. Highlights the need for further research on the influence of social class on college experiences.

The purpose of this research was to study the patterns and problems of drinking among men at a Midwestern university. The primary method used in the study was a questionnaire given to a cross-section of the male student body. The study was designed to determine the extent of drinking at the university. Such factors as the frequency and locality of drinking were investigated. Attitudes concerning college drinking were also explored. Finally, the study was concerned with problems associated with the use of alcohol by students.
