The internet has profoundly changed how we produce, use and collect research and information for public policy and practice, with grey literature playing an increasingly important role. The authors argue that grey literature (i.e. material produced and published by organisations without recourse to the commercial or scholarly publishing industry) is a key part of the evidence produced and used for public policy and practice. Through surveys of users, producing organisations and collecting services a detailed picture is provided of the importance and economic value of grey literature. The Linked Open Data Cloud project at present is the major effort to implement the concepts of the Seamtic Web, addressing the problems of in homogeneity and large data volumes. Data narratives or data stories have emerged as a new form of the scholarly communication focused on data. In this paper, we explore the potential value of data narratives and the requirements for data stories to enhance scholarly communication. We examine three types of data stories that form a continuum from the less to the more structured: the DataONE data stories, the Data Curation Profiles, and the Data Descriptors from the journal Scientific Data. Linking publications to published datasets in repositories is an important part of the research lifecycle. However, merely linking them does not ensure reusability. It is important for repositories to develop and provide policies for preservation that support the reusability, including lifecycle, ownership, versioning, and attribution aspects of the scholarly process (Bechhofer et al., 2013). Assuming that students no longer read printed handouts, many librarians have stopped producing printed handouts after observing the piles of paper that remain after library sessions. Libraries have transitioned comfortably to providing online access to handout information via subject and course guides, and now need to make a more complete transition to making them mobile. Although only four in ten college students own a tablet, 75% own a smart phone, and over a third of students intend to purchase either a tablet or a smart phone in the next six months. This article outlines the collaboration between librarians at the Graduate Center Library of the City University of New York (CUNY) and JustPublics@365 (http://justpublics365.commons.gc.cuny.edu/about/), an initiative designed to open scholarly communication in ways that connect to social justice activism, part of which involved producing an open, online interdisciplinary course with a geographical focus on East Harlem. The Inter Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), a domain repository with a 50 50-year track record of archiving social and behavioural science data, applied for for—and acquired acquired—the Data Seal of Approval (DSA) in 2010. DSA is a non non-intrusive, straightforward approach to assessing organizational, technical, and operational infrastructure infrastructure, and signifies a basic level of accreditation . DSA assessment helped ICPSR become more transparent , monitor and improve archival processes and procedures , and raise awareness within the organization and beyond about best practice practices for repositories repositories. The legacy of the International Polar Year 2007 2007–2008 (IPY) includes advances in open data and meaningful progress toward towards interoperability of data, systems, and standards. Enabled by metadata brokering technologies and by the growing adoption of international metadata standards, federated data search welcomes diversity in Arctic data and recognizes the value of expertise in community data repositories repositories. Federated search enables specialized data holdings to be discovered by broader audiences and complements the role of metadata registries such as the Global Change Master Directory, providing interoperability across the Arctic web-of -repositories.

The speaker is a faithful user of open access materials in her profession and also provides open access to the College’s Archives and Special Collections through the Archives’ website, Crossworks and the Internet Archive. However, it wasn’t until she was accepted into the American Needlepoint Guild’s Master Needlework Artist Program that she developed a deep appreciation for unrestricted online access to primary source documents. In The Three Hats of Sarah Campbell, Ms. Campbell will discuss how the discovery of one online resource made her truly invested in the cause of open access.
