Houston Is On The Right Side Of The Tracks, Andrew Ryle
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Houston, Texas has long been plagued by urban and suburban sprawl. Political leadership in Houston has worked hard to improve the economy using several levers available to them. One area the city attempts to improve is that of public transit. The city has developed a large fixed-rail transit system in separate stages since 2004 when the first 7.5 mile stretch of the Harris County Metropolitan Authority fixed light rail, the METRORail, opened. The system has since grown, mostly Eastward, to 22.7 miles and 34 stations, with further expansion planned. I use data on real estate values and property characteristics provided …
Small Commercial And Industrial Electricity Consumption In Las Cruces, New Mexico, Andrew Taylor Yurachek
Small Commercial And Industrial Electricity Consumption In Las Cruces, New Mexico, Andrew Taylor Yurachek
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Research examining small commercial and industrial electricity usage patterns have historically received less attention than residential electricity consumption patterns. This study examines electricity as an input to commercial and industrial production in Las Cruces, New Mexico using annual frequency data from 1978 to 2018. Those data examined include labor, per capita personal income, price measures for electricity and natural gas, and weather variables. The long-run and short-run elasticities of the data are then estimated using an autoregressive distributed lag model (ARDL). In the long run, CIS customers in Las Cruces respond to natural gas a complimentary good, and the derived-demand …
Cash Transfers And Temptation Goods: An Analysis On The Impact Of Cash Transfers On Poor Households’ Consumption Of Sugar-Sweetened Beverages In The Philippines, Janelle S. Tiu, Vince Eisen C. Yao
Cash Transfers And Temptation Goods: An Analysis On The Impact Of Cash Transfers On Poor Households’ Consumption Of Sugar-Sweetened Beverages In The Philippines, Janelle S. Tiu, Vince Eisen C. Yao
Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)
Sugar intake has been increasing globally and locally for individuals. Meanwhile, Philippine institutions continue to provide cash transfers (CTs) to poor households. Past literature found varying results of the impact of transfers on expenditure, consumption, and temptation goods. Most studies focused on alcohol and tobacco consumption and neglected the impact of cash transfers on the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). Thus, this paper used propensity score matching and average treatment effects on the treated (ATET) evaluation method to compare the consumption of poor households with transfers to their consumption if they had not received cash transfers and determine the characteristics …

“Why Am I The Only One Responsible For The Whole Family?”: Expressions Of Economic Filial Piety And Financial Anxiety Among Female Survivors Of Sex Trafficking In Cambodia, Julia M. Smith-Brake, Lim Vanntheary, Nhanh Channtha
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
Filial piety has evolved and spread in different ways throughout Asia, with the common thread of deep respect and gratitude towards one’s parents remaining a very strong cultural value. In Khmer culture, filial piety includes the expectation that daughters and daughters-in-law provide daily assistance to parents and parents-in-law. Financial anxiety includes the worry and negative mental health outcomes associated with financial stressors. This article presents findings from the Butterfly Longitudinal Research Study on themes on filial piety and financial anxiety, combining survey results from across multiple years as well as a thematic analysis of themes from focus group discussions and …

The Local Labor Market Impacts Of Us Megafires, Benjamin A. Jones, Shana M. Mcdermott
The Local Labor Market Impacts Of Us Megafires, Benjamin A. Jones, Shana M. Mcdermott
Economics Faculty Research
As we learn to sustainably coexist with wildfire, there is an urgent need to improve our understanding of its multidimensional impacts on society. To this end, we undertake a nationwide study to estimate how megafires (wildfires > 100,000 acres in size) affect US labor market outcomes in communities located within the flame zone. Both year-of-fire and over-time dynamic impacts are studied between 2010−2017. We find that counties located within a megafire flame zone experience significantly lower per capita wage earnings across multiple sources of earnings data for up to two years after megafire event occurrence. We find preliminary evidence that impacts …
Below-Deck: The Specialist Sailor In World War Ii, Gregory Falcon
Below-Deck: The Specialist Sailor In World War Ii, Gregory Falcon
War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses
U.S. Navy ships were made up of many unexpected jobs during World War II. Traditional war histories say little about sailors who rarely saw direct combat below active war decks but instead worked skilled jobs. Specialized sailors were often unseen as they worked below the waterline as, for example, electrician’s mates and boiler room firemen. These jobs were pivotal to keeping the ship running and allowed men to make use of their valuable time in the navy. This thesis argues that, although evolving naval culture led men to enter for various reasons, many entered to enhance their future career during …
Heterogeneity In Individual Expectations, Sentiment, And Constant-Gain Learning, Stephen J. Cole, Fabio Milani
Heterogeneity In Individual Expectations, Sentiment, And Constant-Gain Learning, Stephen J. Cole, Fabio Milani
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
This paper uses adaptive learning to understand the heterogeneity of individual-level expectations. We exploit individual Survey of Professional Forecasters data on output and inflation forecasts. We endow all forecasters with the same information set that they would have as economic agents in a benchmark New Keynesian model. Forecasters are, however, allowed to differ in the constant gain values that they use to update their beliefs and in their sentiments. The latter are defined as the degrees of excess optimism or pessimism about the economy that cannot be justified by the learning model. Our results highlight the heterogeneity in the gain …
Gender Differences In The Returns To Education Over Time For Married Couples, Nikki Brendemuehl, Nicholas A. Jolly
Gender Differences In The Returns To Education Over Time For Married Couples, Nikki Brendemuehl, Nicholas A. Jolly
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
Using US Census data from 1960 to 2000 and American Community Survey data from 2010, this paper analyzes gender differences in the return to education for married couples. Results from this analysis show that the return to schooling has increased over time for both genders; however, the relative return to schooling for females has fallen since the 1990s. In 2010, married women who are under age 35 and are in the top 20 percent of the income distribution had lower returns to schooling compared to men. These results are consistent with several demographic shifts that occurred during the last half …
The Baran Ratio, Investment, And British Economic Growth And Development, Thomas E. Lambert
The Baran Ratio, Investment, And British Economic Growth And Development, Thomas E. Lambert
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Investment in capital, new technology, and agricultural techniques has not been considered an endeavor worthwhile in a medieval economy because of a lack of strong property rights and no incentive on the part of lords and barons to lend money to or grant rights to peasant farmers. Therefore, the medieval economy and standards of living at that time often have been characterized as non-dynamic and static due to insufficient investment in innovative techniques and technology. Paul Baran’s concept of the economic surplus is applied to investment patterns during the late medieval, mercantile, and early capitalist stages of economic growth in …
Which Financial Measures Can Be Leveraged To Help Close The Unfunded Liability Gap For State Pension Plans?, Selette M. Jemison
Which Financial Measures Can Be Leveraged To Help Close The Unfunded Liability Gap For State Pension Plans?, Selette M. Jemison
Doctoral Dissertations (DBA)
The main purpose of this study is to identify the key determinants of the unfunded liability (UL) for state and local public Defined Benefit (DB) pension plans. The UL is a measure of pension debt in plans across the U.S. This debt continues to rise while pension obligations to current and future retirees must also be satisfied. The UL is derived by subtracting the market value of plan assets from its accrued liabilities. If assets are less than liabilities, it signals a lack of funds set aside to cover all pension benefits and generates what is known as an unfunded …

Monetary Policy Surprises, Stock Returns, And Financial And Liquidity Constraints, In An Exchange Rate Monetary Policy System, John M. Sequeira
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study examines the impact of monetary policy surprises on the stock price behaviour of a small developed economy, whose monetary policy is based on the exchange rate. We find that monetary policy surprises associated with all contractionary policy levers and a neutral policy lever, have a consistently significant and negative impact on stock returns. In comparison, only monetary policy surprises associated with a downward re-centering policy lever, has a significantly positive effect on stock returns. Using a recalibrated classification system, we also find that monetary policy surprises differ across sectors of the economy. Our results show how monetary policy …
The Asymmetric Effect Of Sentiment On Equity Returns, Mishal Ahmed
The Asymmetric Effect Of Sentiment On Equity Returns, Mishal Ahmed
Dissertations
In the first chapter titled “The Asymmetric Effect of Sentiment on U.S. Equity Returns”, we test the asymmetric impact of investor sentiment, proxied by the Baker-Wurgler (2007) investor sentiment index, on expected stock returns in the U.S. We regress sentiment on market and economy-wide fundamentals, use the residuals as a measure of excess sentiment and estimate long-horizon return regressions using positive and negative components of excess sentiment as predictors. We hypothesize that excessive optimism leads investors to make significant portfolio changes whereas excessive pessimism makes investors more cautious about investing, due to loss aversion. Primary results confirm our hypothesis with …
An Examination Of Types Of Health Insurance And The Reported Prevalence Of Autism In The United States, Jennifer L. Thompson
An Examination Of Types Of Health Insurance And The Reported Prevalence Of Autism In The United States, Jennifer L. Thompson
Dissertations
The prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders continues to rise despite barriers of changes to diagnostic criteria and lack of insurance coverage. Increases in prevalence affect costs associated with a disorder since cost of health care services are often estimated based on utilization of services. This can also affect an individual’s ability to access to health care services. To equitably distribute autism services to individuals an accurate estimation of the true prevalence of autism is needed.
Access to health care can be influenced by the type of insurance coverage a person holds. Other factors, such as socio-economic status, ethnicity, location of …

Three Essays On The Relationship Between Policy Uncertainty And Foreign Direct Investment, Chikezie Kenneth Okoli
Dissertations
Foreign direct investment (FDI) occurs when an entity in one country establishes a significant degree of ownership in an enterprise in another country. FDI is a critical component in ensuring the development of any economy. It often aids with the development of an industry or sector within an economy by bringing in capital, new technologies, manufacturing methodologies, and managing expertise to the receiving country. This dissertation examines the relationship between policy uncertainty and foreign direct investment (FDI) in developed economies.
The first essay focuses on U.S. policy uncertainty and its effects on U.S. FDI inflows, while the second essay focuses …

Financing Singapore’S Smes And The Crowdfunding Industry In Singapore, Swee Liang Tan, Yoke Wang Tok, Chansriniyom Thitipat
Research Collection School Of Economics
As new digital technologies emerge that make the provision of financial services more efficient, they hold the potential to address barriers that SMEs face in accessing credit. This paper finds empirical evidence that crowdfunding for SMEs improved SMEs’ timeliness to pay debt in Singapore. Anecdotal evidence from growing SMEs suggests that getting crowdfunding loans also induced financing from banks, leading to more efficient allocation of credit. In just four years, Singapore’s crowdfunding volume has grown rapidly making it one of the top crowdfunding hubs in Southeast Asia in 2018. The rapid development of Singapore’s crowdfunding industry can be attributed to …

Volatility Coupling, Jean Jacod, Jia Li, Zhipeng Liao
Research Collection School Of Economics
This paper provides a strong approximation, or coupling, theory for spot volatility estimators formed using high-frequency data. We show that the t-statistic process associated with the nonparametric spot volatility estimator can be strongly approximated by a growing-dimensional vector of independent variables defined as functions of Brownian increments. We use this coupling theory to study the uniform inference for the volatility process in an infill asymptotic setting. Specifically, we propose uniform confidence bands for spot volatility, beta, idiosyncratic variance processes, and their nonlinear transforms. The theory is also applied to address an open question concerning the inference of monotone nonsmooth integrated …

Socioecological Factors And Farmer Perceptions Impacting Pesticide Use And Pollinator Conservation On Cucurbit Farms, Elias H. Bloom, Dana Marie Bauer, Abigail Kaminski, Ian Kaplan, Zsofia Szendrei
Economics
While research suggests that pollinator decline is linked with agricultural practices, it is unclear whether farmers share this view and adapt management to promote pollinators based on their understanding of these threats. To address these issues, we surveyed farmers of pollinator-dependent cucurbit crops across four states in the Midwest, USA. We grouped farmers by their perceptions of pollinator declines and routes of pesticide exposure and used statistical models to evaluate if farmers manage pests and pollinators based on these perceptions. Out of 93 completed surveys, 39% of farmers believed pollinators were in decline. When grouped, 17% of farmers were classified …

Wild Bootstrap For Instrumental Variable Regressions With Weak And Few Clusters, Wenjie Wang, Yichong Zhang
Research Collection School Of Economics
We study the wild bootstrap inference for instrumental variable (quantile) regressions in the framework of a small number of large clusters, in which the number of clusters is viewed as fixed and the number of observations for each cluster diverges to infinity. For subvector inference, we show that the wild bootstrap Wald test with or without using the cluster-robust covariance matrix controls size asymptotically up to a small error as long as the parameters of endogenous variables are strongly identified in at least one of the clusters. We further develop a wild bootstrap Anderson-Rubin (AR) test for full-vector inference and …

Jobs For Justice(S): Corruption In The Supreme Court Of India, Madhav S. Aney, Shubhankar Dam, Giovanni Ko
Research Collection School Of Economics
We investigate whether judicial decisions are affected by career concerns of judges by analyzing two questions: Do judges respond to incentives to pander by ruling in favor of the government in the hope of receiving jobs after retiring from the Supreme Court? Does the government reward judges who rule in its favor with prestigious jobs? We construct a data set of Supreme Court of India cases involving the government for 1999–2014. We find that incentives to pander have a causal effect on judicial decision-making, and they are jointly determined by the importance of the case and whether the judge retires …
Glivenko-Cantelli Theorems For Integrated Functionals Of Stochastic Processes, Jia Li, Congshan Zhang, Yunxiao Liu
Glivenko-Cantelli Theorems For Integrated Functionals Of Stochastic Processes, Jia Li, Congshan Zhang, Yunxiao Liu
Research Collection School Of Economics
We prove a Glivenko-Cantelli theorem for integrated functionals of latent continuous-time stochastic processes. Based on a bracketing condition via random brackets, the theorem establishes the uniform convergence of a sequence of empirical occupation measures towards the occupation measure induced by underlying processes over large classes of test functions, including indicator functions, bounded monotone functions, Lipschitz-in-parameter functions, and Hölder classes as special cases. The general Glivenko-Cantelli theorem is then applied in more concrete high-frequency statistical settings to establish uniform convergence results for general integrated functionals of the volatility of efficient price and local moments of microstructure noise.
Efficient Estimation Of Integrated Volatility Functionals Under General Volatility Dynamics, Jia Li, Yunxiao Liu
Efficient Estimation Of Integrated Volatility Functionals Under General Volatility Dynamics, Jia Li, Yunxiao Liu
Research Collection School Of Economics
We provide an asymptotic theory for the estimation of a general class of smooth nonlinear integrated volatility functionals. Such functionals are broadly useful for measuring financial risk and estimating economic models using high-frequency transaction data. The theory is valid under general volatility dynamics, which accommodates both Itô semimartingales (e.g., jump-diffusions) and long-memory processes (e.g., fractional Brownian motions). We establish the semiparametric efficiency bound under a nonstandard nonergodic setting with infill asymptotics, and show that the proposed estimator attains this efficiency bound. These results on efficient estimation are further extended to a setting with irregularly sampled data.

The importance of records cannot be overstated for a company or government body,as they can be compared to a critical organ or as the "heart" of the organization or institution, making decisions and as proof that perhaps a rules and regulation or program has been executed. Each agency's active records are, of course, created on a daily basis, when there's no records management, the amount of records will increase and turn into a jumble of paper. The National Archives of Indonesia or ANRI places a high value on record management. In order to establish wellmanaged and ordered documents that make …

Social security is a form of social protection to ensure that all people can meet their basic needs for a decent life. One type of social security program is the Work Accident Insurance (Jaminan Kecelakaan Kerja, JKK). The JKK is held with the aim of ensuring that participants receive health care benefits and cash compensation if a worker has a work accident or suffers from an occupational disease. The amount of the JKK premium contribution is a certain percentage of wages or income which is then deposited by the employer to the social security administering agency. Because the organizing body …
