Airline Ticket Anaysis, Emerson Kohl, Ivan O'Neil Aug 2026

Airline Ticket Anaysis, Emerson Kohl, Ivan O'Neil

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

While the U.S. domestic airline industry generates hundreds of billions in annual revenue, the mechanics of airfare pricing remain remarkably opaque to travelers and analysts alike. Prices for geographically similar routes often diverge sharply, driven by a complex interplay of structural constraints and market pressures. This study elucidates the primary drivers of ticket pricing by analyzing high-frequency data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics DB1B database.   Utilizing an Ordinary Least Squares framework, the research evaluates how route distance, carrier concentration, passenger throughput, and seasonal fluctuations collectively dictate average fares. By quantifying these relationships in Python, the analysis seeks to isolate …

Money And Power: How Big Money Shapes Democracy In The United States, Paige Long May 2026

Money And Power: How Big Money Shapes Democracy In The United States, Paige Long

Thinking Matters Symposium

This project explores the question: what could and should be done to strengthen democracy in the United States? More specifically, it examines the role that large amounts of money in politics play in shaping political power and representation. The central argument of this project is that reducing the influence of big money in political campaigns and policymaking is necessary for creating a more fair and representative democratic system. When wealthy donors, corporations, and special interest groups are able to spend large amounts of money to influence elections and policy decisions, it can limit the political voice of ordinary citizens.

Exploring Self-Sufficiency And Economic Behavior In Economic Education Students, Rizza Megasari, Sheerad Sahid

International Conference on Business and Management Research (ICBMR)

This study investigates the self-sufficiency and economic behaviors of economics education students, focusing on how independent living shapes their financial management, consumption habits, and overall approach to life. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, using a question list informed by literature on 21st-century skills, sustainable development, and self-sufficiency. The interview explored the student's understanding and practice of self-sufficiency, examining their experiences with financial management (budgeting, saving, spending), living arrangements (boarding house choices, facilities, and habits), consumption patterns (food, clothing, transportation), and engagement in self-reliant activities (cooking, minor repairs). The study highlights the interplay between economic knowledge, personal values, and practical …

Hospital Concentration And Aca Premiums, Lucas Piselli Apr 2026

Hospital Concentration And Aca Premiums, Lucas Piselli

Bryant REDay (Research and Engagement Day)

This research examines the relationship between hospital market concentration and health insurance premiums in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplaces. As hospitals across the United States have increasingly merged or closed, provider markets have become more concentrated, raising questions about whether consolidation improves efficiency or instead increases healthcare costs through greater market power. Using Marketplace premium data, hospital discharge information, and demographic controls from 2014–2017, the study analyzes how hospital concentration, measured by the Herfindahl–Hirschman Index (HHI), affects insurance pricing. The findings show that highly concentrated hospital markets are associated with significantly higher Marketplace premiums, even after controlling for insurer …

Asteroid Mining: The Next Big Thing Or A Gimmick?, Aashman Gupta

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

Asteroid mining, a sci-fi concept that is rapidly emerging as a potential cornerstone for humanity's expansion into space. This paper explores the economic, technological, and legal challenges of asteroid mining, by examining its feasibility, potential benefits, and other challenges that could hinder its development. Some argue that mining asteroids could provide essential resources and reduce dependency on Earth leading to sustainable space colonization, but critical challenges still remain. Through a review and rational comparison of recent advancements and setbacks, this paper presents an analysis of the potential of asteroid mining; findings suggest that while asteroid mining holds significant potential for …

Sustainable Consumption Under Structural Constraint: Insights From Indigenous Communities On The Great Plains, Glen Marshall, Rand Wergin

Mountain Plains Business Conference

Resource-constrained communities, particularly Indigenous and remote communities, remain critically understudied in the business literature despite persistent socioeconomic challenges. This study employs a mixed-methods approach to explore barriers to sustainable consumption in these resource-limited contexts. It examines consumer attitudes toward sustainability and identifies key barriers to sustainable consumption. Understanding these barriers is crucial for entrepreneurs seeking profitable and socially beneficial ventures, as well as for policymakers designing social or economic initiatives. This research provides actionable insights for tribal governments, business professionals, policymakers, and others seeking to promote sustainable economic growth, community health, and positive externalities in underserved communities.

Improving The Circulation Of Federal Reserve Banks Research With A Working Paper Digest, Scott St. Louis

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

Across the 12 regional Federal Reserve banks, more than 400 economists produce hundreds of freely accessible working papers each year. Until recently, there was not a single resource with which to stay current on their release. In response, librarians across the Fed spearheaded a new initiative: A monthly email digest, Latest Working Papers from the Federal Reserve Banks, now delivers new economic research directly to subscribers. In fewer than 30 days following its initial issue in July 2024, Latest Working Papers from the Federal Reserve Banks gained more than 1,300 subscribers in more than 30 countries on six continents. This …

Exploring Anticoagulant Prescription Disparities: A Focus On Hispanic Patient Care, Michael Acevedo, Vanessa Veltre

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Anticoagulants play a critical role in preventing thromboembolic events, yet disparities persist in their prescription among minority populations. This presentation explores inequities in anticoagulant prescribing patterns, with a specific focus on Hispanic patient care. Using retrospective electronic health record data, we analyzed the prescription rates of warfarin versus direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) among adults with clinical indications for anticoagulation. Our findings reveal that Hispanic patients are significantly less likely to receive DOACs compared to non-Hispanic White patients, even after adjusting for demographics, comorbidities, and insurance status. Contributing factors include language barriers, lack of insurance, and potential implicit bias in provider …

Indirect Cost Cap: Perspectives On Efficiency, Waste, And Equity, Neel B. Patel, Lakshman Segar May 2025

Indirect Cost Cap: Perspectives On Efficiency, Waste, And Equity, Neel B. Patel, Lakshman Segar

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Background: On February 10, 2025, the NIH enacted a 15% cap on indirect costs, reallocating $4 billion from institutional overhead to direct research within a $35 billion funding framework. The policy follows longstanding concerns about unchecked growth and inefficiencies in indirect cost reimbursements, which rose from 15% in the 1950s to over 70% at some institutions by the 1990s. Notable examples include a $200 million overcharge at Stanford and millions in questionable expenditures identified in federal audits.

Objective: To evaluate the financial, operational, and equity-related impacts of the NIH’s indirect cost cap on U.S. research institutions.

Methods: …

Gardens Through The Ages: How Public Gardens Impact The Growth Of Society, Abby J. Cutsinger Apr 2025

Gardens Through The Ages: How Public Gardens Impact The Growth Of Society, Abby J. Cutsinger

ATU Scholars Symposium

Throughout history, gardens held a vital role in the development of civilizations, often serving as spaces for food, reflection, and community. The aim of this study was to explore the progression of gardens parallel to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Additionally, the study aimed to determine whether gardens help fulfill those needs and, in doing so, influence human morality. To examine these possibilities, the researcher conducted a literature review of historical and contemporary accounts of gardening and its effects on physical and psychological well-being, analyzing these findings through the lens of Maslow’s framework. Additionally, crime rate data were compared across several …

Impact Of Community Gardening On Neighborhood Crime Rates: Research Proposal, Abby J. Cutsinger Apr 2025

Impact Of Community Gardening On Neighborhood Crime Rates: Research Proposal, Abby J. Cutsinger

ATU Scholars Symposium

Gardening has been a part of human existence from the beginning of time, but people have become distanced from gardening as civilization has grown and urbanized. As this distance has grown, so has the disconnect between people and the basic needs which shape their views of themselves and of society. It is possible that, in the drift away from gardening as communities, humans have become less moral.

The purpose of this study is to determine if community gardening lowers violent crime rates.

This relationship will be gauged by answering the following questions:

  • Which type of community gardening benefits community relationships …

Democracy And Foreign Aid: How Democratic Institutions Affect Aid Effectiveness, Jonas Bensah Mar 2025

Democracy And Foreign Aid: How Democratic Institutions Affect Aid Effectiveness, Jonas Bensah

Graduate Research Conference (GSIS)

This research paper examines the comparative effectiveness of foreign aid in Ghana and Zimbabwe, highlighting the critical role of political regimes and democratic institutions. The study underscores that while democratic governance, characterized by transparency, accountability, and citizen participation, significantly enhances aid effectiveness. Ghana’s stable democracy and robust institutions have facilitated the effective use of aid, leading to significant improvements in economic growth, education, healthcare, and infrastructure. In contrast, Zimbabwe’s authoritarian regime, marked by corruption and political repression, has hindered the efficient utilization of aid, exacerbating the country's socio-economic challenges. Policy recommendations for donors emphasize the need for promoting democratic governance, …

From Shatter Zone To Shatterbelt: The Role Of The Three Seas Initiative In Shaping Central And Eastern Europe, Ian Murphy Mar 2025

From Shatter Zone To Shatterbelt: The Role Of The Three Seas Initiative In Shaping Central And Eastern Europe, Ian Murphy

Graduate Research Conference (GSIS)

The Three Seas Initiative (TSI) is a relatively new political and economic platform aimed at enhancing connectivity and infrastructure development in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). This initiative seeks to address the region’s historical underdevelopment and lack of north-south connectivity. This paper examines the role of the TSI in the context of a changing geopolitical landscape, where Russia and China are increasingly seeking to exert influence. The central research question is: Does the TSI represent a fundamental shift in the CEE region, and how can it foster interdependence while mitigating the risk of conflict? I argue that the TSI signifies …

Does Central Bank Transparency Curb Foreign Exchange Vulnerability?, Muhammad Aftab, Kate Phylaktis Dec 2024

Does Central Bank Transparency Curb Foreign Exchange Vulnerability?, Muhammad Aftab, Kate Phylaktis

CBER Conference

This study examines the relationship between central bank transparency (CBT) and foreign exchange market vulnerability, focusing on exchange market pressure (EMP) to provide a comprehensive understanding. Using panel bounds testing approach to cointegration based analysis, the study covers both developed and emerging markets, incorporating the global financial crisis (GFC) and various control variables. External policy uncertainty and FX regimes are also considered to elucidate the nuanced relationship between CBT and EMP. Findings reveal that improved CBT reduces EMP, with financial development moderating this effect, suggesting well-developed financial systems lead to more stable exchange markets. CBT consistently relieves EMP during both …

Bayesian Estimation Of A Pragmatic Model For Monetary Policy Analysis: The Case Of Pakistan, Shahzad Ahmad, Waliullah .

CBER Conference

In this study, Bayesian maximum likelihood estimation of quarterly projections model for Pakistan as presented, as documented in Ahmad & Pasha (2015). Estimation results based on quarterly data from 2001 to 2023 show substantial differences in values of estimated versus calibrated parameters related to aggregate demand, aggregate supply, monetary policy rule and exogenous shock processes. The aim of this study is to compare forecasting performance for key macro variables. It shows that the estimated model provides more precise forecasts in case of headline inflation, real GDP growth, interest rate and exchange rate over 8-quarters forecast horizon. An estimated model for …

Monetary Policy In Good Times And In Bad: Empirical Evidence From Pakistan, Haider Ali Dec 2024

Monetary Policy In Good Times And In Bad: Empirical Evidence From Pakistan, Haider Ali

CBER Conference

A significant body of literature explores and establishes the impact of monetary policy on output and prices, at least in the short run. However, the subsequent question is whether this effect is symmetric concerning the various states of the economy (see, Tenreyro and Thwaites, 2016; Bernstein, 2021; Eichenbaum et al., 2022; among others). This study contributes to the literature on state-dependent (non-linear) effects of unanticipated monetary policy shocks according to two important features of the economy. The amount of slack in the economy and the amount of the public-sector footprint in the market. Evaluating state-dependent effects is crucial because assuming …

A Review On Fiscal And Debt Policies In Pakistan, Karim Khan Dec 2024

A Review On Fiscal And Debt Policies In Pakistan, Karim Khan

CBER Conference

Pakistan has been pursuing an active albeit expansionary fiscal policy since 1970s. In the mid1970s to early-1980s, such policy choice was manifested in externally financed development spending, primarily in the form of investment in public enterprises. Despite excessive deficit financing, Pakistan’s economic performance never took off; rather, it remained on a path of truncated growth which, in turn, created structural hurdles like low productivity, poor investment climate, and higher unemployment. Likewise, deficit financing has been threatening the sustainability of fiscal framework as excessive public spending is not accompanied by corresponding enhances in domestic revenues. Consequently, these policies have caused persistence …

Authoritarian Legality Of Sifc: An Inquiry Into The Dual State And Economic Decision Making In Pakistan, Hassan Zaheer Dec 2024

Authoritarian Legality Of Sifc: An Inquiry Into The Dual State And Economic Decision Making In Pakistan, Hassan Zaheer

CBER Conference

Pakistan is no stranger to the union of authoritarianism with its economic decision-making. From the grand designs of Ayub Khan’s industrialization to Bhutto’s nationalization to Zia’s privatization, the country has been practically a laboratory of authoritarian experimentation over nature and the processes of the national economy. However, certain ideas have been coherent throughout time and space when it comes to the fusion of authoritarian law, arbitrary power, and economic decisions. These ideas have historically shaped the fusion of authoritarian power with economic decisions in the country. Resultantly, the authoritarian legality approach establishes a Dual-State in Pakistan by undermining normative processes …

Pros And Cons Of Debt Financing: An Objective Analysis, Anwar Shah Dec 2024

Pros And Cons Of Debt Financing: An Objective Analysis, Anwar Shah

CBER Conference

Debt financing plays an important role in the modern financial system. It is claimed that the interest rate equilibrates demand and supply in the loanable funds markets and helps in the efficient allocation of financial capital. It is also claimed that interest rates simply break up investment risk to suit the requirements of lenders and users of funds. However, the occurrence of the Global Recession in 2008 due to excessive debt financing in real estate (mortgage loans) and the resemblance of interest rate with usury requires investigation of the other side of debt financing. This paper aims to fill this …

The Economic Contribution Of Cherry To The Household Economy In Pakistan. A Case Study From Lower-Hunza, Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan, Rizwan Akhtar Dec 2024

The Economic Contribution Of Cherry To The Household Economy In Pakistan. A Case Study From Lower-Hunza, Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan, Rizwan Akhtar

CBER Conference

The cherry, one of the most recognized fruit crops, has become a significant source of income for rural farmers in Pakistan. However, limited research has been conducted on the economic impact of cherry farming. Consequently, there is a growing demand for a deeper understanding of cherries' economic contribution to the domestic economy. This study used socio-economic data from 315 cherry-producing households in Lower Hunza, GilgitBaltistan, to examine the role of cherries in community income. Data was collected through direct face-to-face interviews and semi-structured questionnaires with cherry producers, emphasizing group family discussions and interactions with local cherry traders. The findings indicate …
