Local Negotiation With Heterogeneous Groundwater Users, Gordon C. Rausser, Susan Stratton Sayre, Leo K. Simon

This paper assesses the political implications of intra-aquifer heterogeneity in the benefits and costs of optimal groundwater management. We use simulation modeling to predict groundwater extraction regimes under two alternative local decision-making structures and compare these structures to optimal management. Local collective action performs poorly when the intra-aquifer disparity in the potential gains is large. Moreover, large intra-aquifer disparity is generally associated with large potential gains. As a result, local collective action is unlikely to be successful in capturing the largest welfare gains. Influences of government on the shipbuilding industry have dimmed and every stakeholder manages their own way without direction from the perspective of national interest. On the other hand, the mandatory reduction of CO2 emissions from ships was adopted by IMO in 2011. Interest Rate Policy In China: The Impact Of Suppressed Deposit Rates On Household Income From 2000-2007, Zhuliang James Zhang

An often-overlooked impact of China’s policy of maintaining low interest has been the suppression of household interest income, which has increased the propensity of households to save while decreasing their consumption rates. This paper posits that from 2000 to 2007, deposit rates in China were suppressed annually by around 720 basis points, imposing an implicit tax on annual per-capita income of 12.8% on average. Raising deposit rates will increase household income and boost consumption in the medium-term if the Chinese government is able to initiate policy shifts that distribute the gains of economic growth more equitably to households. Previous literature relative to income inequality has made available a number of demographic, economic, and policy determinants. This paper, using growth transmission literature as a basis for analysis, develops an argument showing that these results are biased and unreliable due to an omitted variable bias and a model misspecification. The model developed in this paper corrects for the bias by including a missing spatial factor that accounts for a contagion effect experienced by neighboring states. Income inequality is shown to be transmissible through multiple channels and may therefore be combatted only through a concerted group effort, rather than through individual …

The resource curse theory has helped economists explain this observation. My thesis examines the extension of microfinance to a refugee community; the objective focuses on economic assistance and a bridge to provide the required basic needs, as reported by the refugee population. With the global growth of refugees, the repositioning of refugees from either being cast aside as a potentially productive society or completely overlooked, is critical. Through my research in Ecuador, my thesis takes the viewpoint that refugees do, in fact, matter, and can become productive contributors to a society. The challenge that is presented in that viewpoint is: how do they become a part of a society?

Research shows local economic growth has been generated from the presence of a professional sports team in multiple ways: the creation of new jobs, increased consumer spending, increased sales in certain market segments, and increased tax revenue.
