Different Strokes For Different Folks: Long Memory And Roughness, Shuping Shi, Jun Yu Aug 2021

Different Strokes For Different Folks: Long Memory And Roughness, Shuping Shi, Jun Yu

SMU Economics and Statistics Working Paper Series

The log realized volatility of financial assets is often modeled as an autoregressive fractionally integrated moving average model (ARFIMA) process, denoted by ARFIMA(p, d, q), with p = 1 and q = 0. Two conflicting results have been found in the literature regarding the dynamics. One stream shows that the data series has a long memory (i.e., the fractional parameter d > 0) with strong mean reversion (i.e., the autoregressive coefficient |α1| ≈ 0). The other stream suggests that the volatil-ity is rough (i.e., d < 0) with highly persistent dynamic (i.e., α1 → 1). To consolidate the findings, this paper first examines the finite sample properties of alternative estimation methods employed in the literature for the ARFIMA(1, d, 0) model and then applies the outperforming techniques to a wide range of financial assets. The candidate methods include two parametric maximum likeli-hood (ML) methods (the maximum time-domain modified profile likelihood (MPL) and maximum frequency-domain likelihood) and two semiparametric methods (the local Whittle method and log periodogram estimation method). The two parametric methods work well across all parameter set-tings, with the MPL method outperforming. In contrast, the two semiparametric methods have a very large upward bias for d and an equally large downward bias for α1 when α1 is close to unity. The poor performance of the semiparametric methods in the presence of a highly persistent dynamic might lead to a false conclusion of long memory. In the empirical applications, we find that the log realized volatilities of exchange rate futures over the past decade have a long memory, where the point estimate of d is between 0.4 and 0.5 and the estimate of α1 is near zero. For other finan-cial assets considered (including stock indices and industry indices), we find that they have rough volatility, with the point estimate of d being negative and the point estimates of α1 close to unity.

Efficient Bilateral Trade Via Two-Stage Mechanisms Under One-Sided Asymmetric Information, Takashi Kunimoto, Cuiling Zhang Aug 2021

Efficient Bilateral Trade Via Two-Stage Mechanisms Under One-Sided Asymmetric Information, Takashi Kunimoto, Cuiling Zhang

SMU Economics and Statistics Working Paper Series

This paper considers a bilateral-trade model with one-sided asymmetric information in which one agent (seller) initially owns an indivisible object and is fully informed of its value, while the other agent (buyer) intends to obtain the object whose value is unknown to himself. As Jehiel and Pauzner (2006) show that no mechanisms can generally result in efficient, voluntary bilateral trades, we aim to overturn this impossibility result by employing two-stage mechanisms (Mezzetti (2004)) in which first, the outcome (e.g., allocation of the goods) is determined, then the agents observe their own outcome-decision payoffs, and finally, transfers are made. We show …

Greek Myth Or Fact? The Role Of Greek Houses In Alcohol And Drug Violations On American Campuses, Manu Raghav, Timothy Diette

Economics and Management Faculty publications

Greek-letter student social groups, better known as fraternities and sororities, are a ubiquitous feature on many American higher education campuses. These organizations, especially fraternities, have a reputation for encouraging unruly and improper behavior among both members and non-members. This paper investigates the effect of the degree of prevalence of these Greek organizations at a campus, as measured by the percentage of students who are members of fraternities and sororities, on the instances of liquor and drug law violations on campuses, as measured by the number of arrests for liquor and drug laws violations. Using a unique dataset, which combines data …

Nigeria’S Economic Management: Reflections Through Monthly Interest Rate Movement From 1996 To 2020 And Beyond, Job Nmadu, Halima Sallawu, Yebosoko Nmadu

University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing

Economic management is the rules, policies, procedures and skills deployed to manage the resources, finances, income, and expenditure of a community, business enterprise or a whole country. The major instruments of economic management are the fiscal and economic development policies normally outlined in the countries budget by the President. The failure to achieve the stated objectives in the fiscal and monetary policies are the major challenges faced by less developed and developing countries of the world. This is because of frequent fluctuations in macro-prices particularly interest, wage and exchange rates. The resultant effects of the movement of these prices are …

Conjectures Of English And Uk Economic Surplus, Investment, Tax Revenues And Deficit Amounts From The 13th To The 19th Century, Thomas E. Lambert Aug 2021

Conjectures Of English And Uk Economic Surplus, Investment, Tax Revenues And Deficit Amounts From The 13th To The 19th Century, Thomas E. Lambert

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This paper attempts to estimate trends in the levels of economic surplus, public and private investment, and national government surpluses and deficits from accumulated capital income, taxation, and rents estimated by different economic historians for England and the UK. The data support historical accounts that income per capita growth begins to increase around the 1600s in Britain perhaps due to the level of capital, tax, and land income achieving an adequate threshold amount. According to some historians, this would also be about the time of capitalism’s ascent as the dominant economic system in England. Even then, dramatic increases in investment …

Measuring Fiscal Interactions In Local Federalism: Evidence From Florida, Kevin Willardsen Aug 2021

Measuring Fiscal Interactions In Local Federalism: Evidence From Florida, Kevin Willardsen

Economics Faculty Publications

Local governments react to one another in expenditure. However, the existing literature concerning these reactions suffer from one of three problems: timing dynamics, county behaviour, or over aggregation. City‐to‐city interaction estimates are shown to shrink up to 50% when appropriately dealing with dynamics and county behaviour using a dynamic spatial Durbin model with a maximum likelihood estimator. Expenditure disaggregation shows that the majority of categories have no spillover. One category, general government expenditure, is responsible for nearly all of the variation. This finding does not fit well with the existing theories for spatial interaction.

Data For "Uncertainty And Reputation Effects In Credence Goods Markets", Eric Schniter, J. Dustin Tracy, Vojtěch Zíka Aug 2021

Data For "Uncertainty And Reputation Effects In Credence Goods Markets", Eric Schniter, J. Dustin Tracy, Vojtěch Zíka

ESI Data Sets

Credence-goods experiments have focused on stylized settings in which experts can perfectly identify the buyer’s best option and that option works without fail. However, in nature credence goods involve uncertainties that complicate assessing the quality of service and advice. We introduce two sources of uncertainty into a credence goods experiment. The first is diagnostic uncertainty; experts receive a noisy signal of buyer type so might make an ‘honest’ mistake when advising what is in buyers’ best interests. The second is service uncertainty; the services available to the buyer do not always work. Both sources of uncertainty make detection of expert …

Three Keys Of Development: Knowledge, Efficiency And Innovative Entrepreneurship, Irfan Kalayci, Ali Soylu, Baris Aytekin

University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing

The change in the structure and composition of production factors have always been occurred in the world production history. The competition between sectors and also within each sub-sector that comprise them continues. In this sense, competition has always fed change, transformation and progress. The process phenomenon is the change and transformation movements that occur in the production processes that economies focus on. In this respect, the classification steps emphasize this development. In this study, we discuss economic groups (resource-oriented, productivity-oriented, and innovation-oriented) in terms of drivers of economic development (knowledge, efficiency, innovative entrepreneurship, and productivity). The 3rd Industrial Revolution starting …

Innovative Entrepreneurship In Turkey: Micro And Macro Perspectives, Irfan Kalayci, Baris Aytekin, Ali Soylu

University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing

Entrepreneurship is a scarce factor of production in the economy like labor and capital; it is a business area which is culture and finance related. Turkey is an average country in the entrepreneurship world league. This negative situation in terms of entrepreneurship also continues in terms of innovation and innovative entrepreneurship. Although Turkey is counted among the world's GDP in the rich, in terms of the capacity to innovate is among the poorest. This paper discusses how Turkey can change this "reverse fortune" through developing an internal innovation culture and opening this culture to the outside world. Naturally, the ongoing …

Sales Capture Patterns Among Nebraska Counties, Eric Thompson, Spencer Cook Aug 2021

Sales Capture Patterns Among Nebraska Counties, Eric Thompson, Spencer Cook

Business in Nebraska

Sales capture, the share of local spending power that is captured by area businesses, is an important measure of economic activity. Greater sales capture, which is typically measured using data on local taxable sales, creates multiple benefits for the economy. 1. EMPLOYMENT: Greater sales capture means more employment in retailers, wholesalers, restaurants, hotels, and other businesses subject to sales tax. 2. TAX REVENUE: Taxable sales are an important part of the tax base of many city governments. 3. QUALITY OF LIFE: Retail and hospitality (restaurants, lodging, amusement, and recreation) businesses account for a significant share of taxable sales. These industries …

Learning Efficiency Of Multi-Agent Information Structures, Mira Frick, Ryota Iijima, Yuhta Ishii Aug 2021

Learning Efficiency Of Multi-Agent Information Structures, Mira Frick, Ryota Iijima, Yuhta Ishii

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We study which multi-agent information structures are more effective at eliminating both first-order and higher-order uncertainty, and hence at facilitating efficient play in incomplete-information coordination games. We consider a learning setting à la Cripps, Ely, Mailath, and Samuelson (2008) where players have access to many private signal draws from an information structure. First, we characterize the rate at which players achieve approximate common knowledge of the state, based on a simple learning efficiency index. Notably, this coincides with the rate at which players’ first-order uncertainty vanishes, as higher-order uncertainty becomes negligible relative to first-order uncertainty after enough signal draws. Based …

From Tasks To Riches: A Task-Based Approach To The Determinants Of Wages, Samantha Baradas, Aileen Co, Brian Daguman, Martha Delos Santos

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

An empirical investigation of the effects of occupational skills, human capital, and other worker characteristics on labor market outcomes is examined in this study. Using the PSA Labor Force Survey and Philippine Standard Occupational Classification (PSOC), the group offers a task-based measure as a proxy for occupational skills. Such problems in measuring skills arise when skill endowments of workers are underivable in a survey dataset. With this, the analysis includes comparing and contrasting models with task-based measures of occupational skills and Mincerian wage models with occupational dummies. Regression analysis found consistent statistically significant positive returns on a change in computational, …

Government Expenditure And Economic Dimensions: Determinants Of Fiscal Policy, Jay Pee A. Maalihan Aug 2021

Government Expenditure And Economic Dimensions: Determinants Of Fiscal Policy, Jay Pee A. Maalihan

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

Government expenditure is a known tool of fiscal policy. For a fiscal policy to fit the economic needs of a country, nuances regarding government expenditure such as economic dimensions must be considered as determinants of fiscal policy. This study assessed an econometric model of the significance of economic dimensions to government expenditure by utilizing data from 50 countries throughout 1999–2019. Hence, statistical tests and econometric methods such as fixed effects regression are executed to determine objectives of interest. This study contributes to the economic undertakings of various countries to plan and implement their strategic economic directions.

Impact Of Dividend Policy On Share Price Volatility: A Comparative Study Of The Manufacturing Companies Listed In Dhaka Stock Exchange., Jakia Sultana

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between dividend policy and share price volatility of the manufacturing companies listed on the (DSE) Dhaka Stock Exchange. For this purpose, we select a sample of 35 firms listed in DSE among all the manufacturing sectors for sixteen years (2004-2019). We examine the relationship between share price volatility with two direct measurements of dividend policy (dividend yield and dividend payout) by applying multiple regression for a period of sixteen years from 2004 to 2019. We expand the primary regression model by adding the control variables, including the firm's size, earning …

Covid-19 Outcomes And The Incidence Of Slavery, Amanda Ortega

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Environmental factors have been shown to correlate with COVID-19 outcomes. This study advances the literature on health economics by examining the importance of socioeconomic factors. In addition to standard economic factors, I consider the relationship between the past incidence of slavery and COVID-19 outcomes. I analyze county-level U.S. Census data and Georgia Department of Public Health county-level COVID-19 data using regression analysis. I find that the Covid-19 county vaccination rate in Georgia is related to 1860 slave concentration. No statistically significant relationship is found between 1860 slave concentration and COVID-19 death rate, case rate, or vaccination rate when health, socioeconomic, …

The Impact Of Climate Change On The Cost Of Bank Loans, Siamak Javadi, Abdullah Al Masum Aug 2021

The Impact Of Climate Change On The Cost Of Bank Loans, Siamak Javadi, Abdullah Al Masum

School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

We find that firms in location with higher exposure to climate risk pay significantly higher spreads on their bank loans. This result is robust to different measures of climate risk. Exploiting the economic link between a firm and its customers, we find that the exposure of a firm’s customers to climate risk adversely affects that firm’s cost of borrowing. In the cross-section, we find that the effect is mainly driven by long-term loans of poorly rated firms that are highly exposed to climate risk. Overall, our evidence suggests a slow increase in lenders’ attention to climate risk and that lenders …

The Nexus Between Fiscal Freedom And Investment Freedom: The Case Of E7 Countries, Mehmet Bolukbas

University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing

The idea that there are no restrictions in the economic attitude and behaviour of individuals and firms in the economy is expressed as economic freedoms. Today, the term of economic freedom still does not have a universal concept. However, it is known that there are free market conditions in countries that support economic freedom and the role of the state in the economy is kept at a minimum. There are many criteria for measuring the economic freedom of countries, and fiscal freedom and investment freedom are among the economic freedom criteria. The aim of the study is to analyse the …

From 1948 onwards, hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees settled in Lebanon, in both United Nations camps and private accommodation. Until today, various peace initiatives have taken place to solve this humanitarian crisis, to no avail. The Palestinians in Sidon have integrated into Lebanese society, become intertwined into the community, as both entrepreneurs and employees. Considering the "right of return" for Palestinian refugees, the consequences of the repatriation of the refugees needs to be considered. In this context, this research aims to understand the perceptions of the residents of Sidon on what they believe will happen to the economy of …

Based on the Scott-Kennel’s model of local industry upgrade through foreign direct investments, this paper analyses if investments are always positively benefiting the host economy, or if they are not promoting local/host economies at all, or to which exact level. This paper is focused on service sector oriented investments and answers the questions important to analyse for the successful investment policy creation, which could benefit both the local economy and foreign investors. In other words, only aggregated per year foreign investment numbers are not enough for the comprehensive picture creation and in some cases could even suggest incorrect strategic decisions. …
