When this article was written, Tiger Woods had just won his fourth straight major golf championship and golf was experiencing unprecedented levels of interest and participation among African Americans, Asians, women, and young people. At the same time, playing golf was widely perceived as one of the non-performance-related routes to success in many organizations, a route available most readily to white men of some means and less readily to everyone else. This article identifies the illusion of inclusion stimulated by the emergence of Tiger Woods and steps golfers and non-golfers can take to make golf culture less damagingly exclusive.

We end this century at a unique moment for the United States, when our power and prosperity are greater than at any time in our history. However, there is one area where U.S. leadership is blighted: effective racial diversity in the workplace. In other words, the law mandates that organizations have a diverse workforce, but if the racial history is any indication, there will be resistance to this order, especially by the group in power: white males. Many organizations have been engaged in work on diversity, equity and inclusion, but few can honestly report positive results. This article suggests that part of the reason is that few organizations have processes in place to measure success in this area. Deciding on what to measure is a large part of the problem, especially in organizations that have not established a clear connection between DEI factors and their core business processes and outcomes. Typically, managers and work teams focus on achieving measurable goals. When measurement is absent, often so is effort. When DEI objectives are tied to measurable organizational outcomes, …
