A Better Nondimensionalization Scheme For Slender Laminar Flows: The Laplacian Operator Scaling Method, Mark M. Weislogel, Yongkang Chen, D. Bolleddula
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A scaling of the two-dimensional Laplacian operator is demonstrated for certain solutions (at least) to Poisson’s equation. It succeeds by treating the operator as a single geometric scale entity. The belated and rather subtle method provides an efficient assessment of the geometrical dependence of the problem and is preferred when practicable to the hydraulic diameter or term-by-term scaling for slender fully developed laminar flows. The improved accuracy further reduces the reliance of problems on widely varying numerical data or cumbersome theoretical forms and improves the prospects of exact or approximate theoretical analysis. Simple example problems are briefly described that demonstrate …
Peristaltic Pumping Of A Non-Newtonian Fluid, Amit Medhavi
Peristaltic Pumping Of A Non-Newtonian Fluid, Amit Medhavi
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The flow induced by sinusoidal peristaltic motion of the tube wall of a non-Newtonian fluid obeying Herschel-Bulkley equation (a general rheological equation that represents a powerlaw, Bingham and Newtonian fluid for particular choice of parameters) under long wavelength and low Reynolds number approximation is investigated. The results obtained for flow rate, pressure drop and friction force are discussed both qualitatively and quantitatively and compared with other related studies. It is found that the pressure drop increases with the flow rate and yield stress but decreases with the increasing amplitude ratio. The flow behaviour index shows significant impact on the magnitude …

Morphologies And Kinetics Of A Dewetting Ultrathin Solid Film, Mikhail Khenner
Mathematics Faculty Publications
The surface evolution model based on geometric partial differential equation is used to numerically study the kinetics of dewetting and dynamic morphologies for the localized pinhole defect in the surface of the ultrathin solid film with the strongly anisotropic surface energy. Depending on parameters such as the initial depth and width of the pinole, the strength of the attractive substrate potential and the strength of the surface energy anisotropy, the pinhole may either extend to the substrate and thus rupture the film, or evolve to the quasiequilibrium shape while the rest of the film surface undergoes phase separation into a …

Enhanced Stability Of A Dewetting Thin Liquid Film In A Single-Frequency Vibration Field, Mikhail Khenner
Mathematics Faculty Publications
Dynamics of a thin dewetting liquid film on a vertically oscillating substrate is considered. We assume moderate vibration frequency and large (compared to the mean film thickness) vibration amplitude. Using the lubrication approximation and the averaging method, we formulate the coupled sets of equations governing the pulsatile and the averaged fluid flows in the film, and then derive the nonlinear amplitude equation for the averaged film thickness. We show that there exists a window in the frequency-amplitude domain where the parametric and shear-flow instabilities of the pulsatile flow do not emerge. As a consequence, in this window the averaged description …

Due to the tunability of their softness and volume as a function of temperature, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAm) hydrogel particles have emerged as a model system for soft colloidal spheres. By introducing AAc as comonomer, one can also tune the particle volume via pH. We report on the phase behavior of these stimuli-responsive colloids as measured with a microdialysis cell. This device, which integrates microfluidics with Particle Tracking Video-microscopy allows for simple and quick investigation of the phase behavior of suspensions the soft colloidal hydrogel as a function of pH as well as its packing density. In particular, we demonstrate the existence …

Quantifying Vertical Mixing In Estuaries, W. Rockwell Geyer, Malcolm E. Scully, David K. Ralston

Estuarine turbulence is notable in that both the dissipation rate and the buoyancy frequency extend to much higher values than in other natural environments. The high dissipation rates lead to a distinct inertial subrange in the velocity and scalar spectra, which can be exploited for quantifying the turbulence quantities. However, high buoyancy frequencies lead to small Ozmidov scales, which require high sampling rates and small spatial aperture to resolve the turbulent fluxes. A set of observations in a highly stratified estuary demonstrate the effectiveness of a vessel-mounted turbulence array for resolving turbulent processes, and for relating the turbulence to the …

The flow of a thin layer of fluid down an inclined plane is modified by the presence of insoluble surfactant. For any finite surfactant mass, traveling waves are constructed for a system of lubrication equations describing the evolution of the free-surface fluid height and the surfactant concentration. The one-parameter family of solutions is investigated using perturbation theory with three small parameters: the coefficient of surface tension, the surfactant diffusivity, and the coefficient of the gravity-driven diffusive spreading of the fluid. When all three parameters are zero, the nonlinear PDE system is hyperbolic/degenerateparabolic, and admits traveling wave solutions in which the …
Self-Organization In Cathode Boundary Layer Discharges, Nobuhiko Takano
Self-Organization In Cathode Boundary Layer Discharges, Nobuhiko Takano
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Cathode boundary layer (CBL) discharge, which has been developed as a UV light source, operates in a direct current between a planar cathode and a ring-shape anode that are separated by a dielectric with an opening of the same diameter as the anode. The nonthermal CBL discharges operate in a medium pressure range down to 30 Torr, emitting excimer radiation when operated with noble gases. The radiant excimer emittance at 172 nm in xenon reaches 1.7 W/cm2, and a maximum excimer efficiency of 6 % has been obtained. The high excimer radiant emittance, in addition to low cost …

Hydrodynamic And Magnetohydrodynamic Computations Inside A Rotating Sphere, P. D. Mininni, D. C. Montgomery, L. Turner
Dartmouth Scholarship
Numerical solutions of the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations are reported for the interior of a rotating, perfectly-conducting, rigid spherical shell that is insulator-coated on the inside. A previously-reported spectral method is used which relies on a Galerkin expansion in Chandrasekhar–Kendall vector eigenfunctions of the curl. The new ingredient in this set of computations is the rigid rotation of the sphere. After a few purely hydrodynamic examples are sampled (spin down, Ekman pumping, inertial waves), attention is focused on selective decay and the MHD dynamo problem. In dynamo runs, prescribed mechanical forcing excites a persistent velocity field, usually turbulent at modest …
A Theoretical Model For Blood Flow In Small Vessels, V. P. Srivastava
A Theoretical Model For Blood Flow In Small Vessels, V. P. Srivastava
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
A two-fluid model consisting of a core region of suspension of all the erythrocytes (particles) in plasma (fluid) assumed to be a particle-fluid mixture and a peripheral layer of cell-free plasma (Newtonian fluid), has been proposed to represent blood flow in small diameter tubes. The analytical results obtained in the proposed model for effective viscosity, velocity profiles and flow rate have been evaluated numerically for various values of the parameters available from published works. Quantitative comparison has shown that present model suitability represents blood flow at hematocrit (less than or equal to 40%) and in vessels up to 70 micrometers …
Slow Flow Between Concentric Cones, O. Hall, C. P. Hills, A. D. Gilbert
Slow Flow Between Concentric Cones, O. Hall, C. P. Hills, A. D. Gilbert
Articles
This paper considers the low-Reynolds-number flow of an incompressible fluid contained in the gap between two coaxial cones with coincident apices and bounded by a spherical lid. The two cones and the lid are allowed to rotate independently about their common axis, generating a swirling motion. The swirl induces a secondary, meridional circulation through inertial effects. For specific configurations complex eigenmodes representing an infinite sequence of eddies, analogous to those found in two-dimensional corner flows and some three-dimensional geometries, form a component of this secondary circulation. When the cones rotate these eigenmodes, arising from the geometry, compete with the forced …

Modeling Redox-Based Magnetohydrodynamics In Three-Dimensional Microfluidic Channels, Hussameddine S. Kabbani, Aihua Wang, Xiaobing Luo, Shizhi Qian
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research
RedOx-based magnetohydrodynamic MHD[1] flows in three-dimensional microfluidic channels are investigated theoretically with a coupled mathematical model consisting of the Nernst-Planck equations for the concentrations of ionic species, the local electroneutrality condition for the electric potential, and the Navier-Stokes equations for the flow field. A potential difference is externally applied across two planar electrodes positioned along the opposing walls of a microchannel that is filled with a dilute RedOx electrolyte solution, and a Faradaic current transmitted through the solution results. The entire device is positioned under a magnetic field which can be provided by either a permanent magnet or an electromagnet. …
Capillary-Driven Flows Along Rounded Interior Corners, Yongkang Chen, Mark M. Weislogel, Cory L. Nardin
Capillary-Driven Flows Along Rounded Interior Corners, Yongkang Chen, Mark M. Weislogel, Cory L. Nardin
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
The problem of low-gravity isothermal capillary flow along interior corners that are rounded is revisited analytically in this work. By careful selection of geometric length scales and through the introduction of a new geometric scaling parameter Tc, the Navier–Stokes equation is reduced to a convenient∼O(1) form for both analytic and numeric solutions for all values of corner half-angle α and corner roundedness ratio λ for perfectly wetting fluids. The scaling and analysis of the problem captures much of the intricate geometric dependence of the viscous resistance and significantly reduces the reliance on numerical data compared with several previous solution methods …
Flow Control Of Airfoil At Post-Stall Conditions By Multiple Frequency Applied Saado Jets, A. Şamil Demirsöz
Flow Control Of Airfoil At Post-Stall Conditions By Multiple Frequency Applied Saado Jets, A. Şamil Demirsöz
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Flow separation over lifting aerodynamic components, such as airfoils and wings, occurs during stall conditions which are caused by adverse changes (i.e.; high angle of attack, inflow conditions, etc.) in the operating conditions of aerodynamic components. During stall conditions, the flow over airfoil loses its momentum, creating high pressure zones on the upper surface of the airfoil and even a small increase in pressure causes the fluid particles to stop and separate to a low pressure zone. In order to eliminate the flow separation, the low momentum flow should be removed in order to maintain the high momentum and low …

A Study Correlating Entropy Generation To Parameters Characterizing Thermal Comfort In A Conditioned Room, Sai Shrinivas Sreedharan
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Although significant advances have been made to analyze and study a room as an open thermodynamic system experiencing indoor airflow and heat exchanges with surroundings, studies incorporating entropy generation in the analysis have been sparse. This study focuses on correlating indoor thermal comfort with entropy generation, which hopefully will result in efficient utilization of energy supplied to the system. The problem that this thesis attempts to solve involves calculation of entropy production in conditioned space and its correlation to parameters that characterize thermal comfort. Thermal comfort in a conditioned space is governed by many thermal, mechanical and psychrometric parameters. The …

Viscoelastic Flow In Rotating Curved Pipes, Yitung Chen, Huajun Chen, Jinsuo Zhang, Benzhao Zhang
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research
Fully developed viscoelastic flows in rotating curved pipes with circular cross section are investigated theoretically and numerically employing the Oldroyd-B fluid model. Based on Dean’s approximation, a perturbation solution up to the secondary order is obtained. The governing equations are also solved numerically by the finite volume method. The theoretical and numerical solutions agree with each other very well. The results indicate that the rotation, as well as the curvature and elasticity, plays an important role in affecting the friction factor, the secondary flow pattern and intensity. The co-rotation enhances effects of curvature and elasticity on the secondary flow. For …
Computational Aerodynamics Study Of Ahmed Body Car Model, Rajat Trehan
Computational Aerodynamics Study Of Ahmed Body Car Model, Rajat Trehan
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Vehicle Aerodynamics has been the focus of study by researchers for centuries. This interest can be owed to increasing demand on fuel efficiency, vehicle top speed and acceleration performance. Interior aerodynamics, such as engine cooling, air conditioning, wind noise, stability, and cross wind sensitivity play key role in customer satisfaction. Hence a complete understanding of flow around the vehicle is prerequisite to achieve any of the above parameters. Aerodynamic development of motor vehicle is expensive. Much capital must be invested in test facilities such as wind tunnels and climate tunnels. The models are costly and at the beginning of a …

Assessing The Potential For Improved Scramjet Performance Through Application Of Electromagnetic Flow Control, Martin F. Lindsey
Theses and Dissertations
Hypersonic flight using scramjet propulsion bridges the gap between turbojets and rockets. Recent efforts focus on magnetogasdynamic (MGD) flow control to mitigate the problems of high thermomechanical loads and low efficiencies associated with scramjets. This research is the first flight-scale, three-dimensional computational analysis of a realistic scramjet to assess how MGD flow control improves scramjet performance. Developing a quasi-one dimensional design tool culminated in the first open source scramjet geometry. This geometry was tested with the Air Force Research Laboratory's electromagnetic computational code. To increase fidelity, an algorithm was developed to incorporate thermochemistry, resulting in the only open-source model of …
Development Of A Three-Dimensional Air Blast Propagation Model Based Upon The Weighted Average Flux Method, Stephen R. Mchale
Development Of A Three-Dimensional Air Blast Propagation Model Based Upon The Weighted Average Flux Method, Stephen R. Mchale
Theses and Dissertations
Accurate numerical modeling of complex, multi-dimensional shock propagation is needed for many Department of Defense applications. A three-dimensional code, based upon E.F. Toro's weighted average flux (WAF) method has been developed, tested, and validated. Code development begins with the introduction and application of all techniques in a single dimension. First-order accuracy is achieved via Godunov's scheme using an exact Riemann solver. Adaptive techniques, which employ approximate solutions, are implemented to improve computational efficiency. The WAF method produces second-order accurate solutions, but introduces spurious oscillations near shocks and contact discontinuities. Total variation diminishing (TVD) flux and weight limiting schemes are added …
Type Ii Quantum Computing Algorithm For Computational Fluid Dynamics, James A. Scoville
Type Ii Quantum Computing Algorithm For Computational Fluid Dynamics, James A. Scoville
Theses and Dissertations
An algorithm is presented to simulate fluid dynamics on a three qubit type II quantum computer: a lattice of small quantum computers that communicate classical information. The algorithm presented is called a three qubit factorized quantum lattice gas algorithm. It is modeled after classical lattice gas algorithms which move virtual particles along an imaginary lattice and change the particles’ momentums using collision rules when they meet at a lattice node. Instead of moving particles, the quantum algorithm presented here moves probabilities, which interact via a unitary collision operator. Probabilities are determined using ensemble measurement and are moved with classical communications …

We investigate wave solutions of a lubrication model for surfactant-driven flow of a thin liquid film down an inclined plane. We model the flow in one space dimension with a system of nonlinear PDEs of mixed hyperbolic-parabolic type in which the effects of capillarity and surface diffusion are neglected. Numerical solutions reveal distinct patterns of waves that are described analytically by combinations of traveling waves, some with jumps in height and surfactant concentration gradient. The various waves and combinations are strikingly different from what is observed in the case of flow on a horizontal plane. Jump conditions admit new shock …

The Asymptotics Of Neutral Curve Crossing In Taylor–Dean Flow, C. P. Hills, A. P. Bassom
The Asymptotics Of Neutral Curve Crossing In Taylor–Dean Flow, C. P. Hills, A. P. Bassom
Articles
The fluid flow between a pair of coaxial circular cylinders generated by the uniform rotation of the inner cylinder and an azimuthal pressure gradient is susceptible to both Taylor and Dean type instabilities. The flow can be characterised by two parameters: a measure of the relative magnitude of the rotation and pressure effects and a non-dimensional Taylor number. This work considers the small gap, large wavenumber limit for linear perturbations when the onset of the Taylor and Dean instabilities is concurrent. A consistent, matched asymptotic solution is found across the whole annular domain and identifies five regions of interest: two …

The variational principle of Hamilton is applied to develop an analytical formulation to describe the volume viscosity in fluids. The procedure described here differs from those used in the past in that a dissipative process is represented by the chemical affinity and progress variable (sometimes called "order parameter") of a reacting species. These state variables appear in the variational integral in two places: first, in the expression for the internal energy, and second, in a subsidiary condition accounting for the conservation of the reacting species. As a result of the variational procedure, two dissipative terms appear in the Navier-Stokes equation. …

We establish reciprocity relations of the Doi-Hess kinetic theory for rigid rod macromolecular suspensions governed by the strong coupling among an excluded volume potential, linear flow, and a magnetic field. The relation provides a reduction of the flow and field driven Smoluchowski equation: from five parameters for coplanar linear flows and magnetic field, to two field parameters. The reduced model distinguishes flows with a rotational component, which map to simple shear (with rate parameter) subject to a transverse magnetic field (with strength parameter), and irrotational flows, for which the reduced model consists of a triaxial extensional flow (with two extensional …
