Soret Effect On Transient Mhd Convective Flow Past A Semi-Infinite Vertical Porous Plate With Heat Sink And Chemical Reaction, K. Choudhury, N. Ahmed
Soret Effect On Transient Mhd Convective Flow Past A Semi-Infinite Vertical Porous Plate With Heat Sink And Chemical Reaction, K. Choudhury, N. Ahmed
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This problem concerns with an analytical study of heat and mass transfer on unsteady MHD convective flow past a semi-infinite porous vertical plate in presence of thermal diffusion, heat sink and chemical reaction. A uniform magnetic field is imposed transversely to the plate. The governing equations are solved by perturbation technique. The expressions for the velocity, temperature and concentration fields as well as transport properties are obtained in non-dimensional form. The influence of the physical parameters like magnetic field parameter, Schmidt number, Prandtl number, heat sink parameter, chemical reaction parameter and Soret number on these fields is discussed through graphs …
Quasi-Linearization Method With Rational Legendre Collocation Method For Solving Mhd Flow Over A Stretching Sheet With Variable Thickness And Slip Velocity Which Embedded In A Porous Medium, M. M. Khader
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The quasi-linearization method (QLM) and the rational Legendre functions are introduced here to present the numerical solution for the Newtonian fluid flow past an impermeable stretching sheet which embedded in a porous medium with a power-law surface velocity, variable thickness and slip velocity. Firstly, due to the high nonlinearity which yielded from the ordinary differential equation which describes the proposed physical problem, we construct a sequence of linear ODEs by using the QLM, hence the resulted equations become a system of linear algebraic equations. The comparison with the available results in the literature review proves that the obtained results via …

Similarity Analysis Of Three Dimensional Nanofluid Flow By Deductive Group Theoretic Method, Hemangini Shukla, Hema C. Surati, M. G. Timol
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The objective of this paper is to obtain similarity solution of three-dimensional nanofluid flow over flat surface stretched continuously in two lateral directions. Two independent variables from governing equations are reduced by applying deductive two parameter group theoretical method. Partial differential equations with boundary conditions are converted into ordinary differential equations with appropriate boundary conditions. Obtained equations are solved for temperature and velocity. The effect of nanoparticles volume fraction on temperature and velocity profile is investigated.

Numerical Studies For Mhd Flow And Gradient Heat Transport Past A Stretching Sheet With Radiation And Heat Production Via Dtm, Khadijah M. Abualnaja
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This paper presents a numerically study for the effect of the internal heat generation, magnetic field and thermal radiation effects on the flow and gradient heat transfer of a Newtonian fluid over a stretching sheet. By using a similarity transformation, the governing PDEs can be transformed into a coupled non-linear system of ODEs with variable coefficients. Numerical solutions for these equations subject to appropriate boundary conditions are obtained by using the differential transformation method (DTM). The effects of various physical parameters such as viscosity parameter, the suction parameter, the radiation parameter, internal heat generation or absorption parameter and the Prandtl …

Numerical Treatment For The Flow Of Casson Fluid And Heat Transfer Model Over An Unsteady Stretching Surface In The Presence Of Internal Heat Generation/Absorption And Thermal Radiation, Mohammed M. Babatin
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Several important industrial and engineering problems are very difficult to solve analytically since they are high nonlinear. The Chebyshev spectral collocation method possesses an ability to predict the solution behavior for a system of high nonlinear ordinary differential equations. This method which is based on differentiated Chebyshev polynomials is introduced to obtain an approximate solution to the system of ordinary differential equations which physically describe the flow and heat transfer problem of an unsteady Casson fluid model taking into consideration both heat generation and radiation effects in the temperature equation. Based on the spectral collocation method, the obtained solution is …

Linear Stability Analysis With Solution Patterns Due To Varying Thermal Diffusivity For A Convective Flow In A Porous Medium, Dambaru Bhatta
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Here we investigate the effect of the vertical rate of change in thermal diffusivity due to a hydrothermal convective flow in a horizontal porous medium. The continuity equation, the heat equation and the momentum-Darcy equation constitute the governing system for the flow in a porous medium. Assuming a vertically varying basic state, we derive the linear system and from this linear system, we compute the critical Rayleigh and wave numbers. Using fourth-order Runge-Kutta and shooting methods, we obtain the marginal stability curves and linear solutions to analyze the solution pattern for different diffusivity parameters.

A rigid sphere entering a liquid bath does not always produce an entrained air cavity. Previous experimental work shows that cavity formation, or the lack thereof, is governed by fluid properties, wetting properties of the sphere, and impact velocity. In this study, wetting steel spheres are dropped into a water-surfactant mixture with and without passing through a bubble layer first. Surprisingly, in the case of a water-surfactant mixture without a bubble layer, the critical velocity for cavity formation becomes radius dependent. This occurs due to dynamic surface tension effects, with the local surface tension in the splash increasing during surface …

Interface Model Of Pem Fuel Cell Membrane Steady-Dtate Behavior, Russell L. Edwards, Ayodeji Demuren
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
Modeling works which simulate the proton-exchange membrane fuel cell with the computational fluid dynamics approach involve the simultaneous solution of multiple, interconnected physics equations for fluid flows, heat transport, electrochemical reactions, and both protonic and electronic conduction. Modeling efforts vary by how they treat the physics within and adjacent to the membrane-electrode assembly (MEA). Certain approaches treat the MEA not as part of the computational domain, but rather an interface connecting the anode and cathode computational domains. These approaches may lack the ability to consistently model catalyst layer losses and MEA ohmic resistance. This work presents an upgraded interface formulation …

Reversible Motion In A Contact Line, Audrey Profeta, Esmeralda Orozco, Juan A. Ortiz Salazar, Dani Medina, Nathan C. Keim
STAR Program Research Presentations
When a body of liquid sits on a surface, an irregular border between the wet and dry regions of the surface exists, called the contact line. Driving this contact line back and forth repeatedly can change its shape. We use a syringe pump to cyclically infuse and withdraw a predetermined volume of water, and take photos of the contact line after each cycle. Comparing these images to each other determines if the contact line is returning to the same shape. We find that below a critical value of infused volume, after many cycles the contact line reaches a steady state in …

Drainage, Rebound And Oscillation Of A Meniscus In A Tube, Jeremy Marston, Garrett Toyofuku, Chao Li, Tadd T. Truscott, Jamal Uddin
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
In this paper, the drainage and subsequent rebound of a liquid column in a cylindrical tube is examined experimentally and theoretically. When liquid is drawn up into a capillary and then released under gravity, inertia allows the meniscus to overshoot the equilibrium capillary rise height. The meniscus then rebounds up the tube, again overshooting the equilibrium height and undergoes oscillation. By varying both the immersion depth and radius of the tube, one can observe rich dynamical behavior, with the most dramatic being the formation of a fast liquid jet, barely visible to the naked eye but easily captured with high-speed …

Stability Of The Interface Between Two Immiscible Liquids During Injection Into A Tapered Hele-Shaw Cell, Zihao Lin, Ivan C. Christov, Daihui Lu
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
In the early twentieth century, petroleum and mining engineers noticed that water does not displace oil uniformly. This phenomenon, when water penetrates through oil, is now known as viscous fingering. This discovery and the following extensive research have contributed to enhancing oil recovery. In this paper, we describe a numerical study conducted on the stability of the interface between two immiscible liquids in converging and diverging Hele-Shaw cells with varying gradients. Hele-Shaw cells are narrow flow geometries that mimic the properties of a porous medium with fixed permeability. By using computational tools built on the OpenFOAM platform, the multiphase flow …

Fuel Flow Reduction Impact Analysis Of Drag Reducing Film Applied To Aircraft Wings, Damon Resnick, Chris Donlan, Nimish Sakalle, Cody Pinkerman
SMU Data Science Review
In this paper, we present an analysis of flight data in order to determine whether the application of the Edge Aerodynamix Conformal Vortex Generator (CVG), applied to the wings of aircraft, reduces fuel flow during cruising conditions of flight. The CVG is a special treatment and film applied to the wings of an aircraft to protect the wings and reduce the non-laminar flow of air around the wings during flight. It is thought that by reducing the non-laminar flow or vortices around and directly behind the wings that an aircraft will move more smoothly through the air and provide a …

Electro-Drop Bouncing In Low-Gravity, Erin Stivers Schmidt
Dissertations and Theses
We investigate the dynamics of spontaneous jumps of water drops from electrically charged superhydrophobic dielectric substrates during a sudden step reduction in gravity level. In the brief free-fall environment of a drop tower, with a non-homogeneous external electric field arising due to dielectric surface charges (with surface potentials 0.4-1.8 kV), body forces acting on the jumped drops are primarily supplied by polarization stress and Coulombic attraction instead of gravity. This electric body force leads to a drop bouncing behavior similar to well-known phenomena in 1-g0, though occurring for much larger drops (~0.5 mL). We show a simple …

Determining The Activation Energy Of Glucose Syrup Using The Arrhenius Equation, Utkarsh Sharma
The International Student Science Fair 2018
This experiment finds the activation energy of corn syrup using the Arrhenius equation. This was done through a simple experiment of dropping a ball into corn syrup and measuring its terminal velocity. From this, the viscosity could be derived, through the use of rearrangement of Newton’s First Law. The temperature of the corn syrup was also varied through the use of a microwave by raising it to 50 degrees Celsius. It is known that the more viscous a liquid is, the greater the activation energy for the liquid, which is essentially the energy barrier that a molecule has to overcome …

Wind Energy And Wind-Energy-Inspired Turbulent Wakes: Modulation Of Structures, Mechanisms And Flow Regimes, Elizabeth H. Camp
Dissertations and Theses
The interaction of turbulent wakes with one another and with the adjacent fluid directly impacts the generation of electricity in wind turbine arrays. Computational modeling is well suited to the repeated iterations of data generation that may be required to inform understanding of the function of wind farms as well as to develop control schemes for plant function. In order to perform such computational studies, a simplified model of the turbine must be implemented. One of the most computationally efficient parametrizations of the blade utilizes a stationary disk which has a prescribed drag and produces a wake. However, since accurate …

Study Of Spilled Oil Behavior On The Topsoil Induced By Thermal Diffusion, Nirmala P. Ratchagar, S. V. Hemalatha
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The fate and transport of oil spilled in soil has long been a focus for experimental and theoretical research in subsurface hydrology. Oil transport in the soil is affected by a large number of physical, chemical and microbial processes; and the properties of the media. This study is a two layer problem containing horizontal oil layer overlying the subsurface topsoil region saturated with oil and water (native fluid). To explain the method by which the convective flow in the oil region affect the transportation of oil, modeling is carried out in two regions (oil and topsoil). The two dimensional, transient …

In the present paper, rotation and radiation effects on unsteady MHD flow passed an inclined plate with variable wall temperature and mass diffusion in the presence of Hall current has been studied. The fluid considered is viscous, incompressible and electrically conducting. Earlier, we have studied unsteady MHD flow past an impulsively started inclined plate with variable temperature and mass diffusion. In that study we had analyzed the effect of Hall current (2016). We obtained the results which were in agreement with the desired flow phenomenon. To study further, we are changing the model by considering radiation and rotation effect on …
A 3d Simulation Of Leukocyte Adhesion In Blood Flow, Tai-Hsien Wu
A 3d Simulation Of Leukocyte Adhesion In Blood Flow, Tai-Hsien Wu
Dissertations
It has been widely acknowledged that further understanding about the dynamics between blood cells and blood flow can help us gain more knowledge about the causes of diseases and discover more effective treatments. Examples of such dynamics include red blood cell (RBC, or erythrocyte) aggregation, white blood cell (WBC, or leukocyte) margination, and WBC extravasation. WBC extravasation is an important multiple-step process in the inflammatory response and therefore has drawn considerable attention over the past two decades. In this multiple-step process, a WBC undergoes at least four steps, including capture, rolling, firm adhesion, and transmigration, and each step is influenced …

Finite Element Solution Of The Two-Dimensional Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations Using Matlab, Endalew G. Tsega, V. K. Katiyar
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The Navier–Stokes equations are fundamental in fluid mechanics. The finite element method has become a popular method for the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations. In this paper, the Galerkin finite element method was used to solve the Navier-Stokes equations for two-dimensional steady flow of Newtonian and incompressible fluid with no body forces using MATLAB. The method was applied to the lid-driven cavity problem. The eight-noded rectangular element was used for the formulation of element equations. The velocity components were located at all of 8 nodes and the pressure variable is located at 4 corner of the element. From location of …

Cilia Transport For Micropolar Fluid Through A Uniform Cylindrical Tube, Y. A. Elmaboud, Tarek G. Emam
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The aim of this work is to study the role that the cilia motion plays in the transport of a micropolar fluid in a uniform cylindrical tube. The transport due to systems of beating cilia is responsible for the transport of bio-fluids in numerous physiological processes. Cylindrical coordinates are used to formulate the system of equations with the suitable boundary conditions governing the flow. Such system is then simplified through considering the long wavelength and low Reynolds number assumptions. Solutions are found for the velocity components, the pressure gradient, and the stream function which include many parameters such as the …

The hybrid Norwood operation is performed to treat hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Distal arch obstruction may compromise flow to the brain. In a variant of this procedure, a synthetic graft (reverse Blalock–Taussig shunt) is placed between the pulmonary trunk and innominate artery to improve upper torso blood flow. Thrombi originating in the graft may embolize to the brain. In this study, we used computational fluid dynamics and particle tracking to investigate the patterns of particle embolization as a function of the anatomic position of the reverse Blalock–Taussig shunt. The degree of distal arch obstruction and position of particle origin influence …

Dropped object are defined as any object that fall under its own weight from a previously static position or fell due to an applied force from equipment or a moving object. It is among the top ten causes of injuries and fatality in oil and gas industry. To solve this problem, several in-house tools and guidelines is developed over time to assess the risk of dropped objects on the sub-sea structures. This thesis focuses on compiling and comparing those methods in hope to improve the recommended practices available in the market. A simple modification is done on the in-house tools …
The Drag Coefficient Of Varying Dimple Patterns, James M. Seeley, Michael S. Crosser
The Drag Coefficient Of Varying Dimple Patterns, James M. Seeley, Michael S. Crosser
Senior Theses
There are many golf balls on the market today with varying dimple sizes, shapes, and distribution. These proprietary differences are all designed to reduce drag on the balls during flight, allowing golfers to hit the ball farther distances. There are limited published studies comparing how varying the dimples affects the reduction of drag. An experiment was developed in which golf balls were pulled through a water tank to measure the drag force acting on each ball. The water was chosen to allow for testing at slower velocities than the typical necessary speeds to cause turbulence for balls traveling in air. …
Physical Applications Of The Geometric Minimum Action Method, George L. Poppe Jr.
Physical Applications Of The Geometric Minimum Action Method, George L. Poppe Jr.
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis extends the landscape of rare events problems solved on stochastic systems by means of the \textit{geometric minimum action method} (gMAM). These include partial differential equations (PDEs) such as the real Ginzburg-Landau equation (RGLE), the linear Schroedinger equation, along with various forms of the nonlinear Schroedinger equation (NLSE) including an application towards an ultra-short pulse mode-locked laser system (MLL).
Additionally we develop analytical tools that can be used alongside numerics to validate those solutions. This includes the use of instanton methods in deriving state transitions for the linear Schroedinger equation and the cubic diffusive NLSE.
These analytical solutions are …
The Advection-Diffusion Equation And The Enhanced Dissipation Effect For Flows Generated By Hamiltonians, Michael Kumaresan
The Advection-Diffusion Equation And The Enhanced Dissipation Effect For Flows Generated By Hamiltonians, Michael Kumaresan
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
We study the Cauchy problem for the advection-diffusion equation when the diffusive parameter is vanishingly small. We consider two cases - when the underlying flow is a shear flow, and when the underlying flow is generated by a Hamiltonian. For the former, we examine the problem on a bounded domain in two spatial variables with Dirichlet boundary conditions. After quantizing the system via the Fourier transform in the first spatial variable, we establish the enhanced-dissipation effect for each mode. For the latter, we allow for non-degenerate critical points and represent the orbits by points on a Reeb graph, with vertices …
