In the near-weightless environment of orbiting spacecraft capillary forces dominate interfacial flow phenomena over unearthly large length scales. In current experiments aboard the International Space Station, partially open channels are being investigated to determine critical flow rate-limiting conditions above which the free surface collapses ingesting bubbles. Without the natural passive phase separating qualities of buoyancy, such ingested bubbles can in turn wreak havoc on the fluid transport systems of spacecraft. The flow channels under investigation represent geometric families of conduits with applications to liquid propellant acquisition, thermal fluids circulation, and water processing for life support. Present and near future experiments …
Asymptotic Multi-Layer Analysis Of Wind Over Unsteady Monochromatic Surface Waves, Shahrdad Sajjadi, Julian Hunt, Frederique Drullion
Asymptotic Multi-Layer Analysis Of Wind Over Unsteady Monochromatic Surface Waves, Shahrdad Sajjadi, Julian Hunt, Frederique Drullion
Publications
Asymptotic multi-layer analyses and computation of solutions for turbulent flows over steady and unsteady monochromatic surface wave are reviewed, in the limits of low turbulent stresses and small wave amplitude. The structure of the flow is defined in terms of asymptotically-matched thin-layers, namely the surface layer and a critical layer, whether it is ‘elevated’ or ‘immersed’, corresponding to its location above or within the surface layer. The results particularly demonstrate the physical importance of the singular flow features and physical implications of the elevated critical layer in the limit of the unsteadiness tending to zero. These agree with the variational …
Viscosity Dependence Of Faraday Wave Formation Thresholds, Lisa Michelle Slaughter
Viscosity Dependence Of Faraday Wave Formation Thresholds, Lisa Michelle Slaughter
Physics
This experiment uses an electromagnetic shaker to produce standing wave patterns on the surface of a vertically oscillating sample of silicon liquid. These surface waves, known as Faraday waves, form shapes such as squares, lines, and hexagons. They are known to be dependent upon the frequency and amplitude of the forcing as well as on the viscosity and depth of the liquid in the dish. At a depth of 4mm and for various silicon liquids having kinematic viscosities of 10, 20, and 38 cSt, we determined the acceleration at which patterns form for frequencies between 10 and 60 Hz. For …
Dispersion Of A Solute In Hartmann Two-Fluid Flow Between Two Parallel Plates, J. P. Kumar, J. C. Umavathi
Dispersion Of A Solute In Hartmann Two-Fluid Flow Between Two Parallel Plates, J. P. Kumar, J. C. Umavathi
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The paper presents an analytical solution for the dispersion of a solute in a conducting immiscible fluid flowing between two parallel plates in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. The fluids in both the regions are incompressible, electrically conducting and the transport properties are assumed to be constant. The channel walls are assumed to be electrically insulating. Separate solutions for each fluid are obtained and these solutions are matched at the interface using suitable matching conditions. The results are tabulated for various values of viscosity ratio, pressure gradient and Hartman number on the effective Taylor dispersion coefficient and volumetric …

Analytic Solution For The Drainage Of Sisko Fluid Film Down A Vertical Belt, A. M. Siddiqui, Hameed Ashraf, T. Haroon, A. Walait
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This paper deals with the drainage of Sisko fluid film down a vertical belt. It provides an approximate solution of the resulting non-linear and inhomogeneous ordinary differential equation using perturbation method (PM) and Adomian decomposition method (ADM). Comparison of the results obtained by both methods demonstrate that these series solutions are strictly identical but ADM is easy to compute and can be extended to any higher order. The important physical quantities like velocity profile, volume flow rate, average film velocity, shear stress, force exerted by the fluid film and vorticity vector are derived. The effects of fluid behaviour index, Stokes …

Mathematical Modelling Of Blood Flow Through Catheterized Artery Under The Influence Of Body Acceleration With Slip Velocity, S. U. Siddiqui, Sapna Geeta
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The flow of blood through stenosed catheterized artery with the effect of external body acceleration has been considered. The pulsatile flow behaviour of blood in an artery subjected to the pulsatile pressure gradient and slip velocity has been studied considering blood as a Newtonian fluid. The non-linear differential equations governing the fluid flow are solved using the perturbation method. The analytic expressions are derived for the velocity profile, flow rate, wall shear stress and effective viscosity. The computer codes are developed for the analysis of physiological parameters. The effects of various parameters on blood flow are discussed through graphs. It …

The Two-Phase Arterial Blood Flow With Or Without A Catheter And In The Presence Of A Single Or Multi Stenosis, Ani E. Garcia, Daniel N. Riahi
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
We consider the problem of blood flow in an artery with or without a catheter and in the presence of single or multi stenosis whose shape is based on the available experimental data for the stenosis in a human’s artery. The presence of stenosis in the artery, which locally narrows portion of the artery, can be a result of fatty materials such as cholesterol in the blood. The use of catheter is important as a standard tool for diagnosis and treatment in patience whose blood flow passage in the artery is affected adversely by the presence of the stenosis within …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Fluorescence spectroscopy is a widely used detection technology in many research and clinical assays. Further improvement to assay sensitivity may enable earlier diagnosis of disease, novel biomarker discovery, and ultimately, improved outcomes of clinical care along with reduction in costs. Near-infrared, surface-enhanced fluorescence (NIR-SEF) is a promising approach to improve assay sensitivity via simultaneous increase in signal with a reduction in background. This dissertation describes research conducted with the overall goal to determine the extent to which fluorescence in solution may be enhanced by altering specific variables involved in the formation of plasmonactive nanostructures of dye-labeled protein and silver nanoparticles …

A Study Of Energy Transfer Of Wind And Ocean Waves, Shahrdad Sajjadi, Mason Bray
Publications
To develop a better understanding of energy transfer between wind and different types of waves a model was created to determine growth factors and energy transfers on breaking waves and the resulting velocity vectors. This model was used to build on the research of Sajjadi et al (1996) on the growth of waves by sheared flow and takes models of wave velocities developed by Weber and Melsom (1993) and end energy transfer by Sajjadi, Hunt and Drullion (2012).

Hydro-Thermal Convective Solutions For An Aquifer System Heated From Below, Dambaru Bhatta
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
We investigate the effect of hydro-thermal convection in an aquifer system. It is assumed that the aquifer is bounded below and above by impermeable boundaries and it is heated from below. The solution of the governing system is expressed in terms of the basic steady state solution and perturbed solution. We obtain the critical Rayleigh number and critical wavenumber using Runge-Kutta method in combination of shooting method and present the marginal stability curve. The amplitude equation is derived by introducing the adjoint system. After amplitude is obtained, we compute the linear solutions for super-critical and sub-critical cases. Numerical results for …

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The unsteady free convection boundary layer flow of a thermo-micropolar fluid along a vertical plate has been investigated in this paper. The temperature of the plate is assumed to be oscillating about a mean temperature, θw(x), with small amplitude ε. The governing boundary layer equations are analyzed using straight forward finite difference method. The effects of the material parameters such as micropolar heat conduction parameter, N*, the vortex viscosity parameter, K, on the shear stress,𝛕w, surface heat transfer, qw, and the couple-stress, mw, have been investigated.

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper the instability (fingering) phenomenon in a double phase immiscible (oil and water) flow through the homogeneous porous medium with mean capillary pressure in the vertical downward direction is discussed. The mathematical formulation of this problem yields a nonlinear partial differential equation and the generalised separable solution is given in the exponential form. The numerical solution and graphical presentation is given using MAT LAB coding.

Thermal Convection In A Couple-Stress Fluid In The Presence Of Horizontal Magnetic Field With Hall Currents, Jaimala And Vikrant, Vivek Kumar
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The thermal stability of a couple-stress fluid is considered to include the effects of uniform horizontal magnetic field and Hall currents. The analysis is carried out within the framework of linear stability theory and normal made technique. For the case of stationary convection, magnetic field has stabilizing effect whereas Hall currents are found to have destabilizing effect on the system. The couple stress, however, has dual character in contrast to its stabilizing effect in the absence of Hall currents. Oscillatory modes are not allowed in the system. Graphs in each case have been plotted by giving numerical values to the …

Design And Fabrication Of Nanofluidic Systems With Integrated Sensing Electrodes For Rapid Biomolecule Characterization, Taylor Bradley Busch
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A transparent nanofluidic system with embedded sensing electrodes was designed and fabricated by integrating Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) nanolithography, Focused Ion Beam (FIB) milling and metal deposition, and standard microfabrication processing. The fabrication process started with the evaporation of chrome/gold (Cr/Au) onto a Pyrex 7740 wafer followed by photolithography and wet etching of the microchannels. The wafer was patterned a second time to form Au microelectrodes with 15-45 micrometer separation gaps in the nanochannel region. Sensing electrodes (up to one micron wide) were then deposited using FIB to bridge the gaps. The nanochannels were realized through both AFM nanolithography and …

Characterization Of A Spiral Microfluidic Focusing Device For Continuous Single Cell Impedance-Based Cytometry Applications, Daniel Riley
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A major focus in the field of cell characterization is the quantification of cell dielectric properties in order to develop low-cost, portable microfluidic devices that can, among other things, perform point-of-care detection of rare diseases and complete blood counts. Impedance-based cytometry has become an advantageous tool to ascertain these properties, wherein it is important that cells pass through the same point in a channel cross-section one at a time to ensure accurate and repeatable readings. This study documents the assessment of an 8-loop 160 μm (W) x 80 μm (H) spiral microchannel used to focus 10 μm polystyrene particles. In …

Simulations Of Surfactant Driven Thin Film Flow, Shreyas Kumar
HMC Senior Theses
This thesis is intended to fulfill the requirements of the Math and Physics departments at Harvey Mudd College. We begin with a brief introduction to the study of surfactant dynamics followed by some background on the experimental framework our work is related to. We then go through a derivation of the model we use, and explore in depth the nature of the Equation of State (EoS), the relationship between the surface tension on a fluid and the surfactant concentration. We consider the effect of using an empirical equation of state on the results of the simulations and compare the new …

Distal Placement Of An End-To-Side Bypass Graft Anastomosis: A 3d Computational Study, John Di Cicco, Ayodeji Demuren
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
A three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics study of shear rates around distal end-to-side anastomoses has been conducted. Three 51% and three 75% cross-sectional area-reduced 6 mm cylinders were modeled each with a bypass cylinder attached at a 30-degree angle at different placements distal to the constriction. Steady, incompressible, Newtonian blood flow was assumed, and the full Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, turbulent kinetic energy, and specific dissipation rate equations were solved on a locally structured multiblock mesh with hexahedral elements. Consequently, distal placement of an end-to-side bypass graft anastomosis was found to have an influence on the shear rate magnitudes. For the …

Non-Equilibrium Pressure Control Of The Height Of A Large-Scale, Ground-Coupled, Rotating Fluid Column, R. L. Ash, I. R. Zardadhkan
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
When a ground-coupled, rotating fluid column is modeled incorporating non-equilibrium pressure forces in the Navier-Stokes equations, a new exact solution results. The solution has been obtained in a similar manner to the classical equilibrium solution. Unlike the infinite-height, classical solution, the non-equilibrium pressure solution yields a ground-coupled rotating fluid column of finite height. A viscous, non-equilibrium Rankine vortex velocity distribution, developed previously, was used to demonstrate how the viscous and non-equilibrium pressure gradient forces, arising in the vicinity of the velocity gradient discontinuity that is present in the classical Rankine vortex model, effectively isolate the rotating central fluid column from …
