Mathematical Modeling And Computation Of Channel Flow Over Discrete Structures, Rolando J. Olivares, Daniel N. Riahi Jun 2011

Mathematical Modeling And Computation Of Channel Flow Over Discrete Structures, Rolando J. Olivares, Daniel N. Riahi

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper mathematical modeling and computation of channel flow over small discrete structures are carried out under some reasonable conditions. A mathematical model for such a flow problem, which is based on a relevant system of partial differential equations and Fourier analysis, is studied using perturbation and nonlinear stability methods, and the resulting flow solutions over two types of discrete structures are computed under both stable and unstable conditions. It was found, in particular, that for a subcritical domain with the Reynolds number R slightly less than its critical value Rc, which is defined as the value below which …

A Two-Layered Non-Newtonian Arterial Blood Flow Through An Overlapping Constriction, V. P. Srivastava, Rochana Vishnoi, Shailesh Mishra, Poonam Sinha

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The problem of blood flow through an overlapping constriction in arteries is investigated in this work. To account for the non-Newtonian behavior and the peripheral layer, blood has been represented by a two-fluid model, consisting of a core region of suspension of all the erythrocytes assumed to be a Casson fluid and a peripheral layer of plasma (Newtonian fluid). The expression for the flow characteristics, namely, the impedance, the wall shear stress, the shear stress at the stenosis throats and at the critical height of the stenosis has been derived. Moreover, we present some results concerning the dependence of these …

Blood Flow Through A Composite Stenosis In An Artery With Permeable Wall, Shailesh Mishra, S. U. Siddiqui, Amit Medhavi

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The present work concerns the fluid mechanical study on the effects of the permeability of the wall through an artery with a composite stenosis. The expressions for the blood flow characteristics, the flow resistance, the wall shear stress, shearing stress at the stenosis throat have been derived. Results for the effect of permeability on these flow characteristics are shown graphically and discussed briefly.

Ferrofluids, James Patt Jun 2011

Ferrofluids, James Patt

Physics

Ferrofluids are truly fascinating. Technologically savvy artists have been able to capture the human imagination with little but a judicious application of a magnetic field. The substance seems to defy gravity, flowing and shaping itself seemingly like magic (see Figure 1). The true magic, however, is the vast range of properties that this intrinsically simple substance can exhibit. It can vary its viscosity given the strength of the magnetic field. It can draw heat away from an over worked mechanical component. It can even split a beam of light in two. It’s hard to imagine what kind of strange and …

Simulations Of Surfactant Spreading, Jeffrey Wong May 2011

Simulations Of Surfactant Spreading, Jeffrey Wong

HMC Senior Theses

Thin liquid films driven by surface tension gradients are studied in diverse applications, including the spreading of a droplet and fluid flow in the lung. The nonlinear partial differential equations that govern thin films are difficult to solve analytically, and must be approached through numerical simulations. We describe the development of a numerical solver designed to solve a variety of thin film problems in two dimensions. Validation of the solver includes grid refinement studies and comparison to previous results for thin film problems. In addition, we apply the solver to a model of surfactant spreading and make comparisons with theoretical …

High Pressure – Variable Temperature Studies On Pressure Transmitting Media, Vahe Mkrtchyan, Jason Baker, Matthew K. Jacobsen, Ravhi S. Kumar, Andrew Cornelius

Festival of Communities: UG Symposium (Posters)

The pressure transmitting medium is an important element in high pressure physics. A variety of pressure transmitting media exist including Silicone fluid, Daphne Oil, 4:1 Methanol:Ethanol mixture, etc. In this experiment, the hydrostatic limits of pressure transmitting media have been observed at low temperatures and high pressures. In this case, 4:1 Methanol: Ethanol has been used. The hydrostaticity of 4:1 Methanol:Ethanol has been well studied at room temperatures using the fluorescence of ruby by fitting the R1 and R2 lines to Pseudo-Voigt functions. The hydrostacity of the pressure medium was determined by analyzing the full width at half max (FWHM) …

Stability Of A Strongly Anisotropic Thin Epitaxial Film In A Wetting Interaction With Elastic Substrate, Mikhail Khenner, Wondimu T. Tekalign, Margo S. Levine

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The linear dispersion relation for longwave surface perturbations, as derived by Levine et al. Phys. Rev. B 75, 205312 (2007) is extended to include a smooth surface energy anisotropy function with a variable anisotropy strength (from weak to strong, such that sharp corners and slightly curved facets occur on the corresponding Wulff shape). Through detailed parametric studies it is shown that a combination of a wetting interaction and strong anisotropy, and even a wetting interaction alone results in complicated linear stability characteristics of strained and unstrained films.

Boundary Condition On Electron Temperature For Antiforce Current Bearing Waves, M. Hemmati, W. P. Childs, D. C. Waters, J. D. Counts, J. K. Schmitt

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

In our investigation of breakdown waves, we apply a one-dimensional, three-component, steady-state fluid model. The wave is considered to be shock fronted and the electrons are assumed to be the main element in propagation of the wave. In our fluid model, the electron gas temperature is assumed to be large enough to sustain the wave motion. Our set of fluid equations is composed of the equations of conservation of mass, momentum and energy plus the Poisson’s equation. This investigation involves breakdown waves for which a large current exist in the vicinity of the wave front. Existence of current behind the …

Python Modeling Of Heat Flow In A Thermal Storage Device, Tim Hider

Physics

A parabolic dish that concentrates sunlight into a thermal storage device may comprise an inexpensive, environmentally benign, clean cooking technology appropriate for developing countries. A Scheffler Solar reflector was constructed and a thermal storage device built to eventually be coupled with the Scheffler. We tested the heat flow in the thermal storage device with an electric heater, and wrote Python code that solves the heat diffusion in 1D and 2D in order to model heat flow in the thermal storage device.

A Cell Electrofusion Microfluidic Device Integrated With 3d Thin-Film Microelectrode Arrays, Ning Hu, Jun Yang, Shizhi Qian, Sang W. Joo, Xiaolin Zheng

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

A microfluidic device integrated with 3D thin film microelectrode arrays wrapped around serpentine-shaped microchannel walls has been designed, fabricated and tested for cell electrofusion. Each microelectrode array has 1015 discrete microelectrodes patterned on each side wall, and the adjacent microelectrodes are separated by coplanar dielectric channel wall. The device was tested to electrofuse K562 cells under a relatively low voltage. Under an AC electric field applied between the pair of the microelectrode arrays, cells are paired at the edge of each discrete microelectrode due to the induced positive dielectrophoresis. Subsequently, electric pulse signals are sequentially applied between the microelectrode arrays …

The Influence Of Pressure Relaxation On The Structure Of An Axial Vortex, Robert L. Ash, Irfan Zardadkhan, Allan J. Zuckerwar Jan 2011

The Influence Of Pressure Relaxation On The Structure Of An Axial Vortex, Robert L. Ash, Irfan Zardadkhan, Allan J. Zuckerwar

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Governing equations including the effects of pressure relaxation have been utilized to study an incompressible, steady-state viscous axial vortex with specified far-field circulation. When sound generation is attributed to a velocity gradient tensor-pressure gradient product, the modified conservation of momentum equations that result yield an exact solution for a steady, incompressible axial vortex. The vortex velocity profile has been shown to closely approximate experimental vortex measurements in air and water over a wide range of circulation-based Reynolds numbers. The influence of temperature and humidity on the pressure relaxation coefficient in air has been examined using theoretical and empirical approaches, and …

Parametric Study On Instabilities In A Two-Layer Electromagnetohydrodynamic Channel Flow Confined Between Two Parallel Electrodes, P. Dinesh Sankar Reddy, Dipankar Bandyopadhyay, Sang Woo Joo, Ashutosh Sharma, Shizhi Qian

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Instabilities in a two-phase electromagnetohydrodynamic (EMHD) flow between a pair of parallel electrodes are explored. A linear stability analysis has been performed based on a coupled Orr-Sommerfeld system generated from the conservation laws. The study shows the presence of a finite-wave-number EMHD mode of instability in addition to the two commonly observed instability modes in the pressure-driven two-layer flows, namely, the long-wave interfacial mode arising from the viscosity or density stratification and the finite-wave-number shear flow mode engendered by the Reynolds stresses. This extra EMHD mode originates from the additional stresses generated by the Lorenz force acting at the liquid …

Numerics Of The Lattice Boltzmann Method: Effects Of Collision Models On The Lattice Boltzmann Simulations, Li-Shi Luo, Wei Liao, Xingwang Chen, Yan Peng, Wei Zhang

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

We conduct a comparative study to evaluate several lattice Boltzmann (LB) models for solving the near incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, including the lattice Boltzmann equation with the multiple-relaxation-time (MRT), the two-relaxation-time (TRT), the single-relaxation-time (SRT) collision models, and the entropic lattice Boltzmann equation (ELBE). The lid-driven square cavity flow in two dimensions is used as a benchmark test. Our results demonstrate that the ELBE does not improve the numerical stability of the SRT or the lattice Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (LBGK) model. Our results also show that the MRT and TRT LB models are superior to the ELBE and LBGK models in terms of …

On A Couple-Stress Fluid Heated From Below In Hydromagnetics, Vivek Kumar, Sudhir Kumar Dec 2010

On A Couple-Stress Fluid Heated From Below In Hydromagnetics, Vivek Kumar, Sudhir Kumar

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The combined effect of dust particles, magnetic field and rotation on a couple-stress fluid heated from below is considered. For the case of stationary convection, dust particles are found to have a destabilizing effect on the system, whereas the rotation is found to have stabilizing effect on the system. Couple-stress and magnetic field are found to have both stabilizing and destabilizing effects under certain conditions. The oscillatory modes are introduced due to the presence of magnetic field and rotation in the system. The results are presented through graphs in each case.

Particulate Suspension Blood Flow Through A Stenosed Catheterized Artery, V. P. Srivastava, Rochana Vishnoi, Poonam Sinha Dec 2010

Particulate Suspension Blood Flow Through A Stenosed Catheterized Artery, V. P. Srivastava, Rochana Vishnoi, Poonam Sinha

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The flow of blood through a narrow catheterized artery with an overlapping stenosis has been investigated. To account for the presence of red cells, blood has been represented by a macroscopic two-phase model (i.e., a suspension of erythrocytes in plasma). The expression for the flow characteristics-the flow rate, the impedance (resistance to flow), the wall shear stress in the stenotic region, the shear stresses at the stenosis two throats and at critical height of the stenosis, has been derived. It is found that the impedance increases with the catheter size, with the hematocrit and also with the stenosis size (height …

Two-Layered Pulsatile Blood Flow In A Stenosed Artery With Body Acceleration And Slip At Wall, Devajyoti Biswas, Uday Shankar Chakraborty

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Pulsatile flow of blood through an artery in presence of a mild stenosis has been investigated in this paper assuming the body fluid blood as a two-fluid model with the suspension of all the erythrocytes in the core region as Bingham Plastic and the peripheral region of plasma as a Newtonian fluid. This model has been used to study the influence of body acceleration, non- Newtonian nature of blood and a velocity slip at wall, in blood flow through stenosed arteries. By employing a perturbation analysis, analytic expressions for the velocity profile, Plug-core radius, flow rate, wall shear stress and …

Bound For The Complex Growth Rate In Thermosolutal Convection Coupled With Cross-Diffusions, Hari Mohan Sharma

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Thermosolutal convection problem of the Veronis’ type coupled with cross–diffusion is considered in the present paper. A semi -circle theorem that prescribes upper limit for the complex growth rate of oscillatory motions of neutral or growing amplitude in such a manner that it naturally culminates in sufficient conditions precluding the non- existence of such motions is derived. Further, results for thermosolutal convection problems with or without the individual consideration of Dufour and Soret effects follow as a consequence.

The Combined Effect Of Chemical Reaction, Radiation, Mhd On Mixed Convection Heat And Mass Transfer Along A Vertical Moving Surface, Navneet Joshi, Manoj Kumar

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper discusses the effect of Chemical reaction, Radiation and MHD on laminar mixed convection boundary layer flow and heat and mass transfer on continuously moving vertical surface. The fluid viscosity is assumed to vary as an inverse linear function of temperature and local similarity solutions are obtained for the boundary layer equations subject to isothermally moving vertical surface with uniform speed. The system of non-linear partial differential equations developed in the process is finally transformed into a set of ordinary differential equations with the help of similarity transformations involved in the problem. This set of equations is for different …

Prediction Of Shock Diamonds And Mach Disk In An Under-Expanded Air Jet, Praveen D. Malali

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The present study involves performing simulations, using the commercially available CFD code Fluent, to obtain under-expanded jet flow structures for different values of nozzle pressure ratio (NPR). A fluid flow domain comprised of a converging nozzle attached to a plenum chamber is discretized, using triangular cells, in the pre-processing software Gambit, companion software to Fluent. The test of grid independence is carried out by performing simulations for NPR value of 10 using three discretized flow domains, referred to as a mesh or a grid, with varying cell numbers. Two models, namely the inviscid compressible flow model, employing Euler equations, and …

Negative Dielectrophoretic Capture Of Bacterial Spores In Food Matrices, Mehti Koklu, Seungkyung Park, Suresh D. Pillai, Ali Beskok

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

A microfluidic device with planar square electrodes is developed for capturing particles from high conductivity media using negative dielectrophoresis (n-DEP). Specifically, Bacillus subtilis and Clostridium sporogenes spores, and polystyrene particles are tested in NaCl solution (0.05 and 0.225 S/m), apple juice (0.225 S/m), and milk (0.525 S/m). Depending on the conductivity of the medium, the Joule heating produces electrothermal flow (ETF), which continuously circulates and transports the particles to the DEP capture sites. Combination of the ETF and n-DEP results in different particle capture efficiencies as a function of the conductivity. Utilizing 20 μm height DEP chambers, “almost complete” and …

For the stable configuration, in the hydro magnetic case also, the system is found to be stable or unstable. However, for the unstable configuration, the magnetic field and viscoelasticity have got stabilizing effects. The system is found to be unstable for the potentially …

Effects Of Radiation And Variable Viscosity On Mhd Free Convective Flow And Mass Transfer Over A Stretching Sheet With Chemical Reaction, M. A. Seddeek, A. A. Almushigeh

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

A similarity solution is proposed for the analysis of steady free convection heat and mass transfer over a stretching sheet. The effect of radiation, chemical reaction and variable viscosity on hydromagnetic heat and mass transfer in the presence of magnetic field are investigated. The governing partial differential equations are transformed to the ordinary differential equations using similarity variables, and then solved numerically by means of the fourth-order Runge– Kutta method with shooting technique. A comparison with exact solution is performed and the results are found to be in excellent. Numerical results for the velocity, temperature and concentration as well as …

Multi-Element Airfoil Optimization Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Mustafa Kubilay Ictuzer

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

High-lift systems are frequently used on commercial transport aircrafts to obtain low speed performance, in terms of take-off and landing field lengths and approach speed. To maximize the take-off and landing performance within the critical restrictions required by the new generation transport wing designs, enhanced high-lift technologies are needed. Moreover, the economic realities faced by the airlines require a design that is mechanically simple and effective. These facts lead us to the optimization of the high lift systems.

Optimizing a high-lift system improves an aircraft's take-off and landing performance. The weight of the system, the advantages and the disadvantages all …
