Puddle Jumping: Spontaneous Ejection Of Large Liquid Droplets From Hydrophobic Surfaces During Drop Tower Tests, Babek Attari, Mark M. Weislogel, Andrew Paul Wollman, Yongkang Chen, Trevor Snyder
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Large droplets and puddles jump spontaneously from sufficiently hydrophobicsurfaces during routine drop tower tests. The simple low-cost passive mechanism can in turn be used as an experimental device to investigate dynamic droplet phenomena for drops up to 104 times larger than their normal terrestrial counterparts. We provide and/or confirm quick and qualitative design guides for such “drop shooters” as employed in drop tower tests including relationships to predict droplet ejection durations and velocities as functions of drop volume, surface texture, surface contour, wettability pattern, and fluid properties including contact angle. The latter is determined via profile image comparisons with numerical …
Particle Swarm Transport In Porous Media, Alison R. Hoe, Laura J Pyrak-Nolte
Particle Swarm Transport In Porous Media, Alison R. Hoe, Laura J Pyrak-Nolte
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
In recent years, interest in particulate transport in the subsurface has increased with the increased use of micro-particulates in consumer products. In this research, we study particulate swarm transport through porous media that depends on the complexity of the flow paths, on the size and shape of the particles and on the physical interactions among the particles, fluids, and matrix. Specifically, we investigate the effect of pore geometry and grain wettability on swarm evolution under gravity. Swarms were composed of 3 micron polystyrene beads in either water or water with KCL (%). Two types of grains are used to simulate …
A Fast Model For The Simulation Of External Gear Pumps, Zechao Lu, Xinran Zhao, Andrea Vacca
A Fast Model For The Simulation Of External Gear Pumps, Zechao Lu, Xinran Zhao, Andrea Vacca
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
External gear pump is an important category of positive displacement fluid machines used to perform the mechanical–hydraulic energy conversions in many fluid power applications. An efficient numerical simulation program is needed to simulate the system in order to provide a direction for design purpose. The model consists of a lumped parameter fluid dynamic model and a model that simulates the radial micro-motions of the gear’s axes of rotation. The system consists of a set of ordinary differential equations related to the conservation on mass of the internal control volumes of the pump, which are given by the tooth space volumes …
Deceleration Of Droplets That Glide Along The Free Surface Of A Bath, Jacob Hale, Caleb Akers
Deceleration Of Droplets That Glide Along The Free Surface Of A Bath, Jacob Hale, Caleb Akers
Physics & Astronomy Faculty publications
A droplet obliquely impacting a bath surface of the same fluid can traverse along the interface while slowing at an exponential rate. The droplet rests on a thin film of air and deforms the bath surface creating a dimple and travels along the surface similar to a wave pulse. Viscous coupling of the droplet and bath surfaces through the air film leads to viscous drag on the bath and perturbs the wave motion of the otherwise free surface. Even though Reynolds numbers are greater than unity (Re O(10 -- 100)), we show that the droplet's deceleration is only due to …
Growth Of Unsteady Wave Groups By Shear Flows, Shahrdad Sajjadi, Julian Hunt, Frederique Drullion
Growth Of Unsteady Wave Groups By Shear Flows, Shahrdad Sajjadi, Julian Hunt, Frederique Drullion
Publications
A weakly nonlinear theory has been proposed and developed for calculating the energy- transfer rate to individual waves in a group. It is shown what portion of total energy- transfer rate, over the envelope of wave group, affects individual waves in the group. From this an expression for complex phase speed of individual waves is calculated. It is deduced that each wave in a group does not grow at the same rate. It is shown that the critical layer is no longer symmetrical compared with the ideal monochromatic waves. This asymmetry causes the critical layer height to be lower over …

Growth Of Groups Of Wind Generated Waves, Frederique Drullion, Shahrdad Sajjadi
Publications
In this paper we demonstrate numerical computations of turbulent wind blowing over group of waves that are growing in time. The numerical model adopted for the turbulence model is based on differential second-moment model that was adopted for growing idealized waves by Drullion & Sajjadi (2014). The results obtained here demonstrate the formation of cat's-eye which appear asymmetrically over the waves within a group.

Large Length Scale Capillary Fluidics: From Jumping Bubbles To Drinking In Space, Andrew Paul Wollman
Large Length Scale Capillary Fluidics: From Jumping Bubbles To Drinking In Space, Andrew Paul Wollman
Dissertations and Theses
In orbit, finding the "bottom" of your coffee cup is a non-trivial task. Subtle forces often masked by gravity influence the containment and transport of fluids aboard spacecraft, often in surprising non-intuitive ways. Terrestrial experience with capillary forces is typically relegated to the micro-scale, but engineering community exposure to large length scale capillary fluidics critical to spacecraft fluid management design is low indeed. Low-cost drop towers and fast-to-flight International Space Station (ISS) experiments are increasing designer exposure to this fresh field of study. This work first provides a wide variety of drop tower tests that demonstrate fundamental and applied capillary …
Approximate Analytical Solution Of Boussinesq Equation In Homogeneous Medium With Leaky Base, Rajeev K. Bansal
Approximate Analytical Solution Of Boussinesq Equation In Homogeneous Medium With Leaky Base, Rajeev K. Bansal
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Approximate analytical solutions of Boussinesq equation are widely used for approximation of subsurface seepage flow in confined and unconfined aquifers under varying hydrological conditions. In this paper, we use a 2-dimensional linearized Boussinesq equation to simulate the water table fluctuations in an isotropic aquifer overlying a semi pervious bed under multiple localized recharge and withdrawal. The unconfined aquifer is considered to be in contact with two water bodies of constant water head along opposite cost lines, while the remaining two faces have no flow condition. The mathematical model is solved analytically using finite Fourier sine transform and the application of …
Mathematical Model To Study The Spread Of Spilled Oil In The Soil, Nirmala P. Ratchagar, S. V. Hemalatha
Mathematical Model To Study The Spread Of Spilled Oil In The Soil, Nirmala P. Ratchagar, S. V. Hemalatha
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
A mathematical model describing the spread of spilled oil through the soil is discussed. The spread of spilled oil in soil is controlled by the flow of water and is described by multiphase equations. In this context, the two-phase flow characteristics of oil-water flow with varying viscosity in the subsurface coupled to an advective-diffusion equation are examined to study the transport of oil. The terms that model the interaction between the multiple phases are introduced at the boundary, such as the slip condition at the porous-fluid interface, shear stress condition at the fluid-fluid interface, and the continuity of velocity at …
Non-Newtonian Prandtl Fluid Over Stretching Permeable Surface, N. R. Jain, M. G. Timol
Non-Newtonian Prandtl Fluid Over Stretching Permeable Surface, N. R. Jain, M. G. Timol
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
An analysis is made of the velocity and temperature distribution in the flow of a viscous incompressible fluid caused by the stretching permeable surface which issues in the Prandtl fluid. Parandtl fluid is a pseudoplastic visco-inelastic non-Newtonian fluid. The governing partial differential equations are reduced to ordinary differential equations using deductive group transformation and similarity solution is derived. Numerical solutions to the reduced non-linear similarity equations are then obtained by adopting shooting method using the Nachtsheim-Swigert iteration technique. The results of the numerical solution are then presented graphically in the form of velocity and temperature profiles. The corresponding skin friction …

Enhancement Of Heat Transfer In Elastico-Viscous Fluid Due To Nanoparticles, Where The Fluid Is Impinging Obliquely To The Stretchable Surface: A Numerical Study, Tariq Javed, Abuzar Ghaffari, Tasawar Hayat
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This article addresses the two-dimensional oblique stagnation point flow of non-Newtonian fluid in the presence of nanoparticles. Constitutive equations of Walter-B fluid are employed in the mathematical development of the relevant problems. Mathematical formulation includes the Brownian motion and thermophoresis effects. The resulting nonlinear system of equations are analyzed through Chebyshev Spectral Newton Iterative Scheme (CSNIS). A comparative study of present results through tabular values has been made with the previous results in a limiting sense and an excellent agreement is noted. It is also found that in near stagnation point region, the heat transfer rate and mass diffusion flux …

Effect Of Fluid Suction On An Oscillatory Mhd Channel Flow With Heat Transfer, N. Ahmed, A. H. Sheikh, D. P. Barua
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) is generally concerned with the study of the magnetic properties (behaviour) of electrically conducting fluids (plasmas, liquid metals etc.) moving in an electromagnetic field. The importance of the concept of MHD in various fields such as astrophysics, bio-medical research, missile technology and geophysics motivates the modelling and investigation of MHD flow and transport problems. The role of fluid suction is paramount in laminar flow control and has wide applications in fields such as aeronautical engineering, automobile engineering and rocket science. This fact inspires the study of the effects of fluid suction in flow and transport models. Time dependent …
Poroacuatics Under Brinkman's Model, David A. Rossmanith Jr.
Poroacuatics Under Brinkman's Model, David A. Rossmanith Jr.
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Through perturbation analysis, a study of the role of Brinkman viscosity in the propagation of finite amplitude harmonic waves is carried out. Interplay between various parameters, namely, frequency, Reynolds number and beta are investigated. For systems with physically realizable Reynolds numbers, departure from the Darcy Jordan model (DJM) is noted for high frequency signals. Low and high frequency limiting cases are discussed, and the physical parameters defining the acoustic propagation are obtained.
Through numerical analyses, the roles of Brinkman viscosity, the Darcy coefficient, and the coefficient of nonlinearity on the evolution of finite amplitude harmonic waves is stud- ied. An …
Particle Image Velocimetry Design & Installation, Zach Ritchie
Particle Image Velocimetry Design & Installation, Zach Ritchie
Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
This work will mainly focus on the design, construction, and installation of the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system in the Chemical Hazards Research Center wind tunnel. The PIV system utilizes a Class IV (double pulsed) laser, optics to produce a light sheet, timing circuitry, and a high-resolution camera (with buffered output) to measure a system’s velocity (two-dimensional) field by determining the displacement of particles over the time between laser pulses. For maximum mobility and functionality, the PIV system was installed in the center of the tunnel on a moveable cart with the laser and camera mounted to an adjustable support. …
Momentum Transfer To A Simplified Wind Turbine Blade, Myer D. Milbrath
Momentum Transfer To A Simplified Wind Turbine Blade, Myer D. Milbrath
Honors Theses
This project looks into the potential of simplified simulations as a supplement to wind turbine blade designs. The idea is to take a two-dimensional representation of a wind turbine blade and attempt to use a fluid flow simulation to determine which "aspect ratio" is the most efficient in the transfer of momentum. This is then compared to the current requirements for wind turbine blades to judge how accurate the simulation was. It was found that an aspect ratio of 16.66 percent was most efficient, however when compared to the requirements for a wind turbine blade this ratio only falls into …
Detection Of Acoustic Sources Using Time-Reversal Methods, Grant E. Tingstrom
Detection Of Acoustic Sources Using Time-Reversal Methods, Grant E. Tingstrom
Honors Theses
The goal of this research is to characterize the impact of using an equivalent-fluid method for a solid seabed on the use of time reversal procedures for detecting the origin location of an emitted sound. There are two different ways of modeling how sound propagates through water: modeling sound as a ray and modeling sound as a wave. It is easier to model the propagation of sound through water with a ray model; using a ray model allows for the collection of grazing angles with respect to the bottom. These will be important when determining bottom intensity loss of the …
Viscous Liquids And The Glass Transition At Extremely High Pressure: Optical Techniques Applied To Cumene In A Diamond Anvil Cell, Timothy Craig Ransom
Viscous Liquids And The Glass Transition At Extremely High Pressure: Optical Techniques Applied To Cumene In A Diamond Anvil Cell, Timothy Craig Ransom
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation presents the results from experiments studying the pressure-dependence of properties associated with the glass transition in the glass-forming liquid cumene. Through the use of a diamond anvil cell, we achieve extremely high pressures over 40,000 atmospheres. A new technique is refined to directly measure the glass transition temperature Tg extremely accurately, and we show that thermodynamic scaling is capable of describing the liquidglass transition boundary up to record-high pressures. Optical techniques are also implemented to probe the system dynamics in the viscous regime leading up to the glass transition. We present laser light-scattering measurements of the dynamic susceptibility …
Energy Transfer From Wind To Wave Groups: Theory And Experiment, Andrei Ludu, Shahrdad G. Sajjadi
Energy Transfer From Wind To Wave Groups: Theory And Experiment, Andrei Ludu, Shahrdad G. Sajjadi
Publications
Three major unresolved problems that remain in oceanography are studied in depth, namely (a) unsteady waves, where waves are allowed to grow or decay in time and space; (b) sharp-crested waves (also known as fully nonlinear Stoke waves), which are note characteristic in oceans; and (c) group of waves, which can often become sharp crested as they propagate downstream, as demonstrated here experimentally in a wave tank. The ultimate aim of such investigation is to improve the parameterization of the energy input from wind to waves. In this paper, we (i) present results on the simplest approximation to wave groups …

Spatio-Temporal Linear Stability Analysis Of Stratified Planar Wakes: Velocity And Density Asymmetry Effects, Benjamin Emerson, Swapnil Jagtap, J. Mathew Quinlan, Michael W. Renfro, Baki M. Cetegen, Tim Lieuwen
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper explores the hydrodynamic stability of bluff body wakes with non-uniform mean density, asymmetric mean density, and velocity profiles. This work is motivated by experiments [S. Tuttle et al., “Lean blow off behavior of asymmetrically-fueled bluff body-stabilized flames,” Combust. Flame 160, 1677 (2013)], which investigated reacting wakes with equivalence ratio stratification and, hence, asymmetry in the base flow density profiles. They showed that highly stratified cases exhibited strong, narrowband oscillations, suggestive of global hydrodynamic instability. In this paper, we present a local hydrodynamic stability analysis for non-uniform density wakes that includes base flow asymmetry. The results show …
Growth Of Stokes Waves Induced By Wind On A Viscous Liquid Of Infinite Depth, Shahrdad Sajjadi
Growth Of Stokes Waves Induced By Wind On A Viscous Liquid Of Infinite Depth, Shahrdad Sajjadi
Publications
The original investigation of Lamb (1932, x349) for the effect of viscosity on monochromatic surface waves is extended to account for second-order Stokes surface waves on deep water in the presence of surface tension. This extension is used to evaluate interfacial impedance for Stokes waves under the assumption that the waves are growing and hence the surface waves are unsteady. Thus, the previous investigation of Sajjadi et al. (2014) is further explored in that (i) the surface wave is unsteady and nonlinear, and (ii) the effect of the water viscosity, which affects surface stresses, is taken into account. The determination …

More Investigations In Capillary Fluidics Using A Drop Tower, Andrew Paul Wollman, Mark M. Weislogel, Brentley M. Wiles, Donald Pettit, Trevor Snyder
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A variety of contemplative demonstrations concerning intermediate-to-large length scale capillary fluidic phenomena were made possible by the brief weightless environment of a drop tower (Wollman and Weislogel in Exp Fluids 54(4):1, 2013). In that work, capillarity-driven flows leading to unique spontaneous droplet ejections, bubble ingestions, and multiphase flows were introduced and discussed. Such efforts are continued herein. The spontaneous droplet ejection phenomena (auto-ejection) is reviewed and demonstrated on earth as well as aboard the International Space Station. This technique is then applied to novel low-g droplet combustion where soot tube structures are created in the wakes of burning drops. …

Evolution Of Spherical Cavitation Bubbles: Parametric And Closed-Form Solutions, S.C. Mancas, Haret C. Rosu
Publications
We present an analysis of the Rayleigh-Plesset equation for a three dimensional vacuous bubble in water. In the simplest case when the effects of surface tension are neglected, the known parametric solutions for the radius and time evolution of the bubble in terms of a hypergeometric function are briefly reviewed. By including the surface tension, we show the connection between the Rayleigh-Plesset equation and Abel’s equation, and obtain the parametric rational Weierstrass periodic solutions following the Abel route. In the same Abel approach, we also provide a discussion of the nonintegrable case of nonzero viscosity for which we perform a …

Effect Of Spalled Particles Thermal Degradation On A Hypersonic Flow Field Environment, Raghava S. C. Davuluri, Huaibao Zhang, Alexandre Martin
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Two-way coupling is performed between a spallation code and a hypersonic aerothermodynamics CFD solver to evaluate the effect of spalled particles on the flow field. Time accurate solutions are computed in argon and air flow fields. A single particle simulations and multiple particles simulations are performed and studied. The results show that the carbon vapor released by spalled particles tend to change the composition of the flow field, particularly the upstream region of the shock.
