Simulation Of Compound Flood Events In Low-Gradient Coastal Watershed, Felix Luis Santiago-Collazo
Simulation Of Compound Flood Events In Low-Gradient Coastal Watershed, Felix Luis Santiago-Collazo
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Low-gradient coastal watersheds are susceptible to flooding caused by various flows such as rainfall, tides, and storm surge. Compound flooding occurs when at least two of these mechanisms happen simultaneously or in close succession. Different inundation models, observed data, and/or a combination of these are coupled through varying techniques involving one-way, loosely, tightly, or fully coupled approaches to assess compound flooding. This study presents a one-dimensional (1-D), fully coupled compound inundation model based on the Shallow Water equations. This model approach simultaneously simulates the free water surface variations in the ocean domain (i.e., tide and storm surge modeling), rainfall-runoff in …
Soarnet, Deep Learning Thermal Detection For Free Flight, Jake T. Tallman
Soarnet, Deep Learning Thermal Detection For Free Flight, Jake T. Tallman
Master's Theses
Thermals are regions of rising hot air formed on the ground through the warming of the surface by the sun. Thermals are commonly used by birds and glider pilots to extend flight duration, increase cross-country distance, and conserve energy. This kind of powerless flight using natural sources of lift is called soaring. Once a thermal is encountered, the pilot flies in circles to keep within the thermal, so gaining altitude before flying off to the next thermal and towards the destination. A single thermal can net a pilot thousands of feet of elevation gain, however estimating thermal locations is not …
Global Mhd And Acoustic Solar Modeling And Helioseismic Analysis, Andrey M. Stejko
Global Mhd And Acoustic Solar Modeling And Helioseismic Analysis, Andrey M. Stejko
Dissertations
Computational fluid dynamic simulations have become one of the most prolific avenues of study in the fields of solar and stellar physics within the last several decades. With the advent of ever increasing computing power, high-definition global models of the Sun have become indispensable in understanding the complex and chaotic nature of flows in the solar interior, as well as their impact on the evolution of the global solar dynamo. The mechanisms that connect the generation of the toroidal magnetic field at the base of the convection zone to the emergence of a poloidal field onto the solar surface can …
An Examination Of Fontan Circulation Using Differential Equation Models And Numerical Methods, Vanessa Maybruck
An Examination Of Fontan Circulation Using Differential Equation Models And Numerical Methods, Vanessa Maybruck
Honors Student Research
Certain congenital heart defects can lead to the development of only a single pumping chamber, or ventricle, in the heart instead of the usual two ventricles. Individuals with this defect undergo a corrective, three-part surgery, the third step of which is the Fontan procedure, but as the patients age, their cardiovascular health will likely deteriorate. Using computational fluid dynamics and differential equations, Fontan circulation can be modeled to investigate why the procedure fails and how Fontan failure can be maximally prevented. Borrowing from well-established literature on RC circuits, the differential equation models simulate systemic blood flow in a piecewise, switch-like …
Investigation Of Two-Phase Flow Phenomena In Rotating Paper Dryer To Achieve Effective Heat Transfer With Low Energy Consumption, Hamed Abdul Majeed
Investigation Of Two-Phase Flow Phenomena In Rotating Paper Dryer To Achieve Effective Heat Transfer With Low Energy Consumption, Hamed Abdul Majeed
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The paper industry provides important consumer products comprised of paper, tissue, paper board, and pulping. The papermaking process requires a lot of energy, in the form of steam, to dry the paper web in rotating dryers. As steam condenses inside the dryers by releasing heat to the dryer walls, the condensate is removed using either stationary or rotary siphons. Since the condensate is usually at a saturated state, part of the condensate flashes into vapor during the extraction process and becomes difficult to extract. Thus, additional blow-through steam is used to push the condensate out. Since this blow-through steam is …
Characterization Of Landslide Processes From Radar Remote Sensing And Hydromechanical Modeling, Yuankun Xu
Characterization Of Landslide Processes From Radar Remote Sensing And Hydromechanical Modeling, Yuankun Xu
Earth Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Landsides are a natural geomorphic process yet a dangerous hazard which annually causes thousands of casualties and billions of property loss in a global scale. Understanding landslide motion kinematics from early initiation to final deposition is critical for monitoring, assessing, and forecasting landslide movement in order to mitigate their hazards. Landslides occur under diverse environmental settings and appear in variable types; however, all types of landslides can be mechanically attributed to shearing failure at the basal surface due to stress regime shift contributed by internal and/or external forcing. Typical internal factors include soil/rock weathering, whereas typical external triggering forces encompass …
Virtual Prototyping Of Liquid Lithium Divertor Concepts, Brennan Arnold
Virtual Prototyping Of Liquid Lithium Divertor Concepts, Brennan Arnold
Macalester Journal of Physics and Astronomy
A tokamak divertor must withstand power deposition in excess of 10 MW/m^2 in steady state and much higher in disruptions, enough to destroy nearly any material. In order to handle this extreme heat, there is some interest in using liquid metal flows to continually renew the divertor surface. In this paper, we examine an idea for a divertor with a porous surface that allows liquid lithium flowing through the divertor to percolate to the plasma facing surface. This idea is complicated by magnetohydrodynamic drag, where the stong magnetic fields in the tokamak cause the lithium to flow too slowly to …
Design And Control Of A Peristaltic Pump To Simulate Left Atrial Pressure In A Conductive Silicone Model, Jeremy Collins
Design And Control Of A Peristaltic Pump To Simulate Left Atrial Pressure In A Conductive Silicone Model, Jeremy Collins
Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
According to the CDC, atrial fibrillation is responsible for more than 454,000 hospitalizations and approximately 158,000 deaths per year. A common treatment for atrial fibrillation is catheter ablation, a process in which a long flexible tube is guided through the femoral artery and to the source of arrhythmia in the heart, where it measures the electrical potential at various locations and converts problematic heart tissue to scar tissue via ablation. This paper details the design and control of a low-cost ($400) peristaltic pump system using repetitive control to replicate blood pressure in the left atrium in a conductive silicone model …
Complex Fluid Dynamics: Chemo-Hydrodynamics Driven By Autocatalytic Reaction Fronts, Matthew Walter Eskew
Complex Fluid Dynamics: Chemo-Hydrodynamics Driven By Autocatalytic Reaction Fronts, Matthew Walter Eskew
Dissertations and Theses
Chemo-hydrodynamics generated from reaction-diffusion-convection processes of autocatalytic chemical systems are extensively studied for their applications in modeling complex systems. Compared to the more extensively studied autocatalytic systems, chlorite-tetrathionate and chlorite-trithionate, the chlorite-thiourea systems is relatively unexplored. Compared to the two previous systems, chlorite-thiourea has more straightforward chemical kinetics. To narrow the gap between chlorite-thiourea and the other systems a combination of experimental study and numerical simulation were employed to quantify this system.
Compared to established literature, experiments were performed at five orders of magnitude lower concentration of indicator, minimizing confounding effects of indicator on hydrodynamic motion. To accurately image the …
Superfluid Swimmers, German Kolmakov, Igor S. Aranson
Superfluid Swimmers, German Kolmakov, Igor S. Aranson
Publications and Research
The propulsion of living microorganisms ultimately relies on viscous drag for body-fluid interactions. The self-locomotion in superfluids such as 4He is deemed impossible due to the apparent lack of viscous resistance. Here, we investigate the self-propulsion of a Janus (two-face) light-absorbing particle suspended in superfluid helium 4He (He-II). The particle is energized by the heat flux due to the absorption of light from an external source. We show that a quantum mechanical propulsion force originates due to the transformation of the superfluid to a normal fluid on the heated particle face. The theoretical analysis is supported by the …

Frozen In Time: A Numerical Modeling Approach To The Study Of Ice Bearing Planetesimals Through Carbonaceous Chondrites, Jasmine M. Bayron
Frozen In Time: A Numerical Modeling Approach To The Study Of Ice Bearing Planetesimals Through Carbonaceous Chondrites, Jasmine M. Bayron
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Icy planetesimals are significant objects of study for meteoritics, planetary science, and astrobiology due to their connections to the origins of life and liquid water on Earth. An existing closed system aqueous alteration model was adapted to simulate several scenarios involving early Solar System geologic processes occurring in an icy planetesimal interior. The model described in this work has been developed not only to test the validity of constraints currently thought to apply to CM1 parent bodies, but to directly compare the implications of these constraints for the isotopic composition and the modal mineralogy of carbonaceous chondrites. Isotopic ratios of …

Numerical Reconstruction Of Spalled Particle Trajectories In An Arc-Jet Environment, Raghava S. C. Davuluri, Sean C. C. Bailey, Kaveh A. Tagavi, Alexandre Martin
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
To evaluate the effects of spallation on ablative material, it is necessary to evaluate the mass loss. To do so, a Lagrangian particle trajectory code is used to reconstruct trajectories that match the experimental data for all kinematic parameters. The results from spallation experiments conducted at the NASA HYMETS facility over a wedge sample were used. A data-driven adaptive methodology was used to adapts the ejection parameters until the numerical trajectory matches the experimental data. The preliminary reconstruction results show that the size of the particles seemed to be correlated with the location of the ejection event. The size of …

Electroosmotic Mixing Of Non-Newtonian Fluid In A Microchannel With Obstacles And Zeta Potential Heterogeneity, Lanju Mei, Defu Cui, Jiayue Shen, Diganta Dutta, Willie Brown, Lei Zhang, Ibibia K. Dabipi
Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper investigates the electroosmotic micromixing of non-Newtonian fluid in a microchannel with wall-mounted obstacles and surface potential heterogeneity on the obstacle surface. In the numerical simulation, the full model consisting of the Navier–Stokes equations and the Poisson–Nernst–Plank equations are solved for the electroosmotic fluid field, ion transport, and electric field, and the power law model is used to characterize the rheological behavior of the aqueous solution. The mixing performance is investigated under different parameters, such as electric double layer thickness, flow behavior index, obstacle surface zeta potential, obstacle dimension. Due to the zeta potential heterogeneity at the obstacle surface, …

Optimisation Of Retrofit Wall Insulation: An Irish Case Study, Rakshit D. Muddu, D M. Gowda, Anthony James Robinson, Aimee Byrne
Articles
Ireland has one of the highest rates of emissions per capita in the world and its residential sector is responsible for approximately 10% of total national CO2 emissions. Therefore, reducing the CO2 emissions in this sector will play a decisive role in achieving EU targets of reducing emissions by 40% by 2030. To better inform decisions regarding retrofit of the existing building stock, this study proposes Optimum Insulation Thicknesses (OIT) for typical walls in 25 regions in Ireland. The calculation of OIT includes annual heat energy expenditure, CO2 emissions, and material payback period. The approach taken is based on Heating …
Compressible Hydrodynamics Of Few Body Optical Vortices, Jasmine M. Andersen
Compressible Hydrodynamics Of Few Body Optical Vortices, Jasmine M. Andersen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The ubiquity of vortices nearly rivals that of the innumerable fluids and spaces in which they live. Not only do they exist in systems such as superfluids, superconductors, optical fields, or cold atomic gases, for example, but they also exist in our atmospheres, oceans, and even in our veins. This makes understanding and accurately predicting the dynamics of vortices in various systems a relevant and meaningful endeavor.
From a typical hydrodynamic perspective, vortices move within a given fluid because of the background fluid density and phase gradients at the vortex location. However, we find that these gradients alone are insufficient …

In this work we consider the problem of finding the simplest arrangement of resonant deep water gravity waves in one-dimensional propagation, from three perspectives: Theoretical, numerical and experimental. Theoretically this requires using a normal-form Hamiltonian that focuses on 5-wave resonances. The simplest arrangement is based on a triad of wave vectors K1 + K2 = K3 (satisfying specific ratios) along with their negatives, corresponding to a scenario of encountering wave packets, amenable to experiments and numerical simulations. The normal-form equations for these encountering waves in resonance are shown to be non-integrable, but they admit an integrable reduction …

Multiscale Investigation Of Dropwise Condensation On A Smooth Hydrophilic Surface, Shahab Bayani Ahangar
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The objective of this work is to identify the fundamental mechanism of dropwise condensation on a smooth solid surface by probing the solid-vapor interface during phase-change to evaluate the existence and structure of the thin film and the initial nucleus that develop during condensation. In this work, an automated Surface Plasmon Resonance imaging (SPRi) instrument with the ability to perform imaging in intensity modulation and angular modulation is developed. The SPRi instrument is used to probe (in three dimensions) the adsorbed film that forms on the substrate during dropwise condensation. SPRi with a lateral resolution of ~ 4-10 μm, thickness …
Fluid-Wall Interactions In Pseudopotential Lattice Boltzmann Models, Cheng Peng, Luis F. Ayala, Orlando M. Ayala
Fluid-Wall Interactions In Pseudopotential Lattice Boltzmann Models, Cheng Peng, Luis F. Ayala, Orlando M. Ayala
Engineering Technology Faculty Publications
Designing proper fluid-wall interaction forces to achieve proper wetting conditions is an important area of interest in pseudopotential lattice Boltzmann models. In this paper, we propose a modified fluid-wall interaction force that applies for pseudopotential models of both single-component fluids and partially miscible multicomponent fluids, such as hydrocarbon mixtures. A reliable correlation that predicts the resulting liquid contact angle on a flat solid surface is also proposed. This correlation works well over a wide variety of pseudopotential lattice Boltzmann models and thermodynamic conditions.

Improving The Temporal Accuracy Of Turbulence Models And Resolving The Implementation Issues Of Fluid Flow Modeling, Kyle J. Schwiebert
Improving The Temporal Accuracy Of Turbulence Models And Resolving The Implementation Issues Of Fluid Flow Modeling, Kyle J. Schwiebert
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
A sizeable proportion of the work in this thesis focuses on a new turbulence model, dubbed ADC (the approximate deconvolution model with defect correction). The ADC is improved upon using spectral deferred correction, a means of constructing a higher order ODE solver. Since both the ADC and SDC are based on a predictor-corrector approach, SDC is incorporated with essentially no additional computational cost. We will show theoretically and using numerical tests that the new scheme is indeed higher order in time than the original, and that the benefits of defect correction, on which the ADC is based, are preserved.

On The Improvements Of Boundary-Layer Representation For High Resolution Weather Forecasting In Costal-Urban Environments, David Melecio-Vazquez
On The Improvements Of Boundary-Layer Representation For High Resolution Weather Forecasting In Costal-Urban Environments, David Melecio-Vazquez
Dissertations and Theses
As large urban centers around the world become more densely populated, the global conversion from natural to man-made land surfaces will only increase. These land-use changes affect the urban surface energy budget which in turn changes the structure of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) above. With current high-performance computing systems, meteorological and built environment information can be better utilized to quantify the anthropogenic effects of these modifications. Although these systems have improved forecasting near-surface weather conditions, a comprehensive approach to represent urban impacts on the PBL is still limited. Improved PBL representation can lead to better weather and climate forecasts, …
Numerical Simulations Of Capsule Deformation Using A Dual Time-Stepping Lattice Boltzmann Method, Charles Armstrong, Yan Peng
Numerical Simulations Of Capsule Deformation Using A Dual Time-Stepping Lattice Boltzmann Method, Charles Armstrong, Yan Peng
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
In this work a quasisteady, dual time-stepping lattice Boltzmann method is proposed for simulation of capsule deformation. At each time step the steady-state lattice Boltzmann equation is solved using the full approximation storage multigrid scheme for nonlinear equations. The capsule membrane is modeled as an infinitely thin shell suspended in an ambient fluid domain with the fluid structure interaction computed using the immersed boundary method. A finite element method is used to compute the elastic forces exerted by the capsule membrane. Results for a wide range of parameters and initial configurations are presented. The proposed method is found to reduce …
Electroosmotic Flow Of Viscoelastic Fluid Through A Constriction Microchannel, Jianyu Ji, Shizhi Qian, Zhaohui Liu
Electroosmotic Flow Of Viscoelastic Fluid Through A Constriction Microchannel, Jianyu Ji, Shizhi Qian, Zhaohui Liu
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
Electroosmotic flow (EOF) has been widely used in various biochemical microfluidic applications, many of which use viscoelastic non-Newtonian fluid. This study numerically investigates the EOF of viscoelastic fluid through a 10:1 constriction microfluidic channel connecting two reservoirs on either side. The flow is modelled by the Oldroyd-B (OB) model coupled with the Poisson–Boltzmann model. EOF of polyacrylamide (PAA) solution is studied as a function of the PAA concentration and the applied electric field. In contrast to steady EOF of Newtonian fluid, the EOF of PAA solution becomes unstable when the applied electric field (PAA concentration) exceeds a critical value for …
Modeling And Numerical Simulations Of The Michigan Tech Convection Cloud Chamber, Subin Thomas
Modeling And Numerical Simulations Of The Michigan Tech Convection Cloud Chamber, Subin Thomas
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Understanding atmospheric clouds is essential for human progress, ranging from short-term effects such as when and how much it rains to long-term effects such as how much temperatures would rise due to global climate change. Clouds vary globally and seasonally; also they have length scales ranging from a few nanometers to a few kilometers and timescales from a few nanoseconds to a few weeks. Knowledge gaps in aerosol-cloud-turbulence interactions and a lack of sufficient resolution in observations pose a challenge in understanding cloud systems.
Experimental facilities like the Michigan Tech Cloud Chamber can provide a suitable platform for studying aerosol-cloud …

Nebulizer-Based Systems To Improve Pharmaceutical Aerosol Delivery To The Lungs, Benjamin M. Spence
Theses and Dissertations
Combining vibrating mesh nebulizers with additional new technologies leads to substantial improvements in pharmaceutical aerosol delivery to the lungs across therapeutic administration methods. In this dissertation, streamlined components, aerosol administration synchronization, and/or Excipient Enhanced Growth (EEG) technologies were utilized to develop and test several novel devices and aerosol delivery systems. The first focus of this work was to improve the poor delivery efficiency, e.g., 3.6% of nominal dose (Dugernier et al. 2017), of aerosolized medication administration to adult human subjects concurrent with high flow nasal cannula (HFNC) therapy, a form of continuous-flow non-invasive ventilation (NIV). The developed Low-Volume Mixer-Heater (LVMH) …
Epitaxial Growth Of Semi-Polar (11-22) Gallium Nitride For Uv Photosensing Application, Abdullah Haaziq Ahmad Makinudin
Epitaxial Growth Of Semi-Polar (11-22) Gallium Nitride For Uv Photosensing Application, Abdullah Haaziq Ahmad Makinudin
Student Works (2020-2029)
Semi-polar (11-22) gallium nitride (GaN) epilayers have attracted numerous interests in GaN based technology as it possess significant advantages over its polar (c-plane) counterparts such as low to none spontaneous and piezoelectric polarization which is known to impair the device performance. However, growth along semi-polar (11-22) orientation has been known to exhibit numerous defect densities such as dislocations and stacking faults (SFs). In order to acquire high quality semi-polar (11-22) GaN epilayers, various growth optimizations must be employed. In this work, the semi-polar (11-22) GaN epilayers were grown on planar m-plane sapphire substrate with the use of a 2-inch capability …
Modeling Fluid Phenomena In The Context Of The Constrained Vapor Bubble System, James Barrett
Modeling Fluid Phenomena In The Context Of The Constrained Vapor Bubble System, James Barrett
Mathematics Theses and Dissertations
This thesis focuses on the fluid phenomena observed within what is known as the constrained vapor bubble system. The constrained vapor bubble system is a closed system consisting of a quartz cuvette partially filled with liquid and used as a coolant device. Heat is applied to the heater end which causes the liquid to evaporate and condense on the cooled end of the cuvette. Liquid travels back to the heated end via capillary flow in the corners. A pure vapor bubble is formed in the center of the cuvette giving rise to the name of the experiment. The constrained vapor …
Modeling Residence Time Distribution Of Chromatographic Perfusion Resin For Large Biopharmaceutical Molecules: A Computational Fluid Dynamic Study, Kevin Vehar
KGI Theses and Dissertations
The need for production processes of large biotherapeutic particles, such as virus-based particles and extracellular vesicles, has risen due to increased demand in the development of vaccinations, gene therapies, and cancer treatments. Liquid chromatography plays a significant role in the purification process and is routinely used with therapeutic protein production. However, performance with larger macromolecules is often inconsistent, and parameter estimation for process development can be extremely time- and resource-intensive. This thesis aimed to utilize advances in computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling to generate a first-principle model of the chromatographic process while minimizing model parameter estimation's physical resource demand. Specifically, …
Thermo-Fluid Characterizations Of The Powder-Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing Processes Using Laser And Electron Beam, M Shafiqur Rahman
Thermo-Fluid Characterizations Of The Powder-Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing Processes Using Laser And Electron Beam, M Shafiqur Rahman
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The powder-bed fusion (PBF) process is a subdivision of Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology where a heat source at a controlled speed selectively fuses regions of a powder-bed material to form three-dimensional (3-D) parts. Two of the most effective PBF processes are selective laser melting (SLM) and electron beam additive manufacturing (EBAM), which can fabricate full-density metallic parts in a layer-by-layer fashion. In this study, thermal behavior and melt-pool dynamics in the PBF process are investigated by developing 3-D multiphysics-based thermo-fluid models for both SLM and EBAM, containing Ti-6Al-4V alloy as a powder-bed material. The laser and electron beams are modeled …
