Fabrication And Investigation Of Microfluidic Devices That Produce Non-Linear Chemical Gradients, Elijah L. Waters
Fabrication And Investigation Of Microfluidic Devices That Produce Non-Linear Chemical Gradients, Elijah L. Waters
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Investigation of cell chemotaxis requires controlled chemical gradients. We investigated microfluidic devices that could enhance small populations' cell assays because of their ability to generate various chemical gradients. Our five designs generate different chemical concentration landscapes that we can easily convert into tools to study cell response to growth factors. Gradient landscapes occurred by splitting and mixing two input fluid concentrations using bifurcations, trifurcations, and Y-mixing junctions in three consecutive steps. Such fluid flow manipulations resulted in nine concentration streams entering a 0.54-mm-wide gradient chamber. The first design used a 1:1 ratio Y-mixer (unbiased) when blending two concentrations, resulting in …

This paper expands the authors’ prior work[1], which focuses on developing a convolutional neural network (CNN) model capable of mapping time-averaged, unsteady Reynold’s-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) simulations to higher resolution results informed by time-averaged detached eddy simulations (DES). The authors present improvements over the prior CNN autoencoder model that result from hyperparameter optimization, increased data set augmentation through the adoption of a patch-wise training approach, and the predictions of primitive variables rather than vorticity magnitude. The training of the CNN model developed in this study uses the same URANS and DES simulations of a transonic flow around several NACA 4-digit airfoils …

Stratospheric Glider Measurements Of Atmospheric Parameters, Anisa Haghighi
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
In June 2021 a series of high altitude flights were conducted in Spaceport America, NM, using a balloon launched Uncrewed Aircraft System (UAS) to assess its capability to conduct measurements of various atmospheric properties and study turbulence in the troposphere and lower stratosphere. This UAS descends using an automated flight trajectory. The instruments aboard included a NASA-developed infrasonic microphone to evaluate its remote turbulence detection capabilities and a five-hole probe capable of measuring the in situ wind vector. Also on board were temperature, humidity and wind profile sensors. This document focuses on the atmospheric properties measured at high altitudes, the …
Impact Of Spallation And Internal Radiation On Fibrous Ablative Materials, Raghava Sai Chaitanya Davuluri
Impact Of Spallation And Internal Radiation On Fibrous Ablative Materials, Raghava Sai Chaitanya Davuluri
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Space vehicles are equipped with Thermal Protection Systems (TPS) that encounter high heat rates and protect the payload while entering a planetary atmosphere. For most missions that interest NASA, ablative materials are used as TPS. These materials undergo several mass and energy transfer mechanisms to absorb intense heat. The size and construction of the TPS are based on the composition of the planetary atmosphere and the impact of various ablative mechanisms on the flow field and the material. Therefore, it is essential to quantify the rates of different ablative phenomena to model TPS accurately. In this work, the impact of …
The Lagrangian Formulation For Wave Motion With A Shear Current And Surface Tension, Conor Curtin, Rossen Ivanov
The Lagrangian Formulation For Wave Motion With A Shear Current And Surface Tension, Conor Curtin, Rossen Ivanov
Articles
The Lagrangian formulation for the irrotational wave motion is straightforward and follows from a Lagrangian functional which is the difference between the kinetic and the potential energy of the system. In the case of fluid with constant vorticity, which arises for example when a shear current is present, the separation of the energy into kinetic and potential is not at all obvious and neither is the Lagrangian formulation of the problem. Nevertheless, we use the known Hamiltonian formulation of the problem in this case to obtain the Lagrangian density function, and utilising the Euler-Lagrange equations we proceed to derive some …

The Computational Model Of Nanofluid Considering Heat Transfer And Entropy Generation Across A Curved And Fat Surface, Sayer Obaid Alharbi, Florentin Smarandache, Awatif M.A. Elsiddieg, Aisha M. Alqahtani, M. Riaz Khan, V. Puneeth, Nidhal Becheikh
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
The entropy generation analysis for the nanofluid flowing over a stretching/shrinking curved region is performed in the existence of the cross-diffusion effect. The surface is also subjected to second-order velocity slip under the effect of mixed convection. The Joule heating that contributes significantly to the heat transfer properties of nanofluid is incorporated along with the heat source/sink. Furthermore, the flow is assumed to be governed by an exterior magnetic field that aids in gaining control over the flow speed. With these frameworks, the mathematical model that describes the flow with such characteristics and assumptions is framed using partial differential equations …

The Fluid Margin Between Physical Causal Closure And Non-Physical Causal Closure, Extended To The Neutrosophic Causal Closure Principle, Florentin Smarandache
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
We plead for a fluid margin, or mixed/indeterminate buffer zone, between Physical and Non-Physical Causal Closures, and for a Neutrosophic Causal Closure Principle claiming that the chances of all physical effects are determined by their prior partially physical and partially non-physical causes.
An Exploration Of Cloud Droplet Growth By Condensation And Collision-Coalescence In A Convection-Cloud Chamber, Jacob T. Kuntzleman
An Exploration Of Cloud Droplet Growth By Condensation And Collision-Coalescence In A Convection-Cloud Chamber, Jacob T. Kuntzleman
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Atmospheric clouds are crucial to weather and climate, and the rate at which droplets collide and coalesce to form precipitation is one of the fundamental controlling processes. The convection-cloud chamber allows the interactions between aerosols and cloud droplets produced by condensation to be investigated within a turbulent environment. Studying the full range of microphysical conditions in atmospheric clouds is not possible, however, unless conditions for droplet growth by collision and coalescence are also achieved. In this study, we explore the conditions favorable to collision-coalescence growth in convection-cloud chambers, extending previous work on steady-state droplet size distributions due to condensation alone. …
On The Gaussian-Core Vortex Lattice Model For The Analysis Of Wind Farm Flow Dynamics, Apurva Baruah
On The Gaussian-Core Vortex Lattice Model For The Analysis Of Wind Farm Flow Dynamics, Apurva Baruah
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Wind power science has seen tremendous development and growth over the last 40 years. Advancements in design, manufacturing, installation, and operation of wind turbines have enabled the commercial deployment of wind power generation systems. These have been due, in a large part, to the expertise in the simulation and modeling of individual wind turbines. The new generation of wind energy systems calls for a need to accurately predict and model the entire wind farm, and not just individual turbines. The commercial deployment of these wind farms depends on model's ability to accurately capture the different physics involved, each at its …
Piv Measurements Of Open-Channel Turbulent Flow Under Unconstrained Conditions, James K. Arthur
Piv Measurements Of Open-Channel Turbulent Flow Under Unconstrained Conditions, James K. Arthur
Faculty Journal Articles
Many open-channel turbulent flow studies have been focused on highly constrained conditions. Thus, it is rather conventional to note such flows as being fully developed, fully turbulent, and unaffected by sidewalls and free surface disturbances. However, many real-life flow phenomena in natural water bodies and artificially installed drain channels are not as ideal. This work is aimed at studying some of these unconstrained conditions. This is achieved by using particle image velocimetry measurements of a developing turbulent open-channel flow over a smooth wall. The tested flow effects are low values of the Reynolds number based on the momentum thickness Re …
Innovations In Drop Shape Analysis Using Deep Learning And Solving The Young-Laplace Equation For An Axisymmetric Pendant Drop, Andres P. Hyer
Innovations In Drop Shape Analysis Using Deep Learning And Solving The Young-Laplace Equation For An Axisymmetric Pendant Drop, Andres P. Hyer
Theses and Dissertations
Axisymmetric Drop Shape Analysis (ADSA) is a technique commonly used to determine surface or interfacial tension. Applications of traditional ASDA methods to process analytical technologies are limited by computational speed and image quality. Here, we address these limitations using a novel machine learning approach to analysis. With a convolutional neural network (CNN), we were able to achieve an experimental fit precision of (+/-) 0.122 mN/m in predicting the surface tension of drop images at a rate of 1.5 ms^-1 versus 7.7 s^-1, which is more than 5,000 times faster than the traditional method. The results are validated on real images …
Thermal Analysis Of Thermal Shield For Pip-Ii Ssr1 Cryomodule, Victor Aguado Rodriguez
Thermal Analysis Of Thermal Shield For Pip-Ii Ssr1 Cryomodule, Victor Aguado Rodriguez
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Fermilab's PIP-II project plans to enhance the onsite accelerator into the world's most intense neutrino beam, bringing Fermilab into the next generation of particle accelerators. The five different types of cryomodules are vital parts of the PIP-II project and each requires numerous engineering analyses to prove operation. For example, the thermal shield of the Single Spoke Resonator-1 (SSR1) cryomodule required a thermal analysis to ensure the design was operating as intended before fabrication commenced. The thermal shield is cooled by the supercritical helium inside of the extrusion and must remain between 45 and 80 Kelvin. The main purpose of the …

Long-Range Aceo Phenomena In Microfluidic Channel, Diganta Dutta, Keifer Smith, Xavier Palmer
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Microfluidic devices are increasingly utilized in numerous industries, including that of medicine, for their abilities to pump and mix fluid at a microscale. Within these devices, microchannels paired with microelectrodes enable the mixing and transportation of ionized fluid. The ionization process charges the microchannel and manipulates the fluid with an electric field. Although complex in operation at the microscale, microchannels within microfluidic devices are easy to produce and economical. This paper uses simulations to convey helpful insights into the analysis of electrokinetic microfluidic device phenomena. The simulations in this paper use the Navier–Stokes and Poisson Nernst–Planck equations solved using COMSOL …

The design of an inward-turning, high-speed, three-dimensional streamline traced intake is presented from osculating axisymmetric theory. To satisfy the osculating intake design criteria, a stitched Busemann diffuser and Internal Conical Flow-A solution is used as the basic isentropic compressive streamline. This new contour provides efficient compression, high flow uniformity, and straight leading edge shocks of equal strength. Additionally, a novel method for constructing the inlet cowl is presented. The combined process leads to a new method of high-speed intake design. A generic shape-transitioned intake is constructed and named the Indiana Inlet for the Indiana universities that contributed to the project. …

Finite Element Modeling And Analysis Of Breech Face Impressions, James A. Hamilton
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Finite element analysis (FEA) is a technique which has not been widely used in Forensic Science in general and firearms examination in particular. The general utility of FEA was assessed by the simulation of scenarios commonly encountered during the investigation of firearm related crimes. As a test, simulations included the perforation of a windshield and sheet metal with a 9 mm projectile, the development of pseudo subclass characteristics during the manufacturing of a breech face, and the impact of a projectile with another projectile in air and with a solid body. Results from the simulations were compared to projectiles and …
Hydrodynamic Investigation Of The Discharge Of Complex Fluids From Dispensing Bottles Using Experimental And Computational Approaches, Baran Teoman
Dissertations
The discharge of non-Newtonian, complex fluids through orifices of industrial tanks, pipes, dispensers, or packaging containers is a ubiquitous but often problematic process because of the complex rheology of such fluids and the geometry of the containers. This, in turn, reduces the discharge rate and results in residual fluid left in the container, often referred to as heel. Heel formation is undesired in general, since it causes loss of valuable material, container fouling, and cross-contamination between batches. Heel may be of significant concern not only in industrial vessels but also in consumer packaging. Despite its relevance, the research in this …

Dynamic Rbi With Central Difference Method Approach In Calculation Of Uniform Corrosion Rate: A Casestudy On Gas Pipelines, M.Riefqi Dwi Alviansyah, Fernanda Hartoyo, Zahra Nadia Nurullia, Ari Kurniawan
Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings
The oil and gas industry generally uses a piping system to drain fluids. Even though the pipes used have been well designed, the use of pipes as a means of fluid transportation still provides the possibility of failure that can occur at any time, one of which is due to uniform corrosion. The use of standard Risk Based Inspection (RBI) according to the API RBI 581 document has been widely used to anticipate potential failures to pipe components. The use of standard RBI can reduce the risk of failure significantly. Because the standard RBI considers the component risk value to …

(R1978) Heated Laminar Vertical Jet Of Psudoplastic Fluids-Against Gravity, Manisha Patel, M. G. Timol
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
A heated laminar jet of Pseudo-plastic fluid flowing vertically upwards from a long narrow slit into a region of the same fluid which is at a rest and at a uniform temperature is considered. The governing non-linear Partial differential equations (PDEs) for the defined flow problem are transformed into non-linear ordinary differential equations using the effective similarity technique-one parameter deductive group theory method. The obtained non-linear coupled Ordinary differential equations are solved and the results are presented by graphs. The effect of the Prandtl number and Grashof number on the velocity and temperature of the jet flow is discussed. Also, …
Numerical Simulation Of Electroosmotic Flow Of Viscoelastic Fluid In Microchannel, Jianyu Ji
Numerical Simulation Of Electroosmotic Flow Of Viscoelastic Fluid In Microchannel, Jianyu Ji
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Electroosmotic flow (EOF) has been widely used in various biochemical microfluidic applications, many of which often involve the use of viscoelastic non-Newtonian fluids. Due to the existence of the elastic effect, the viscoelastic EOF develops into chaotic flow under extremely low Reynolds numbers, which is known as elastic turbulence. The mechanism of elastic turbulence in electroosmotic flow remains unclear. Numerical simulation plays an important role in understanding the mechanisms of elastic turbulence. This dissertation is aimed to study the EOF of viscoelastic fluids in constriction microchannels under various direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) electric fields. First, the EOF …

The mathematical description of the states of a fluid is based on the study of three fields defined on the domain occupied by the fluid: the velocity field V, the density ρ, and the pressure field P. These three “unknowns” are determined by integrating other five scalar equations, namely the mass conservation (continuity equation), the three components of the equation of momentum balance (Euler or Navier–Stokes), and the energy balance. This last equation needs in addition information about the thermodynamics of the fluid, so it may need to be supplied with some equation of state. In addition to these five …

The goal of this chapter is to discuss the general frame of hydrodynamics, like particle trajectories (path lines), streamlines, streak lines, free surfaces, and fluid surfaces, and to compare their behavior in the Eulerian and Lagrangian frames. The following sections and chapters proceed on the assumption that the fluid is practically continuous and homogeneous in structure. Of course, the concept of continuum is an abstraction that does not take into account the molecular and nuclear structure of matter. In that, we assume that the properties of the fluid do not change if we consider smaller and smaller amounts of matter …

In this article, a Riga plate is exhibited with an electric magnetization actuator consisting of permanent magnets and electrodes assembled alternatively. This exhibition produces electromagnetic hydrodynamic phenomena over a fluid flow. A new study model is formed with the Sutterby nanofluid flow through the Riga plate, which is crucial to the structure of several industrial and entering advancements, including thermal nuclear reactors, flow metres and nuclear reactor design. This article addresses the entropy analysis of Sutterby nanofluid flow over the Riga plate. The Cattaneo–Christov heat and mass flux were used to examine the behaviour of heat and mass relaxation time. …

Stochastic Modeling Of Flows In Membrane Pore Networks, Binan Gu
Dissertations
Membrane filters provide immediate solutions to many urgent problems such as water purification, and effective remedies to pressing environmental concerns such as waste and air treatment. The ubiquity of applications gives rise to a significant amount of research in membrane material selection and structural design to optimize filter efficiency. As physical experiments tend to be costly, numerical simulation and analysis of fluid flow, foulant transport and geometric evolution due to foulant deposition in complex geometries become particularly relevant. In this dissertation, several mathematical modeling and analytical aspects of the industrial membrane filtration process are investigated. A first-principles mathematical model for …
Controlled Manipulation Of Droplets On Fibers: Fundamentals And Printing Applications, Yueming Sun
Controlled Manipulation Of Droplets On Fibers: Fundamentals And Printing Applications, Yueming Sun
All Dissertations
In this dissertation, the drop interactions with a single fiber is discussed under an application angle for the development on new Drop-on-Demand (DOD) printhead using a fiber-in-a-tube platform[1] to print highly viscous materials[2]. To control the drop formation and manipulation on fiber, one needs to know how the fiber wetting properties and the fiber diameter influence drop formation. And then, one needs to know the effects of fiber movement in the device on drop formation. These two questions constitute the main theme of this dissertation.
Before this study, it was accepted that the liquids could not form axisymmetric droplets if …

Implementation Of A Least Squares Method To A Navier-Stokes Solver, Jada P. Lytch, Taylor Boatwright, Ja'nya Breeden
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
The Navier-Stokes equations are used to model fluid flow. Examples include fluid structure interactions in the heart, climate and weather modeling, and flow simulations in computer gaming and entertainment. The equations date back to the 1800s, but research and development of numerical approximation algorithms continues to be an active area. To numerically solve the Navier-Stokes equations we implement a least squares finite element algorithm based on work by Roland Glowinski and colleagues. We use the deal.II academic library , the C++ language, and the Linux operating system to implement the solver. We investigate convergence rates and apply the least squares …
The Effect Of Surface Gas/Liquid Entrapment On Drag Reduction, Haosen Tan
The Effect Of Surface Gas/Liquid Entrapment On Drag Reduction, Haosen Tan
Mechanical Engineering Research Theses and Dissertations
Economic globalization has made today’s world more closely linked, where transportation (e.g. shipping, pipeline) has played an important role. Approximately over 60% (in air), 80% (underwater), and 100% (in pipeline) propulsive power is used to overcome surface drag, so reducing surface drag will have a substantial impact economically and environmentally.
To develop a surface that has lower drag, the intuitive idea is to convert no-slip boundary conditions to slip or partial slip ones. To achieve that, the most promising approach is to replace the solid-liquid boundaries completely or partially with gas-liquid or liquid-liquid boundaries, because the shear stress is much …
Turbulent Transport Of Dissolved Oxygen In Natural Channels, Alanna Bachtlin
Turbulent Transport Of Dissolved Oxygen In Natural Channels, Alanna Bachtlin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The transport and mixing of dissolved oxygen (DO) is important to replenish the oxygen depleted by natural processes; gas transfer in general has implications for ecosystem metabolism and greenhouse gas transfer. Currently, reaeration coefficients can be found through gas tracer methods, which estimates one-way gas transfer. For this project, a net oxygen consumption rate, , was developed using the similarity equations, which provides a value from DO and velocity profiles specific to a stream site. Additionally, three models to calculate friction velocity, which is required for oxygen consumption rate, were compared. Reynolds stresses, mathematically developed in the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Equations, …
