For many years the velocity of gravitation, or more properly, the velocity of propagation of gravitational potential, has been the subject of much theoretical discussion. The magnitude of this velocity according to proposed theories varies from the velocity of light to infinity. According to the theory of relativity, the velocity of gravitation should be equal to that of light, and the success which experimental tests of the theory have met justify this assumption. Waxes, chemically speaking, are a class of esters which consist of mono- or di-hidric alcohols united with the higher fatty acids. These waxes contain free fatty acids, free alcohols and hydrocarbons. A considerable quantity of free cerotic acid (C26H52O2) myricyl palmitate (C16H31O2. C31H63), and high melting point hydrocarbons are found in beeswax. The acids that occur in waxes appear to have an even number of carbon atoms. Paraffine, ceresine, and ozokerite are really not waxes at all according to the chemical conception. The latter two are esters of glycerine united with higher fatty acids.

Robert Goddard's entry for March 17, 1926, from a newly digitized scan of Goddard's 1926 diary. This entry covers the events of the previous day, March 16, in which he achieved the world's first liquid-fuel rocket launch. Goddard kept one diary for each year, from 1898 until his death in 1945.

This entry is included towards the back of the diary, in the 'Memoranda' section, in order to have the space to fit his recounting of the day. The diary was a daily one and only left a few lines for each day. The transcription is as follows:

A newly digitized scan of Robert Goddard's 1926 diary, the year he achieved the world's first liquid-fuel rocket launch. Goddard kept one diary for each year, from 1898 until his death in 1945. Transcriptions of key dates can be found in the section of The Papers of Robert H. Goddard titled '1925-1930: Liquid Propellant Rockets Fly'.

Although the determination of the strength of metals and alloys at ordinary temperatures is an everyday matter, very little work has been done to determine their strength and elasticity at very low temperatures. Mallock and Schaefer have investigated certain metals at the temperature of liquid air, and have deduced formulae to express the relation between elasticity and temperature, while Andrade has given an expression for the flow of metals under large constant stress. The diffraction and interference problems in sound are to a large extent those in light. However, in regard to a practical solution of problems, the analogy must not be carried too far. In light, in general, we deal with slits or circular openings, the dimensions of which are large in comparison with the wave lengths employed. On the other hand, in sound the openings thru which sound passes are sometimes large and sometimes small compared with the wave lengths. Many of the approximations made in the solution of problems in light cannot be made in sound.

An integral equation method is used to develop formulas for the alternating-current resistance and inductance of a system of parallel "go and return" circuits. It is shown how these formulas may be applied to single-layer coils. The formulas are applied to several coils in which the "skin effect" is quite pronounced. These coils are measured at several frequencies and the results compared with the computed values. The methods of measurements are explained and a discussion is given pertaining to the distribution of the effective resistance in a coil. The eddy current losses due to dead ends are measured and discussed. …

It was recognized rather early in the study of the phenomena of discharge of electricity through gases that the ordinary laws of conduction as found in solid and liquid conductors are not applicable to gases. It was shown by Zeleny and independently by Child that Ohm's law by no means represents the distribution of potential between electrodes in an ionized gas, but that the potential gradient is large in the vicinity of the electrodes, and not uniform throughout the space between them. The first quantitative investigation of absolute phase change was made by Quinckel in 1872. This was followed by that of Wernicke, Wiener, Glan, Hennig, Drude, Koenigsberger and Bender. All these investigations were confined to the visible spectrum except that of Koenigsberger and Bender, who, in addition, measured for a few substances the phase change in the infra-red. So far no measurements of this phenomenon have been made in the ultra-violet.

When light polarized at an angle of forty-five degrees to the lines of force is passed through certain dielectrics, between two parallel electrodes, they become double-refracting. The difference of phase, delta, between the two components of light at right angles and parallel to the lines of force, as represented by Kerr and verified by later investigators, is

The induction theory of magnetism, introduced by Faraday, is now looked upon by all physicists as correct. The older theory which assumes the existence of magnetic fluids covering the ends of the magnet is in some cases mathematically simpler, and is for this reason often made use of. This, however, is apt to breed confusion as to the true nature of the induction or polarization in any given case. The difficulty Tyndall experienced in accepting Faraday's views as to diamagnetism, is accounted for by the fact that he was thinking in terms of the fluid theory, while Faraday was considering …

Studying Properties Of Xenon Doped Argon And Developing Optical Simulation Techniques For The Legend Collaboration, A Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay Experiment, Neil Christopher Mcfadden Dr

Neutrinoless double beta decay is a hypothesized lepton-number-violating process in which two neutrons decay to two protons, producing two electrons but no electron antineutrinos. The LEGEND collaboration will search for this decay in 76Ge. To improve the argon active veto for LEGEND-1000, xenon doped argon was explored as an alternative active volume. Simulations using argon doped with 10 ppm xenon and pure liquid argon were used to predict the light yield from cosmic muons in a 100 liter cryogenic vessel. The simulations predicted that xenon doping would yield 1.83+/-0.02 more light, while an increase of 1.81+/-0.05 was measured. From …
