Microbial locomotion is well understood when cells use either a small number of flagella or a high density of cilia. However many microbes live in an intermediate regime where coordination strategies such as flagellar bundles and metachronal waves are not possible. The mechanisms by which such organisms coordinate the motion of their swimming appendages are not well understood. Here, we study the only known obligatory multicellular bacterium, which are of the genus Magnetoglobus. Cells of this genus live exclusively in spherical communities called consortia, which are composed of a monolayer of tens of cells. Approximately a thousand of flagella project …

Datasets For Response Of A Liquid Water Cloud To In Situ Hygroscopic Seeding, James Simmons

We have performed experiments in the Michigan Tech Pi Chamber to assess the response of a steady-state, liquid water cloud to in situ injection of a hygroscopic powder. Three materials were tested: jet-milled NaCl, a newly developed NaCl-TiO2 core-shell material, and Arizona test dust as a non-hygroscopic control. Injection of the hygroscopic materials resulted in an increase of the local liquid water content, stimulating formation of droplets up to 60 microns in diameter. Upon injection of the powders, the pre-existing cloud in the chamber collapsed.

A large convection cloud chamber has been proposed for exploring aerosol–cloud–drizzle interactions under well-controlled turbulent conditions. Recent theoretical and numerical studies suggest that a convection cloud chamber with two heated and two cooled sidewalls can significantly enhance the liquid water content and thus benefit drizzle initiation. However, a chamber with such a sidewall configuration develops stable stratification and extremely weak turbulence therein. In this study, we conduct large-eddy simulations of a tall convection chamber with five different sidewall configurations consisting of alternating warm and cold patches. Aerosol particles play a pivotal role in shaping clouds, precipitation, and climate. However, it still remains one of the significant uncertainties in climate change. While most aerosols are activated at the cloud base, the aerosol particles entrained from the cloud top or edges can also contribute to droplet formation above the base. This process might significantly impact cloud properties and lifetimes.

The physics of interacting baths is of interest in a variety of contexts, ranging from ultracold atoms to ionized gases. While many features can already be captured in a one-dimensional model, others are speci c to the situation of two or three-dimensional systems. In this paper, we focus on three-dimensional features of a model for thermalization between two baths that we have explored in earlier publications. In contrast to the one-dimensional situation we show that, enroute to thermalization, deviations from the Maxwell-Boltzmann energy distributions more akin to  -distributions are observed. Clouds, crucial for understanding climate, begin with droplet formation from aerosols, but observations of this fleeting activation step are lacking in the atmosphere. Here we use a time-gated time-correlated single-photon counting lidar to observe cloud base structures at decimeter scales. Results show that the air-cloud interface is not a perfect boundary but rather is a transition zone where transformation of aerosol particles into cloud droplets occurs. The observed distributions of first-arriving photons within the transition zone reflect vertical development of a cloud, including droplet activation and condensational growth. Carotenoids are a major component of the human diet and have been widely studied for their antioxidant, and vision protection roles in the human body, and dietary supplementation is promoted in particular for ocular health. An initial trial (European Nutrition in Glaucoma Management (ENIGMA)), which assessed macular pigment optical density (MPOD) as well as ocular structural, functional and perceptual parameters before and after the 18-month supplementation of glaucoma patients with macular pigment (MP) carotenoids (lutein, zeaxanthin, meso-zeaxanthin), confirmed supplementation significantly improved the clinical ocular health of participants. The effects of entrainment-mixing on the cloud droplet size distribution are examined in the Pi cloud chamber that creates a turbulent supersaturated environment for cloud formation. The experiments are conducted with a temperature-controlled flange to mimic the entrainment-mixing process. The entrainment zone is created at the center of the top surface of the chamber, allowing dry air of controlled temperature (Te) and flow rate (Qe) to flow into the mixing cloud region. This dissertation presents a Petrov/Plebanski/Segre/Algebraic (PPSA) classification scheme for both the curvature and torsion tensors in Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble theory (ECSK); additionally the work includes a software package in Maple with computational and PPSA classification tools. Six different solutions are classified using the new software tools developed. We also present a new boundary term for ECSK-NMC scalar theory to ensure Dirichlet boundary conditions. New work completed includes the decomposition of an arbitrary 4th rank tensor under SO (p, q), equivalent SL (2, C) irreducible spinor decompositions of arbitrary 3rd and 4th rank tensors. We report a new measurement of the beam-spin asymmetry, Σ, for the γn → K + Σ− reaction using quasi-free neutrons in a liquid-deuterium target. The new dataset includes data at previously unmeasured photon energy and angular ranges, thereby providing new constraints on partial wave analyses used to extract properties of the excited nucleon states. The experimental data were obtained using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS), housed in Hall B of the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). The structure dependent radiative K + → e+νγ (KSD+e2γ) decay was investigated with stopped positive kaons. The e+ momentum spectra containing 574±30 KSD+e2γ events with a K + → μ+ν (Kμ2) background of 28 ± 19 events were measured with and without a photon in coincidence and analyzed with Monte Carlo simulations for acceptance and detector response to extract the ratio of the branching ratio of the KSD+e2γ decay and the K + → e+ν decay including the internal bremsstrahlung process (Ke2(γ )). …

We present measurements of the electron helicity asymmetry in quasi-elastic proton knockout from 2H and 12C nuclei by polarized electrons. This asymmetry depends on the fifth structure function, is antisymmetric with respect to the scattering plane, and vanishes in the absence of final-state interactions, and thus it provides a sensitive tool for their study. Our kinematics cover the full range in off-coplanarity angle θpq, with a polar angle θpq coverage up to about 8. Carotenoids are naturally abundant fat-soluble pigmented compounds, with dietary, antioxidant and vision protection advantages. The dietary carotenoids, Beta Carotene, Lutein and Zeaxanthin, complexed with in bovine serum albumin (BSA) in aqueous solution, were explored using Raman spectroscopy to differentiate and quantify their spectral signatures. UV visible absorption spectroscopy was employed to confirm the linearity of responses over the concentration range employed (0.05-1mg/ml) and, of the 4 source wavelengths, 785nm, 660nm, 532nm, 473nm, 532nm was chosen to provide the optimal response. Short period planets tidally excite internal gravity modes within their host star. These excited modes, known collectively as the dynamical tide, dissipate orbital energy and cause the planet’s orbit to decay. In hot Jupiter systems, resonantly excited gmodes are driven to such large amplitudes in the stellar core that they nonlinearly excite a sea of secondary modes. These secondary modes can greatly enhance the efficiency of tidal dissipation compared to linear theory predictions and thus significantly increase the rate of orbital decay. In this thesis we calculate the three-mode coupling coefficients between the excited g-modes of hot Jupiter host stars. …

Achievements in theoretical studies and detection techniques have led to the discovery of 4,000+ exoplanets in ~3, 000 planetary systems to date. Despite this great success, and though candidates have been proposed, the confirmation of the first exomoon is yet to be accomplished.
