Wavelet Transform Of Fractional Integrals For Integrable Boehmians, Deshna Loonker, P. K. Banerji, S. L. Kalla Jun 2010

Wavelet Transform Of Fractional Integrals For Integrable Boehmians, Deshna Loonker, P. K. Banerji, S. L. Kalla

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The present paper deals with the wavelet transform of fractional integral operator (the Riemann- Liouville operators) on Boehmian spaces. By virtue of the existing relation between the wavelet transform and the Fourier transform, we obtained integrable Boehmians defined on the Boehmian space for the wavelet transform of fractional integrals.

Noncommutative Topology And The World’S Simplest Index Theorem, Erik Van Erp May 2010

Noncommutative Topology And The World’S Simplest Index Theorem, Erik Van Erp

Dartmouth Scholarship

In this article we outline an approach to index theory on the basis of methods of noncommutative topology. We start with an explicit index theorem for second-order differential operators on 3-manifolds that are Fredholm but not elliptic. This low-brow index formula is expressed in terms of winding numbers. We then proceed to show how it is derived as a special case of an index theorem for hypoelliptic operators on contact manifolds. Finally, we discuss the noncommutative topology that is employed in the proof of this theorem. The article is intended to illustrate that noncommutative topology can be a powerful tool …

Numerical Investigation Of Pre-Detonator Geometries For Pde Applications, Robert T. Fievisohn Mar 2010

Numerical Investigation Of Pre-Detonator Geometries For Pde Applications, Robert T. Fievisohn

Theses and Dissertations

A parametric study was performed to determine optimal geometries to allow the successful transition of a detonation from a pre-detonator into the thrust tube of a pulse detonation engine. The study was performed using a two-dimensional Euler solver with progress variables to model the chemistry. The geometrical configurations for the simulations look at the effect of shock reflections, flow obstructions, and detonation diffraction to determine successful geometries. It was observed that there are success and failure rates associated with pre-detonators. These success rates appear to be determined by the transverse wave structure of a stably propagating detonation wave and must …

Highway Hull Revisited, Greg Aloupis, Jean Cardinal, Sébastien Collette, Ferran Hurtado, Stefan Langerman, Joseph O'Rourke, Belén Palop Feb 2010

Highway Hull Revisited, Greg Aloupis, Jean Cardinal, Sébastien Collette, Ferran Hurtado, Stefan Langerman, Joseph O'Rourke, Belén Palop

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

A highway H is a line in the plane on which one can travel at a greater speed than in the remaining plane. One can choose to enter and exit H at any point. The highway time distance between a pair of points is the minimum time required to move from one point to the other, with optional use of H. The highway hull H(S,H) of a point set S is the minimal set containing S as well as the shortest paths between all pairs of points in H(S,H), using the highway time distance. We provide a Θ(nlogn) worst-case …

Ozsváth-Szabó And Rasmussen Invariants Of Cable Knots, Cornelia A. Van Cott Jan 2010

Ozsváth-Szabó And Rasmussen Invariants Of Cable Knots, Cornelia A. Van Cott

Mathematics

We study the behavior of the Ozsváth–Szabó and Rasmussen knot concordance invariants τ and s on Km,n, the (m,n)–cable of a knot K where m and n are relatively prime. We show that for every knot K and for any fixed positive integer m, both of the invariants evaluated on Km,n differ from their value on the torus knot Tm,n by fixed constants for all but finitely many n>0. Combining this result together with Hedden’s extensive work on the behavior of τ on (m,mr+1)–cables yields bounds on the value of τ on any (m,n)–cable of K. In addition, several …

Two-Player Envy-Free Multi-Cake Division, John Cloutier '03, Kathryn L. Nyman, Francis E. Su Jan 2010

Two-Player Envy-Free Multi-Cake Division, John Cloutier '03, Kathryn L. Nyman, Francis E. Su

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We introduce a generalized cake-cutting problem in which we seek to divide multiple cakes so that two players may get their most-preferred piece selections: a choice of one piece from each cake, allowing for the possibility of linked preferences over the cakes. For two players, we show that disjoint envy-free piece selections may not exist for two cakes cut into two pieces each, and they may not exist for three cakes cut into three pieces each. However, there do exist such divisions for two cakes cut into three pieces each, and for three cakes cut into four pieces each. The …

The Riesz Representation Theorem For Linear Functionals, Thomas Daniel Schellhous Jan 2010

The Riesz Representation Theorem For Linear Functionals, Thomas Daniel Schellhous

Theses Digitization Project

This study will investigate the Riesz representation theorem for linear functionals in relation to locally compact Hausdorff spaces. Two other theorems that are commonly called "Riesz representation theorem" are the theorem for finite-dimensional inner product spaces and the theorem for Hilbert spaces [BN00], and studying these interesting topics helps us to not only gain a better understanding of how linear functionals interact with vector spaces over which they are defined, but also to see faint threads that hint at a deep connection between the various fields of modern mathematics.

Hydraulic Geometry Relationships And Regional Curves For The Inner And Outer Bluegrass Regions Of Kentucky, Ruth Roseann Brockman Jan 2010

Hydraulic Geometry Relationships And Regional Curves For The Inner And Outer Bluegrass Regions Of Kentucky, Ruth Roseann Brockman

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Hydraulic geometry relationships and regional curves are used in natural channel design to assist engineers, biologists, and fluvial geomorphologists in the efforts undertaken to ameliorate previous activities that have diminished, impaired or destroyed the structure and function of stream systems. Bankfull channel characteristics were assessed for 14 United States Geological Survey (USGS) gaged sites in the Inner Bluegrass and 15 USGS gaged sites in the Outer Bluegrass Regions of Kentucky. Hydraulic geometry relationships and regional curves were developed for the aforementioned regions.

Analysis of the regression relationships showed that bankfull discharge is a good explanatory variable for bankfull parameters such …

Morphing Of Triangular Meshes In Shape Space, Stefanie Wuhrer, Prosenjit Bose, Chang Shu, Joseph O'Rourke, Alan Brunton Jan 2010

Morphing Of Triangular Meshes In Shape Space, Stefanie Wuhrer, Prosenjit Bose, Chang Shu, Joseph O'Rourke, Alan Brunton

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We present a novel approach to morph between two isometric poses of the same non-rigid object given as triangular meshes. We model the morphs as linear interpolations in a suitable shape space S. For triangulated 3D polygons, we prove that interpolating linearly in this shape space corresponds to the most isometric morph in R3 . We then extend this shape space to arbitrary triangulations in 3D using a heuristic approach and show the practical use of the approach using experiments. Furthermore, we discuss a modified shape space that is useful for isometric skeleton morphing. All of the newly presented …

Derived Categories And The Analytic Approach To General Reciprocity Laws. Part Iii, Michael Berg Jan 2010

Derived Categories And The Analytic Approach To General Reciprocity Laws. Part Iii, Michael Berg

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

Building on the scaffolding constructed in the first two articles in this series, we now proceed to the geometric phase of our sheaf (-complex) theoretic quasidualization of Kubota's formalism for n-Hilbert reciprocity. Employing recent work by Bridgeland on stability conditions, we extend our yoga of t-structures situated above diagrams of specifically designed derived categories to arrangements of metric spaces or complex manifolds. This prepares the way for proving n-Hilbert reciprocity by means of singularity analysis.

Algorithms For Upper Bounds Of Low Dimensional Group Homology, Joshua D. Roberts Jan 2010

Algorithms For Upper Bounds Of Low Dimensional Group Homology, Joshua D. Roberts

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

A motivational problem for group homology is a conjecture of Quillen that states, as reformulated by Anton, that the second homology of the general linear group over R = Z[1/p; ζp], for p an odd prime, is isomorphic to the second homology of the group of units of R, where the homology calculations are over the field of order p. By considering the group extension spectral sequence applied to the short exact sequence 1 → SL2GL2GL1 → 1 we show that the calculation of the homology …

On The Integrability Of Orthogonal Distributions In Poisson Manifolds, Daniel Fish, Serge Preston Jan 2010

On The Integrability Of Orthogonal Distributions In Poisson Manifolds, Daniel Fish, Serge Preston

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We study conditions for the integrability of the distribution defined on a regular Poisson manifold as the orthogonal complement (with respect to some (pseudo)-Riemannian metric) to the tangent spaces of the leaves of a symplectic foliation. Examples of integrability and non-integrability of this distribution are provided.

Continuous Trace C*-Algebras, Gauge Groups And Rationalization, John R. Klein, Claude Schochet, Samuel B. Smith

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

Let ζ be an n-dimensional complex matrix bundle over a compact metric space X and let Aζ denote the C*-algebra of sections of this bundle. We determine the rational homotopy type as an H-space of UAζ, the group of unitaries of Aζ. The answer turns out to be independent of the bundle ζ and depends only upon n and the rational cohomology of X. We prove analogous results for the gauge group and the projective gauge group of a principal bundle over a compact metric space X.

Flattening A Cone, Sean A. Broughton Aug 2009

Flattening A Cone, Sean A. Broughton

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

We want to manufacture a cut-off slanted cone from a flat sheet of metal. If the cone were a normal right cone we know that we would simply cut out a sector of a circle and roll it up. However the cone is slanted. We want to know what the flattened shape looks like so that we can cut it out and roll it up to closely approximate correct final shape. We also want to minimize the amount of wasted metal after the shape is cut out.

The problem, and it generalizations may be solved analytically but the analytical solution …

Fan Cohomology And Its Application To Equivariant K-Theory Of Toric Varieties, Suanne Au Jul 2009

Fan Cohomology And Its Application To Equivariant K-Theory Of Toric Varieties, Suanne Au

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Mu-Wan Huang, Mark Walker and I established an explicit formula for the equivariant K-groups of affine toric varieties. We also recovered a result due to Vezzosi and Vistoli, which expresses the equivariant K-groups of a smooth toric variety in terms of the K-groups of its maximal open affine toric subvarieties. This dissertation investigates the situation when the toric variety X is neither affine nor smooth. In many cases, we compute the Čech cohomology groups of the presheaf KqT on X endowed with a topology. Using these calculations and Walker's Localization Theorem for equivariant K-theory, we give explicit formulas …

Some Properties Of Yao Y4 Subgraphs, Joseph O'Rourke May 2009

Some Properties Of Yao Y4 Subgraphs, Joseph O'Rourke

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

The Yao graph for k = 4, Y4, is naturally partitioned into four subgraphs, one per quadrant. We show that the subgraphs for one quadrant differ from the subgraphs for two adjacent quadrants in three properties: planarity, connectedness, and whether the directed graphs are spanners.

Galois Structure And De Rhan Invariants Of Elliptic Curves, Darren B. Glass, Sonin Kwon Jan 2009

Galois Structure And De Rhan Invariants Of Elliptic Curves, Darren B. Glass, Sonin Kwon

Math Faculty Publications

Let K be a number field with ring of integers OK. Suppose a finite group G acts numerically tamely on a regular scheme X over OK. One can then define a de Rham invariant class in the class group Cl(OK[G]), which is a refined Euler characteristic of the de Rham complex of X. Our results concern the classification of numerically tame actions and the de Rham invariant classes. We first describe how all Galois etale G-covers of a K-variety may be built up from finite Galois extensions of K and from geometric covers. When X is a curve of positive …

Banach Algebras And Rational Homotopy Theory, Gregory Lupton, N. Christopher Phillips, Claude Schochet, Samuel B. Smith

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

Let A be a unital commutative Banach algebra with maximal ideal space Max(A). We determine the rational H-type of GLn(A), the group of invertible n x n matrices with coefficients in A, in terms of the rational cohomology of Max(A). We also address an old problem of J. L. Taylor. Let Lcn(A) denote the space of "last columns" of GLn(A). We construct a natural isomorphism

Ȟs(Max(A);ℚ) ≅ π2n-1-s(Lcn(A)) ⊗ ℚ …

Poisson Structures Of Equations Associated With Groups Of Diffeomorphisms, Rossen Ivanov Jan 2009

Poisson Structures Of Equations Associated With Groups Of Diffeomorphisms, Rossen Ivanov

Conference papers

A class of equations describing the geodesic flow for a right-invariant metric on the group of diffeomorphisms of Rn is reviewed from the viewpoint of their Lie-Poisson structures. A subclass of these equations is analogous to the Euler equations in hydrodynamics (for n = 3), preserving the volume element of the domain of fluid flow. An example in n = 1 dimension is the Camassa-Holm equation, which is a geodesic flow equation on the group of diffeomorphisms, preserving the H1 metric.

Some Curious Cut-Ups, Jeremiah Farrell, Ivan Moscovich Jan 2009

Some Curious Cut-Ups, Jeremiah Farrell, Ivan Moscovich

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

We have noticed a certain kind of n-gon dissection into triangles that has a wonderful property of interest to most puzzlists. Namely that any two triangles have at least one edge in common yet no two triangles need be congruent. In an informal poll of specialists at a recent convention, none of them saw immediately how this could be accomplished. But in fact it is very straightforward.

Empirical Development Of An Instructional Product And Its Impact On Mastery Of Geometry Concepts, Donaldson Williams Jan 2009

Empirical Development Of An Instructional Product And Its Impact On Mastery Of Geometry Concepts, Donaldson Williams

Dissertations

Problem

Relatively poor levels of mathematical thinking among American school children have been identified as a major issue over the past half century. Many efforts have been made to increase the mathematics performance of children in schools. Additionally, out-of-school-time programs have attempted to address this issue as well. Holistic development is one of the distinguishing features of Seventh-day Adventist instructional programs. Yet, as of 2007, the Pathfinder program, an informal educational program operated by the world-wide Seventh-day Adventist church, had no instructional product designed to foster participants’ cognitive development in mathematics. This study focused on the empirical development of an …

Topological Structures In The Equities Market Network, Gregory Leibon, Scott Pauls, Daniel Rockmore, Robert Savell Dec 2008

Topological Structures In The Equities Market Network, Gregory Leibon, Scott Pauls, Daniel Rockmore, Robert Savell

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present a new method for articulating scale-dependent topological descriptions of the network structure inherent in many complex systems. The technique is based on “partition decoupled null models,” a new class of null models that incorporate the interaction of clustered partitions into a random model and generalize the Gaussian ensemble. As an application, we analyze a correlation matrix derived from 4 years of close prices of equities in the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation (NASDAQ). In this example, we expose (i) a natural structure composed of 2 interacting partitions of …

Unfolding Convex Polyhedra Via Quasigeodesic Star Unfoldings, Jin-Ichi Itoh, Joseph O'Rourke, Costin Vîlcu Dec 2008

Unfolding Convex Polyhedra Via Quasigeodesic Star Unfoldings, Jin-Ichi Itoh, Joseph O'Rourke, Costin Vîlcu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We extend the notion of a star unfolding to be based on a simple quasigeodesic loop Q rather than on a point. This gives a new general method to unfold the surface of any convex polyhedron P to a simple, planar polygon: shortest paths from all vertices of P to Q are cut, and all but one segment of Q is cut.

Unfolding Manhattan Towers, Mirela Damian, Robin Flatland, Joseph O'Rourke

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We provide an algorithm for unfolding the surface of any orthogonal polyhedron that falls into a particular shape class we call Manhattan Towers, to a nonoverlapping planar orthogonal polygon. The algorithm cuts along edges of a 4×5×1 refinement of the vertex grid.

Metrology And Proportion In The Ecclesiastical Architecture Of Medieval Ireland, Avril Behan, Rachel Moss Jun 2008

Metrology And Proportion In The Ecclesiastical Architecture Of Medieval Ireland, Avril Behan, Rachel Moss

Conference Papers

The aim of this paper is to examine the extent to which detailed empirical analysis of the metrology and proportional systems used in the design of Irish ecclesiastical architecture can be analysed to provide historical information not otherwise available. Focussing on a relatively limited sample of window tracery designs as a case study, it will first set out to establish what, if any, systems were in use, and then what light these might shed on the background, training and work practices of the masons, and, by association, the patrons responsible for employing them.

Cauchy’S Arm Lemma On A Growing Sphere, Zachary Abel, David Charlton, Sébastien Collette, Erik D. Demaine, Martin L. Demaine, Stefan Langerman, Joseph O'Rourke, Val Pinciu, Godfried Toussaint

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We propose a variant of Cauchy's Lemma, proving that when a convex chain on one sphere is redrawn (with the same lengths and angles) on a larger sphere, the distance between its endpoints increases. The main focus of this work is a comparison of three alternate proofs, to show the links between Toponogov's Comparison Theorem, Legendre's Theorem and Cauchy's Arm Lemma.

Fiber Bundle Description Of Flow And Nonlinear Hydrodynamics On Circles, Andrei Ludu Apr 2008

Fiber Bundle Description Of Flow And Nonlinear Hydrodynamics On Circles, Andrei Ludu

Publications

We introduce a differential geometry description of the path lines, stream lines and particles contours in hydrodynamics. We present a generalized form of a Korteweg-de Vries type of equation for the exterior of a circle. Nonlinearities from the boundary conditions, surface tension and the Euler equations are taken into account, but the flow is considered inviscid and irrotational. For the circular case we describe the traveling waves shapes, solitons and the particles trajectories.
