This activity is an investigation of a special nonregular tetrahedron that can be arranged to fill space without leaving any internal gaps in the same way that certain planar figures tessellate the plane. These tetrahedra can be connected together with hinges to make fun and interesting puzzles. More background information can be found in the paper "An Amazing, Space-Filling, Non-Regular Tetrahedron" by Joyce Frost and Peg Cagle, published by the IAS/Park City Mathematics Institute (available at mathforum.org/pcmi/hstp/resources/dodeca/).

We introduce a generalized cake-cutting problem in which we seek to divide multiple cakes so that two players may get their most-preferred piece selections: a choice of one piece from each cake, allowing for the possibility of linked preferences over the cakes. For two players, we show that disjoint envy-free piece selections may not exist for two cakes cut into two pieces each, and they may not exist for three cakes cut into three pieces each. However, there do exist such divisions for two cakes cut into three pieces each, and for three cakes cut into four pieces each. The …

A Fixed Point Theorem For The Infinite-Dimensional Simplex, Douglas Rizzolo '08, Francis E. Su

We define the infinite-dimensional simplex to be the closure of the convex hull of the standard basis vectors in R∞, and prove that this space has the fixed point property: any continuous function from the space into itself has a fixed point. Our proof is constructive, in the sense that it can be used to find an approximate fixed point; the proof relies on elementary analysis and Sperner's lemma. The fixed point theorem is shown to imply Schauder's fixed point theorem on infinite-dimensional compact convex subsets of normed spaces.

As per the title, the nature of sets that can be removed from a product of more than one connected, arcwise connected, or point arcwise connected spaces while preserving the appropriate kind of connectedness is studied. This can depend on the cardinality of the set being removed or sometimes just on the cardinality of what is removed from one or two factor spaces. Sometimes it can depend on topological properties of the set being removed or its trace on various factor spaces. Some of the results are complicated to prove while being easy to state. We compute the local Gromov–Witten invariants of certain configurations of rational curves in a Calabi–Yau threefold. These configurations are connected subcurves of the “minimal trivalent configuration”, which is a particular tree of ℙ1’s with specified formal neighborhood. We show that these local invariants are equal to certain global or ordinary Gromov–Witten invariants of a blowup of ℙ3 at points, and we compute these ordinary invariants using the geometry of the Cremona transform. We also realize the configurations in question as formal toric schemes and compute their formal Gromov–Witten invariants using the mathematical and physical theories of the …

We present a proof of Ky Fan's combinatorial lemma on labellings of triangulated spheres that differs from earlier proofs in that it is constructive. We slightly generalize the hypotheses of Fan's lemma to allow for triangulations of Sn that contain a flag of hemispheres. As a consequence, we can obtain a constructive proof of Tucker's lemma that holds for a more general class of triangulations than the usual version.

We show that the size of a minimal simplicial cover of a polytope P is a lower bound for the size of a minimal triangulation of P, including ones with extra vertices. We then use this fact to study minimal triangulations of cubes, and we improve lower bounds for covers and triangulations in dimensions 4 through at least 12 (and possibly more dimensions as well). Important ingredients are an analysis of the number of exterior faces that a simplex in the cube can have of a specified dimension and volume, and a characterization of corner simplices in terms of their …

Given n vectors {i} ∈ [0, 1)d, consider a random walk on the d-dimensional torus d = ℝd/ℤd generated by these vectors by successive addition and subtraction. For certain sets of vectors, this walk converges to Haar (uniform) measure on the torus. We determine several families of so-called Cayley 4-dimensional manifolds in the real Euclidean 8-space. Such manifolds are of interest because Cayley 4-manifolds are supersymmetric cycles that are candidates for representations of fundamental particles in String Theory. Moreover, some of the examples of Cayley manifolds discovered in this paper may be modified to construct explicit examples in our current search for new holomorphic invariants for Calabi-Yau 4-folds and for the further development of mirror symmetry.
We apply the classic results of Harvey and Lawson to find Cayley manifolds which are graphs of functions from the set of quaternions to itself. We …

In this paper we show how theorems of Borsuk-Ulam and Tucker can be used to construct a consensus-halving: a division of an object into two portions so that each of n people believes the portions are equal. Moreover, the division takes at most n cuts, which is best possible. This extends prior work using methods from combinatorial topology to solve fair division problems. Several applications of consensus-halving are discussed.

One way to understand the geometry of the real Grassmann manifold Gk(Rk+n) parameterizing oriented k-dimensional subspaces of Rk+n is to understand the volume-minimizing subvarieties in each homology class. Some of these subvarieties can be determined by using a calibration. In previous work, one of the authors calculated the set of 4-planes calibrated by the first Pontryagin form p1 on Gk(Rk+n) for all k,n ≥4, and identified a family of mutually congruent round 4-spheres which are consequently homologically volume-minimizing. In [ABN], Araujo, Beckenstein, and Narici add the capstone to a series of papers by several groups of authors by showing that if ρ is a biseparating map between two algebras of all real or complex-valued functions on realcompact spaces, then it is a continuous multiple of an isomorphism between these rings. Their proof uses relatively powerful analytic and topological techniques. In what follows, the extent to which such a result can be generalized to a wider class of algebras using algebraic techniques is investigated. We are unable, however to obtain the main result of [ABN] using these techniques.

If B is a ring (or module), and K is an ideal (or submodule) of B, let B(K) = {(a,b) є B x B:a-b є K}. The relationship between ideals (or submodules) of B and those of B(K) is examined carefully, and this construction is used to find a lattice-ordered subring of the ring C(R) of all continuous real-valued functions on the real line R with two z-ideals whose sum is not even semiprime.
