We generalize the stripping process to the (mod 2) $\mathbb{C}$- and $\mathbb{R}$-motivic settings. Throughout, we include discussion on how the process changes and the difficulties moving to more general settings. We also introduce antipodes and consider what a potential $\mathbb{R}$-motivic analogue may look like. Finally, we elaborate on how the results may be used in future work to generalize a nilpotence result of Walker and Wood.

Character theory arises in many distinct fields of mathematics, but its many instantiations often share a few key features: they arise in contexts where one object is acted on or parametrized by another, and they are often computed via "trace-like" formulas. Focusing on these properties, we present a categorical formalism for constructing such characters. We first define a notion of "loop representation" for symmetric monoidal bicategories, then build a character for such representations via the canonical symmetric monoidal trace. In 2007, Nora Ganter and Mikhail Kapranov defined the categorical trace, which they used to define the categorical character of a 2-representation. In 2008, Kate Ponto defined a shadow functor for bicategories. With the shadow functor, Dr. Ponto defined the bicategorical trace, which is a generalization of the symmetric monoidal trace for bicategories. How are these two notions of trace related to one another? We’ve used bicategorical traces to define a character theory for 2-representations, and the categorical character is an example.

Topology furnishes us with many commutative rings associated to finite groups. These include the complex representation ring, the Burnside ring, and the G-equivariant K-theory of a space. Often, these admit additional structure in the form of natural operations on the ring, such as power operations, symmetric powers, and Adams operations. We will discuss two ways of constructing Adams operations. The goal of this work is to understand these in the case of the Burnside ring.

Familiar constructions like the trace of a matrix and the Euler characteristic of a closed smooth manifold are generalized by a notion of trace of an endomorphism of a dualizable object in a bicategory equipped with a piece of additional structure called a shadow functor. Another example of this bicategorical trace, in the form of maps between Hochschild homology of bimodules, appears in a 1987 paper by Joseph Lipman, alongside a more mysterious ”cotrace” map involving Hochschild cohomology. Putting this cotrace on the same category-theoretic footing as the trace has led us to propose a ”bicategorical cotrace” in a closed …

We provide the slice (co)towers of \(\Si{V} H_{C_2}\ul M\) for a variety of \(C_2\)-representations \(V\) and \(C_2\)-Mackey functors \(\ul M\). We also determine a characterization of all 2-slices of equivariant spectra over the Klein four-group \(C_2\times C_2\). We then describe all slices of integral suspensions of the equivariant Eilenberg-MacLane spectrum \(H\ulZ\) for the constant Mackey functor over \(C_2\times C_2\). Additionally, we compute the slices and slice spectral sequence of integral suspensions of $H\ulZ$ for the group of equivariance $Q_8$. Along the way, we compute the Mackey functors \(\mpi_{k\rho} H_{K_4}\ulZ\) and $\mpi_{k\rho} H_{Q_8}\ulZ$.

My thesis work consists of two main projects with some connections. In the first project we establish a v1 periodicity theorem in Ext over the complex motivic Steenrod algebra. The element h1 of Ext, which detects the homotopy class \eta in the motivic Adams spectral sequence, is non-nilpotent and therefore generates h1-towers. Our result is that, apart from these h1-towers, v1 periodicity operators give isomorphisms in a range near the top of the Adams chart. This result generalizes well-known classical behavior.

Let $X$ be a finite simplicial complex and $f\colon X \to X$ be a continuous map. A point $x\in X$ is a fixed point if $f(x)=x$. Classically fixed point theory develops invariants and obstructions to the removal of fixed points through continuous deformation. The Lefschetz Fixed number is an algebraic invariant that obstructs the removal of fixed points through continuous deformation. \[L(f)=\sum_{i=0}^\infty (-1)^i \tr\left(f_i:H_i(X;\bQ)\to H_i(X;\bQ)\right). \] The Lefschetz Fixed Point theorem states if $L(f)\neq 0$, then $f$ (and therefore all $g\simeq f$) has a fixed point. A graph property is monotone if it is closed under the removal of edges and vertices. Given a graph G and a monotone graph property P, one can associate to the pair (G,P) a simplicial complex, which serves as a way to encode graph properties within faces of a topological space. We study these graph-theoretic simplicial complexes using combinatorial and topological approaches as a way to inform our understanding of the graphs and their properties.

Quasicrystals have been shown to exhibit physical properties that are dramatically different from their periodic counterparts. A limited number of magnetic quasicrystals have been fabricated and measured, and they do not exhibit long-range magnetic order, which is in direct conflict with simulations that indicate such a state should be accessible. This dissertation adopts a metamaterials approach in which artificial quasicrystals are fabricated and studied with the specific goal of identifying how aperiodicity affects magnetic long-range order. The objective of this research is to evaluate and introduce a new methodology regarding rural highway safety. Current practices rely on crash prediction models that utilize specific explanatory variables, whereas the depository of knowledge for past research is the Highway Safety Manual (HSM). First introduced by Forman in 1998, discrete Morse theory has become a standard tool in topological combinatorics. The main idea of discrete Morse theory is to pair cells in a cellular complex in a manner that permits cancellation via elementary collapses, reducing the complex under consideration to a homotopy equivalent complex with fewer cells. In chapter 1, we introduce the relevant background for discrete Morse theory.

This dissertation is divided into four chapters. In Chapter 2 the equivariant homology groups of upper order ideals in the partition lattice are computed. The homology groups of these filters are written in terms of border strip Specht modules as well as in terms of links in an associated complex in the lattice of compositions. The classification is used to reproduce topological calculations of many well-studied subcomplexes of the partition lattice, including the d-divisible partition lattice and the Frobenius complex. In algebraic topology, we work to classify objects. My research aims to build a better understanding of one important notion of classification of differentiable manifolds called cobordism. Cobordism is an equivalence relation, and the equivalence classes in cobordism form a graded ring, with operations disjoint union and Cartesian product. My dissertation studies this graded ring in two ways:
1. by attempting to find preferred class representatives for each class in the ring.
2. by computing the image of the ring under an interesting ring homomorphism called the Witten Genus.

This dissertation demonstrates a procedure to view any quasitoric manifold as a “minimal” sub-manifold of an ambient quasitoric manifold of codimension two via the wedge construction applied to the quotient polytope. These we term wedge quasitoric manifolds. We prove existence utilizing a construction on the quotient polytope and characteristic matrix and demonstrate conditions allowing the base manifold to be viewed as dual to the first Chern class of the wedge manifold. A long-standing problem in cobordism theory has been to find convenient manifolds to represent cobordism classes. For example, in the late 1950's, Hirzebruch asked which complex cobordism classes can be represented by smooth connected algebraic varieties. This question is still open. Progress can be made on this and related problems by studying certain convenient connected algebraic varieties, namely smooth projective toric varieties. The primary focus of this dissertation is to determine which complex cobordism classes can be represented by smooth projective toric varieties. Hydraulic geometry relationships and regional curves are used in natural channel design to assist engineers, biologists, and fluvial geomorphologists in the efforts undertaken to ameliorate previous activities that have diminished, impaired or destroyed the structure and function of stream systems. Bankfull channel characteristics were assessed for 14 United States Geological Survey (USGS) gaged sites in the Inner Bluegrass and 15 USGS gaged sites in the Outer Bluegrass Regions of Kentucky. Hydraulic geometry relationships and regional curves were developed for the aforementioned regions.

A motivational problem for group homology is a conjecture of Quillen that states, as reformulated by Anton, that the second homology of the general linear group over R = Z[1/p; ζp], for p an odd prime, is isomorphic to the second homology of the group of units of R, where the homology calculations are over the field of order p.
