Manifold Learning In Robotics: A Tutorial And Survey, Marcus Hawkins

In this article, we hope to represent the current state of the art of manifold learning in an understandable and approachable way. The authors will present a general overview core algorithms associated with linear and nonlinear dimensionality reduction techniques, give rudimentary definitions from differential geometry, and tenets of robotic perception, manipulation and path planning. Some of the historical applications of these algorithms will be presented, as well as conjectures about future uses, through examples from peer-reviewed journals.

This thesis will discuss the de Rham cohomology, homotopy invariance and the Mayer-Vietoris sequence. First the necessary information for this thesis is discussed such as differential p-forms, the exterior derivative as well as pull back of a map. The de Rham cohomology is defined explicitly, some properties of the de Rham cohomology will also be discussed. It will be shown that the de Rham cohomology is in fact a homotopy invariant as well as some examples using homotopy invariance are provided. Decomposing Manifolds In Low-Dimensions: From Heegaard Splittings To Trisections, Suixin "Cindy" Zhang

The decomposition of a topological space into smaller and simpler pieces is useful for understanding the space. In 1898, Poul Heegaard introduced the concept of a Heegaard splitting, which is a bisection of a 3-manifold. Heegaard diagrams, which describe Heegaard splittings combinatorially, have been recognized as a powerful tool for classifying 3-manifolds and producing important invariants of 3-manifolds. Handle decomposition, invented by Stephen Smale in 1962, describes how an n-manifold can be constructed by successively adding handles. In 2012, Gay and Kirby introduced trisections of 4-manifold, which are a four-dimensional analogues of Heegaard splittings in dimension three. Trisection diagrams give …

Sobolev inequalities, named after Sergei Lvovich Sobolev, relate norms in Sobolev spaces and give insight to how Sobolev spaces are embedded within each other. This thesis begins with an overview of Lebesgue and Sobolev spaces, leading into an introduction to Sobolev inequalities. Soon thereafter, we consider the behavior of Sobolev inequalities on Riemannian manifolds. We discuss how Sobolev inequalities are used to construct isoperimetric inequalities and bound volume growth, and how Sobolev inequalities imply families of other Sobolev inequalities.
