Book Vi Of The Mathematical Collection Of Pappus Of Alexandria, Translated By John B. Little, John B. Little, Pappus Of Alexandria Mar 2025

Book Vi Of The Mathematical Collection Of Pappus Of Alexandria, Translated By John B. Little, John B. Little, Pappus Of Alexandria

Holy Cross Bookshelf

Book VI of the Mathematical Collection is a collection of comments or notes about various points treated in parts of a collection of other texts sometimes known as the “Little Astronomy.” Pappus uses these works as sources and frequently quotes from them in this book. In the teaching of mathematical astronomy in late antiquity, and this would include the time of Pappus, the “Little Astronomy” is often understood to have been a follow-up to Euclid’s Elements and a preliminary to the study of the Almagest of Claudius Ptolemy (ca. 100–165 CE). The “Little Astronomy” included works by a group of …

Book V Of The Mathematical Collection Of Pappus Of Alexandria, Translated By John B. Little, Pappus Of Alexandria, John B. Little

Holy Cross Bookshelf

John B. Little is the translator.

Book V of the Mathematical Collection is addressed to a certain Megethion, about whom we know nothing else. From the context he may have been a student or patron of Pappus in Alexandria. In a heading at the start, Pappus says that the general theme will be comparisons between different geometric figures. The overall structure brings interesting relations and connections to the fore. The book opens with a very well-known and charming discussion of how the importance of such comparisons can be seen by considering the structures built by non-human creatures such as bees. …

Pappus Of Alexandria, Book Iii Of The Mathematical Collection, Pappus Of Alexandria, John B. Little

Holy Cross Bookshelf

John B. Little is the translator.

This is a translation of Book III of the Mathematical Collection by Pappus of Alexandria (ca. 290 - 350 CE) from the original Greek to English, following the edition of Friedrich Hultsch. While other books of the Mathematical Collection have been translated into English and short quotations from Book III have appeared in a number of places (see the Introduction), to my knowledge, no complete English translation of Book III has been published. Pappus was very influential as a sort of conduit between knowledge preserved from ancient Greek mathematics and European mathematicians in the …

Differential Calculus: From Practice To Theory, Eugene Boman, Robert Rogers Aug 2023

Differential Calculus: From Practice To Theory, Eugene Boman, Robert Rogers

Milne Open Textbooks

Differential Calculus: From Practice to Theory covers all of the topics in a typical first course in differential calculus. Initially it focuses on using calculus as a problem solving tool (in conjunction with analytic geometry and trigonometry) by exploiting an informal understanding of differentials (infinitesimals). As much as possible large, interesting, and important historical problems (the motion of falling bodies and trajectories, the shape of hanging chains, the Witch of Agnesi) are used to develop key ideas. Only after skill with the computational tools of calculus has been developed is the question of rigor seriously broached. At that point, the …

Practical Geometry, Christopher Clavius S.J., John B. Little Nov 2021

Practical Geometry, Christopher Clavius S.J., John B. Little

Holy Cross Bookshelf

John B. Little is the translator.

This is a Latin to English translation of Geometria Practica by Chrisopher Clavius, S.J. (1538-1612), the preeminent Jesuit mathematician and mathematical astronomer of his time. The first edition of Geometria Practica appeared in 1604. This translation is of the second edition from 1606, produced by the printshop of Johann Albin in Mainz.

In preparing this translation we have made use of the electronic version of the 1606 edition of the Geometria Practica maintained by the Bayerische StaatsBibliothek. In particular, all of the figures have been copied from the scanned images here. The typesetting was …

Constructing A Square An Ancient Indian Way Activity, Cynthia J. Huffman Ph.D. Aug 2017

Constructing A Square An Ancient Indian Way Activity, Cynthia J. Huffman Ph.D.

Open Educational Resources - Math

In this activity students use string to model one of the ways that was used in ancient India for constructing a square. The construction was used in building a temporary fire altar. The activity is based on a translation by Sen and Bag of the Baudhāyana-śulba-sūtra.

Euler Construction Activity, Cynthia J. Huffman Ph.D. Aug 2017

Euler Construction Activity, Cynthia J. Huffman Ph.D.

Open Educational Resources - Math

Original sources of mathematics provide many opportunities for students to both do mathematics and to improve their problem solving skills. It is also interesting to explore original sources in new ways with the use of technology. In this activity, students can gain experience with dynamic geometry software and enhance their geometric intuition by working through a construction given by Euler in 1783.

Constructing A Square Indian Fire Altar Activity, Cynthia J. Huffman Ph.D. Aug 2017

Constructing A Square Indian Fire Altar Activity, Cynthia J. Huffman Ph.D.

Open Educational Resources - Math

In this activity, we will model constructing a square fire altar with a method similar to one used by people in ancient India. The fire altars, which were made of bricks, had various shapes. Instructions for building the altars were in Vedic texts called Śulba-sūtras. We will follow instructions for constructing a square gārhapatya fire altar from the Baudhāyana-śulba-sūtra, which was written during the Middle Vedic period, about 800-500 BC.

Integer Optimization And Computational Algebraic Topology, Bala Krishnamoorthy Apr 2011

Integer Optimization And Computational Algebraic Topology, Bala Krishnamoorthy

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

We present recently discovered connections between integer optimization, or integer programming (IP), and homology. Under reasonable assumptions, these results lead to efficient solutions of several otherwise hard-to-solve problems from computational topology and geometric analysis. The main result equates the total unimodularity of the boundary matrix of a simplicial complex to an algebraic topological condition on the complex (absence of relative torsion), which is often satisfied in real-life applications . When the boundary matrix is totally unimodular, the problem of finding the shortest chain homologous under Z (ring of integers) to a given chain, which is inherently an integer program, can …
