Modeling Residence Time Distribution Of Chromatographic Perfusion Resin For Large Biopharmaceutical Molecules: A Computational Fluid Dynamic Study, Kevin Vehar Dec 2020

Modeling Residence Time Distribution Of Chromatographic Perfusion Resin For Large Biopharmaceutical Molecules: A Computational Fluid Dynamic Study, Kevin Vehar

KGI Theses and Dissertations

The need for production processes of large biotherapeutic particles, such as virus-based particles and extracellular vesicles, has risen due to increased demand in the development of vaccinations, gene therapies, and cancer treatments. Liquid chromatography plays a significant role in the purification process and is routinely used with therapeutic protein production. However, performance with larger macromolecules is often inconsistent, and parameter estimation for process development can be extremely time- and resource-intensive. This thesis aimed to utilize advances in computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling to generate a first-principle model of the chromatographic process while minimizing model parameter estimation's physical resource demand. Specifically, …

Classification Of Some First Order Functional Differential Equations With Constant Coefficients To Solvable Lie Algebras, J. Z. Lobo, Y. S. Valaulikar

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we shall apply symmetry analysis to some first order functional differential equations with constant coefficients. The approach used in this paper accounts for obtaining the inverse of the classification. We define the standard Lie bracket and make a complete classification of some first order linear functional differential equations with constant coefficients to solvable Lie algebras. We also classify some nonlinear functional differential equations with constant coefficients to solvable Lie algebras.

Dual Pole Indicatrix Curve And Surface, Süleyman Senyurt, Abdussamet Çalıskan

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, the vectorial moment vector of the unit Darboux vector, which consists of the motion of the Frenet vectors on any curve, is reexpressed in the form of Frenet vectors. According to the new version of this vector, the parametric equation of the ruled surface corresponding to the unit dual pole indicatrix curve is given. The integral invariants of this surface are rederived and illustrated by presenting with examples.

Configuration Spaces For The Working Undergraduate, Lucas Williams Nov 2020

Configuration Spaces For The Working Undergraduate, Lucas Williams

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

Configuration spaces form a rich class of topological objects which are not usually presented to an undergraduate audience. Our aim is to present configuration spaces in a manner accessible to the advanced undergraduate. We begin with a slight introduction to the topic before giving necessary background on algebraic topology. We then discuss configuration spaces of the euclidean plane and the braid groups they give rise to. Lastly, we discuss configuration spaces of graphs and the various techniques which have been developed to pursue their study.

Perceiving Mathematics And Art, Edmund Harriss Oct 2020

Perceiving Mathematics And Art, Edmund Harriss

Mic Lectures

Mathematics and art provide powerful lenses to perceive and understand the world, part of an ancient tradition whether it starts in the South Pacific with tapa cloth and wave maps for navigation or in Iceland with knitting patterns and sunstones. Edmund Harriss, an artist and assistant clinical professor of mathematics in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, explores these connections in his Honors College Mic lecture.

Dupin Submanifolds In Lie Sphere Geometry (Updated Version), Thomas E. Cecil, Shiing-Shen Chern Oct 2020

Dupin Submanifolds In Lie Sphere Geometry (Updated Version), Thomas E. Cecil, Shiing-Shen Chern

Mathematics and Computer Science Department Faculty Scholarship

A hypersurface Mn-1 in Euclidean space En is proper Dupin if the number of distinct principal curvatures is constant on Mn-1, and each principal curvature function is constant along each leaf of its principal foliation. This paper was originally published in 1989 (see Comments below), and it develops a method for the local study of proper Dupin hypersurfaces in the context of Lie sphere geometry using moving frames. This method has been effective in obtaining several classification theorems of proper Dupin hypersurfaces since that time. This updated version of the paper contains the original exposition together …

Intrinsic Curvature For Schemes, Pat Lank Oct 2020

Intrinsic Curvature For Schemes, Pat Lank

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

This thesis develops an algebraic analog of psuedo-Riemannian geometry for relative schemes whose cotangent sheaf is finite locally free. It is a generalization of the algebraic differential calculus proposed by Dr. Ernst Kunz in an unpublished manuscript to the non-affine case. These analogs include the psuedo-Riemannian metric, Levi-Civit´a connection, curvature, and various existence theorems.

Topological And H^Q Equivalence Of Cyclic N-Gonal Actions On Riemann Surfaces - Part Ii, Sean A. Broughton Sep 2020

Topological And H^Q Equivalence Of Cyclic N-Gonal Actions On Riemann Surfaces - Part Ii, Sean A. Broughton

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

We consider conformal actions of the finite group G on a closed Riemann surface S, as well as algebraic actions of G on smooth, complete, algebraic curves over an arbitrary, algebraically closed field. There are several notions of equivalence of actions, the most studied of which is topological equivalence, because of its close relationship to the branch locus of moduli space. A second important equivalence relation is that induced by representation of G on spaces of holomorphic q-differentials. The notion of topological equivalence does not work well in positive characteristic. We shall discuss an alternative to topological equivalence, …

Numerical Computations Of Vortex Formation Length In Flow Past An Elliptical Cylinder, Matthew Karlson, Bogdan Nita, Ashwin Vaidya Sep 2020

Numerical Computations Of Vortex Formation Length In Flow Past An Elliptical Cylinder, Matthew Karlson, Bogdan Nita, Ashwin Vaidya

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We examine two dimensional properties of vortex shedding past elliptical cylinders through numerical simulations. Specifically, we investigate the vortex formation length in the Reynolds number regime 10 to 100 for elliptical bodies of aspect ratio in the range 0.4 to 1.4. Our computations reveal that in the steady flow regime, the change in the vortex length follows a linear profile with respect to the Reynolds number, while in the unsteady regime, the time averaged vortex length decreases in an exponential manner with increasing Reynolds number. The transition in profile is used to identify the critical Reynolds number which marks the …

On Product Of Smooth Neutrosophic Topological Spaces, Florentin Smarandache, Kalaivani Chandran, Swathi Sundari Sundaramoorthy, Saeid Jafari Sep 2020

On Product Of Smooth Neutrosophic Topological Spaces, Florentin Smarandache, Kalaivani Chandran, Swathi Sundari Sundaramoorthy, Saeid Jafari

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper, we develop the notion of the basis for a smooth neutrosophic topology in a more natural way. As a sequel, we define the notion of symmetric neutrosophic quasi-coincident neighborhood systems and prove some interesting results that fit with the classical ones, to establish the consistency of theory developed. Finally, we define and discuss the concept of product topology, in this context, using the definition of basis.

Growth Of Conjugacy Classes Of Reciprocal Words In Triangle Groups, Blanca T. Marmolejo Sep 2020

Growth Of Conjugacy Classes Of Reciprocal Words In Triangle Groups, Blanca T. Marmolejo

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In this thesis we obtain the growth rates for conjugacy classes of reciprocal words for triangle groups of the form G = Z2 ∗ H where H is finitely generated and does not contain an order 2 element. We explore cases where H is infinite cyclic and finite cyclic. The quotient O = H/G is an orbifold and contains a cone point of order 2, due to the first factor Z2 in the free product G. The reciprocal words in G correspond to geodesics on O which pass through the order 2 cone point on O. We use methods from …

Spectral Sequences For Almost Complex Manifolds, Qian Chen Sep 2020

Spectral Sequences For Almost Complex Manifolds, Qian Chen

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In recent work, two new cohomologies were introduced for almost complex manifolds: the so-called J-cohomology and N-cohomology [CKT17]. For the case of integrable (complex) structures, the former cohomology was already considered in [DGMS75], and the latter agrees with de Rham cohomology. In this dissertation, using ideas from [CW18], we introduce spectral sequences for these two cohomologies, showing the two cohomologies have natural bigradings. We show the spectral sequence for the J-cohomology converges at the second page whenever the almost complex structure is integrable, and explain how both fit in a natural diagram involving Bott-Chern cohomology and the Frolicher spectral sequence. …

The Künneth Formula And Applications, Melissa Sugimoto Aug 2020

The Künneth Formula And Applications, Melissa Sugimoto

SURF Posters and Papers

The de Rham cohomology of a manifold is a homotopy invariant that expresses basic topological information about smooth manifolds. The q-th de Rham cohomology of the n-dimensional Euclidean space is the vector space defined by the closed q-forms over the exact q-forms. Furthermore, the support of a continuous function f on a topological space X is the closure of the set on which f is nonzero. The result of restricting the definition of the de Rham cohomology to functions with compact support is called the de Rham cohomology with compact support, or the compact cohomology. The concept of cohomology can …

The Poincaré Duality Theorem And Its Applications, Natanael Alpay, Melissa Sugimoto, Mihaela Vajiac Aug 2020

The Poincaré Duality Theorem And Its Applications, Natanael Alpay, Melissa Sugimoto, Mihaela Vajiac

SURF Posters and Papers

In this talk I will explain the duality between the deRham cohomology of a manifold M and the compactly supported cohomology on the same space. This phenomenon is entitled “Poincaré duality” and it describes a general occurrence in differential topology, a duality between spaces of closed, exact differentiable forms on a manifold and their compactly supported counterparts. In order to define and prove this duality I will start with the simple definition of the dual space of a vector space, with the definition of a positive definite inner product on a vector space, then define the concept of a manifold. …

A 3d Image-Guided System To Improve Myocardial Revascularization Decision-Making For Patients With Coronary Artery Disease, Haipeng Tang Aug 2020

A 3d Image-Guided System To Improve Myocardial Revascularization Decision-Making For Patients With Coronary Artery Disease, Haipeng Tang

Dissertations

OBJECTIVES. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common type of heart disease and kills over 360,000 people a year in the United States. Myocardial revascularization (MR) is a standard interventional treatment for patients with stable CAD. Fluoroscopy angiography is real-time anatomical imaging and routinely used to guide MR by visually estimating the percent stenosis of coronary arteries. However, a lot of patients do not benefit from the anatomical information-guided MR without functional testing. Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) is a widely used functional testing for CAD evaluation but limits to the absence of anatomical information. …

Trisections Of Flat Surface Bundles Over Surfaces, Marla Williams Aug 2020

Trisections Of Flat Surface Bundles Over Surfaces, Marla Williams

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A trisection of a smooth 4-manifold is a decomposition into three simple pieces with nice intersection properties. Work by Gay and Kirby shows that every smooth, connected, orientable 4-manifold can be trisected. Natural problems in trisection theory are to exhibit trisections of certain classes of 4-manifolds and to determine the minimal trisection genus of a particular 4-manifold.

Let $\Sigma_g$ denote the closed, connected, orientable surface of genus $g$. In this thesis, we show that the direct product $\Sigma_g\times\Sigma_h$ has a $((2g+1)(2h+1)+1;2g+2h)$-trisection, and that these parameters are minimal. We provide a description of the trisection, and an algorithm to generate a …

A Review Of Fuzzy Soft Topological Spaces, Intuitionistic Fuzzy Soft Topological Spaces And Neutrosophic Soft Topological Spaces, Florentin Smarandache, M. Parimala, M. Karthika

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The notion of fuzzy sets initiated to overcome the uncertainty of an object. Fuzzy topological space, intuitionistic fuzzy sets in topological structure space, vagueness in topological structure space, rough sets in topological space, theory of hesitancy and neutrosophic topological space, etc. are the extension of fuzzy sets. Soft set is a family of parameters which is also a set. Fuzzy soft topological space, intuitionistic fuzzy soft and neutrosophic soft topological space are obtained by incorporating soft sets with various topological structures. This motivates to write a review and study on various soft set concepts. This paper shows the detailed review …

Geometry Aided Sonification, Michael Tecce Jul 2020

Geometry Aided Sonification, Michael Tecce

Computer Science Summer Fellows

Sonification is the process of deriving an audio representation of a time series which conveys important information about that time series. Otology and vision science have established that humans process audio information more quickly than visual information, and sonification can convey data to the visually impaired. In our work, we implement pipelines using Python/Numpy, and we handle both ordinary 1D time series and multivariate time series. For 1D time series, we find that using data to modulate the pitch or timing of preselected sounds (such as sine waves) simply and effectively captures repeating patterns and anomalies/outliers within the data. To …

Conjugacy Separability And Cyclic Conjugacy Separability Of Certain Hnn Extensions, Generalised Free Products And Tree Products, Hui Min Lim Jul 2020

Conjugacy Separability And Cyclic Conjugacy Separability Of Certain Hnn Extensions, Generalised Free Products And Tree Products, Hui Min Lim

Student Works (2020-2029)

In this thesis, we study two interrelated strong residually finite properties of groups, namely conjugacy separability and cyclic conjugacy separability. We extend them to certain HNN extensions, generalized free products and tree products where the associated subgroups and amalgamated subgroups are not necessarily cyclic. In the first part of the thesis, we consider HNN extensions. We begin by establishing two criteria, one for conjugacy separability and another for cyclic conjugacy separability. Using these two criteria we establish conditions for HNN extensions where the associated subgroups are central or they are a finite extension of a central subgroup or cyclic to …

Variants Of Meir-Keeler Fixed Point Theorem And Applications Of Soft Set-Valued Maps, Akbar Azam, Mohammed Shehu Shagari Jun 2020

Variants Of Meir-Keeler Fixed Point Theorem And Applications Of Soft Set-Valued Maps, Akbar Azam, Mohammed Shehu Shagari

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we prove a Meir-Keeler type common fixed point theorem for two mappings for which the range set of the first one is a family of soft sets, called soft set-valued map and the second is a point-to-point mapping. In addition, it is also shown that under some suitable conditions, a soft set-valued map admits a selection having a unique fixed point. In support of the obtained result, nontrivial examples are provided. The novelty of the presented idea herein is that it extends the Meir-Keeler fixed point theorem and the theory of selections for multivalued mappings from the …

On Geometry Of Spherical Image In Minkowski Space-Time With Timelike Type-2 Parallel Transport Frame, Solouma Solouma, Ibrahim Al-Dayel Jun 2020

On Geometry Of Spherical Image In Minkowski Space-Time With Timelike Type-2 Parallel Transport Frame, Solouma Solouma, Ibrahim Al-Dayel

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we investigate a different type of the parallel transport frame in 3-dimensional Minkowski space R^3_1 by using the binormal vector field of a timelike regular curve as common vector field to introduce, and we recall this frame as " timelike type-2 parallel transport frame". Also, we present new spherical images and call them as timelike type-2 parallel transport spherical images by translating the induced frame vectors to the center of unit Lorentzian sphere in 3-dimensional Minkowski space R^3_1. Additionally, we obtain the Frenet apparatus of these new spherical images in terms of base curves timelike type-2 parallel …

New Results For Compatible Mappings Of Type A And Subsequential Continuous Mappings, Rajinder Sharma, Vishal Gupta, Mukesh Kushwaha Jun 2020

New Results For Compatible Mappings Of Type A And Subsequential Continuous Mappings, Rajinder Sharma, Vishal Gupta, Mukesh Kushwaha

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we corroborated some common fixed point theorems for two pairs of self mappings by using the impression of compatibility of type A and subsequential continuity (alternatively subcompatiblity and reciprocal continuity) in multiplicative metric spaces (MMS). The proven results are the improved version in a manner that the completeness, closedness and continuity of the mappings are relaxed.

Derivable Single Valued Neutrosophic Graphs Based On Km-Fuzzy Metric, Florentin Smarandache, Mohammad Hamidi Jun 2020

Derivable Single Valued Neutrosophic Graphs Based On Km-Fuzzy Metric, Florentin Smarandache, Mohammad Hamidi

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper we consider the concept of KM-fuzzy metric spaces and we introduce a novel concept of KM-single valued neutrosophic metric graphs based on KM-fuzzy metric spaces. Then we investigate the finite KM-fuzzy metric spaces with respect to KM-fuzzy metrics and we construct the KMfuzzy metric spaces on any given non-empty sets. We try to extend the concept of KM-fuzzy metric spaces to a larger class of KM-fuzzy metric spaces such as union and product of KM-fuzzy metric spaces and in this regard we investigate the class of products of KM-single valued neutrosophic metric graphs. In the final, we …

C# Application To Deal With Neutrosophic G(Alpha)-Closed Sets In Neutrosophic Topology, S. Saranya, M. Vigneshwaran, S. Jafari

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we have developed a C# Application for finding the values of the complement, union, intersection and the inclusion of any two neutrosophic sets in the neutrosophic field by using .NET Framework, Microsoft Visual Studio and C# Programming Language. In addition to this, the system can find neutrosophic topology, neutrosophic alpha-closed sets and neutrosophic g(alpha)-closed sets in each resultant screens. Also, this computer-based application produces the complement values of each neutrosophic closed sets.
