Toroidal Embeddings And Desingularization, Leon Nguyen Jun 2018

Toroidal Embeddings And Desingularization, Leon Nguyen

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Algebraic geometry is the study of solutions in polynomial equations using objects and shapes. Differential geometry is based on surfaces, curves, and dimensions of shapes and applying calculus and algebra. Desingularizing the singularities of a variety plays an important role in research in algebraic and differential geometry. Toroidal Embedding is one of the tools used in desingularization. Therefore, Toroidal Embedding and desingularization will be the main focus of my project. In this paper, we first provide a brief introduction on Toroidal Embedding, then show an explicit construction on how to smooth a variety with singularity through Toroidal Embeddings.

Affine And Projective Planes, Abraham Pascoe May 2018

Affine And Projective Planes, Abraham Pascoe

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

In this thesis, we investigate affine and projective geometries. An affine geometry is an incidence geometry where for every line and every point not incident to it, there is a unique line parallel to the given line. Affine geometry is a generalization of the Euclidean geometry studied in high school. A projective geometry is an incidence geometry where every pair of lines meet. We study basic properties of affine and projective planes and a number of methods of constructing them. We end by prov- ing the Bruck-Ryser Theorem on the non-existence of projective planes of certain orders.

The Average Measure Of A K-Dimensional Simplex In An N-Cube, John A. Carter May 2018

The Average Measure Of A K-Dimensional Simplex In An N-Cube, John A. Carter

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Within an n-dimensional unit cube, a number of k-dimensional simplices can be formed whose vertices are the vertices of the n-cube. In this thesis, we analyze the average measure of a k-simplex in the n-cube. We develop exact equations for the average measure when k = 1, 2, and 3. Then we generate data for these cases and conjecture that their averages appear to approach nk/2 times some constant. Using the convergence of Bernstein polynomials and a k-simplex Bernstein generalization, we prove the conjecture is true for the 1-simplex and 2-simplex cases. We then develop a generalized formula for …

A Study Of Topological Invariants In The Braid Group B2, Andrew Sweeney May 2018

A Study Of Topological Invariants In The Braid Group B2, Andrew Sweeney

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Jones polynomial is a special topological invariant in the field of Knot Theory. Created by Vaughn Jones, in the year 1984, it is used to study when links in space are topologically different and when they are topologically equivalent. This thesis discusses the Jones polynomial in depth as well as determines a general form for the closure of any braid in the braid group B2 where the closure is a knot. This derivation is facilitated by the help of the Temperley-Lieb algebra as well as with tools from the field of Abstract Algebra. In general, the Artin braid group …

Divergence Of Cat(0) Cube Complexes And Coxeter Groups, Ivan Levcovitz May 2018

Divergence Of Cat(0) Cube Complexes And Coxeter Groups, Ivan Levcovitz

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

We provide geometric conditions on a pair of hyperplanes of a CAT(0) cube complex that imply divergence bounds for the cube complex. As an application, we characterize right-angled Coxeter groups with quadratic divergence and show right-angled Coxeter groups cannot exhibit a divergence function between quadratic and cubic. This generalizes a theorem of Dani-Thomas that addressed the class of 2-dimensional right-angled Coxeter groups. This characterization also has a direct application to the theory of random right-angled Coxeter groups. As another application of the divergence bounds obtained for cube complexes, we provide an inductive graph theoretic criterion on a right-angled Coxeter group's …

On Some Geometry Of Graphs, Zachary S. Mcguirk May 2018

On Some Geometry Of Graphs, Zachary S. Mcguirk

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In this thesis we study the intrinsic geometry of graphs via the constants that appear in discretized partial differential equations associated to those graphs. By studying the behavior of a discretized version of Bochner's inequality for smooth manifolds at the cone point for a cone over the set of vertices of a graph, a lower bound for the internal energy of the underlying graph is obtained. This gives a new lower bound for the size of the first non-trivial eigenvalue of the graph Laplacian in terms of the curvature constant that appears at the cone point and the size of …

Geometry And Analysis Of Some Euler-Arnold Equations, Jae Min Lee May 2018

Geometry And Analysis Of Some Euler-Arnold Equations, Jae Min Lee

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In 1966, Arnold showed that the Euler equation for an ideal fluid can arise as the geodesic flow on the group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms with respect to the right invariant kinetic energy metric. This geometric interpretation was rigorously established by Ebin and Marsden in 1970 using infinite dimensional Riemannian geometry and Sobolev space techniques. Many other nonlinear evolution PDEs in mathematical physics turned out to fit in this universal approach, and this opened a vast research on the geometry and analysis of the Euler-Arnold equations, i.e., geodesic equations on a Lie group endowed with one-sided invariant metrics. In this …

Branching Matrices For The Automorphism Group Lattice Of A Riemann Surface, Sean A. Broughton Mar 2018

Branching Matrices For The Automorphism Group Lattice Of A Riemann Surface, Sean A. Broughton

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

Let S be a Riemann surface and G a large subgroup of Aut(S) (Aut(S) may be unknown). We are particularly interested in regular n-gonal surfaces, i.e., the quotient surface S/G (and hence S/Aut(S)) has genus zero. For various H the ramification information of the branched coverings S/K -> S/H may be captured in a matrix. The ramification information, in particular strong branching, may be then be used in analyzing the structure of Aut(S). The ramification information is conjugation invariant so the matrix's rows and columns may be indexed by conjugacy classes of subgroups. The only required …

Lie Sphere Geometry And Dupin Hypersurfaces, Thomas E. Cecil

Mathematics and Computer Science Department Faculty Scholarship

These notes were originally written for a short course held at the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics, University of São Paulo, S.P. Brazil, January 9–20, 2012. The notes are based on the author’s book [17], Lie Sphere Geometry With Applications to Submanifolds, Second Edition, published in 2008, and many passages are taken directly from that book. The notes have been updated from their original version to include some recent developments in the field.

A hypersurface Mn−1 in Euclidean space Rn is proper Dupin if the number of distinct principal curvatures is constant on Mn−1 …

The Convex Body Isoperimetric Conjecture In The Plane, John Berry, Eliot Bongiovanni, Wyatt Boyer, Bryan Brown, Paul Gallagher, David Hu, Alyssa Loving, Zane Martin, Maggie Miller, Byron Perpetua, Sarah Tammen Feb 2018

The Convex Body Isoperimetric Conjecture In The Plane, John Berry, Eliot Bongiovanni, Wyatt Boyer, Bryan Brown, Paul Gallagher, David Hu, Alyssa Loving, Zane Martin, Maggie Miller, Byron Perpetua, Sarah Tammen

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

The Convex Body Isoperimetric Conjecture states that the least perimeter needed to enclose a volume within a ball is greater than the least perimeter needed to enclose the same volume within any other convex body of the same volume in Rn. We focus on the conjecture in the plane and prove a new sharp lower bound for the isoperimetric profile of the disk in this case. We prove the conjecture in the case of regular polygons, and show that in a general planar convex body the conjecture holds for small areas.

Examples Of The Birkhoff Theorem And Its Generalizations, Charles G. Torre Jan 2018

Examples Of The Birkhoff Theorem And Its Generalizations, Charles G. Torre

Tutorials on... in 1 hour or less

In this worksheet I demonstrate three versions of Birkhoff's theorem, which is a characterization of spherically symmetric solutions of the Einstein equations. The three versions considered here correspond to taking the "Einstein equations" to be: (1) the vacuum Einstein equations; (2) the Einstein equations with a cosmological constant (3) the Einstein-Maxwell equations. I will restrict my attention to 4-dimensional spacetimes.

Symmetric Criticality In General Relativity, Charles G. Torre Jan 2018

Symmetric Criticality In General Relativity, Charles G. Torre

Research Vignettes

In this worksheet I explore the local Lagrangian version of the Principle of Symmetric Criticality (PSC) due to Anderson, Fels, and Torre], which asserts the commutativity of the processes (i) of symmetry reduction (for finding group-invariant fields) and (ii) forming Euler-Lagrange equations. There are two obstructions to PSC, which I will call the Lie algebra obstruction and the isotropy obstruction. In this worksheet I will illustrate these obstructions in the General Theory of Relativity.

Geometric Serendipity, Dakota Becker Jan 2018

Geometric Serendipity, Dakota Becker

AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship

The central focus of my practice is the serendipitous exploration into geometry, symmetry, design, and color. I have found more and more that the affinity I have for hard-edge geometric abstraction is a deeper reflection of the way in which I process my thoughts and surroundings. In the past year, I have sought to challenge myself by questioning the core of my practice and pushing it to go beyond its individual elements. In this way, I seek to create work that is more than its parts. As a result, I have become more purposeful with my designs and push both …

Higher Cluster Categories And Qft Dualities, Sebastián Franco, Gregg Musiker Jan 2018

Higher Cluster Categories And Qft Dualities, Sebastián Franco, Gregg Musiker

Publications and Research

We introduce a unified mathematical framework that elegantly describes minimally supersymmetry gauge theories in even dimensions, ranging from six dimensions to zero dimensions, and their dualities. This approach combines and extends recent developments on graded quivers with potentials, higher Ginzburg algebras, and higher cluster categories (also known as m-cluster categories). Quiver mutations studied in the context of mathematics precisely correspond to the order-(m + 1) dualities of the gauge theories. Our work indicates that these equivalences of quiver gauge theories sit inside an infinite family of such generalized dualities.

3-Maps And Their Generalizations, Kevin J. Mccall

Theses and Dissertations

A 3-map is a 3-region colorable map. They have been studied by Craft and White in their paper 3-maps. This thesis introduces topological graph theory and then investigates 3-maps in detail, including examples, special types of 3-maps, the use of 3-maps to find the genus of special graphs, and a generalization known as n-maps.

I’M Being Framed: Phase Retrieval And Frame Dilation In Finite-Dimensional Real Hilbert Spaces, Jason L. Greuling Jan 2018

I’M Being Framed: Phase Retrieval And Frame Dilation In Finite-Dimensional Real Hilbert Spaces, Jason L. Greuling

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Research has shown that a frame for an n-dimensional real Hilbert space offers phase retrieval if and only if it has the complement property. There is a geometric characterization of general frames, the Han-Larson-Naimark Dilation Theorem, which gives us the necessary and sufficient conditions required to dilate a frame for an n-dimensional Hilbert space to a frame for a Hilbert space of higher dimension k. However, a frame having the complement property in an n-dimensional real Hilbert space does not ensure that its dilation will offer phase retrieval. In this thesis, we will explore and provide what necessary and sufficient …

Extensions Of The Morse-Hedlund Theorem, Eben Blaisdell Jan 2018

Extensions Of The Morse-Hedlund Theorem, Eben Blaisdell

Honors Theses

Bi-infinite words are sequences of characters that are infinite forwards and backwards; for example "...ababababab...". The Morse-Hedlund theorem says that a bi-infinite word f repeats itself, in at most n letters, if and only if the number of distinct subwords of length n is at most n. Using the example, "...ababababab...", there are 2 subwords of length 3, namely "aba" and "bab". Since 2 is less than 3, we must have that "...ababababab..." repeats itself after at most 3 letters. In fact it does repeat itself every two letters. …

Bipartite Field Theories And D-Brane Instantons, Sebastían Franco, Eduardo García-Valdecasas, Angel M. Uranga Jan 2018

Bipartite Field Theories And D-Brane Instantons, Sebastían Franco, Eduardo García-Valdecasas, Angel M. Uranga

Publications and Research

We study D-brane instantons in systems of D3-branes at toric CY 3-fold singularities. The instanton effect can be described as a backreaction modifying the geometry of the mirror configuration, in which the breaking of U(1) symmetries by the instanton translates into the recombination of gauge D-branes, which also directly generates the instanton-induced charged field theory operator. In this paper we describe the D-brane instanton backreaction in terms of a combinatorial operation in the bipartite dimer diagram of the original theory. Interestingly, the resulting theory is a general Bipartite Field Theory (BFT), defined by a bipartite graph tiling a general (possibly …

Spanning Tree Problem With Neutrosophic Edge Weights, Florentin Smarandache, Said Broumi, Assia Bakali, Mohamed Talea, Arindam Dey, Le Hoang Son

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Neutrosophic set and neutrosophic logic theory are renowned theories to deal with complex, not clearly explained and uncertain real life problems, in which classical fuzzy sets/models may fail to model properly. This paper introduces an algorithm for finding minimum spanning tree (MST) of an undirected neutrosophic weighted connected graph (abbr. UNWCG) where the arc/edge lengths are represented by a single valued neutrosophic numbers. To build the MST of UNWCG, a new algorithm based on matrix approach has been introduced. The proposed algorithm is compared to other existing methods and finally a numerical example is provided.

3d Printing Of 2d N = (0, 2) Gauge Theories, Sebastían Franco, Azeem Hasan Jan 2018

3d Printing Of 2d N = (0, 2) Gauge Theories, Sebastían Franco, Azeem Hasan

Publications and Research

We introduce 3d printing, a new algorithm for generating 2d N = (0, 2) gauge theories on D1-branes probing singular toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds using 4d N = 1 gauge theories on D3-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds as starting points. Equivalently, this method produces brane brick models starting from brane tilings. 3d printing represents a significant improvement with respect to previously available tools, allowing a straightforward determination of gauge theories for geometries that until now could only be tackled using partial resolution. We investigate the interplay between triality, an IR equivalence between different 2d N = …

A Journey To The Adic World, Fayadh Kadhem Jan 2018

A Journey To The Adic World, Fayadh Kadhem

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The first idea of this research was to study a topic that is related to both Algebra and Topology and explore a tool that connects them together. That was the entrance for me to the “adic world”. What was needed were some important concepts from Algebra and Topology, and so they are treated in the first two chapters.

The reader is assumed to be familiar with Abstract Algebra and Topology, especially with Ring theory and basics of Point-set Topology.

The thesis consists of a motivation and four chapters, the third and the fourth being the main ones. In the third …

Self-Assembly Of Dna Graphs And Postman Tours, Katie Bakewell Jan 2018

Self-Assembly Of Dna Graphs And Postman Tours, Katie Bakewell

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

DNA graph structures can self-assemble from branched junction molecules to yield solutions to computational problems. Self-assembly of graphs have previously been shown to give polynomial time solutions to hard computational problems such as 3-SAT and k-colorability problems. Jonoska et al. have proposed studying self-assembly of graphs topologically, considering the boundary components of their thickened graphs, which allows for reading the solutions to computational problems through reporter strands. We discuss weighting algorithms and consider applications of self-assembly of graphs and the boundary components of their thickened graphs to problems involving minimal weight Eulerian walks such as the Chinese Postman Problem and …

Classification Of Minimal Separating Sets In Low Genus Surfaces, J. J. P. Veerman, William Maxwell, Victor Rielly, Austin K. Williams

Consider a surface S and let M ⊂ S. If S \ M is not connected, then we say M separates S, and we refer to M as a separating set of S. If M separates S, and no proper subset of M separates S, then we say M is a minimal separating set of S. In this paper we use computational methods of combinatorial topology to classify the minimal separating sets of the orientable surfaces of genus g = 2 and g = 3. The classification for genus 0 and 1 was done …
