The etiologies of skeletal Class III malocclusion include excessive growth of mandible, deficient growth of maxilla, and the combination of both. Anterior openbite may be due to skeletal, dental, habitual, or functional problems. Mini-implant can be a reliable anchorage for maxillary molar intrusion, which facilitate anterior openbite closure by counterclockwise rotation of the mandible. However, the mandibular counterclockwise rotation may increase antero-posterior jaw discrepancy in Class III malocclusion. Therefore, surgical orthodontics is often required in the treatment of Class III malocclusion with anterior openbite. The overall prevalence of peg-shaped maxillary permanent lateral incisors was 1.8%. The occurrence rates were higher in Mongoloid (3.1%) than in black (1.5%) and white (1.3%) patients. The presence of peg lateral incisors was also a complicated esthetic issue for orthodontist. This case is a skeletal Class III malocclusion 20-years-old male. His problems were mild maxillary skeletal retrognathism combined with mandibular prognathism, anterior crossbite, peg lateral incisors, and upper arch crowding. Concurrent impaction and transposition of the maxillary anterior teeth is unusual and may present a great challenge to dental practice. Early diagnosis and elimination of impacted anterior teeth helps provide esthetic and functional outcomes. This case report describes an 18-year-old female whose teeth 13, 11 and 23 (FDI tooth numbering) had dilacerated labial impaction. Teeth 53 and 63 were retained primary teeth. The purposes of this literature review were to evaluate and compare the correction rate of posterior crossbite of different kinds of maxillary expansion. The study selection criteria included RCTs involving subjects with posterior crossbite with maxillary expansion which searched from MEDLINE. The search strategy resulted in 10 articles that fitted to the inclusion criteria from 72 searched papers. Five out of ten articles have low bias risk, which are Martina R et al. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common category of sleep-disordered breathing. The common signs of OSA include loud and irregular snoring and disturbed sleep due to the multiple awakenings. Mandibular symphysis is the critical reference for facial profile and determines the lower incisor position indirectly. It also serves as the primary consideration for diagnosis and treatment plans. This essay reviews articles relevant to the embryology and growth, morphology of mandibular symphysis, and its restrain on orthodontic tooth movement of lower incisors. Discussion mainly focused on the effectiveness of genioplasty, mandibular symphysis distraction osteogenesis, periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics on mandibular symphysis, which may breach its limitation on range of orthodontic tooth movement.

Idiopathic condylar resorption (ICR) is a well-documented but poorly understood progressive disease that affects the TMJ. ICR can result in malocclusion, facial disfigurement, TMJ dysfunction, and pain. Some cases occur spontaneously, whereas others appear during orthodontic therapy or as sequelae to orthognathic surgical procedures. It is essential for orthodontists to recognize the onset of ICR in patients as early as possible .This article discusses practical aspects of recognizing and managing ICR in orthodontic patients by a combination of orthodontic and orthognathic surgery treatment.

A 11-year-old girl came with her grandmother due to her impacted maxillary incisor. She was suggested to receive orthodontic treatment while having routine oral examination at school. After orthodontic examination & evaluation, skeletal Class III jaw relation with orthodivergent facial pattern, Class III malocclusion and impacted maxillary central incisor was diagnosed. After full mouth fixed edgewise orthodontic guiding treatment and surgical closed eruption of the impacted incisor, the maxillary central incisor was moved into a proper position. Angle Class I molar relation, acceptable overbite and overjet and well-aligned dentition was also achieved. The total treatment period was 35 months.

This is a case of a 26 year-old female who complained of mandibular prognathism and malocclusion.Extraoral view revealed a concave profile with midface deficiency, mandibular prognathism, and chin deviation to right side by 4 mm. Class III malocclusion along with bilateral posterior crossbite and severe crowding were noted. Panoramic X-ray showed #83 retained, and #43 deeply impacted approximating to the mandibular lower border with a mass of radiopacity over it. The effect of oral appliances in treating mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) patientis found to be similar to continuous positive airway pressure in a study in 1955. Oral appliances make tongue or mandible forward position to increase airway space. Mandibular advancement devices and tongue retaining devices are oral appliances used in clinic today. Long term effects of oral appliances are discussed in three parts in this article: airway, dentition and temporomadibular joint. Total airway volume increases after using oral appliances. Overbite and overjet are found decreasing. Oral appliances cannot worsen the temporomadibular joint problems.

Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) is a common method used by orthodontists to increase the transverse dimension of maxillary arch and arch perimeter, by a tooth-borne device to stretch the median palatal suture through the mechanical force. Growth modification by using removable orthopedic appliances has been commonly used in growing patients to correct maxilla-mandibular jaw discrepancy. Previous studies reported the different effects of various orthopedic appliances on the airway dimension. Low-pull headgear therapy may induce a short-term decrease of the upper airway dimension in Class II patients. Face mask therapy seems to be associated with the increase of upper airway dimension in growing Class III patients. However, mandible protruding appliances can increase the upper airway dimension, especially in the Class II patients with mandible retrusion.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) makes up approximately 75% to 80% of childhood leukemia. Longterm survivors through current medical management make orthodontic treatment available. However, the risk of these patients should be carefully evaluated. After the patient has completed all cancer therapy and has at least a 2-year event-free survival, orthodontic treatment can be started. Patients with ALL sometimes have to accept a compromised treatment result and finish the treatment earlier than normal due to the concerns of recurrence. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanical properties of Ni-Ti coated orthodontic archwires after surface modification. Universal test machine was used to measure the tensile strength of four groups of coated Ni-Ti wires and uncoated control group. Immersion test was applied for 21 days to discover whether the coating would peel off under friction and brushing after immersion. It has been more than seven decades that traditional two-dimensional (2D) image develops into threedimensional (3D) image. Due to the limited technology, 2D lateral cephalograms are traditionally used for airway assessment; however; the problem with cephalometry is that the 3D airway change can only be measured by linear measurement. Anterior open bite often combines with longer anterior facial height, higher mandibular plane angle, mandible clockwise rotation and mandible retrognathism. The facial profiles of patients with OSA ( obstructive sleep apnea syndrome) also often reveal mandible retrognathism. Therefore, it is an interesting subject that whether treating anterior open bite has the advantage of improving symptom of sleeping problem. This review article is to investigate the correlation of tooth movement in vertical dimension with airway, also investigate the influence of oral appliance height and surgery-treated open bite on airway.

Comprehensive treatment of the facial skeleton and occlusion requires an understanding of all functional variables, including the upper airway. Numerous reports have shown a causal relationship between the upper airway and respiratory mode in the development of facial morphology and malocclusion. This article reviewed the airway assessment in normal subjects during growth and development, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) subjects and malocclusion subjects.

The cases of Angle Class II Division 2 malocclusion are rare in the population. These cases are characterized by retroclined upper anteriors and deep overbite. Facial profile have relatively retrusive lips as well as prominent chins. Extraction of premolars followed by incisor and lip retraction will further retrude the lips. So decided the extraction treatment plan of these patient requires careful diagnosis. In this case report, we will discuss the considerations of extraction or non-extraction treatment of Class II division 2 malocclusion.

The ectopic eruption and impaction of maxillary permanent canines is a frequently encountered clinical problem.The diagnosis and treatment of this problem usually requires the expertise of orthodontist.In this case report,we present the treatment of a 14-year-old male patient with delaying eruption of bilateral upper permanent canine.The patient received full mouth non-extraction orthodontic treatment with surgical exposure of upper permanent canine.The patient was satisfied with the treatment outcome.

The replacement of teeth by osseointegrated implants is usually restricted to patients with completed craniofacial growth. Implant insertions in children, adolescents and young adults who we refer to as young patients are circumvented due to several unfavorable potential effects including trauma to tooth germs, tooth eruption disorders, and multidimensional restrictions of dental alveolus and skeletal craniofacial growth. The clinical and radiographic findings have clearly shown that the implants do not behave like normal erupting teeth during the development of the dentition. Patients with peg lateral incisors combined space discrepancy can be treated by either replacing or restoring the lateral incisor after space redistribution, or by removing peg lateral incisor and positioning the canine to simulate the lateral incisor. This case report describes the treatment of a 14-year-old female. Her chief complaint is upper left side canine impaction. It is also found she has bilateral peg-shaped maxillary lateral incisors. Treatment involved extraction of two maxillary lateral incisors and two mandibular second premolars. Maxillary canines and first premolars substituted for lateral incisors and canines.
