Objective: Dentofacial abnormalities, such as bimaxillary protrusion, can be distressing both socially and psychologically. The aim of this study is to identify the cephalometric features of bimaxillary protrusion and highlight the measurements that characterize bimaxillary protrusion when compared to a normal occlusion group. Materials and methods: Lateral cephalograms of 60 pretreated bimaxillary protrusion young adults were compared with 60 untreated young adults with normal occlusion. Male and female were equal in each group. Thirty-two landmarks were identified for 61 skeletal, dental and soft tissue parameters. Using clip type self-ligation bracket combined with nickel-titanium arch wires can easily relief dental crowding and achieve arch expanding for adult patients with severe dentition crowding. This 25-year-old female was diagnosed as skeletal Class III with maxillary deficiency and severe dental crowding, anterior and posterior crossbite. We used clip type self-ligation bracket with non-tooth extraction, non-surgery, and non mini-implant insertion treatment. Successfully improved facial profile and achieve the harmonious proportion of vertical facial 's appearance.

A case report describes the camouflage treatment of an adult patient with skeletal Class II jaw base relationship and moderate crowding. A 28-year-old woman presented with chief complaints of protrusive lips and upper front teeth. The clinical examination showed a convex facial profile, retrognathic mandible, excessively proclined upper and lower incisors, large overbite and overjet and a Class II division 1 malocclusion. How to achieve stability after combined orthodontic and orthognathic surgery? Many factors can affect the post-treatment stability of either intermaxillary relationship, dental occlusion or facial profile, which include pre-operative preparations, types and range of surgical procedure, amount of bone movement, types of fixation, condylar position during fixation and the ability of soft tissue adaptation. This article reviewed and summarized factors affecting the postoperative stability according to the treatment stages.

Elastomeric chains were introduced to the orthodontic profession in the 1960s’, and are now an integral part of every day practices. They are used to generate light continuous forces for correcting rotations, consolidating spaces, and retraction canines. They are inexpensive, easily applied, relatively hygienic and require little or no patient cooperation. Elastomeric chain, however, are nor without their disadvantages. When exposed to an oral environment, they absorb water and saliva, permanent stain, and suffer breakdown of internal binds leading to permanent deformation. They also experience rapid loss of force due to stress relaxation, resulting in a gradual loss of effectiveness. …

Distraction osteogenesis (DO) is a surgical procedure that uses a distractor through an osteotomy site, by applying mechanical stretching forces to produce new organization. These organizations contain skeleton, muscles, nerves, blood vessels and so on. This article reviewed the comparisons of DO with conventional guided bone regeneration (GBR) and conventional orthognathic surgery (OGS), as well as the introduction of some of the recent case reports, clinical studies and post-surgery stability in relation to the dentoalveolus, maxilla and mandible regions. Posterior complete buccal crossbite, also called scissors-bite or Brodie Bite, is usually difficult to be corrected. In most cases with the occlusion of complete buccal crossbite, the mandibular teeth are lingually tilted, and the maxillary teeth erupt past their antagonists. When using the conventional orthodontic treatment to correct the scissors-bite, extrusion of the molars and subsequent occlusal plane canting frequently occur. The etiologies of skeletal Class III malocclusion include excessive growth of the mandible, insufficient growth of the maxilla, or the combination of both. The ideal treatment for severe mandibular prognathism is a combination of orthodontic treatment with orthognathic surgery to setback the mandible. However, nonsurgical approach using mini-implant anchorage could distalize the mandibular dentition and improve the occlusion if the skeletal discrepancy is mild to moderate. The aim of this study is to evaluate the shear bond strengths of metal brackets using two different fluoridereleasing adhesives (Light bond and Enlight) activated by two photoactivation systems [a conventional halogen light-curing system (HLC), and a plasma arc light curing system (PALC)]. Methods: Forty extracted premolars were divided into four groups of ten. Stainless steel brackets were bonded to the teeth using either a halogen light with a 20-second curing time or a plasma arc light with a 4-second curing time. The treatment timing is the most important factor in the correction of skeletal Class II malocclusion. The treatment effect in contribution of mandibular growth in the circumpubertal growth period is better than that in the pre-pubertal growth period in use of no matter what kind of orthodontic appliance. This report is a case of skeletal Class II malocclusion with mandibular deficiency. By using functional appliance (Activator) and fixed orthodontic appliance in the circumpubertal growth period, the malocclusion and retruded mandibular profile had been successfully improved.

Periodontal accelerated osteogenic orthodontics (PAOO) is a clinical procedure that combines selective alveolar corticotomy, particulate bone grafting, and the application of orthodontic forces. This procedure is theoretically based on the bone healing pattern known as the regional acceleratory phenomenon (RAP). Recently, partial evidences supported that PAOO had some advantages: 1. This case report is a 31-year-old man with Angle’s class I malocclusion (ANB: 1;wits: -3mm ) , upper and lower anterior crowding, missing lower right second premolar, and ankylosis of lower right first molar (beneath occlusal plane 7 mm). Orthodontic treatment consisted of extraction of #15 (upper right second premolar), and two buccal tipping maxillary third molars ( #18 & #28). Supraerupted maxillary molars usually result from early loss of the opposing mandible molars. This may induce insufficient intermaxillary space and compromised prosthesis. The best way to deal with supraerupted maxillary molars is no doubt to intrude them. For the minor supraeruption of maxillary molars, simply wearing a posterior bite plate could apply vertical force to intrude them. But the larger supraeruption, combination with temporary anchorage device usage will supply more stable anchorage force to intrude maxillary molars back to the normal position. To manage moderate mandibular prognathism combined with anterior open bite in adult cases,the dento-alveolar growth has to be guided and carefully utilized during orthodontic treatment, especially when the patients have acceptable profile before treatment and tend to deny the needs of orthognathic surgery. Purpose: The purposes of this study was to evaluate the registration error and its reproducibility for implementation of the laser-scanned dental model images onto the CBCT scan data by using the manual 3D superimposition. Overextrusion of maxillary molars usually results from early loss of antagonistic teeth due to caries or periodontitis. Conventional techniques for molar intrusion was used multiple teeth and extraoral devices, that depended highly on patient’s cooperation and usually result in extrusion of other teeth rather than posterior intrusion. This article reviews treatment consideration, force mechanics and side effects about miniscrews for intrusion of upper molars. We also present a clinical case to confirm miniscrew treat supra-erupted upper molars successfully.

Adult patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion may have several available treatment options: (1) a combination of orthodontic treatment and orthognathic surgery. (2) camouflaged orthodontic treatment with various extraction selections. In this case report, we use miniscrew anchorage to retract mandibular incisors and control labial tipping of maxillary incisors. Not only improving dental occlusion without extraction of teeth (except for wisdom teeth) but also achieving a balanced profile in only 14 months of treatment time.

Background: Impaction of maxillary central incisors can result in aesthetic problems. The aim of this retrospective study was to examine the periodontal outcomes of impacted maxillary central incisors after surgical exposure and orthodontic extrusion compared to naturally erupted, contralateral incisors (control). Methods: Patients (N=80, 80 central incisors), who had been treated by a surgical-orthodontic approach, underwent a periodontal examination after 6 to 146 months. Introduction: Tea, lemon tea and cola are common beverage in our life. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the corrosion behavior of self-ligating and conventional metal brackets in soft drinks. Materials and Methods: Totally, 198 brackets were used. There are Damon Q (Ormco, USA), P OPA-K (TOMY, Japan) and Tenbrook one (OrthoClass, USA).They were all made of 17-4 PH stainless steel. Purpose: the purpose of this study is to evaluate mandible bone density and gender difference through three-dimensional images. The Images was captured by cone-beam computer tomography (CBCT) and transfer into DICOM format for further examination. Material and method: CBCT images were obtained from 36 males and 34 females aged from 18 to 40 years. Mandible bone density was measured in 4 sites bilaterally. Inter-gender and intra-class comparison were made to distinguish the difference of acquired data. The aims of the study were to compare the degree of demineralization and the size alteration of white spot lesions after orthodontic treatment using fluoride dentifrice or tooth mousse therapy. Twelve upper incisors with demineralized white spot lesions of eight participants were identified after fixed appliances were removed. These participants were randomly and double blindly assigned to use one of the two dentifrices (TM and FD). Purpose: To investigate the relation between the change of mandibular plane and maxillary molar intrusion with mini-implants. Materials and Methods: Twenty-eight consecutive adult patients with skeletal Class II, retrognathic mandible and high mandibular plane were included (mean age: years). The surgery-first approach in surgical orthodontic treatment is re-emerging as the preferred technique when compared to the traditional orthodontic first-approach. Despite its growing popularity, no planning protocol that offers comprehensive and accurate predictions has been described for the surgery-first approach. In this article, the authors utilize computer aided surgical simulation (CASS) to provide two planning methods for the surgery-first approach. An adult female patient aged 34 years and 8 months with Wilson’s disease, a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder, demonstrated poor chewing ability and facial asymmetry which were worsened gradually since the disease attacked her 10 years ago. She was treated by surgical orthodontics with minimal presurgical orthodontic decompensation. We designed an atypical maxillary anterior subapical osteotomy to close the maxillary incisor pontic space, retract anterior segment of the maxilla, and maintain the dental midline simultaneously. Class III malocclusion with mandibular protrusion and lateral displacement are commonly observed at orthodontic clinic. If patients don’t accept orthognathic surgery and belong to mild to moderate malocclusion, non-surgery treatment will be available. This was a 25-year-old female; her chief complaint was anterior crossbite with anterior spacing and mandibular protrusion. The diagnosis was dental and skeletal Class III malocclusion with mandibular prognathism. The patient was successfully treated with fixed orthodontic appliance by modified Multiloop Edgewise Archwire (MEAW) Technique and asymmetric elastics.
