The purposes of this literature review were to evaluate and compare the correction rate of posterior crossbite of different kinds of maxillary expansion. The study selection criteria included RCTs involving subjects with posterior crossbite with maxillary expansion which searched from MEDLINE. The search strategy resulted in 10 articles that fitted to the inclusion criteria from 72 searched papers. Five out of ten articles have low bias risk, which are Martina R et al. Posterior crossbite is a common malocclusion in the deciduous or mixed dentition. Various techniques of posterior crossbite correction have been suggested, including rapid maxillary expansion, slow expansion with a quad-helix appliance or removable expansion plate, grinding, and composite onlay. The aim of this article is to review the fabrication, clinical adjustment, advantages and disadvantages, and functions of the quad-helix appliance.

Functional appliance is often used for treatment of growing patients. If we can understand the device design and treatment mechanism of functional appliance, it can be applied to adult patients. The following text would review the functional matrix theory and composition of functional appliance, especially for the bionator. Finally, a case will be reported.
