Synthetic Elastomeric Chain– A Literature Review, Wan-Tin Lin, Hsin-Chung Cheng, Yung-Kang Shen, Yi-Jyun Chen, Chien-Feng Chen

Elastomeric chains were introduced to the orthodontic profession in the 1960s’, and are now an integral part of every day practices. They are used to generate light continuous forces for correcting rotations, consolidating spaces, and retraction canines. They are inexpensive, easily applied, relatively hygienic and require little or no patient cooperation. Elastomeric chain, however, are nor without their disadvantages. When exposed to an oral environment, they absorb water and saliva, permanent stain, and suffer breakdown of internal binds leading to permanent deformation. They also experience rapid loss of force due to stress relaxation, resulting in a gradual loss of effectiveness. …

Comparison Of Two Different Treatment Methods On White Spot Lesions After Orthodontic Treatment, Li-Ling Kao, Hsiu-Ming Hsu, Chuan-Yang Chang, Jia-Kuang Liu

The aims of the study were to compare the degree of demineralization and the size alteration of white spot lesions after orthodontic treatment using fluoride dentifrice or tooth mousse therapy. Twelve upper incisors with demineralized white spot lesions of eight participants were identified after fixed appliances were removed. These participants were randomly and double blindly assigned to use one of the two dentifrices (TM and FD). Degree of demineralization was examined using DIAGNodent pen and digital photographs were taken at bracket removal, 4 weeks and 8 weeks later. The iatrogenic injuries, which often lead to medical tangles, have been widely discussed in recent years.The areas of intraoral iatrogenic injuries in orthodontics include both hard tissues and soft tissues: tooth, alveolar bone, gingiva, oral mucosa, nerve and so on. Almost every procedure during orthodontic therapy could result in unpredictable injuries. To avoid negative effects, the clinicians should understand all causes of various iatrogenic injuries, and take measures during orthodontic treatment. This article discusses the etiologies, prevention and management of intraoral injuries, and it may help for clinicians.

Objective: Evaluation of anchorage loss following anterior segment retraction (ASR) using friction versus frictionless mechanics when mini-screws are directly and indirectly loaded using Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Material and methods: Thirty females with bimaxillary protrusion were randomly allocated into two groups, friction and frictionless. In friction group, a hook was crimped on 0.017- by 0.025-inch stainless steel wire distal to the lateral incisor and elastomeric chain rendering 160 g/side extending between the hook and mini-screw implant to complete the ASR. Background: The dimensions of the arch wire affect its stiffness and the play between the wire and bracket. Canine retraction over stiffer arch wires limits the degree of canine tipping. However, the greater the wire dimensions, the greater the resistance to sliding. Frictional resistance is known to delay tooth movement. Aim: The aim of this controlled clinical trial was to compare canine retraction rate and angulation with 0.017”X0.025” versus 0.016”X0.022” stainless steel arch wire with a power arm. 10-Minute Ebd: Preferred Analgesia For Orthodontic Tooth Movement: Acetaminophen Or Nsaids?, Ryan N. Mcgovern

This 10-Minute EBD column explores the choice between acetaminophen and NSAIDs for managing pain during orthodontic tooth movement. The author presents a scenario involving a patient's discomfort after archwire adjustment and delves into the impact of tooth movement on the periodontium. The PICO question focuses on the effectiveness of NSAIDs and acetaminophen in controlling discomfort without impeding tooth movement. The literature search reveals varying recommendations on analgesics, with some studies favoring acetaminophen. The evidence suggests that acetaminophen and short-term celecoxib are suitable choices for orthodontic analgesia. However, caution is advised in extrapolating findings from animal studies to human conditions.

Purpose: To determine what adaptations orthodontists made in their practices during the COVID-19 pandemic in response to safety recommendations and to determine which of these adaptations orthodontists plan to continue to implement after resolution of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: An original 34-question survey was sent by mail to a randomized and geographically proportionate selection of actively practicing orthodontic specialists (N = 1000). Questions asked orthodontists about the changes they made during the pandemic in four overarching categories (infection control, social distancing, appliance use, and tele-orthodontics) and whether they anticipated keeping those changes post-pandemic.
