Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The percentage change in the stroke volume index (SVI) due to the mini fluid challenge (MFC) (MFC-?SVI%) is used commonly in daily practice. However, up to 20% of patients remain in the gray zone of this variable. Thus, it was aimed to compare the MFC-?SVI% and the percentage change in the cardiac power index (CPI) due to the MFC (MFC-?CPI%) with the baseline values of the pulse pressure variation (PPV) and stroke volume variation (SVV) in terms of their abilities to predict fluid responsiveness. Materials and methods: The SVI, CPI, SVV, and PPV were recorded before 100 mL of …

Reporting The Clinical Spectrum Of Children With Igav In A Retrospective 24-Year Cohort: Influences Of Age And Sex On Clinical Presentation, Sema Yildirim, Müferet Ergüven

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Immunoglobulin A vasculitis (IgAV) is one of the most common types of vasculitis in children. The aims of this study were to investigate the clinical characteristics of the disease, and the effects of age and sex on the clinical course in children with IgAV. Materials and methods: This was a retrospective study including pediatric patients diagnosed with IgAV who attended follow-ups at the pediatric rheumatology department of a tertiary healthcare institution between January 1997 and December 2020. The patients were grouped and compared according to sex and age at diagnosis (<7 years vs. ?7 years). Results: The study included 709 children with IgAV, 392 (55.3%) of whom were male. The mean age at diagnosis was 7.9 ± 3.2 years. The most common disease onset season was autumn (31.2%). Upper respiratory infections (27.8%) were the most common predisposing factors. Gastrointestinal system (GIS), joint, and renal involvement were observed in 52.8%, 47.5%, and 17.5% of patients, respectively. Renal involvement, GIS involvement, and disease relapse were significantly more common among those diagnosed after 7 years of age compared to those diagnosed before the age of 7 (p < 0.001, p = 0.033, and p < 0.001, respectively). Scrotal involvement and subcutaneous edema were more common among those diagnosed at younger than 7 years compared to those aged ?7 years at diagnosis (p < 0.001 and p = 0.016, respectively). GIS involvement was more frequently seen in males compared to females (p = 0.046). Conclusion: It was demonstrated that being ?7 years of age at diagnosis or being a male were associated with higher likelihood of renal and GIS involvement in children with IgAV.

Background/aim: This study aimed to investigate thymoquinone (TQ), and melatonin's radioprotective effects on liver, parotid gland, brain, and testis of rats which were exposed to total body irradiation (IR). Materials and methods: Thirty adult Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups that are Group 1 (control group): total body IR only, Group 2: IR-Melatonin (10 mg/kg), Group 3: IR-TQ (10 mg/kg), and Group 4 (sham group): nothing. Total body IR dose was 6 Gy. Tissue samples were taken 90 min after IR. The measurements of malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were performed in all groups. …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: A subset of melanocytic tumors with spitzoid morphology may lead to potential inaccurate diagnosis and lack of assessment of malignancy potential. In this study, we aimed to evaluate melanocytic tumors with spitzoid morphology using conventional melanoma FISH (RREB-1, CCND1, MYB and CEP6) and 9p21 FISH (CDKN2A) probes and compare the probe results with clinical and histopathological features. Materials and methods: This study is a multicentric retrospective study including three centers, İstanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, Cerrahpaşa School of Medicine, Department of Pathology, Acıbadem University, School of Medicine, Department of Pathology and ETA Pathology Laboratory. The pathology reports in archives of these three …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The functional and oncological outcomes of zero ischemia robotic partial nephrectomy (RPN) procedures were evaluated. Materials and methods: A total of 56 patients underwent zero ischemia RPN transperitoneally, and their data were collected prospectively. Radius, exo/endophytic, nearness, anterior/posterior, location (R.E.N.A.L.) nephrometry, and PADUA scores were calculated. Patient and tumor characteristics were evaluated. Intra- and perioperative (0-30 days) complications were evaluated by Clavien classification. The change in serum creatinine, and estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFR) were evaluated during preoperative, immediate postoperative periods, and at postoperative 6th months. Results: The mean age of the patients was 52.2 ± 8.1 (27-75) years. …
