Molecular Genetics Of Breast Cancer, Emel Ergül, Ali̇ Sazci Jan 2001

Molecular Genetics Of Breast Cancer, Emel Ergül, Ali̇ Sazci

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Recent advances in molecular biology enable researchers to understand the basis of breast cancer much better and show that hereditery breast cancer may result from mutations on several specific gene loci including BRCA1, BRCA2, p53, ATM and PTEN. These genes are tumor supressor genes and although their functions are different, they are all involved in the maintenance of genomic stability after DNA damage. Mutations that impair the function of these genes may adversely affect the manner in which DNA damage is processed. It is likely that the risk of breast cancer development is increased through this mechanism. Moreover, there are …

Cold Shock Proteins, N. Nuray Ulusu, E. Ferhan Tezcan Jan 2001

Cold Shock Proteins, N. Nuray Ulusu, E. Ferhan Tezcan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

From prokaryotes to eukaryotes or from invertebrates to vertebrates, all organisms have developed various adaptive mechanisms to survive within a wide range of growth temperatures. An important part of the cold adaptation mechanism occurs at the level of the cytoplasmic membrane. Cold shock affects the membrane composition and organisation to maintain the optimum membrane function. Cold shock also affects cell division. The temperature downshift results in a growth lag. During the lag phase the organism changes the composition of the cytoplasmic membrane and synthesis sets of specific proteins called cold shock proteins or cold induced proteins.
