We aimed to compare drug utilization in hypertensive old patients and very old patients in primary care, along with the evaluation of potentially inappropriate drug prescribing. Background/aim: This study aimed to investigate the impact of blood pressure and sex on heart-vessel coupling in patients with essential hypertension via ultrasound. Materials and methods: We studied 76 patients with essential hypertension (48 males and 28 females) and 65 healthy controls (33 males and 32 females). Coupling parameters were obtained using ultrasound technology combined with brachial artery blood pressure measurement. Background/aim: The effects of AT2 receptor agonist novokinin on blood pressure, eNOS, NADPH oxidase, protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs), and Rho kinase in hypertension were investigated. Furthermore, in isolated thoracic aorta rings, contractile and dilator responses were studied. Materials and methods: To develop hypertension, L-NAME was administered intraperitoneally and salt was given with tap water (1%) for 4 weeks. In this study, the curative effect of valsartan on hypertension based on its effect on visfatin levels and lipid profiles was investigated. Materials and methods: Forty patients aged 38-60 with hypertension were included in the study. In order to determine initial visfatin levels and lipid profiles, blood samples were taken from the patients and all were started on 80-mg valsartan tablets. All patients were monitored for 12 weeks. Aim: Studies about relationships between diabetes mellitus, diabetic complications, and cognitive functions have been initiative factors for this study. We evaluated various relations between procedure of the disease, diabetic complications, and cognitive functions among diabetic subjects. Materials and methods: Type-2 diabetic patients were evaluated for their disease status, complications, and cognitive functions (by Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) test). We compared MMSE results of the patients with the control group. Results: We evaluated 75 patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus and 49 control subjects. Orientation (P = 0.006), attention and calculation (P = 0.002), and total (P < 0.001) scores of the control group were significantly greater compared to the diabetic group. We observed negative correlation between the length of disease and cognitive functions within the diabetic group. Recall scores of the diabetic subjects with 6 and less HBAIC levels were significantly greater than those with 6.1 and greater levels (P = 0.049). We observed negative relations between registration scores and retinopathy, but not between orientation and total scores and hypertension among diabetic subjects. Conclusion: Type-2 diabetes mellitus may destroy cognitive function. Length of disease, high serum HBAIC levels, hypertension, and retinopathy are significant additional risk factors. We conclude that cognitive function assessment should be routine procedure in the management of type-2 diabetes mellitus.

The effects of fasting on humans have not been adequately investigated. Ramadan fasting is a great opportunity for scientific research due to its peculiar nature. With this in mind, we conducted research on the effects of Ramadan on stroke, which is one of the most common causes of death in adults. Patients hospitalized solely for ischemic stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage were evaluated retrospectively. While apoptotic cell death has been implicated in DA cell death in Parkinson's disease, autophagy - a regulated cellular process for degrading intracellular proteins and organelles under stress - in Parkinson's disease is not known. The thalamus is one of the most vulnerable areas for intracerebral hemorrhages. In this study, we investigated the parameters of thalamic hemorrhage such as risk factors, initial complaints, neurologic findings and the prognostic effects of the presence or absence of ventricular penetration, as well as the volume and size of hematoma. A total of 57 patients with thalamic hemorrhage, whose diagnosis was confirmed by cranial computerized tomography, were evaluated. The effects of diets containing 2% and 4% calcium (Ca) on deoxycorticosteron (DOC) salt hypertension were studied in 29 male rats weighting 210-260 g. Rats were categorized into four groups: Group I: control rats (6), group II: DOC hypertensive group (n=8), group III: DOC-low Ca diet (2% CaCl 2 ) (8) and group IV: DOC-high Ca diet (4% CaCl_2 ) (n=7). The cause of reduced renal mass (RRM)-saline hypertension is not clear. In our study, it was aimed to investigate the role of vasopressin (AVP) in this type of hypertension by using selective V 1 antagonist of AVP. RRM was performed in 32 normotensive male Wistar rats under anesthesia in which we used a mixture of ketamine (130 mg/kg, i.m.) and chlorpromazine (1.3 mg/kg, i.m.). In this study, we investigated first; the possible involvement of nitric oxide and antioxidant enzyme level in the pathogenesis of essential hypertension and second we investigated serum nitrite-nitrate and antioxidant enzyme activities and lipid profiles (total, HDL and LDL cholesterol, trygliceride) to determine the relationship between these parameters in atherosclerosis. 13 patients with coronary heart disease, 18 patients with essential hypertension and 16 age-matched health subjects were taken into this study.
