Investigation Of The Effect Of Hyperthyroidism On Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress And Transient Receptor Potential Canonical 1 Channel In The Kidney, Nuri̇ye Ezgi̇ Bektur, Erhan Şahi̇n, Sedat Kaçar, Ridvan Bağci, Şeri̇fe Karakaya, Di̇lek Burukoğlu Dönmez, Varol Şahi̇ntürk

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Hyperthyroidism is associated with results in increased glomerular filtration rate as well as increased renin-angiotensin-aldosterone activation. The disturbance of Ca2+ homeostasis in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is associated with many diseases, including diabetic nephropathy and hyperthyroidism. Transient receptor potential canonical 1 (TRPC1) channel is the first cloned TRPC family protein. Although it is expressed in many places in the kidney, its function is uncertain. TRPC1 is involved in regulating Ca2+ homeostasis, and its upregulation increases ER Ca2+ level, activates the unfolded protein response, which leads to cellular damage in the kidney. This study investigated the role of TRPC1 in …

Background/aim: The objective of this experimental study was to examine the effects of epinephrine, dexmedetomidine, and clonidine added as adjuvants to bupivacaine on block onset and effect times, as well as the effects on the Na+ and Ca+2 channel gene expressions, which may indicate cell damage in the sciatic nerve cell membrane. Materials and methods: Rats were divided into five groups: Group S (sham), saline solution; Group B, bupivacaine; Group BD, bupivacaine + dexmedetomidine; Group BC, bupivacaine + clonidine; and Group BE, bupivacaine + epinephrine. For each group, 0.2 mL of local anesthetic was injected into the sciatic nerve bifurcation …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The study was designed to investigate whether local administration of a mixture composed of cepae extract, allantoin, and heparin (CAH) decreased already formed epidural fibrosis (EF) at the laminectomy site. Materials and methods: Twenty-four adult male Sprague Dawley rats were equally divided into four groups. Laminectomy was performed at the L5 level in all rats. The group 2 and group 4 rats were treated with local drug administration. While the group 1 and 2 rats were sacrificed after 6 weeks, the remaining rats were reoperated and CAH mixture was applied in group 4. The vertebral columns of all rats …

Background/aim: To investigate the efficacy of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) in the diagnosis and staging of fibrosis induced by experimental bile duct ligation (BDL). Materials and methods: Twenty-four rats were divided randomly into four groups: control, BDL - 3 days, BDL - 2 weeks, and BDL - 4 weeks. DWI was performed with b-values of 100 and 500 on the rats from control group at day zero, on the rats from the BDL - 3 days group at the end of day 3, on the rats from the BDL - 2 weeks group at the end of day 14, …

Effects Of Prenatally Exposed Diclofenac Sodium On Rat Heart Tissue:A Stereological And Histological Study, Fi̇kret Gevrek, Mi̇kai̇l Kara, Murat Çeti̇n Rağbetli̇, Hüseyi̇n Aslan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Diclofenac sodium (DS) can cross the placental barrier and affect the fetus, and its consumption during pregnancy may cause developmental malformation of embryos. This study investigates the effect of prenatally applied DS on the quantitative morphology of the adult rat heart. Materials and methods: Pregnant rats were divided into three groups (control, sham, and test). The rats in the test group were injected with DS; the control group received physiological saline (1 mL; 1 mg/kg, i.m.) from the 5th to the 20th day of pregnancy; and the rats in the sham group were not injected at all. At the …
