Effectiveness Of Ultrasonography-Guided Caudal Epidural Steroid Injection Compared To The Fluoroscopic Application, Emrullah Cem Kesi̇lmez, Kasim Zafer Yüksel, Ayşe Azak Bozan, Cengi̇zhan Yavuz

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Caudal epidural steroid injection (CESI) has been increasingly used for treating lower back pain. However, there is still significant controversy about the efficacy and safety of different imaging techniques used to guide CESI. In this context, the objective of this study is to compare the efficacies of fluoroscopy- and ultrasonography-guided CESI in patients with chronic lower back pain. Materials and methods: The population of this retrospective, observational study consisted of all consecutive patients who underwent CESI for lower back pain between 2018 and 2020. Of the 371 patients included in the study sample, 192 had undergone fluoroscopy- guided CESI …

Materials and methods: A total of 40 patients with LE were included in the present study. The patients were randomly assigned to 3 treatment groups: US (n = 13), ESWT (n = 14), and KT (n = 13) groups. Results: The visual analog scale (VAS) scores significantly decreased in all groups (P < 0.05). Grip strength significantly increased after 8 weeks in only the KT group (P < 0.05). The Patient-Rated Tennis Elbow Evaluation Scale (PRTEE) scores significantly decreased after 2 weeks and after 8 weeks in the US group and ESWT groups, and after 8 weeks in the KT group (P < 0.05). Common extensor tendon (CET) thicknesses significantly decreased after 8 weeks in only the ESWT group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The US therapy, KT, and ESWT are effective in reducing pain and improving functionality. However, none of these treatment methods were found to be superior to others in reducing the pain and improving functionality.

Background/aim: This study aimed to report invasive cribriform carcinoma (ICC) with radiological and histopathologic correlations. Materials and methods: Seventy patients with ICC were classified into two groups; pure ICC patients and patients with >50% cribriform carcinoma component were included in group 1, while patients with <50% cribriform carcinoma component were included in group 2. All patients were reviewed according to American College of Radiology (ACR) breast imaging reporting and data system (BI-RADS) lexicon of mammography (MG), ultrasonography (US), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). One-way analysis of variance tests and t-tests were used for analysis. P < 0.05 was accepted as statistically significant. Results: Eighteen patients were in group 1 and 52 were in group 2. All patients had MG and US, while 24 patients needed MRI. According to MG ACR BI-RADS lexicon evaluation, irregular shape, spiculated margin and indistinct margin, and high density were statistically significantly higher in group 2 than the other group (respectively P = 0.001, P = 0.001, and P= 0.04). Equal density was statistically significantly higher in group 1 than the other group (P = 0.008). According to US ACR BI-RADS lexicon evaluation, irregular shape, spiculated margins, angular margins, microlobulated margins, and nonparallel orientation were more common US findings in group 2 than the other group (respectively P = 0.001, P = 0.001, P = 0.003, P = 0.04, and P = 0.04). The rate of parallel orientation was higher in group 1 than the other group (P = 0.02). Conclusion: Few cases showed benign characteristics and most ICCs appear with typical features of malignancy. Radiologic features of ICC could be better understood and would be helpful for radiologists in diagnosing this rare type of malignancy.

The Prevalence Of Pleural Effusion In Pregnant Women: A Pilot Study, Ebru Di̇kensoy, Özcan Balat, Öner Di̇kensoy

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Pleural effusions are very common in general population. There are more than 50 reasons for the etiology. There is limited data on the prevalence of pleural effusions in a population of pregnant women. We prospectively screened 45 pregnant women between May and October 2006. All the pregnant women underwent thoracic ultrasonography during their routine check. Five out of 45 subjects (11%) had minimal and bilateral pleural effusion. None of the subjects was symptomatic. All of the effusions regressed without any intervention. In conclusion, the prevalence of pleural effusions is not rare during pregnancy and physicians should be aware of the …

True aneurysms of the PFA are uncommon. Rupture risk in true PFA aneurysms are extremely high (42%). Therefore a rapid evaluation and treatment planning is essential. Ultrasonography and color Doppler ultrasonography have priority in diagnosis of these cases. Angiography, CT and CT angiography are performed in conjunction with ultrasonography for planning the procedure before surgical treatment and follow-up after treatment.

Influence Of Cigarette Smoking On Thyroid Gland Volume: An Ultrasonographic Approach, Fatma Gül Aksoy, Özcan Kesi̇m

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The aim of the present prospective study was to investigate the influence of smoking on ultrasonographically determined thyroid gland volume and echo-texture in a large randomly selected group of 500 healthy subjects of both sexes from a non-iodine deficient area. An accurate ultrasonographic technique and the Brunn method were used to determine the thyroid volume of each volunteer. The examiners had no idea of the smoking habits of the volunteers. In 257 non-smokers the mean value of the right thyroid lobe volume and the left thyroid lobe volume were 7.97 ± 5.27 ml and 6,94 ± 4.82 ml respectively, whereas …

Bizarre Blood Flow Patterns Detected By Transvaginal Pulsed And Color Doppler Ultrasonography In Ectopic Pregnancies, Eyüp Eki̇ci̇, Kubilay Vi̇cdan, Muammer Doğan, Kazım Aral, Tuğrul Aydoğdu, Oya Gökmen

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The characteristics of blood flow patterns detected by transvaginal pulsed and color Doppler ultrasonography were evoluated in ectopic pregnanacies. Two hundred and fifteen patients with surgically and histopathologically confirmed ectopic preg-nancies were included in this study. Of 215 patients, 113 (52.5 %) had an ectopic trophoblastic flow. 106 of them (93.8 %)showed a typical trophoblastic flow characterized by a high-velocity and low-impedance flow, whereas 7 (6.2 %) had bizarre blood waveforms including high-impedance and reversed diastolic flow. It was concluded that although most of the cases with ectopic pregnancy demonstrate a typical flow, a wide range of flow waveforms including …

Transvaginal Color Doppler Analysis Of Benign Uterine Leiomyomas, Nuri Danişman, Eyüp Eki̇ci̇, Ahmet Z. Işik, C. Gürkan Zorlu, Oya Gökmen

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

In this study, the blood flow velocity waveforms of the leiomyoma, uterine artery and myometrium with color doppler ultrasound were analyzed in patients with postoperative diagnosis of benign uterine leiomyomas and 15 healthy volunteers as a control group were enrolled into the study. The lowest RI and PI values obtained from uterine leiomyomas were 0.39 and 0.93. Mean RI and PI values obtained from uterine leiomyomas were 0.39 and 0.93. Mean RI of mometrial blood flow was 0.57, while mean PI was 0.98. These measurements were done by using the color flows that were obtained from either center visualized and …
