Data on the prevalence of allergic diseases in children with proven drug allergies are limited. We aim to evaluate thefrequency of allergic comorbidity in children with proven common drug allergies.Materials and methods: Children with drug hypersensitivity confirmed by diagnostic allergy tests at our center between January 2010and December 2020 were screened retrospectively. Patients with the most common drug allergies (due to antibiotics, nonsteroidalantiinflammatory drugs [NSAIDs], and antiepileptic drugs) were selected for analysis. Age, sex, the culprit drug, initial reactioncharacteristics, diagnostic test results, and the study physician who diagnosed concomitant allergic diseases were noted. Results: A total of 168 patients (boys, 51.2%) …

Characteristics of asthma in the elderly population is not well-known. The aim of the present study was to evaluateasthma in the elderly population, to compare disease characteristics between patients diagnosed <60 (aged asthma) and ≥60 (elderlyasthma) years of age.Materials and methods: The study was a prospective, multicenter, cross-sectional type. A questionnaire was filled out to patients 60years of age and over, that have been followed for asthma for at least 3 months. Asthma Control Test (ACT), eight-item MoriskyMedication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8) was filled out, inhaler device technique was assessed. Results: A total of 399 patients were included from 17 tertiary care centers across the country. Mean age was 67.11 years and 331 (83%)were female. The age at asthma diagnosis was ≥60 in 146 (36.6%) patients. Patients diagnosed ≥60 years were older (p < 0.001), hadhigher education level (p < 0.001), more commonly had first-degree relative with asthma (p = 0.038), asthma related comorbidities(p = 0.009) and accompanying rhinitis/rhinosinusitis (p = 0.005), had better asthma control (p = 0.001), were using less controllermedications (p = 0.014). Inhaler technique was correct in 37% of the patients with no difference in between the groups. Treatmentcompliance was better in elderly asthma patients (p < 0.001). In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, having well-controlledasthma (odds ratio = 1.61, CI = 1.04–2.51), and high medication adherence rate (odds ratio = 2.43, CI = 1.48–4.0) were associated withbeing in the elderly asthma group. Conclusion: The characteristics of asthma are different among patients aged 60 years and over which seems to be related to onset age ofasthma. In our cohort, the elderly asthma patients had higher education level, and treatment adherence and asthma control was better.Patients diagnosed ≥60 years of age did not have more severe disease.

Inflammatory and immune cells, such as eosinophils, macrophages, and neutrophils, generate more reactive oxygen species in patients with asthma than they do in healthy individuals, and oxygen radicals contribute to tissue injury in asthma. We aimed to measure total oxidant status (TOS) and antioxidant status (TAS) in order to assess oxidative and antioxidative capacity. Eosinophil cationic protein (ECP), total IgE, and eosinophils (%) were measured to evaluate the level of inflammation. Materials and methods: The study included 56 non-smoking asthma patients that were followed-up at the respiratory disease and allergy outpatient clinics, where they received ongoing treatment for 5 months …

Aim: Bronchial mucosal inflammation is one of the major characteristics of atopic asthma. Th2 activation and the related cytokine profile, eosinophil activation and infiltration play the main role in the pathogenesis of atopic asthma. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the activation and RANTES (regulated on activation, normal T-cell expressed and presumably secreted) expression of peripheral blood lymphocytes of non-atopic and atopic asthmatic patients. Materials and Methods: CD3, CD4, CD8, CD16, CD23, CD25, CD45RA and CD45RO expressions were determined in 22 asthma patients and 20 healthy control subjects by flow cytometry, and RANTES levels were measured by ELISA. …

Aims: Airway remodelling is a characteristic feature of asthma and is a dynamic process involving extracellular matrix (ECM) production and its degradation. In this regard, the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their specific inhibitors known as tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) have been shown to be important in this process. In the present study, transforming growth factor (TGF)-\beta, MMP-2, MMP-9 and TIMP-1 levels in serum samples of children with stable asthma and healthy controls were evaluated to determine whether these levels show any difference between asthmatic and healthy children and whether or not these levels change with atopic status. Materials and …

Twenty-five children with mild to moderate atopic asthma and 25 nonatopic children as controls were enrolled in the study. Asthmatic children were treated with montelukast, 5 mg tablets, for one month. Serum paraoxonase, malondialdehyde and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels were measured before and after treatment. Serum paraoxonase and paraoxonase/HDL ratios were significantly increased after montelukast treatment. …
