Horner´S Syndrome Post-Excision Of A Huge Cervical Sympathetic Chain Schwannoma, Sedat Aydin, Ari̇f Şanli, Ömer Taşdemi̇r, Ayli̇n Ege Gül

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Schwannoma of the cervical sympathetic chain is a rare nerve tumor. These lesions typically present as an asymptomatic neck mass and are easily mistaken for a carotid body tumor during the initial work-up. In this report, a rarely seen huge cervical sympathetic chain schwannoma case, who experienced partial Horner´s syndrome postoperatively, is presented. We report a case of schwannoma on the cervical sympathetic chain, which to our knowledge is the largest reported in the current literature.

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aim: Most of the lipids of the skin surface come from the sebaceous glands, which secrete an oily substance called sebum. Some of the sebum lipids are synthesized by sebaceous cells while some are reported to be derived from the plasma. The role of blood lipoproteins in sebum secretion rate and composition is unclear. To this end, excretion rate and composition of skin surface lipids in normo- and type IV hyperlipoproteinemic adult male subjects were compared. Materials and Methods: Quantitative analysis of skin surface lipids of subjects with type IV hyperlipoproteinemia (n:21) and normolipoproteinemia (n:15) was performed by three successive …

Effect Of Montelukast Treatment On Serum Paraoxonase Activity In Asthmatic Children, Murat Can, A. Görkem Mungan, Şerefden Açikgöz, Bi̇rol Yüksel, Selda Demi̇rtaş, Nazan Tomaç

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Montelukast, widely used in the treatment of asthma, is a selective and potent oral cysteinyl leukotriene-1 receptor antagonist. In this study, we investigated the effects of montelukast on oxidative stress and antioxidant defense in childhood asthma by measuring malondialdehyde and the paraoxonase activity. Twenty-five children with mild to moderate atopic asthma and 25 nonatopic children as controls were enrolled in the study. Asthmatic children were treated with montelukast, 5 mg tablets, for one month. Serum paraoxonase, malondialdehyde and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels were measured before and after treatment. Serum paraoxonase and paraoxonase/HDL ratios were significantly increased after montelukast treatment. …

Brain Perfusion Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography Findings In A Patient With Aicardi Syndrome, Mustafa Aydin, Tansel Ansal Balci, Ni̇met Kabakuş

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aicardi syndrome is a rare X-linked dominant genetic disorder characterized by infantile spasms, agenesis or hypogenesis of the corpus callosum, and chorioretinal lacunae. There remain many unresolved questions regarding the clinical features of this disorder. Recent advancements in neuroimaging techniques have allowed us to obtain information about brain development and perfusion. Thus, we present herein the brain single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) findings in a 15-month-old female with Aicardi syndrome, which revealed that perfusion had shifted from the posterior to anterior regions. Furthermore, the right temporal lobe was not visualized, while significant hypoperfusion was determined on the occipital regions and …

Cobalamin Deficiency During Pregnancy Expressed As Elevated Urine Methylmalonic Acid Levels Determined By A Photometric Assay, Osman Meti̇n İpçi̇oğlu, Mustafa Gültepe, Ömer Özcan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aim: Deficiency of cobalamin and folate during pregnancy is associated with megaloblastic anemia. Lower levels of folate and vitamin B12 were reported in mothers whose offspring had neural tube defects compared to unaffected controls. Increased methylmalonic acid (MMA) levels are a sensitive indicator of mild vitamin B12 deficiency and elevated homocysteine levels denote vitamin B12 or folate deficiency. We aimed to evaluate cobalamin state in pregnancy by using urine MMA levels determined by an economic spectrophotometric method. Materials and Methods: For this cross-sectional study, plasma total homocysteine (tHcy), serum folate and vitamin B12, and urine MMA levels were measured in …

Anesthesia For An Adult Patient With Congenital Diaphragmatic Eventration, Hale Yarkan Uysal, Solmaz Günal, Ahmet Ş. Uyar, Hülya Başar Jan 2007

Anesthesia For An Adult Patient With Congenital Diaphragmatic Eventration, Hale Yarkan Uysal, Solmaz Günal, Ahmet Ş. Uyar, Hülya Başar

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Congenital diaphragmatic eventration is an uncommon condition in adults and is defined as an abnormal elevation of the diaphragm. In adults, diaphragmatic eventration causes respiratory impairment that is associated with severe dyspnea, orthopnea and hypoxia. Most of the symptomatic patients may survive with supportive therapy without any need for surgical correction, though they are at risk of spontaneous diaphragm rupture. Spontaneous diaphragmatic rupture may develop in a patient with diaphragmatic eventration as a result of any event that leads to increase in intraabdominal pressure. In this case report, we present the anesthetic management of an adult patient with congenital diaphragmatic …

Effect Of Different Drugs Influencing Monoamine Neurotransmission On Haloperidol-Induced Catalepsy In Mice, Omar Mohamed Abdel-Salam, Ayman Ragab Baiuomy

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aim: Catalepsy occurs following high dopamine D2 receptor blockade by the typical antipsychotic drug haloperidol. The present study investigated the effect of different drugs affecting monoamine neurotransmission in this animal model of Parkinson's disease in mice. Materials and Methods: Drugs were intraperitoneally administered with haloperidol 30 min prior to testing. Catalepsy was measured using the bar test. Results: Catalepsy duration was reduced by the non-selective noradrenaline and serotonin reuptake inhibitors imipramine and amitriptyline (21.1% and 22.3% reduction by 20 mg/kg imipramine and amitriptyline, respectively). Catalepsy duration was increased by the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, and citalopram and …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

A 49-year-old male, who had undergone mitral valve replacement with mechanical cardiac valve and coronary arterial by-pass grafting six years previously, was admitted to our hospital with acute dyspnea. Transesophageal echocardiography revealed that one of the leaflets of the prosthetic valve was entirely immobilized in the closed position, and an immobile soft tissue mass was detected on the ventricular side of the obstructed leaflet. We performed re-replacement using a 29-mm mechanical prosthetic St. Jude valve under deep hypothermic circulatory arrest via right atrial thoracotomy. Postoperative course was uneventful, and the patient was discharged with oral anticoagulant therapy on day 7 …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Metformin is an oral hypoglycemic agent that is commonly used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. While metformin-associated metabolic acidosis is a widely recognized side effect of this drug, metformin-induced hepatotoxicity has been rarely reported in the literature. We present herein the case of a 52-year-old male in whom metformin-associated lactic acidosis and metformin-induced hepatotoxicity developed.
