Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

In this study we investigated nitric oxide metabolites nitrate+nitrite and lipid peroxidation product (malonyldialdehyde: MDA) related to the pathogenesis of eclampsia and intrauterine growth retarded (IUGR) pregnancy. Plasma nitrate+nitrite levels were higher in the eclamptic (31.6 ± 16.7 µmol/L p < 0.001) and IUGR (24.3 ± 9.5 µmol/L p < 0.005) groups than in the control group (18.8 ± 6.9 µmol /L). Plasma MDA levels were higher in the eclamptic group (5.5 ± 2.5 nmol/ml (p < 0.05) but not significantly different in the IUGR (3.4 ± 2.4 nmol/ml p > 0.05) group than control group (3.0 ± 1.3 nmol/ml). In addition, the plasma nitrite+nitrate and MDA levels in the eclamptic group were higher than in the IUGR group (p < 0.05). These variations could play different roles in the pathogenesis of eclampsia and IUGR pregnancy.

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of NO in the pathogenesis of lung injury associated with pancreatitis, and the relation between malondialdehyde (MDA) and myeloperoxidase (MPO). Forty Wistar male rats were divided into control or pancreatitis groups, and treated with saline, L-arginine (100 mg/kg i.v.), NO donor, or N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) (10 mg/kg i.v.), an inhibitor of NO synthase. Pancreatitis was induced in rats intravenously via the administration of cerulein (10 µg/kg/h) for 4 h). Eight hours after the induction of acute pancreatitis (AP), amylase and lipase in plasma significantly increased in all animals in …

Nitric Oxide I: Advances In The Measurements For Clinical Applications, Ayşe Baysal

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Nitric oxide (NO) is a colorless gas with high affinity to ferrous hemoproteins. This simple molecule is a powerful messenger in the body. This study reviews a literature search using keywords and abstracts in English through Medline. Recent advances in the therapeutic uses of inhaled nitric oxide in lung diseases and other pathologic states urges the efficient and convenient use of nitric oxide in hospital practice. In addition, methods of inhaled nitric oxide delivery, chemiluminescence and electrochemical analyzers were reviewed. The performance characteristics of different equipment were compared. The novel methods of nitric oxide measurements that utilize simple and cheaper …

The formation of nitric oxide (NO), a free radical, increases in liver disease, where the L-arginine-nitric oxide (L- arg-NO) pathway is activated by the increased levels of cytokines and endotoxins. In this study, we investigated the relationship between the L-arg-NO pathway and chronic active hepatitis and cirrhosis, which are classified as chronic liver disease. We determined the serum levels of nitrite and nitrate, the end products of the L-arg-NO pathway, in patients with chronic liver disease and compared them with the control group levels. Total nitrite produced by the reduction of nitrate to nitrite in the presence of nitrate reductase …
