Background/aim: To explore the dermatological lesions associated with chronic pruritus in patients who were followed up at our clinic for type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Background/aim: The aim of this study was to compare renal and pancreatic apparent diffusion-coefficient (ADC) values of diabetic patients and control subjects and to examine their potential association with several diabetes-related clinical parameters. Materials and methods: A total of 80 sex- and age-matched patients were included in the study. Of them, 40 were patients with type 2 diabetes and 40 were nondiabetic participants. Assessment Of Erythrocyte Morphology In Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Pilotstudy Of Electron Microscopy-Based Analysis In Relation To Healthy Controls, Tülay Mortaş, Şenay Arikan Durmaz, Şaban Cem Sezen, Yasemi̇n Savranlar

Background/aim: The present study aimed to assess erythrocyte morphology in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus patients using scanning electron microscopy. Materials and methods: In total, 30 patients admitted to endocrine outpatient clinics were included in the study. The patients were divided into two groups according to their fasting blood glucose levels: type 2 diabetes mellitus (n = 15, fasting blood glucose levels ≥ 126 mg/dL) and control (n = 15, fasting blood glucose levels < 99 mg/dL). The patient's demographic characteristics, haemoglobin A1c levels, and scanning electron microscopy findings regarding erythrocyte morphology were recorded. Results: There was no significant difference between the control and type 2 diabetes mellitus group in terms of the participants' age (51.13 ± 8.53 vs. 50.33 ± 8.72 years, p = 0.8) and the male/female ratio (9/6 vs. 9/6). In the control group, discocytes were abundant, echinocytes were rare, and spherocytes were absent. On the other hand, discocytes were less common and echinocyte-shaped erythrocytes were more common in the type 2 diabetes mellitus group than in the control group. In addition, spherocytes were detected in the type 2 diabetes mellitus group. Moreover, the diameter of discocytes was significantly lower (p = 0.014), and blood glucose and haemoglobin A1c levels were significantly higher (p < 0.05 for both) in the type 2 diabetes mellitus group than in the control group. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that high glucose levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients lead to significant alterations in erythrocyte morphology, including decreased erythrocyte deformability and the formation of echinocytes and spherocytes due to eryptosis. The possibility of decreased erythrocyte deformability due to excessive eryptosis may disturb microcirculation in newly diagnosed, treatment-naïve type 2 diabetes mellitus patients who do not have any complications.

Salivary Glucose And Antioxidant Defense Markers In Type Ii Diabetes Mellitus, Sayeeda Mussavira, Mala Dharmalingam, Bindhu Omana Sukumaran

To evaluate salivary antioxidant defense markers, their correlation with salivary glucose, and glycemic status in type II diabetes mellitus (DM). Materials and methods: The study included 53 diabetic patients and 40 healthy subjects. Salivary glucose, blood glucose, and uric acid (UA) were determined by specific enzymatic methods. Total antioxidant activity (AOA), glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and total protein were determined spectrophotometrically. Results: Salivary UA (3.12 vs. 1.89 mg/dL), GSH (47 vs. 11.92 µg/mL), and total protein (375.12 vs. 202.23 mg/dL) were significantly higher (P < 0.001; r = 0.455, 0.735, 0.498 respectively) and AOA (653.1 vs. 897.3 µmol/L) was significantly lower in the DM group (P < 0.001, r = -0.431) compared to healthy controls. Among the antioxidant enzymes, CAT was significantly lower (1214 vs. 9468.9 kat) in the DM group (P < 0.001, r = -0.886). Spearman correlation analyses within the diabetic group showed a strong positive association between salivary glucose and blood glucose (P < 0.001, r = 0.9), salivary glucose and GSH, and salivary glucose and UA. Salivary glucose showed a negative correlation with AOA and CAT (P = 0.008, r = -0.447) in the diabetic group. Conclusion: Findings of this study, showing a strong correlation between salivary glucose and blood glucose as well as changes in antioxidant components in the DM group, suggest that saliva can be used for the diagnosis and management of DM.

This study was designed to investigate the function of outer hair cells and medial olivocochlear efferents in type II diabetes mellitus (DM). Materials and methods: There were 50 patients with type II DM and 51 age- and sex-matched healthy controls included in the study. Both groups were compared in terms of transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs), distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs), and contralateral suppression of TEOAE. Results: Pure tone thresholds of the patients with type II DM were significantly higher than in the controls (P < 0.05). The TEOAE amplitudes at 1 kHz and at 1.5, 2, 3, 4, and 6 kHz signal-to-noise ratio amplitudes on DPOAE testing were significantly lower in the patients than controls (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the type II DM and control groups regarding contralateral suppression test results of TEOAEs. Conclusion: Type II DM seems to impact the auditory system at the cochlear level by affecting the functions of outer hair cells, and it results in elevation of the thresholds on audiometry and a decrease in the amplitudes of otoacoustic emissions.

This study investigated the value of HbA1c as a screening and diagnostic test for diabetes mellitus (DM) in high-risk Turkish individuals. Materials and methods: A total of 295 participants were successfully screened. Patients were divided into 4 groups based on their oral glucose tolerance test results, according to criteria put forth by the American Diabetes Association; 120 (40.7%) had normoglycemia, 44 (14.9%) had DM, 62 (21%) had impaired fasting glucose, and 69 (23.4%) had impaired glucose tolerance. To determine the plasma prevalence and characteristics of diabetic retinopathy (DR) among Pakistani diabetic patients in the Faisalabad region. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major cause of avoidable blindness worldwide. People with DR are 25 times more likely to become blind than nondiabetics. Materials and methods: The incidence of retinopathy was determined in 1524 people with diabetes during April 2008 and January 2009.
