Importance Of Calcium, Beri̇van Tandoğan, N. Nuray Ulusu Jan 2005

Importance Of Calcium, Beri̇van Tandoğan, N. Nuray Ulusu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body. Calcium regulates many cellular processes and has important structural roles in living organisms. Skeletal muscle structure and function, polymerisation of fibrin and the conduction of impulses in the nervous system are regulated by calcium. Calcium is an important intracellular messenger in protozoa, plants, and animals. Calcium-transporting systems which are located in the plasma membrane and in the organelles, regulate the ionic concentration of calcium in various compartments according to the different demands of the physiological cycle and these systems upregulate calcium entry by the action of several hormones and calcium binding …

Sister chromatid exchange (SCE) and chromosomal aberration (CA) in peripheral lymphocytes have been widely used in assessing exposure to mutagens and carcinogens. One of the extensively studied genotoxins is benzo[a]pyrene (BaP). The aim of the present study was to examine the ability of BaP to induce different individual cytogenetic response measured by SCE and CA frequency. The possible influence of genetic polymorphism was also taken into account, by including donors representing positive or null glutathione S-transferase M1 (GSTM1) genotypes. SCEs and CAs were analyzed from 72-h whole-blood lymphocyte cultures of 16 GSTM1 positive and 15 GSTM1 null donors after treatment …

Quality Control Studies On Conventional Carbamazepine Tablets Available On The Turkish Drug Market, Tansel Çomoğlu, Nurşi̇n Gönül

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Carbamazepine (CBZ) is a widely used antiepileptic drug. It is used to control grandmal seizure as well as in the treatment of neuralgia. The drug is characterised by slow and irregular gastrointestinal absorption due to its low water solubility. In clinics, for conventional dosage forms of CBZ, single daily dosing is insufficient; effective CBZ level is provided by multiple drug administration. Multiplicity of dosage causes inconsistent plasma CBZ levels leading to side effects because of narrow therapeutic and toxic levels. In this study, quality controls of different conventional CBZ tablets which are commercially available on the Turkish drug market were …

A New Diagnostic System In Cancer Research: Bioluminescent Imaging (Bli), Z. Günnur Di̇kmen, Ginelle Gellert, Paki̇ze Doğan, Ralph Mason, Peter Antich, Edmond Richer, Woodring E. Wright, Jerry W. Shay

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Bioluminescent imaging (BLI) is particularly well suited for imaging small animals, and it can be readily used by scientists who are already routinely using the luciferase gene as a reporter in cell-based assays. This strategy relies on ATP and an O_2 dependent photochemical reaction between luciferin and luciferase, resulting in the release of photons from only live cells. In BLI, the intensity of the light detected by the device is proportional to the intensity of light emitted and the relationship is quantitative. This study was performed to determine the sensitivity of BLI for the imaging of lung metastasis and breast …

An Overview Of Keratinocyte Carcinoma And Prospective Study On The Accuracy Of The Surgeon’S Diagnosis Of Keratinocyte Carcinoma, Nesri̇n Tan Başer, Nurten Yavuz, Ahmet Terzi̇oğlu, Gürcan Aslan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

This article concerning the rate of accurate diagnosis of keratinocyte carcinoma is reported by experienced surgeons. Keratinocyte carcinoma (KC) has been recently used in order to define basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Although an histopathologic analysis is standard for diagnosis, clinical diagnosis is still important for the choice of proper treatment. In this prospective study, 204 lesions were excised following clinical pre-diagnosis of keratinocyte carcinoma. The lesions were excised from the proper surgical limit for clinical diagnosis and sent for histopathologic examination. We have seen that we frequently confuse BCC s and SCC s with actinic keratosis. According …

Evaluation Of Plasma Protein C Antigen, Protein C Activity And Thrombomodulin Levels In Type 2 Diabetic Patients, Berna Aslan, Nezaket Eren, Şebnem Ci̇ğerli̇, Fatma Müldür, Ni̇hal Yücel

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The imbalance between coagulation and fibrinolysis leads to vascular complications in diabetics. In our study, we have investigated the effects of the protein C-thrombomodulin system as a cause of diabetic vascular complications. Whereas PC-Ag levels were lower, thrombomodulin (TM) levels of diabetics were higher than that of the controls (P < 0.001, P < 0.001 respectively). Furthermore, patients were divided into three groups according to their urinary albumin excretion (UAE). Group 1, 2 and 3 consisted of 27 patients with UAC £ 30 µg/ml, 16 patients with UAC in range 30-140 µg/ml, 3 patients with UAC >140 µg/ml, respectively. Plasma PC-Ag levels were significantly decreased in group 1 and 2 with respect to controls (P < 0.01, P < 0.01). Plasma TM concentrations were significantly increased in group 1, 2 and 3 compared with the control group (P < 0.001, P < 0.01, P < 0.01). Patients were also divided into two groups according to the duration of their illness; patients whose diabetic age < 10 years (Group A) and whose diabetic age > 10 years (Group B). In both groups, PC-Ag levels were lower and TM levels higher than that of the control group (P < 0.01, P < 0.01; P < 0.001, P < 0.001 respectively). There was no significant difference between group A and B in PC-Ag levels (P > 0.50) but a significant difference in TM levels (P < 0.001).

Salivary Malondialdehyde Levels In Patients With Oral Leukoplakia, Yegane Güven, Meral Ünür, Kivanç Bektaş, Ezel Uslu, Ahmet Belce, Erdi̇nç Demi̇rez, Şule Can

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Since leukoplakia is a premalignant condition, it is evident that an effective means of control would contribute to reducing the mortality and morbidity of oral cancer. The reactivity of free radicals and singlet oxygen is believed to be an important factor in the pathogenesis of many degenerative diseases including carcinogenesis. Reactive free radicals may damage cells by induction of lipid peroxidation of the polyunsaturated fatty acids. Buege and Aust's method was used for lipid peroxidation analysis. One way of estimating free radical activity and lipid peroxidation is to determine the concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) in the body fluids. MDA concentration …
