Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: There is no specific marker that can be applied to determine the severity of Behçet’s disease. The aim of this study is to investigate the potential of C-reactive protein (CRP)/albumin (CAR) ratio as a tool for assessing the severity of Behçet’s disease.Materials and methods: A retrospective crosssectional study was conducted by examining hospital archives. The CRP and albumin levels of Behçet’s disease patients who presented to our dermatology clinic over a three-year period from February 2020 to February 2022 were included, along with the identical laboratory parameters in the control group. Serum And Urine Interferon-Inducible Protein 10, Galectin-9, And Siglec-1 As Biomarkers Of Disease Activity In Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Şafak Mi̇ri̇oğlu, Suzan Çinar, Ömer Uludağ, Erdem Gürel, Sibel Varelci̇, Yasemin Özlük, Işın Kiliçaslan, Yasemin Yalçinkaya, Halil Yazici, Ahmet Gül, Murat İnanç, Bahar Artim Esen

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: In this prospective study, we aimed to investigate the association of serum (s) and urine (u) IP-10, galectin-9, and SIGLEC-1 with disease activity in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).Materials and methods: Sixty-three patients with active SLE (31 renal, 32 extrarenal) were included. Thirty patients with inactive SLE (15 renal, 15 extrarenal), 17 with renal active AAV, and 32 healthy volunteers were selected as control groups. Serum and urine IP-10, galectin-9, and SIGLEC-1 were tested using ELISA.Results: Levels of sIP-10 (p = 0.046), uIP-10 (p < 0.001), sGalectin-9 (p = 0.03), and uSIGLEC-1 (p = 0.006) were significantly higher in active SLE group compared to the inactive SLE; however, no differences were detected in the comparison of uGalectin-9 (p = 0.18) and sSIGLEC-1 (p = 0.69) between two groups. None of the biomarkers discriminated patients with active renal SLE from active extrarenal SLE. ROC analyses revealed an AUC of 0.63 (0.52–0.73) for sIP-10, 0.78 (0.68–0.86) for uIP-10, 0.64 (0.53–0.74) for sGalectin-9, and 0.68 (0.57–0.77) for uSIGLEC-1 in discriminating disease activity in SLE, which did not outperform C3 (0.75, 0.64–0.84) and C4 (0.72, 0.61–0.82). sIP-10 (p = 0.001), uIP-10 (p = 0.042), and uGalectin-9 (p = 0.009) were significantly increased in patients with active renal SLE compared to active renal AAV. sGalectin-9 (p < 0.001) and sIP-10 levels (p = 0.06) were decreased after 8 (5–22.5) months of treatment. Conclusion: sIP-10, uIP-10, sGalectin-9, and uSIGLEC-1 reflect global disease activity in SLE but do not outperform C3 and C4. sIP-10 and uIP-10 may be specific for active SLE compared to active AAV. sIP-10 and sGalectin-9 might be valuable in monitoring response after treatment.

Background/aim: Obesity is a chronic metabolic disease involving dysregulation of fat metabolism that affects 13% of the world’s population. Obesity has been linked to dyslipidemia with a lot of complication, including stroke, chronic kidney disease, fatty liver disease, and so on. One of the natural resources that have several potential effects including anticholesterol, antiobesity, and antidyslipidemia is the butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea/CT). CT’s petal has been found to contain high levels of anthocyanins and tannins that can inhibit the biosynthesis of cholesterol and lipid. This study aims to investigate the antiobesity and antidyslipidemic effects of Clitoria ternatea extract (CTE).Materials and …

The Right Ventricle Outflow Tract Systolic Function Could Predict The Severity Of The Cirrhosis, İbrahim Dönmez, Güray Can, Emrah Acar Jan 2024

The Right Ventricle Outflow Tract Systolic Function Could Predict The Severity Of The Cirrhosis, İbrahim Dönmez, Güray Can, Emrah Acar

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The distinctive liver framework is converted into structurally abnormal nodules as a consequence of tissue fibrosis in cirrhosis. Cardiac dysfunction in cirrhosis was described, and the term “cirrhotic cardiomyopathy (CCM)” was coined to describe this syndrome. Recent research has shown that the contractile characteristics of the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) have a significant impact on right ventricular functions. The right ventricular outflow tract-systolic excursion is an important systolic function marker of RVOT (RVOT-SE). There has yet to be published research on RVOT function in cirrhotic patients. We looked at the relationship between cirrhosis severity and the RVOT-SE.Materials and methods: …

The aim of this study is to evaluate the baseline F18-FDG PET/CT findings of individuals diagnosed with giant cellarteritis (GCA) and to explore its association with clinical findings and classification criteria.Materials and methods: We analysed data from patients who underwent F18-FDG PET/CT scans to investigate large vessel (LV)involvement between 2010 and 2019. Only patients with a clinical diagnosis of GCA and at least 6 months of follow-up were included. We compared initial clinical features and laboratory findings based on the presence of LV vasculitis on PET/CT and the maximumstandard uptake value (SUVmax) of vascular territories. Results: Twenty-nine patients (median age at diagnosis: …

Extracorporeal blood purification (EBP) therapies have shown promise as potential rescue treatments for patientswith septic shock. However, precise evidence regarding their effectiveness is lacking. This case-control study aimed to evaluate the 28-day survival benefit of a resin cartridge-based EBP therapy compared to conventional therapies in patients with septic shock.Materials and methods: The study sample was collected retrospectively from the medical records of patients admitted to the intensivecare unit (ICU) between 2015 and 2020. The study included patients with septic shock aged ≥18 years who had ICU stays >96 h andexcluded those lost to follow-up by 28 days or readmitted. First, …

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, and is frequently exposed to injuries. The applied surgical treatments, protection of the shoulder after surgery, care in the use of the shoulder in activities of daily living (ADLs) and gradual exercise programs are all vital to the recovery process. The present study investigates the effect of video-assisted training (VAT) on upper extremity complications and functions after rotator cuff repair (RCR).Materials and method: Included in this prospective, parallel two-armed, randomized controlled study were an experimental group (n: 24) that received VAT detailing early postoperative care for RCR and instructions on …

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep-related breathing disorder in children. Determination of riskfactors for the development of OSA is essential for early diagnosis and treatment of the disease and decreases the risk of negativeconsequences. This study aimed to investigate the predictive values of Mallampati score, tonsillar size, and BMI z-score in the presenceand severity of OSA in children.Materials and methods: This prospective cross-sectional study included 114 children with OSA symptoms. All children were assessedby BMI z-score, Mallampati score, and tonsillar size and underwent overnight polysomnography. They were consecutively selected andassigned to 4 groups as follows: Group 1 included …
