Derivation Of An Age And Weight Handicap For The 5k Run, Paul M. Vanderburgh, Lloyd L. Laubach Mar 2007

Derivation Of An Age And Weight Handicap For The 5k Run, Paul M. Vanderburgh, Lloyd L. Laubach

Health and Sport Science Faculty Publications

The adverse effect of increasing age and/or body weight on distance run performance has been well documented. Accordingly, nearly all five kilometer (5K) road races employ age categories and, sometimes, a heavier body weight classification. Problems with such conventions include small numbers of runners within older age categories and the advantage given to the lightest runners within each weight category. We developed a 5K Handicap (5KH), a model that calculates an adjusted run time based on the inputs of actual 5K run time, age, and body weight for men and women. This adjusted time, then, can be compared between runners …

Herodicus, The Father Of Sports Medicine, Anastasios D. Georgoulis, Irini-Sofia Kiapidou, Lamprini Velogianni, Nikolaos Stergiou, Arthur Boland

Journal Articles

Herodicus (fifth century bc) is the first person in the history of medicine who actually combined sports with medicine. He used to be a sports teacher, who later studied medicine and managed to succeed Euryphon in the medical school of Cnidos, one of the most prominent in ancient Greece together with its neighbor medical school of Cos (Hippocrates’ home). In Cnidos Herodicus formed his own theoretical perspective of medicine. He considered, namely, bad health to be the result of imbalance between diet and physical activity and for this reason he recommended strict diet, constant physical activity and regular training. He …

Transcranial Doppler Estimation Of Cerebral Blood Flow And Cerebrovascular Conductance During Modified Rebreathing, Jurgen A.H.R. Claassen, Rong Zhang, Qi Fu, Sarah Witkowski, Benjamin D. Levine Mar 2007

Transcranial Doppler Estimation Of Cerebral Blood Flow And Cerebrovascular Conductance During Modified Rebreathing, Jurgen A.H.R. Claassen, Rong Zhang, Qi Fu, Sarah Witkowski, Benjamin D. Levine

Exercise and Sport Studies: Faculty Publications

Clinical transcranial Doppler assessment of cerebral vasomotor reactivity (CVMR) uses linear regression of cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) vs. end-tidal CO2 (PETCO2) under steady-state conditions. However, the cerebral blood flow (CBF)-PETCO2 relationship is nonlinear, even for moderate changes in CO2. Moreover, CBF is increased by increases in arterial blood pressure (ABP) during hypercapnia. We used a modified rebreathing protocol to estimate CVMR during transient breath-by-breath changes in CBFV and PETCO2. Ten healthy subjects (6 men) performed 15 s of hyperventilation followed by 5 min of rebreathing, with supplemental O2 to maintain arterial oxygen saturation constant. To minimize effects of changes …

Handling Immediate Medical Care At Aquatic Facilities: Do We Need Different Levels Of Lifeguard Certification?, Leland Yarger

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The first-responder and professional-rescuer training materials and training programs consider lifeguards to be first responders in emergencies (Aehlert, 2005; American Red Cross, 2001). This article asks readers to consider whether our agency lifeguard-training programs reflect a philosophy that truly view and prepare lifeguards as first responders. If not, I challenge readers to consider whether we should alter our hiring, staffing, and in-service training procedures at aquatic facilities based on the scope and need for providing adequate emergency care at those facilities.

Perceived Benefits Of Students' Service-Learning Experiences With Hippotherapy, Deborah Buswell, Filitsa Leriou Jan 2007

Perceived Benefits Of Students' Service-Learning Experiences With Hippotherapy, Deborah Buswell, Filitsa Leriou

Faculty Publications

The term hippotherapy has its roots in the Greek language, and is translated as treatment with the help of the horse (Glasow, 2003). Using horseback tiding as a form of natural exercise dates back to Hippocrates (460-377 B.C.). Although therapeutic riding and hippotherapy are both used as forms of treatment for persons with disabilities, they are not synonymous. Hippotherapy is prescribed by a physician and utilizes equine movement as part of a treatment strategy and is used by physical, occupational, and speech therapists "as part of an integrated treatment program to achieve functional outcomes" (American Hippotherapy Association, 2003, What is …

Chapter, Virtual Reality for Robotic Laparoscopic Surgical Training, co-authored by Nicholas Stergiou, UNO faculty member.

Our culture is obsessed with design. Sometimes designers can fuse utility and fantasy to make the mundane appear fresh—a cosmetic repackaging of the same old thing. Because of this, medicine—grounded in the unforgiving realities of the scientific method and peer review, and of flesh, blood, and pain—can sometimes confuse “design” with mere “prettifying.” Design solves real problems, however. This collection of papers underwrites the importance of design for the MMVR community, within three different environments: in vivo, in vitro and in silico. in vivo: we …
