Faculty Publications

International Journal of Exercise Science 12(2): 221-232, 2019. The lactate threshold is considered a key marker of endurance exercise performance and identification of this threshold is important in writing an exercise training program. Unfortunately, assessment of the lactate threshold has traditionally required venous or capillary blood samples and a specialized meter to assess blood lactate concentrations. Recently, a consumer grade, non-invasive device was developed to determine muscle oxygenation and estimate the lactate threshold. Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the validity of a noninvasive lactate threshold device (NID) to determine lactate threshold heart rate (LTHR). Methods: Twenty-one …

The Relationship Between Angular Momentum Of The Lower Trunk And Shoulder Joint Forces In Overarm Throwing Athletes, Kevin Moore Jan 2019

The Relationship Between Angular Momentum Of The Lower Trunk And Shoulder Joint Forces In Overarm Throwing Athletes, Kevin Moore

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Overarm throwing athletes utilize the kinetic chain, which allows forces generated by the lower body to be transmitted to the throwing arm in a proximal-to-distal sequence. Efficient force transmission from the lower body to the throwing arm can improve performance and reduce risk for injury. The purpose of this thesis was to explore the relationship between the lower trunk (pelvis) maximum angular momentum and the joint resultant forces at the shoulder during the overarm throwing motion of baseball athletes. I hypothesized that there would be a negative correlation between the maximum angular momentum about the superior-inferior axis of the lower …

Optimization Of Underbody Blast Energy-Attenuating Seat Mechanisms Using Modified Madymo Hybrid Iii And Human Body Models, Kelly Erin Bryan Bosch

Wayne State University Dissertations

Energy attenuating (EA) blast seats, although not new to the market, have not been fully characterized with respect to energy attenuation capability and the resulting effects on occupant protection. EA seats utilize stroking mechanisms to absorb energy and reduce the vertical forces imparted on the occupant’s pelvis and lower spine complex. Although a variety of EA seats are available on the market, the fundamental question behind how to optimize the force and deflection rates of the EA mechanisms to effectively reduce occupant injury has not yet been answered. Using modeling and simulation techniques, this research developed a tool to determine …

Student-Athlete Compensation: An Alternative Compensation Model For All Athletes Competing In Ncaa Athletics, Mike Stocz, Nicholas Schlereth, Dax Crum, Alonzo Maestas, John Barnes

Kinesiology

The Ed O’Bannon case (O’Bannon v. National Collegiate Athletic Association, 2015) has brought student-athlete compensation to the national spotlight. While the NCAA continues to defend its policy of amateurism, the time for college athlete compensation may soon become a reality (NCAA Division I Manual, 2019). Recent college athlete compensation models have explored revenue sharing models similar to that of professional sports leagues, although previous research failed to develop a compensation model for athletes in sports beyond basketball and football (Huma & Staurowsky, 2013). The current research argues for a more applied, market-economy compensation model to offer fair compensation to collegiate …

Effects Of Psychological Stress During Exercise On Markers Of Oxidative Stress In Young Healthy, Trained Men, Matthew J. Mcallister, Steven A. Basham, Hunter S. Waldman, Johneric W. Smith, Joni A. Mettler, Matthew B. Butawan, Richard J. Bloomer Jan 2019

Effects Of Psychological Stress During Exercise On Markers Of Oxidative Stress In Young Healthy, Trained Men, Matthew J. Mcallister, Steven A. Basham, Hunter S. Waldman, Johneric W. Smith, Joni A. Mettler, Matthew B. Butawan, Richard J. Bloomer

Kinesiology

Those engaged in high stress occupations such as firefighters and military personnel are exposed to a variety of psychological and physiological stressors. The combination of mental and physical stress [i.e., dual stress challenges (DSC)] results in significant increases in stress hormones, which causes oxidative stress (OS) and contributes to elevated risk for cardiovascular disease. However, data are needed to determine the impact of DSC on markers of OS in exercise-trained individuals.

Increased Sod2 In The Diaphragm Contributes To Exercise-Induced Protection Against Ventilator-Induced Diaphragm Dysfunction, Stephanie E. Hall Jan 2019

Increased Sod2 In The Diaphragm Contributes To Exercise-Induced Protection Against Ventilator-Induced Diaphragm Dysfunction, Stephanie E. Hall

Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Mechanical ventilation (MV) is a life-saving intervention for many critically ill patients. Unfortunately, prolonged MV results in rapid diaphragmatic atrophy and contractile dysfunction, collectively termed ventilator-induced diaphragm dysfunction (VIDD). Recent evidence reveals that endurance exercise training, performed prior to MV, protects the diaphragm against VIDD. While the mechanism(s) responsible for this exercise-induced protection against VIDD remain unknown, increased diaphragm antioxidant expression may be required. To investigate the role that increased antioxidants play in this protection, we tested the hypothesis that elevated levels of the mitochondrial antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2) is required to achieve exercise-induced protection against VIDD. Cause …
