Dynamic Transcriptomic Responses Of Circulating Immune Cells In Response To Subsequent Days Of Exercise Heat Stress, Soohyun Oh May 2023

Dynamic Transcriptomic Responses Of Circulating Immune Cells In Response To Subsequent Days Of Exercise Heat Stress, Soohyun Oh

University Scholar Projects

Acute exercise and chronic training have diverse effects on immune function that are still not well understood. There are remaining questions about how an acute bout of exercise, competition, or repeated training over a period affects an individual’s immune defense system. In a related study, there is evidence that acute exercise may serve as an adjuvant to enhance response to immune function as well as contradicting evidence, including our preliminary data (unpublished). Understanding the fundamental function and gene expression of circulating immune cells in response to acute exercise and in various contexts such as heat stress is critical in understanding …

The Effect Of Joint Versus Soft Tissue Flossing On Overall Performance In The Lower Extremities, Emily Bray May 2023

The Effect Of Joint Versus Soft Tissue Flossing On Overall Performance In The Lower Extremities, Emily Bray

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Effective warm-up routines result in a reduction in muscle soreness post-exercise, a lessened risk of injury, and an enhanced performance output ability. Existing research has shown promising effects of muscle tissue flossing, a novel method of warming up in which a latex band is used to apply pressure to a specific area in the body. The purpose of this study was to determine how active college students respond to flossing applied to both a joint as well as soft tissue in the lower extremities, focusing on the ankle joint and calf muscle. Floss bands were applied bilaterally for each of …

An Investigation Of Resistance Training Behavior, Non-Specific Psychological Distress, And Perceived Barriers To Resistance Training In Self-Identifying Female Undergraduate Students, Jody Sobel

Master's Theses

The prevalence and severity of depression symptoms amongst college students, specifically female identifying undergraduate students, is worrisome. There is a great deal of research that suggests a relationship between exercise, specifically resistance training (RT), and mental health. That said, current literature suggests that many female identifying students are not engaging due to perceived barriers. This, perhaps because of the plethora of barriers one can perceive. The purpose of this study was multifold 1) to examine the prevalence and severity of non-specific psychological distress; 2) to determine if there were differences between Kessler 6 Non-Specific Psychological Distress Scale (K6) categories (i.e., …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of required remote work on work–family spillover within U.S. college sport. In particular, we examined the changes in work–family spillover (positive and negative), job commitment, and workaholism as employee’s work environment changed from traditional work expectations to work from home, and if these changes were, at least partially, due to parental responsibilities. Data were collected from full-time, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) athletic department employees (n = 1,139) in November 2019 and again in May 2020 following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and after the transition to remote …

The Effects Of Attentional Focus Instructions On Approach Jump Performance, Hanwen Liu May 2023

The Effects Of Attentional Focus Instructions On Approach Jump Performance, Hanwen Liu

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Introduction: Attentional focus is a crucial factor that impacts motor learning and performance. Instructions that direct performers’ attention externally (i.e., toward the effects of movements) have been shown to enhance performance compared to those that direct attention internally (i.e., toward the body’s movements). Research has also demonstrated that novices perform better when they are instructed to focus externally on the process of skill execution versus the outcome. However, this effect has not been tested in complex jumping skills that are important in many sports.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to test the effects of internally and externally directed …

The Study Of A Generalized Fitness Education Program's Effect On Personality Traits, Garrett Schliep May 2023

The Study Of A Generalized Fitness Education Program's Effect On Personality Traits, Garrett Schliep

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

This longitudinal study was to measure the influence of a generalized fitness education program on the percentile of individuals’ personality traits in college aged individuals. The personality traits are those determined in the Five Factor Model of Personality. The Five Factor Model of Personality is a beneficial tool used in exercise psychology that refers to a broad domain of personality traits often referred to as the “Big Five”. The findings reject the hypothesis that a fitness education program would shift an individual’s personality a statistically significant amount.

Gaze During Turning In Older Adults, Kalina Mavrov May 2023

Gaze During Turning In Older Adults, Kalina Mavrov

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

To navigate complex environments, our gaze needs to attenuate to locomotor tasks, such as walking and turning. Shifting gaze (i.e., rotation of the eyes and head), is important when moving through different environments. The aim of this study was to compare gaze anticipation during clinical tests and complex real-world locomotion. I hypothesized that older adults would shift their gaze in a new heading direction in anticipation of turns. I further predicted increased gaze anticipation in tasks that have a high demand for spatial orientation. Participants were asked to complete clinical tasks consisting of a 2-minute walk, figure-8, and 360-turning in …

Sympathetic Control Of Blood Pressure In Young Non-Hispanic Black Women, Brandi Stephens May 2023

Sympathetic Control Of Blood Pressure In Young Non-Hispanic Black Women, Brandi Stephens

Kinesiology Dissertations - Archive

Non-Hispanic Black women in the United States have a greater prevalence of hypertension compared to non-Hispanic White women, which contributes to a parallel rise in excessive cardiovascular disease burden. Although women of other race/ethnic groups have a lower prevalence of cardiovascular disease compared to their respective male counterparts, Black women have a similar or greater prevalence to Black men, and early cardiovascular disease markers can manifest even in young adulthood. Heightened sympathetic nervous system reactivity and its transduction to blood pressure (i.e., sympathetic vascular transduction) have been proposed as potential mediators of elevated hypertension risk. In addition, it has been …

Does Learning A Skill With The Expectation Of Teaching It Impair The Skill’S Execution Under Psychological Pressure If The Skill Is Learned With Analogy Instructions?, Daniel A. R. Cabral, Marcos Daou, Mariane F. B. Bacelar, Juliana O. Parma, Matthew W. Miller May 2023

Miller

Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Objective: Having learners practice a motor skill with the expectation of teaching it (versus an expectation of being tested on it) has been revealed to enhance skill learning. However, this improvement in skill performance is lost when the skill must be performed under psychological pressure due to ‘choking under pressure.’ The present study investigated whether this choking effect is caused by an accrual of declarative knowledge during skill practice and could be prevented if a technique (analogy instructions) to minimize the accrual of declarative knowledge during practice is employed.

Design: We used a 2 (Expectation: teach/test) x 2 (Instructions: analogy/explicit) …

That Looks Easy!: Evidence Against The Benefits Of An Easier Criterion Of Success For Enhancing Motor Learning, Juliana O. Parma, Mariane F. B. Bacelar, Daniel A. R. Cabral, Keith R. Lohse, Nicola J. Hodges, Matthew W. Miller

Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations

OPTIMAL theory predicts providing learners with a relatively easier criterion of success during practice enhances motor learning through increased self-efficacy, perceptions of competence, and intrinsic motivation. However, mixed results in the literature suggest this enhancement effect may be moderated by the number of successes achieved by learners practicing with the difficult criterion. To investigate this possibility, we manipulated quantity of practice to affect the absolute number of successes achieved by learners practicing with different success criteria. Eighty participants were divided into four groups and performed 50 or 100 trials of a mini-shuffleboard task. Groups practiced with either a large or …

Effects Of Pubertal Growth Variation On Knee Mechanics During Walking In Female And Male Adolescents, Andrew W. Froehle, Brian A. Edwards, Matthew Peterson, Brian Meyerson, Dana Duren May 2023

Effects Of Pubertal Growth Variation On Knee Mechanics During Walking In Female And Male Adolescents, Andrew W. Froehle, Brian A. Edwards, Matthew Peterson, Brian Meyerson, Dana Duren

School of Health and Exercise Sciences Faculty Publications

Introduction: Puberty substantially alters the body's mechanical properties, neuromuscular control, and sex differences therein, likely contributing to increased, sex-biased knee injury risk during adolescence. Female adolescents have higher risk for knee injuries than male adolescents of similar age engaging in similar physical activities, and much research has investigated sex differences in mechanical risk factors. However, few studies address the considerable variation in pubertal growth (timing, pace), knee mechanics, and injury susceptibility within sexes, or the impact of such growth variation on mechanical injury risk.

Objectives: The present study tested for effects of variation in pubertal growth on established mechanical …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The purpose of this study was to compare lower-limb muscle activation during gait, performed in water versus on land, in order to provide preliminary evidence for the benefit of aquatic treadmill walking in treating individuals with foot drop. Foot drop is a debilitating symptom of several neurological disorders characterized by the inability to dorsiflex the foot while walking. Generally, it is due to weakness in the ankle dorsiflexor muscles and/or increased tone in the plantar flexor muscles. Previous research has found that exercise interventions that demand greater than normal activation of the tibialis anterior (TA) (i.e., the primary ankle dorsiflexor) …

Obstacle Crossing In Healthy Young And Older Individuals, Hope M. Hanson, Ashlyn M. Jendro, Abigail C. Schmitt

Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses

Introduction: In the United States, the average population age is rising and will continue to increase in the coming years. With an older population comes increased risk of injury associated with falls. Falls are considered a leading cause of injury and death in older individuals, and many falls are caused by body imbalance or obstacle collision due to a clearly visible stationary object (e.g., rug, chair, branch). Older adults tend to cross obstacles with increased toe clearance in order to prevent tripping, but much of what is known about obstacle crossing in older adults is limited to artificial obstacles that are …
