Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association
A 19-year-old male collegiate lacrosse player suffered an acute singular parasymphysis fracture of the mandible when he was struck in the facemask of his helmet by a lacrosse ball during practice. The fracture was confirmed via panoramic radiography and treated with a closed reduction under local anesthetic by looping a 26-gauge wire around the two right incisors and the right cuspid. This approach to managing the fracture was taken instead of an open reduction and plate application to be less invasive with the hope of a faster recovery and fewer complications. The fracture healed and aligned properly, and after six …

Biological sex affects the neurocirculatory adjustments to fatiguing exercise. However, the effects of sex and oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) on sympathetic action potential (AP) emission patterns and the transduction of AP discharge into vasoconstriction during static handgrip (SHG) exercise remains unknown. We tested the hypothesis that males, and females using OCPs, would demonstrate larger increases in sympathetic activation and sympathetic vascular transduction compared to naturally menstruating females during SHG and post-exercise circulatory occlusion (PECO). Young males (n=14, 25[5] yr), females using OCPs (n=16, 24[6] yr), and naturally menstruating females (n=18, 26[4] yr) underwent assessments of multi-unit muscle sympathetic nerve activity …

The prevalence of dietary supplement use among athletes continues to rise with 60–80% of athletes often reporting current or previous use of dietary supplements. While select dietary ingredients have been shown to improve acute performance and enhance training adaptations over time, it is important to still consider the risk vs. reward for athletes before opting to consume a dietary supplement. Previous work has indicated that certain dietary supplements may pose risks for inadvertent doping, may be susceptible to mislabelling, could be banned by certain governing bodies of sport, or pose health risks for certain populations. The purpose of the current …

The goal of this study was to examine how athletes holding privileged racial identities understand their whiteness as they engage in racial justice activism. Drawing from 12 semistructured interviews with white collegiate athletes who have engaged in activism for racial justice, we identified four higher order themes which we situate within a broader discussion of how each theme either reinforces or disrupts racial power: articulations of (a) racial consciousness, (b) white privilege, (c) white empathy, and (d) white accountability. While the white accountability theme has the potential to disrupt racial power due to its relying on rigorous self-critique, the remaining …

Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy And Beets To Illuminate Nutrition Principles, Carrie E. Ellis
Educational Practices in Kinesiology
While near-infrared spectroscopy has been used in research and athletic development for some time, recent technological advances have made it accessible as an undergraduate learning tool. This teaching resource describes how near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) can be used in an in-person kinesiology laboratory. This activity illuminates nutrition principles, including issues with using supplements, deceptive marketing and labeling practices, and the value of nutrient-dense whole foods by observing vasodilation as a result of nitrate consumption in the form of whole beets and a beetroot supplement. In addition, using NIRS allows students to observe their body’s response to nitrates in real-time by measuring …

Quantifying Balance: Computational And Learning Frameworks For The Characterization Of Balance In Bipedal Systems, Kubra Akbas
Dissertations
In clinical practice and general healthcare settings, the lack of reliable and objective balance and stability assessment metrics hinders the tracking of patient performance progression during rehabilitation; the assessment of bipedal balance plays a crucial role in understanding stability and falls in humans and other bipeds, while providing clinicians important information regarding rehabilitation outcomes. Bipedal balance has often been examined through kinematic or kinetic quantities, such as the Zero Moment Point and Center of Pressure; however, analyzing balance specifically through the body's Center of Mass (COM) state offers a holistic and easily comprehensible view of balance and stability.

Temporal Organization Of Stride-To-Stride Variations Contradicts Predictive Models For Sensorimotor Control Of Footfalls During Walking, Madhur Mangalam, Damian G. Kelty-Stephen, Joel H. Sommerfeld, Nicholas Stergiou, Aaron Likens
Journal Articles
Walking exhibits stride-to-stride variations. Given ongoing perturbations, these variations critically support continuous adaptations between the goal-directed organism and its surroundings. Here, we report that stride-to-stride variations during self-paced overground walking show cascade-like intermittency—stride intervals become uneven because stride intervals of different sizes interact and do not simply balance each other. Moreover, even when synchronizing footfalls with visual cues with variable timing of presentation, asynchrony in the timings of the cue and footfall shows cascade-like intermittency. This evidence conflicts with theories about the sensorimotor control of walking, according to which internal predictive models correct asynchrony in the timings of the cue …

Bursts of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) and the ensuing vasoconstriction are pivotal determinants of beat-by-beat blood pressure regulation. Although age and sex impact blood pressure regulation, how these factors affect the central and peripheral arcs of the baroreflex remains unclear. In 27 young (25[3] years) males (YM; n=14) and females (YF; n=13) and 23 older (71[5] years) males (OM; n=11) and females (OF; n=12) femoral artery blood flow, blood pressure and MSNA were recorded for 10 minutes of supine rest. Sympathetic baroreflex sensitivity (i.e., central arc) was quantified as the relationship between diastolic blood pressure …

International Journal of Exercise Science 16(4): 1066-1076, 2023. This study investigated the influence of yoga breathing techniques (YBT) on physiological and perceptual responses during sub-maximal treadmill running. Runners (n = 21) of various fitness (VO2max 48.4 ± 9.5 ml/kg/min) were assigned to Yoga (YG) or control (CT) group before completing pre/post treadmill trials where velocity was self-selected to produce an RPE 4 and RPE 7 (10 min each). YG (n =11) practiced three styles of YBT (30 min/day, 6 days/wk) for 3 consecutive wks. Self-selected running velocity for YG improved significantly at both prescribed RPE 4 (pre 157.63 ± 26.20 …

International Journal of Exercise Science 16(1): 1077-1086, 2023. Preferential activation of rectus abdominis sections during crunch or leg lifts has long been disputed. The objectives of this study were to both explore the activation of the rectus abdominis during these exercises. This study used a randomised independent measures design utilising both EMG and diagnostic ultrasound to record changes in rectus abdominis activity. Fifteen participants each performed multiple repetitions of a 45° crunch, a 90° sit-up, and finally a 90° leg raise, sufficient for an 8-second ultrasound recording utilising M-mode of all four unilateral abdominal segments during each of the exercises, …
