Quantifying Physical Function: Moving Towards A New Definition And Better Assessment, Anthony Campitelli
Quantifying Physical Function: Moving Towards A New Definition And Better Assessment, Anthony Campitelli
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Though poor physical function (PF) and disability are two of the most impactful problems facing older adults today, the field of kinesiology has not yet devised a method of measuring PF, thus limiting investigations with the potential to lead to improved PF interventions and assessments. This dissertation aimed to develop a single, continuous measure of PF using a latent variable modeling approach, and then use the generated scores to evaluate the role of lower body muscular power in PF assessment and to construct an improved PF assessment battery for predicting overall PF. Each aim of this dissertation was addressed through …

The Additive Effect Of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation On Resistance Training Induced Adaptations In Glycemic Control, Muscle Mass And Muscular Strength, Gabriel Narvaez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Background: Most adults do not reach the physical activity guidelines set by ACSM (>75%). Resistance training is well known to improve muscle mass, strength, and glycemic control. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is a mode of inducing involuntary muscle contractions. Previously, we have shown neuromuscular electrical stimulation is able to improve glycemic control. However, the effects of superimposing NMES while resistance training on glycemic control, substrate utilization and resting energy expenditure (REE) is unknown. Purpose: To investigate the effects of 8 weeks of superimposed NMES on resistance training compared to resistance training for glycemic control, substrate utilization, REE, muscle mass …
Pelvic Sucker Form And Function In Waterfall Climbing Gobies: Variation In Morphology And Adhesive Performance Can Inspire Biomimetic Innovation, Amanda Palecek Mcclung
Pelvic Sucker Form And Function In Waterfall Climbing Gobies: Variation In Morphology And Adhesive Performance Can Inspire Biomimetic Innovation, Amanda Palecek Mcclung
All Dissertations
Adhesive systems have evolved in many animal lineages and have appeared multiple times among the fishes. Bioadhesion in the gobies, a group found around the world, plays a role in both station-holding and even climbing. Among the Hawaiian streams, we find four species of amphidromous gobies which must face predators as juveniles and climb streams up to hundreds of feet tall to reach adult habitats. These gobies exhibit a range of climbing and adhesive abilities that result in an elevation-dependent species stratification, in which increasingly proficient climbing species are found in streams at increasingly higher elevations. This group is therefore …

Exercise and Sport Studies: Faculty Publications
Repetitive subconcussive head impacts occur regularly in sports. However, the exact relationship between their biomechanical properties and their consequences on brain structure and function has not been clarified yet. We therefore reviewed prospective cohort studies that objectively reported the biomechanical characteristics of repetitive subconcussive head impacts and their impact on brain anatomy and function. Only studies with a pre- to post-measurement design were included. Twenty-four studies met the inclusion criteria. Structural white matter alterations, such as reduced fractional anisotropy and an increase in mean diffusivity values, seem to be evident in athletes exposed to repetitive subconcussive head impacts exceeding 10 …
