Space Architecture Assessment Using System-Of-Systems Methodologies, Liam Durbin, Cesare Guariniello, Daniel Delaurentis
Space Architecture Assessment Using System-Of-Systems Methodologies, Liam Durbin, Cesare Guariniello, Daniel Delaurentis
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
As technologies in the space exploration community are further developed, mission complexity and the associated risks have become greater. Dozens of complicated system interactions may result in unexpected, potentially dangerous emergent behaviors. Early efforts are underway by NASA to map potential system architectures (collections of systems which fulfill design requirements) for future human space exploration missions. However, current mission complexity requires the determination of emergent behaviors, as well as time requirements, and safety levels of complicated space exploration architectures, which current analysis methods in use cannot address. To that end, a newer technique has been developed—System Operability Dependency Analysis (SODA). …
Economic Model Predictive Control Design Via Nonlinear Model Identification, Laura Giuliani, Helen Durand
Economic Model Predictive Control Design Via Nonlinear Model Identification, Laura Giuliani, Helen Durand
Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Faculty Research Publications
Increasing pushes toward next-generation/smart manufacturing motivate the development of economic model predictive control (EMPC) designs which can be practically deployed. For EMPC, the constraints, objective function, and accuracy of the state predictions would benefit from process models that describe the process physics. However, obtaining first- principles models of chemical process systems can be time-consuming or challenging such that it is preferable to develop physics-based process models automatically from process operating data. In this work, we take initial steps in this direction by suggesting that because experiments that are used to characterize first-principles models often target specific types of data, an …
Proposing A Sparse Weighted Directed Network Construction Method And A Novel Mutual-Information Based Sparse Feature Selection Algorithm For Multivariate Time-Series Analysis And Its Application In Medical Diagnostic Problems, Rahilsadat Hosseini
Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive
The main purpose of this study is feature engineering/learning from multivariate (MV) time-series to achieve a more interpretable model by dimension reduction. This aim is fulfilled in 2 main parts. In part 1, we proposed a network estimation approach namely SWDN which stands for sparse weighted directed network. In this approach, the directed subgraph of the underlying network was detected by maximum spanning tree (MST) algorithm that created a null model of connections with maximum inter-dependence (pairwise correlation or mutual information) forming the backbone structure of the MV time-series as an empirical reference. The edge weights were estimated using the …

In machine learning and mathematical optimization, sparse learning is the use of mathematical norms such as L1-norm, group norm and L21-norm in order to seek a trade-off between the goodness-of-fit measure and sparsity of the result. Sparsity of result leads to a parsimonious learning model - in other words, only few features from the data matrix are required to build the learning model and for further interpretation. The motivations of employing sparse learning in bioinformatics are two-fold: firstly, a parsimonious learning model enhances the explanatory power; and secondly, a parsimonious model generally allows better prediction and generalizes better to new …

Adjusting For Time Varying Confounding In Adaptive Interdisciplinary Pain Management Program, Nilabh Ohol
Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Interdisciplinary pain management combines multiple disciplines of professionals to understand the biological and psychosocial factors causing a patient's pain and to determine the best treatments among many to administer. The Eugene McDermott Center of Pain at University of Texas at Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas runs a two stage adaptive interdisciplinary pain management program with the aim to improve current and future pain outcomes. The sequential treatment regime for the pain and the observational nature of data yield to time varying confounding and a form of endogeneity. This yields biased estimates of the treatment effects which is undesirable. Our adaptive …

There is an economic need to extend the useful life of jet engine rotors. Retirement-for-Cause (RFC) is a lifing method that allows for the continued operation of components passed traditional life limits. Under RFC, an extension of damage tolerance, components are deemed safe for a further service interval using non-destructive inspections (NDI) for crack like defe cts. As components are kept in-service beyond their designed service life it is essential that the probability of failure (POF), or risk, of continued service is known. Under current FAA rotor design certification practices the component POF is analyzed using a probabilistic framework focused …
Tk-Mars: An Efficient Approach For Deterministic And Stochastic Black-Box Optimization, Hadis Anahideh
Tk-Mars: An Efficient Approach For Deterministic And Stochastic Black-Box Optimization, Hadis Anahideh
Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Surrogate optimization approaches for black-box functions focus on approximating the underlying function, using metamodeling techniques, in order to optimize computationally expensive simulation models. Historically, surrogate optimization models have been validated by deterministic (noiseless) functions with every variable being significant. As a result, many surrogate optimization models used interpolating surrogates. However, many real world experiments often times include parameters that are insignificant and uncertainties associated with the black-box function. Using traditional interpolating surrogate optimization methods can lead to surrogate models with unnecessary predictors and sensitivity to noise. Consequently, a surrogate model with flexible, non-interpolating, and parsimonious characteristics is required to overcome …

The topic of innovation currently generates a tremendous amount of interest around the world. Innovation is considered an essential part of the solution to creating more jobs and improving the socio-economic conditions of many countries around the globe. Innovation comes about through the existence of many interrelated solutions to socio-economic problems in an extensively interconnected network, which create value for each other. Such a complex creativity and innovation value-creating network is here called an Innovation Ecosystem (IE). The main objective of this dissertation research is to improve the current understanding of the IE by developing a simulation model that uses …
Methods For Online Feature Selection For Classification Problems, Alaleh Razmjoo
Methods For Online Feature Selection For Classification Problems, Alaleh Razmjoo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Online learning is a growing branch of machine learning which allows all traditional data mining techniques to be applied on an online stream of data in real-time. In this dissertation, we present three efficient algorithms for feature ranking in online classification problems. Each of the methods are tailored to work well with different types of classification tasks and have different advantages. The reason for this variety of algorithms is that like other machine learning solutions, there is usually no algorithm which works well for all types of tasks. The first method, is an online sensitivity based feature ranking (SFR) which …
Design And Qualification Of A Robust Polyurethane Based Conformal Coating Process For Sodimms, Rajat Dhiman
Design And Qualification Of A Robust Polyurethane Based Conformal Coating Process For Sodimms, Rajat Dhiman
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
Conformal coatings protect printed circuit board assemblies, including the electronic components that the assemblies are populated with. A variety of materials and application methods can be used to conformally coat assemblies. The process setup is crucial to repeatable process reliability. The manual spray based conformal coating is widely used. This method of application was selected due to its compatibility, affordability, and efficiency with the required application. Polyurethanes, one of the families of conformal coatings, provide resistance against abrasion, heat, and chemicals while reducing the risk of tin whiskers. In order to minimize the need for rework and create an efficient, …
Barge Prioritization, Assignment, And Scheduling During Inland Waterway Disruption Responses, Liliana Delgado-Hidalgo
Barge Prioritization, Assignment, And Scheduling During Inland Waterway Disruption Responses, Liliana Delgado-Hidalgo
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Inland waterways face natural and man-made disruptions that may affect navigation and infrastructure operations leading to barge traffic disruptions and economic losses. This dissertation investigates inland waterway disruption responses to intelligently redirect disrupted barges to inland terminals and prioritize offloading while minimizing total cargo value loss. This problem is known in the literature as the cargo prioritization and terminal allocation problem (CPTAP). A previous study formulated the CPTAP as a non-linear integer programming (NLIP) model solved with a genetic algorithm (GA) approach. This dissertation contributes three new and improved approaches to solve the CPTAP.
The first approach is a decomposition …
Solving School Bus Routing And Student Assignment Problems With Heuristic And Column Generation Approach., Di Zhang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, we solve a school bus routing problem of transporting students including special education (handicapped) students and assigning them in Oldham county education district. The main contribution of this research is that we consider special education students (Type-2) along with other students (Type-1) and design a comprehensive school bus schedule to transport both kinds of students at the same time. Also, a student assignment mathematical model is presented to optimize the number of bus stops in use as well as one important measure of service quality, the total student walking distance. Comparing to the classic clustering methods, heuristic …

Binder Jetting Additive Manufacturing Process Fundamentals And The Resultant Influences On Part Quality., Hadi Miyanaji
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Binder jetting additive manufacturing (BJ-AM) technology is a process by which a part is fabricated layer by layer through depositing liquid binder in the designated regions of each layer until the feature is complete. Due to the use of binder in geometry generation, this process possesses various advantages over the other additive manufacturing technologies including the ability to create colored objects via colored binders, lower cost, lack of heat-induced defects, and its potential capability to print a variety of materials such as metals, sands and ceramics. Although the application of the binder jetting process has been recently reported by different …
Developing Optimization Techniques For Logistical Tendering Using Reverse Combinatorial Auctions, Jennifer Kiser
Developing Optimization Techniques For Logistical Tendering Using Reverse Combinatorial Auctions, Jennifer Kiser
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In business-to-business logistical sourcing events, companies regularly use a bidding process known as tendering in the procurement of transportation services from third-party providers. Usually in the form of an auction involving a single buyer and one or more sellers, the buyer must make decisions regarding with which suppliers to partner and how to distribute the transportation lanes and volume among its suppliers; this is equivalent to solving the optimization problem commonly referred to as the Winner Determination Problem. In order to take into account the complexities inherent to the procurement problem, such as considering a supplier’s network, economies of scope, …
Configuring Traditional Multi-Dock, Unit-Load Warehouses, Mahmut Tutam
Configuring Traditional Multi-Dock, Unit-Load Warehouses, Mahmut Tutam
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The development of expected-distance formulas for multi-dock-door, unit-load warehouse configurations is the focus of the dissertation. From formulations derived, the width-to-depth ratios minimizing expected distances are obtained for rectangle-shaped, unit-load warehouse configurations. Partitioning the storage region in the warehouse into three classes, the performance of a multi-dock-door, unit-load warehouse is studied when storage regions can be either rectangle-shaped or contour-line-shaped. Our first contribution is the development of formulas for expected distance traveled in storing and retrieving unit loads in a rectangle-shaped warehouse having multiple dock doors along one warehouse wall and storage racks aligned perpendicular to that wall. Two formulations …
Modeling And Solution Approaches For Non-Traditional Network Flow Problems With Complicating Constraints, Negin Enayaty Ahangar
Modeling And Solution Approaches For Non-Traditional Network Flow Problems With Complicating Constraints, Negin Enayaty Ahangar
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, we model three network-based optimization problems. Chapter 2 addresses the question of what the operation plan should be for interdependent infrastructure systems in resource-constrained environments so that they collectively operate at the highest level. We develop a network-based operation model of these systems that accounts for interdependencies among them. To solve this large-scale model, a solution approach is proposed that relatively quickly generates high-quality solutions to the problem.
Chapter 3 presents a routing model for a single train within a railyard with the objective of minimizing the total length traveled by train. The difference between this problem …
Achieving Universal Liaisons And Healthcare Contact Center Centralization Through The Use Of Decision Support Tools, Jared S. Fiacco
Achieving Universal Liaisons And Healthcare Contact Center Centralization Through The Use Of Decision Support Tools, Jared S. Fiacco
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
Healthcare contact centers often experience a large volume of calls and traditional standardized guidelines can be difficult to follow during an active call. While more common workflows can be memorized, they change often because Healthcare is a dynamic field. Constant updates to workflows, an abundance of different processes and provider preferences, and a fast paced environment can lead Customer Service Liaisons (CSLs) to handle patient inquiries incorrectly. Active decision support tools enable a CSL to follow an updated workflow without needing to navigate through complex guidelines and emails. This research shows that contact center centralization through the use of decision …

In recent years, NoSQL database systems have become increasingly popular, especially for big data, commercial applications. These systems were designed to overcome the scaling and flexibility limitations plaguing traditional relational database management systems (RDBMSs). Given NoSQL database systems have been typically implemented in large-scale distributed environments serving large numbers of simultaneous users across potentially thousands of geographically separated devices, little consideration has been given to evaluating their value within single-box environments. It is postulated some of the inherent traits of each NoSQL database type may be useful, perhaps even preferable, regardless of scale. Thus, this paper proposes criteria conceived to …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper focuses on a recent variant of the Orienteering Problem (OP), namely the Capacitated Team Orienteering Problem (CTOP). In this problem, each node is associated with a demand that needs to be satisfied and a score that need to be collected. Given a set of homogeneous fleet of vehicles, the main objective is to find a path for each available vehicle in order to maximize the total score, without violating the capacity and time budget of each vehicle. We propose an Iterated Local Search algorithm that has been applied in solving various variants of the OP. We propose two …

Data-Based Nonlinear Model Identification In Economic Model Predictive Control, Laura Giuliani, Helen Durand
Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Faculty Research Publications
Many chemical/petrochemical processes in industry are not completely modeled from a first-principles perspective because of the complexity of the underlying physico-chemical phenomena and the cost of obtaining more accurate, physically relevant models. System identification methods have been utilized successfully for developing empirical, though not necessarily physical, models for advanced model-based control designs such as model predictive control (MPC) for decades. However, a fairly recent development in MPC is economic model predictive control (EMPC), which is an MPC formulated with an economics-based objective function that may operate a process in a dynamic (i.e., off steady-state) fashion, in which case the details …
