A Shock Tube Study Of Aerodynamic Heating Of Gaps In A Cylinder Subjected To Supersonic Cross Flow, Douglas D. High

Theses and Dissertations

The effects of localized aerodynamic heating in cylinder expansion gaps positioned in cross flow were investigated in a shock tube. For this study, Mach number and Reynolds number were varied from 1.04 to 1.38 and 5 x 105 to 9 x 105, respectively. The cylinder was instrumented with quick response time thermocouples positioned on the surface of the cylinder, the wall of the gap, and the gap floor. Gap aspect ratios varied from 1.23 to 3.69. Pressure gauges were used to measure wave shock speeds, pressure ratios, and transient pressure conditions. Surface temperatures were measured and converted to heat fluxes …

Static Fracture Behavior Of A Ceramic Matrix Composite At Elevated Temperatures, David M. Agins Dec 1993

Static Fracture Behavior Of A Ceramic Matrix Composite At Elevated Temperatures, David M. Agins

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated systematically the damage initiation damage progression, and failure modes of a ceramic matrix composite, Nicalon/CAS, when loaded in tension at elevated temperatures in the presence of air. A cross-ply lay-up, [0/90]2s, was studied. The primary means of analysis were stress-strain data taken during monotonic and incremental load tests and crack density assessments. Testing was conducted at room temperature 700°C, and 850°C. The stress-strain response was consistent for monotonic and incremental loading, except for a decrease in failure load at the elevated temperatures. Initial damage progression was also consistent, but the damage leading to failure and …

Experimental Analysis Of Heat Transfer Characteristics And Pressure Drop Through Screen Regenerative Heat Exchangers, Jeffrey L. Wiese Dec 1993

Experimental Analysis Of Heat Transfer Characteristics And Pressure Drop Through Screen Regenerative Heat Exchangers, Jeffrey L. Wiese

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the effect on heat transfer and friction characteristics for screen regenerative heat exchangers with the screen thickness reduced by rolling. The experiments were performed on 250 and 325 mesh, 304 stainless steel screen using helium gas. Reynolds numbers, based on hydraulic radius, Re, were between 10 and 100. Both the Colburn factor, StPr2/3, and friction factor, f, decreased as the screen thickness was reduced. A correlation was found for predicting friction factor, f. The drag coefficient per screen remained nearly unchanged for thicknesses reduced not more than 30 percent. The decrease in Colburn factor was …

A Nonlinear Three-Dimensional Micromechanics Model For Fiber-Reinforced Laminated Composites, David D. Robertson Nov 1993

A Nonlinear Three-Dimensional Micromechanics Model For Fiber-Reinforced Laminated Composites, David D. Robertson

Theses and Dissertations

In this study, a three-dimensional micromechanics model is developed. The present capabilities of the model include both unidirectional and laminated composite layups with various types of nonlinear analysis such as a thermoelastic-plastic analysis employing the Prandtl-Reuss flow relations, a thermoviscoplastic analysis using Bodner-Partom unified constitutive theory, and an interfacial damage progression scheme based on a statistical interfacial failure criteria. Such nonlinearities are critical factors during thermomechanical fatigue TMF loading of high temperature composites. Solutions were obtained and extensive comparisons performed with existing micromechanics models, finite element analysis, and experiment with excellent results. In addition, the analysis was developed to require …

Effects Of Radiative Interactions In Molecular Gases Under Local And Nonlocal Thermodynamic Equilibrium Conditions, Manoj Kumar Jha Apr 1993

Effects Of Radiative Interactions In Molecular Gases Under Local And Nonlocal Thermodynamic Equilibrium Conditions, Manoj Kumar Jha

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Basic formulations, analyses, and numerical procedures are presented to investigate radiative heat interactions in diatomic and polyatomic gases under local and nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium conditions. Essential governing equations are presented for both gray and nongray gases. Information is provided on absorption models, relaxation times, and transfer equations. Radiative flux equations are developed which are applicable under local and nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium conditions.

The problem is solved for fully developed laminar incompressible flows between two parallel plates under the boundary condition of a uniform surface heat flux. For specific applications, three diatomic and three polyatomic gases are considered. The results are …

Analysis Of Heat Pump Cycles Using Thermodynamic Equations Of State, Stephen C. Ericson Oct 1992

Analysis Of Heat Pump Cycles Using Thermodynamic Equations Of State, Stephen C. Ericson

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In this study, thermal performance of heat pump cycles is analyzed by employing several equations of state. The analysis presented here is particularly useful for applications where refrigerant properties need to be calculated from a thermodynamic equation of state. Such a situation, for example, would arise during a long-term numerical simulation of a solar-assisted heat pump system. In these cases, the direct use of thermodynamic property tables of refrigerants would not be possible in a computational procedure. The approach of using equations of state to predict thermodynamic properties is also useful for applications where new refrigerants or blends of refrigerants …

Transient Simulation Of A Trombe Wall Passive Heating System Coupled To A Thermally Stratified Room, Ali Saleh Kheireddine Oct 1992

Transient Simulation Of A Trombe Wall Passive Heating System Coupled To A Thermally Stratified Room, Ali Saleh Kheireddine

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Thermal performance of a Trombe-wall space heating system has been studied numerically for one-day and multiple-day periods. This study analyzes the system performance by simultaneously considering the coupled nature of the channel convection, wall heat conduction and transient room energy balance. A computer program has been written and implemented to assess the effects of system parameters, weather conditions and peak temperature control strategies on the system performance.

The system performance is influenced by such system parameters as the storage wall thickness, channel width and the temperature stratification in the room. Increasing the wall thickness decreases the temperature swings considerably, but …

A Mathematical Model And Simulation Of Natural Circulation Loop Thermalhydraulics, Nihad E. Daidzic Mar 1992

A Mathematical Model And Simulation Of Natural Circulation Loop Thermalhydraulics, Nihad E. Daidzic

Aviation Department Publications

In this work, a simple, nonlinear, seventh-order mathematical model with lumped parameter analysis of the thermalhydraulic processes in a natural circulation steam boiler loop is presented. Digital simulation has been performed in order to predict open loop transients in severe accidental situations. Parts of the circulation loop such as the steam drum, downcomer, and riser were modelled separately on the basis of the integral balance equations. The two-phase flow in the steam drum and in the riser was modelled with the aid of a homogeneous-equilibrium, two-phase flow model. Special care was taken to ensure the stability of the numerical scheme, …

Thermal Characterization Of Carbon Monoxide Oxidation Catalysts Using Thermogravimetric Analysts And Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Rene A. Bartgis Oct 1991

Thermal Characterization Of Carbon Monoxide Oxidation Catalysts Using Thermogravimetric Analysts And Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Rene A. Bartgis

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Catalysts composed of platinum and/or palladium on tin (IV) oxide supports, with and without silica gel, as well as catalysts composed of gold on manganese oxide, have been developed for the recombination of carbon monoxide and oxygen to form carbon dioxide for use in carbon dioxide lasers. A thermogravimetric method and a differential scanning calorimetric method have been developed for the thermal characterization of these catalysts. The mass loss data and the enthalpy changes determined as the catalysts lost water were then related to existing activity data for these catalysts. No relationship was found between the thermal data and the …

An Experimental Investigation Of The Finite Time Efficiency Of A Peltier Refrigeration Device, Thomas Schneider Aug 1991

An Experimental Investigation Of The Finite Time Efficiency Of A Peltier Refrigeration Device, Thomas Schneider

Dissertations and Theses

Since the need of energy conservation has become more and more urgent in the past decades, there has been an increased interest in the study and development of more efficient energy conversion systems. One of the fields that have arisen from that endeavor is a branch of physics called Finite Time Thermodynamics (FIT). It may be said that FIT was initiated through the famous paper by Curzon and Ahlborn (1975) that established new bounds on the efficiency of a finite time Carnot heat engine. Before, the traditional treatments gave a fundamental upper limit on the efficiency of any heat engine. …

Thermal Compatibility Analysis Of The Passive Damping Treatment Proposed For The Space Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (Srms), Mahesh Chowdhary Apr 1991

Thermal Compatibility Analysis Of The Passive Damping Treatment Proposed For The Space Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (Srms), Mahesh Chowdhary

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The NASA Space Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (SRMS), due to its long reach and light weight construction has significant structural flexibility. Thus any routine use of SRMS often results in large amplitude oscillations with long settling time. A passive damping technique utilizing a constrained viscoelastic layer damping treatment has been proposed to augment the active control of these oscillations in order to enhance the system stability and the end effector positional accuracy. This thesis concerns with the thermal compatibility analysis of the proposed damping treatment. The necessity for thermal compatibility analysis arises from the fact that acceptable damping performance of …

Evaluation Of Equilibrium Turbulence For A Hypersonic Boundary Layer At Nonadiabatic Wall Conditions, Cindy W. Albertson Jul 1989

Evaluation Of Equilibrium Turbulence For A Hypersonic Boundary Layer At Nonadiabatic Wall Conditions, Cindy W. Albertson

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This paper presents an experimental study to characterize the compressible turbulent boundary layer produced along a flat plate in the NASA Langley 8-Foot High Temperature Tunnel and determine the test conditions necessary to achieve equilibrium turbulence. In addition, the present study extends the data base for equilibrium compressible turbulent boundary layers over quasi-isothermal walls which are far from the adiabatic wall temperature. The measurements consist of pilot pressure, static pressure, and total temperature distributions in the boundary layer. A flat plate measuring 9.7 feet long and 4.3, feet wide was used for the study to provide a naturally turbulent boundary …

Simultaneous Correlation Of Excess Gibbs Energy And Enthalpy Of Mixing By The Uniquac Equation, Yaşar Demirel, Hatice Gecegörmez Jun 1989

Simultaneous Correlation Of Excess Gibbs Energy And Enthalpy Of Mixing By The Uniquac Equation, Yaşar Demirel, Hatice Gecegörmez

Papers in Analytical Chemistry

Using data for excess Gibbs energy gh and enthalpy of mixing hE, temperature dependent parameters of the UNlQUAC equation have been estimated for twenty four systems of binary mixtures. Fifteen of them include data for gh and hE at more than one isotherm. These parameters are later tested in predicting the gh and hE data simultaneously and representing the effect of temperature on such data. The UNIQUAC equation with temperature dependent parameters represents larger values of maximum heat of mixing than does the UNlQUAC equation with the parameters independent of temperature.

Development Of A Parametric Analysis Microcomputer Model For Evaluating The Thermodynamic Performance Of A Reciprocating Brayton Cycle Engine, Thomas Joseph White Nov 1987

Development Of A Parametric Analysis Microcomputer Model For Evaluating The Thermodynamic Performance Of A Reciprocating Brayton Cycle Engine, Thomas Joseph White

Dissertations and Theses

In this thesis, applicable data from research on IC engines have been adapted to PACE engine designs. Data from studies on heat transfer, friction, and pressure losses, in particular, have been used. Certain parameters which define operation and design characteristics appear to influence PACE engine performance very strongly. Some of the more critical parameters, notably friction and heat transfer coefficients, must be determined experimentally if accurate model results are to be expected. Pressure ratio, compressor RPM, and maximum combustor temperature, the independent operating parameters, also have a dramatic effect on engine performance. Other design or operating characteristics and working fluid …

The Use Of Thermal Analysis In The Identification And Characterization Of Fibers Of Forensic Interest, Ronald J. Coffey

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the use of thermal analysis for the identification and characterization of fibers for forensic purposes. Fibers such as polyesters, polyacrylics, polypropylenes and nylon were investigated by Differential Thermal Analysis (D.T.A.) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (T.G.A.) to see if their resulting thermograms were characteristic of each fiber. Also, infrared analysis was performed on each fiber. In addition, such factors as heating rate and sample size along with fiber blends were studied as to their effect on thermograms. As a result of this study several important conclusions may be drawn. Although it was found that for the most part D.T.A. …

An Investigation Of A Gas Measurement Technique Employing Ultraviolet Excitation, Alphonso Vincent Diaz May 1970

An Investigation Of A Gas Measurement Technique Employing Ultraviolet Excitation, Alphonso Vincent Diaz

Physics Theses & Dissertations

A study was undertaken to determine the general applicability of a temperature measurement technique which uses the fluorescence stimulated by a vacuum ultraviolet continuum as the indicator. This study was directed toward determining the temperature of nonradiating carbon monoxide. A number of ultraviolet radiation sources which produced high intensity in the region of l,150 A were investigated. This study led to the conclusion that the technique was not applicable to measurements in carbon monoxide within the present limits of' detectability.
