Fabrication And Performance Of Scalable Bio-Engineered Porous Layers For Efficient Co2 Capture, Mary Sharon Rose Bondugula
Fabrication And Performance Of Scalable Bio-Engineered Porous Layers For Efficient Co2 Capture, Mary Sharon Rose Bondugula
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation addresses the critical challenge of mitigating climate change by advancing CO2 capture technologies. As global CO2 emissions continue to rise, effective methods for capturing and separating CO2 from industrial processes are essential to combat climate change. Existing CO2 capture systems, such as Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) and Temperature Swing Adsorption (TSA), often rely on packed bed designs that face limitations, including poor heat and mass transfer, slow gas diffusion, and low thermal conductivity, reducing their efficiency. To overcome these challenges, this dissertation explores innovative solutions by developing advanced adsorbent coatings and scalable bed configurations.

Novel Nanocomposite Of Carbonized Chitosan-Zinc Oxide-Magnetite For Adsorption Of Toxic Elements From Aqueous Solutions, Dalia A. Ali Eng, Ganna Gaber Ismail Eng.
Chemical Engineering
Herein, a novel nanocomposite (carbonized chitosan-zinc oxide-magnetite, CCZF) was developed to effectively remove toxic elements in water remediation. Combining the high adsorption capacities of chitosan with the magnetic properties of magnetite and the chemical stability of zinc oxide, the combination of these unique properties makes it an efficient and versatile material that offers a sustainable solution for water purification. The (CCZF) nanocomposite was synthesized through the coprecipitation method and characterized using various techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and zeta potential analysis. The results showed …

Chemical Engineering
Water pollution with heavy metals owing to industrial and agricultural activities have become a critical dilemma to humans, plants as well as the marine environment. Therefore, it is of great importance that the carcinogenic heavy metals present in wastewater to be eliminated through designing treatment technologies that can remove multiple pollutants. A novel green magnetic nano-composite called (Carbonized Chitosan-Fe3O4-SiO2) was synthesized using Co-precipitation method to adsorb a mixture of heavy metal ions included; cobalt (Co2+), nickel (Ni2+) and copper (Cu2+) ions from aqueous solutions. The novelty of this study was the synthesis of a new
nano-composite which was green with …
Synthesis Of Durable Zeolite 13x Insertion Coatings And Scaled-Up Experimental Demonstration For Co2 Capture, Daniel Jamil Hocheimy
Synthesis Of Durable Zeolite 13x Insertion Coatings And Scaled-Up Experimental Demonstration For Co2 Capture, Daniel Jamil Hocheimy
Theses and Dissertations
Minimizing the energy requirement for capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from post-combustion sources is critical to efficient industrial decarbonization and subsequent mitigation of the effects of climate change. The current portfolio of CO2 capture technologies includes absorption, membrane separation and packed bed adsorption, which suffer from high energy and temperature requirements, scalability, and location dependency issues. Adsorption-based systems could cater to these concerns; however, their current embodiments primarily use packed adsorbent bed design and electricity-driven vacuum pumps to regenerate them. While simple and easy to fabricate, these designs are not scalable and cannot use heat to regenerate them …
Molecular Simulations Of Mechanical Effects Of Adsorption In Gas And Liquid Phases, Alina Emelianova
Molecular Simulations Of Mechanical Effects Of Adsorption In Gas And Liquid Phases, Alina Emelianova
Dissertations
Fluids adsorbing in nanoporous solids cause high pressures that affect the solids and the properties of the fluids themselves. This work explores the mechanical response of solids to the adsorption of gas and liquid. Chapter 1 outlines the current achievements in investigating the mechanical response of adsorbents to the adsorption process, specifically, the computational approaches to predict adsorption-induced deformation. Chapter 2 introduces the theoretical and computational methods employed in this work. Chapters 3-7 address the design and application of the computational techniques for such prediction in different systems: mesoporous silica, microporous zeolites, and metal-organic frameworks, and Chapter 8 focuses on …
Removal Of Carbamazepine From Drinking Water, Zachary Wiese
Removal Of Carbamazepine From Drinking Water, Zachary Wiese
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Due to the increasing prevalence of prescription medication over the past few
decades, pharmaceuticals have accumulated in various water sources. This has become a
public health concern because many pharmaceuticals have limited research on the effects
of chronic low-level exposure. According to the World’s Health Organization (WHO),
traces of pharmaceuticals products have been reported in different water sources such as
surface waters, wastewater, groundwater, and drinking water.[1] One pharmaceutical of
interest that has been detected in water sources is carbamazepine. Carbamazepine is a
common pharmaceutical prescribed for the treatment of seizure disorders, neuropathic
pain, and various psychological disorders. It’s mechanism …
Mixed Surfactant Systems: Thermodynamics And Applications In Metal Oxide Imprinting, Suvid Joshi
Mixed Surfactant Systems: Thermodynamics And Applications In Metal Oxide Imprinting, Suvid Joshi
Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
In this work we study mixtures of cationic surfactant (CTAB) and sugar based surfactant(s) (octyl beta-D-glucopyranoside (C8G1), dodecyl maltoside (C12G2) and octyl beta-D-xylopyranoside (C8X1)) to understand the non-ideal thermodynamic behavior of the mixtures of cationic and non-ionic surfactants in water and synthesis of imprinted materials. The thermodynamics of micellization, mixing and dilution of these systems are studied using Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC) and the experimental data obtained are modeled with a pseudo-phase separation model with non-ideal mixing described by regular solution theory. It is shown that a model accounting for enthalpy of demicellization and enthalpy of dilution based on McMillan-Mayer …
Activity Coefficients Of Adsorbed Mixtures, Orhan Talu, Jianmin Li, Alan L. Myers
Activity Coefficients Of Adsorbed Mixtures, Orhan Talu, Jianmin Li, Alan L. Myers
Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Experimental and simulated data for adsorption of gas mixtures on energetically heterogeneous surfaces like activated carbon and zeolites exhibit negative deviations from ideality. The deviations are large in some cases, with activity coefficients at infinite dilution equal to 0.1 or less. Similar molecules form ideal mixtures, but molecules of different size or polarity are nonideal. Equations for bulk liquid mixtures (Wilson, Margules, etc.) do not apply to isobars for adsorbed mixtures. A two-constant equation for activity coefficients as a function of composition and spreading pressure is in good agreement with theory, simulation, and experiment.
