Exergy Use In Bioenergetics, Yaşar Demirel
Exergy Use In Bioenergetics, Yaşar Demirel
Papers in Analytical Chemistry
Every developed and adapted biological system extracts useful energy from outside, converts, stores it, and uses for muscular contraction, substrate transport, protein synthesis, and other energy utilizing processes. This energy management in a living cell is called the bioenergetics, and the useful energy is the exergy, which is destroyed in every irreversible process because of the entropy production. The converted exergy is the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) produced through the oxidative phosphorylation coupled to respiration in which the exergy originates from oxidation of reducing equivalents of nutrients. A living cell uses the ATP for all the energy demanding activities; it has …

Design And Simulation Of An Induction Skull Melting System, Taide Tan
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Incorporating volatile actinides, mainly americium into a metallic fuel pin (MFP) has been a serious problem due to americium’s high vapor pressure. An Induction Skull Melting (ISM) system was identified by Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) as a potential furnace design to cast MFPs. Through the development of the ISM system, the nuclear waste feedstock can be melted and injected into the mold for fabricating MFPs in the advanced nuclear fuel cycles. The main phenomena in this system include: induction melting process, casting process and mass transfer process of americium. Issues related to ISM system design for casting MFPs are discussed …
Effect Of Plasma Flux Composition On The Nitriding Rate Of Stainless Steel, Christopher Muratore, Scott G. Walton, D. Leonhardt, Richard F. Fernsler, David D. Blackwell, R. A. Meger
Effect Of Plasma Flux Composition On The Nitriding Rate Of Stainless Steel, Christopher Muratore, Scott G. Walton, D. Leonhardt, Richard F. Fernsler, David D. Blackwell, R. A. Meger
Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
The total ion flux and nitriding rate for stainless steel specimens exposed to a modulated electron beam generated argon-nitrogen plasma were measured as a function of distance from the electron beam axis. The total ion flux decreased linearly with distance, but the nitriding rate increased under certain conditions, contrary to other ion flux/nitriding rate comparisons published in the literature. Variation in ion flux composition with distance was explored with a mass spectrometer and energy analyzer as a possible explanation for the anomalous nitriding rate response to ion flux magnitude. A transition in ion flux composition from mostly N2 1 to …
Gibbs Dividing Surface And Helium Adsorption, Sasidhar Gumma, Orhan Talu
Gibbs Dividing Surface And Helium Adsorption, Sasidhar Gumma, Orhan Talu
Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
All adsorption data is based on the definition of Gibbs dividing surface, which is a purely mathematical transformation. Adsorption measurements in microporous solids necessitate experimental determination of the dividing surface. An international protocol does not exist on how to perform this important measurement. Commonly, helium is assumed not to adsorb and used as a probe molecule for this measurement. Each experimentalist chooses an arbitrary set of conditions, often without even disclosing them, which adds to the confusion in adsorption literature. Here, a self-consistent method for the analysis of helium data is proposed which does not assume non-adsorbing helium …
Experimental Energy Performance Of Open Cooling Towers Used Under Low And Variable Approach Conditions For Indirect Evaporative Cooling Of Buildings, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn
Experimental Energy Performance Of Open Cooling Towers Used Under Low And Variable Approach Conditions For Indirect Evaporative Cooling Of Buildings, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn
Articles
The success of chilled ceilings and displacement ventilation systems as a means of sensible cooling in buildings has prompted a review of evaporative cooling technology as an effective means of generating the required cooling water. When such cooling water is generated at low approach conditions (2–5 K), at the higher temperatures required in these systems (14–18°C), very high levels of availability result. In many north western European locations the levels of availability are such that the prospect of supplanting rather than simply supplementing the refrigeration system, for sensible cooling purposes, arises. The viability of the technique, however, largely depends on …
Indirect Evaporative Cooling Potential In Air-Water Systems In Temperate Climates, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn
Indirect Evaporative Cooling Potential In Air-Water Systems In Temperate Climates, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn
Articles
Recent developments have prompted a review of evaporative cooling technology as an effective means of cooling modern deep plan buildings. Prominent among these developments is the success of high temperature sensible cooling systems, particularly, chilled ceilings, which require a supply of cooling water at 14–18 °C. Crucial to the success of evaporative cooling technology, as a significant means of cooling in modern applications, is the ability to generate cooling water, in an indirect circuit, at a temperature which closely approaches the ambient adiabatic saturation temperature (AST) or wet bulb temperature (WBT). Recent experimental research has demonstrated that it is technically …
Development Of A Model For Induction Heating, Randy Clarksean, Yitung Chen
Development Of A Model For Induction Heating, Randy Clarksean, Yitung Chen
Fuels Campaign (TRP)
There are two coupled equations that must be solved in order to determine the power deposition. The numerical solution of these equations is needed in order to apply a source term within the energy equations. These equations have previously solved in FIDAP. That implementation used modified versions of the momentum and energy equations to provide a mechanism for the solution of two coupled equations. Currently, we want to solve for the induction heating field in addition to the flow field and the energy equation. In order to do this, a mechanism has to be defined within FIDAP to solve these …
The Fission Properties Of Curium Separated From Spent Nuclear Fuel, William Culbreth, Elizabeth Bakker, Jason Viggato
The Fission Properties Of Curium Separated From Spent Nuclear Fuel, William Culbreth, Elizabeth Bakker, Jason Viggato
Separations Campaign (TRP)
Curium poses special problems in the chemical preparation of spent nuclear fuel for transmutation. Once separated from the other minor actinides, the seven curium isotopes in spent fuel can lead to nuclear fission with the subsequent release of a large amount of radiation. Several isotopes of curium also generate a significant amount of heat by radioactive decay. Sustained fission can be avoided by preventing the accumulation by more that a critical mass of curium. The heat generation of curium presents even more restriction on the mass of curium that can safely be contained in one location.
To analyze the nuclear …

Molecular Simulation Of Adsorption: Gibbs Dividing Surface And Comparison With Experiment, Orhan Talu, Alan L. Myers
Molecular Simulation Of Adsorption: Gibbs Dividing Surface And Comparison With Experiment, Orhan Talu, Alan L. Myers
Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
At low temperature near the normal boiling point, computer simulations of adsorption of gases can be compared directly with experiment. However, for adsorptive gas separations in which the gas is adsorbed near or above its critical temperature, absolute simulation variables must be converted to excess variables for comparison with experiment. The conversion of absolute to excess variables requires the helium pore volume of the adsorbent. Lennard-Jones potential parameters for helium gas molecules interacting with the oxygen atoms of silicalite are ε/k = 28.0 K and σ = 2.952 Å. The helium pore volume of silicalite is 0.175 cm …

Effects Of Concentration And Temperature On The Coupled Heat And Mass Transport In Liquid Mixtures, Yaşar Demirel, Stanley I. Sandler
Papers in Thermal Mechanics
Using published experimental data on the thermal conductivity, mutual diffusivity, and heats of transport, the degree of coupling between heat and mass flows has been calculated for binary and ternary nonideal liquid mixtures. The binary mixtures consist of two types: the first is six systems of six-to-eight-carbon straight and branched chain alkanes in chloroform and in carbon tetrachloride; and the second is mixtures of carbon tetrachloride with benzene, toluene, 2-propanone, n-hexane, and 11-octane. The ternary mixture considered is toluene-chlorobenzene-bromobenzene. The published data are available at 35°C, 30°C, and 35°C and ambient pressure. Using the linear nonequilibi-ium thermodynainics (LNET) and the …

Entropy Generation Method To Quantify Thermal Comfort, S. C. Boregowda, S. N. Tiwari, S. K. Chaturvedi
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
The present paper presents a thermodynamic approach to assess the quality of human-thermal environment interaction and quantify thermal comfort. The approach involves development of entropy generation term by applying second law of thermodynamics to the combined human-environment system. The entropy generation term combines both human thermal physiological responses and thermal environmental variables to provide an objective measure of thermal comfort. The original concepts and definitions form the basis for establishing the mathematical relationship between thermal comfort and entropy generation term. As a result of logic and deterministic approach, an Objective Thermal Comfort Index (OTCI) is defined and established as a …
Linear-Nonequilibrium Thermodynamics Theory For Coupled Heat And Mass Transport, Yaşar Demirel, Stanley I. Sandler
Linear-Nonequilibrium Thermodynamics Theory For Coupled Heat And Mass Transport, Yaşar Demirel, Stanley I. Sandler
Yaşar Demirel Publications
Linear-nonequilibrium thermodynamics (LNET) has been used to express the entropy generation and dissipation functions representing the true forces and flows for heat and mass transport in a multicomponent fluid. These forces and flows are introduced into the phenomenological equations to formulate the coupling phenomenon between heat and mass flows. The degree of the coupling is also discussed. In the literature such coupling has been formulated incompletely and sometimes in a confusing manner. The reason for this is the lack of a proper combination of LNET theory with the phenomenological theory. The LNET theory involves identifying the conjugated flows and forces …
Application Of Vibrational Techniques In Determination Of Dynamic Properties Of Agricultural Products-State Of The Arton Of Vibrational Techniques In Determination Of Dynamic Properties Of Agricultural Products-State Of The Art, Silas Kajuna
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
Vibration is one of the techniques employed in the determination of dynamic properties of fruits and vegetables. It entails generation of a mechanical or acoustic vibrational signal which is propagated through the flesh of the agricultural material. A transducer is either attached or held close to the specimen to monitor the propagation of the signal through the specimen. The manner in which the signal is transmitted through the material is analyzed, and the dynamic properties of the specimen which relate to its firmness or its internal being are derived. The technique has been around for the past 30 years or …

Computation Of Flame Base Height Of A Turbulent Diffusion Flame Resulting From A Methane Jet, A. S. Kheireddine, S. K. Chaturvedi, T. O. Mohieldin
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
This work summarizes numerical results for a diffusion flame formed from a cylindrical tube fuel injector, issuing a gaseous methane jet vertically in a quiescent atmosphere. The primary objective is to predict the flame base height and other flame characteristics as a function of the fuel jet velocity. A finite volume scheme is used to discretize the time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations for the reacting flow resulting from the turbulent fuel jet motion. The turbulent stresses, and heat and mass fluxes are computed from a Reynolds stress turbulence model. A chemical kinetics model involving two-step chemistry is employed for the oxidation of …

Copper Alloy-Impregnated Carbon-Carbon Hybrid Composites For Electronic Packaging Applications, S. K. Datta, Surendra N. Tewari, Jorge E. Gatica, W. Shih, L. Bentsen
Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Porous carbon-carbon preforms, based on three-dimensional networks of PAN (Polyacrylonitrile)-based carbon fibers and various volume fractions of chemical vapor-deposited (CVD) carbon, were impregnated by oxygen-free, high-conductivity (OFHC) Cu, Cu-6Si-0.9Cr, and Cu-0.3Si-0.3Cr (wt pct) alloys by pressure infiltration casting. The obtained composites were characterized for their coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and thermal conductivity (K) along the through-thickness and two in-plane directions. One composite, with a 28 vol pct Cu-0.3Si-0.3Cr alloy, showed outstanding potential for thermal management applications in electronic applications. This composite exhibited approximately isotropic thermal expansion properties (CTE = 4 to 6.5 ppm/K) and thermal conductivities (k greater than …
Entropy Generation In A Rectangular Packed Duct With Wall Heat Flux, Yaşar Demirel, Ramazan Kahraman
Entropy Generation In A Rectangular Packed Duct With Wall Heat Flux, Yaşar Demirel, Ramazan Kahraman
Papers in Thermal Mechanics
The entropy generation due to heat transfer and friction has been calculated for fully developed, forced convection flow in a large rectangular duct, packed with spherical particles, with constant heat fluxes applied to both the top (heated) and bottom (cooled) wall. An approximate analytical expression for the velocity profile developed for packed bed with H/dp > 5 has been used together with the energy equation of fully developed flow to calculate the non isothermal temperature profiles along the flow passage. The velocity profile takes into account the increase in the velocity near the wall due to the higher voidage in this …

The Effectiveness Of Film Cooling In A Hypersonic Flowfield With Favorable Pressure Gradients, Julie A. Young
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The impetus of this technical document is to report results of aerothermodynamic cooling of a scramjet nozzle under favorable pressure gradients. The goals of film cooling are to protect the nozzle skin from the high enthalpy combustor flow, reduce regenerative cooling requirements, and decrease nozzle skin friction. A hypersonic nozzle configuration for which experimental data exists was selected as the basis of this numerical study. As a first step, the numerical results of film cooling along a flat plate are compared to previous literature to validate the numerical model. Subsequently, computations are performed to study the effects of varying the …

Behavior And Performance Of Adsorptive Natural Gas Storage Cylinders During Discharge, K. J. Chang, Orhan Talu
Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Adsorbed natural gas (ANG) has the potential to replace compressed natural gas in mobile storage applications, such as in vehicles. Although a substantial research effort has been devoted to ANG, very few studies evaluate the impact of heat of adsorption on system performance. This paper concentrates on the impact of heat of adsorption on ANG performance during discharge, while the gas outflow rate is dictated by the energy demand of the application. The temperature drop and performance loss was measured with commercially available ANG cylinders under realistic conditions. Data show as high as a 37°C temperature drop at …

Heat Transfer In Rarefied Gas At A Gas-Solid Interface, Yaşar Demirel, Satish C. Saxena
Heat Transfer In Rarefied Gas At A Gas-Solid Interface, Yaşar Demirel, Satish C. Saxena
Papers in Physical Chemistry
Modified expressions for the heat-transfer fluxes at the interface of a solid surface and a gas are given for different Knudsen-number regimes. These expressions for diatomic gases contain both a gas-reflection and a thermal accommodation coefficient. Parallel-plate, coaxial-cylindrical and concentric spherical surfaces are considered. A general expression for the thermal accommodation coefficient is based on experimental data. Sample numerical calculations of heat flux in different heat-transfer regimes are presented in terms of the reciprocal Knudsen number.

A New Spray Evaporation Model Based On Droplet Interface Phenomena, Nihad E. Daidzic, Gangolf Kohnen, Martin Sommerfeld
A New Spray Evaporation Model Based On Droplet Interface Phenomena, Nihad E. Daidzic, Gangolf Kohnen, Martin Sommerfeld
Aviation Department Publications
In this work the influence of droplet shape oscillations on droplet evaporation is shown. Through nonlinear mode interactions, turbulence and aerodynamic triggering of vibrations cause by vortex shedding, droplets always oscillates in spray flows. Droplet shape oscillation cause higher evaporation rates through several physical phenomena such as an average increase of the superficial surface area, periodic micro-convection and boundary layer destruction, and local saturation pressure changes due to local curvature effects. The inviscid theory of small-amplitude droplet oscillations was used which resulted in better agreement with the measurement data of droplet size distributions in sprays for different axial coordinates.

Excess Heat Capacity Surfaces For Water-Alkanol Mixtures By The Uniquac Model, Yaşar Demirel, Halime Ö. Paksoy
Papers in Physical Chemistry
Hydroorganic mixtures are industrial solvents that can serve as media to solubilize either water in hydrocarbon or a hydrophobic substance in water. In many cases the solubilizing capability is obtained via a homogeneous complex aqueous mixtures containing an alcohol. Since excess heat capacity CPE, is very sensitive to structural changes in mixtures, concentration and temperature dependence of CPE have been calculated by using the UNIQUAC model for the mixtures methanol(l)-water(%, ethanol(l)-water(2), and l-propanol(l)-water(2). The temperature-dependent parameters of the model estimated directly from CPE data at more than one different isotherm are used in …

Activity Coefficients Of Adsorbed Mixtures, Orhan Talu, Jianmin Li, Alan L. Myers
Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Experimental and simulated data for adsorption of gas mixtures on energetically heterogeneous surfaces like activated carbon and zeolites exhibit negative deviations from ideality. The deviations are large in some cases, with activity coefficients at infinite dilution equal to 0.1 or less. Similar molecules form ideal mixtures, but molecules of different size or polarity are nonideal. Equations for bulk liquid mixtures (Wilson, Margules, etc.) do not apply to isobars for adsorbed mixtures. A two-constant equation for activity coefficients as a function of composition and spreading pressure is in good agreement with theory, simulation, and experiment.
A Study Of The Thermodynamic And Heat Transfer Characteristics Of Two-Phase Two-Component Flow With Application To A Solar-Assisted Heat Pump, Walid A. Aziz
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Two-phase flow of single component refrigerants has been studied, theoretically and experimentally, for many CFCs, in many industrial applications, including the solar-assisted heat pump system. This study extends the thermodynamic and heat transfer analysis in the phase transition boiling region, to newly proposed refrigerant mixtures, which are candidates for replacing the classical CFCs for future HVAC applications. The goal of this study is to develop a methodology, to design the collector/evaporator tubes of a solar-assisted heat pump, using a binary refrigerant mixture as the working fluid. The method is implemented numerically as a computer algorithm. In order to do that, …
Transient Body Force Effects On The Dryout And Rewet Of A Heated Capillary Structure, Michael K. Reagan
Transient Body Force Effects On The Dryout And Rewet Of A Heated Capillary Structure, Michael K. Reagan
Theses and Dissertations
A transient, one-dimensional numerical code was developed to model the liquid flow in a non-uniformly heated, axial square groove. The groove was subjected to transient body forces up to approximately 0.51 m/s2 . Axial variation in meniscus levels, shear stress and heat transfer between the groove wall and the liquid, axial conduction through the liquid, evaporation and body forces were accounted for in the model. Dryout and rewet of the groove were allowed; the front location was determined using conservation of mass and linear extrapolation. A physical experiment was performed with a stainless steel plate into which eight square …
