This thesis attempts to demonstrate an approach to secondary art education which will emphasize the student's own experience as the basis of his art work. Furthermore, the students' learning activities are given a broader context by the inclusion of material from the history of art within the framework of the studio course. Such an integrated approach can give meaningful insight to the adolescent as he deals with experience in a visual form.

The main purpose in the formation of this curriculum guide for the teaching of art in the elementary school is to offer the elementary teachers of Longview School District additional teaching ideas, suggestions and activities for the art program. The intention, too, is to interweave the art activity itself with historical development and origins of art along with the concept of the basic art elements. In presenting this guide, the writer hopes to foster opportunities for increasing aesthetic awareness among teachers and students as art relates to our environment.

Art educators have expressed the need for art teachers with more qualifications and for more evidence of creativity and successful art experience. The purpose of this project is to illustrate the importance of the interrelationship between the action-oriented sensory capacities of the artist and the verbal-analytical capacities of the teacher, and in so doing to develop a vehicle through which an art teacher might demonstrate the necessary proficiency in at least one medium within the fine arts.
