Barbara Reed: Visionary Storyteller And Dramatist, Jane M. Gangi
Barbara Reed: Visionary Storyteller And Dramatist, Jane M. Gangi
Education Faculty Publications
Barbara Reed, now in her eighties, is an individual who, for over fifty years, has been a leader in both children's drama and storytelling (for children and adults). It is because of her tenacious love of the performing arts that they flourish—albeit in some places more than others-for us today. Because of her, the imaginative lives of children and adults continues cyclically, each generation passing onto the next the rich experiences to be found in drama and storytelling.
A Midsummer Night's Dream--A Creole Creation: Directing Shakespeare In A High School Setting, Laurel Renee Kash
A Midsummer Night's Dream--A Creole Creation: Directing Shakespeare In A High School Setting, Laurel Renee Kash
Master of Theater Production Graduate Projects
A full-length production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream was rehearsed and performed at Sunset High School in Portland, Oregon. The production was set in New Orleans during Mardi Gras in 1926. Research was conducted on Shakespeare's life, appropriate acting methods, and the play's historical and cultural context including lighting properties, setting, music, and costumes. Design concept statements were developed, the play was produced, and the experience was considered critically, both as an artistic production and as a learning experience.

Portraits Of Leadership: Relationships Among Gender, Age, And Creativity, Diane Caton Desrosiers
Portraits Of Leadership: Relationships Among Gender, Age, And Creativity, Diane Caton Desrosiers
Educational Studies Dissertations
This Portraits of Leadership research focuses on using children's artwork to study girls' perceptions of leadership. 244 school age children were asked to draw their image of a leader and to write descriptions of why they chose this person as a leader. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted to determine the relationships among gender, age, and creativity and choice of leader in drawing and written descriptions. Results indicate that, though both girls and boys chose males as leaders more often than females, girls' portraits conformed to the literature regarding gender roles and traditional leadership styles. Implications are suggested for educational …
Notes Toward A Theory Of Dialogue, Grace Deniston-Trochta, Jane Vanderbosch, Ed Check
Notes Toward A Theory Of Dialogue, Grace Deniston-Trochta, Jane Vanderbosch, Ed Check
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Multiple dimensions of dialogue as pedagogical practice are examined in the following three essays. In the first piece, “When Life Imitates Art: Notes on the Nature of Dialogue,” poet and essayist Jane Vanderbosch reflects about the politics of silence and voice in graduate school. She analyzes how power and politics charge the atmosphere of the classroom. In “The Pedagogy of Dialogue: A Relation Between Means and End,“ Grace Deniston-Trochta focuses on self-examining the possibility of dialogue in a large “pit” classroom. She proposes teacher as listener/learner, a teacher who is self-reflective and respectful. In the final essay, “Managing the Silence …

Examining Biases And Prejudices: Implications For Art Education, Shirley Hayes Yokley
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
In this paper, I combine an overview of Elisabeth Young-Bruehl’s (1996) socio-psychological examination of group prejudices with a critical examination of artwork by Juan Sánchez to illustrate how issues-based studies of works of art help teachers and students examine and resist biases and prejudices that contribute to oppressive or hegemonic actions.

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
The theme of the Journal of Social Theory in Art Education, Volume 19/20 is Empowerment Through Dialogue. Empowerment is a difficult issue—for example, how do we as art educators “empower” those who don’t want or feel the need to be empowered? Can we ever empower others or can empowerment only occur through self-reflections? How do we engage in dialogue with our students, our teachers, and our colleagues? Just as with empowerment, dialogue cannot be forced upon us. Through the various dialogues that run through the articles in this volume, we see that dialogue is something that we choose to engage …

The Ghost Writer, Amy Brook Snider
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
The core of this article was originally published in an issue on “empowerment” in the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design [NSCAD] Papers in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1988. Not surprisingly, the article is also related to the theme of this Journal of Social Theory in Art Education—“dialogue as empowering pedagogy,” describing as it does how a teacher and her student used the medium of letters as a space for communication and reflection.
Seeing Childhood In Art Education, Paul Duncum
Seeing Childhood In Art Education, Paul Duncum
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Art education theory and practice sees children as constructivist learners, but postmodern theory teaches us to see children with multiple and fragmented identities. Postmodern theory is used to examine childhood as a site of divergent discourses concerned with persistent adult attempts to control both actual children and the concept of childhood. Many alternative conceptions find pictorial form in the mass media, from abused child to nightmarish threat. This paper focuses on the idea of children as rabid consumers. It examines television advertisements aimed at children, especially by McDonald’s, Mattel and Cap Toys. Implications for the classroom as well as art …

Teaching For The Aesthetic Experience, Margaret G. Black
Teaching For The Aesthetic Experience, Margaret G. Black
Educational Studies Dissertations
This study answered the question, "How to teach for the Aesthetic Experience in the visual arts?" Six women art educators served as study participants. The researcher identified five components of aesthetic experience: perception, cognition, imagination, emotion, and discovery. Informed by theories of conversational teaching methods, aesthetic development, and adult development, the researcher designed and executed a qualitative case study that incorporated all five components. Art viewing, art making, and evaluative response were the tools used in the study to foster aesthetic understanding.

Portfolios--From Traditional To Digital : Research For Understanding And Implementation In The Art Classroom, Deb Ann Richmann
Portfolios--From Traditional To Digital : Research For Understanding And Implementation In The Art Classroom, Deb Ann Richmann
Graduate Research Papers
Portfolios are a method in which educators assess student work. The traditional portfolio is generally a collection of papers stored for an intended purpose. There are many types and purposes for portfolios. Technology, however, has yielded some inventive methods for managing the many papers in the portfolio in a digital format. This term, digital portfolio, represents a technological presentation of student work. The differences in hardware, software, and peripherals have been investigated in this review. Along with the tools for management, the implementation in an art classroom is explored. The sustaining impact of the digital portfolio in the art classroom …

Understanding Children's Perspectives: Sixth Graders Talk About Their Art, Christine Mulcahey
Understanding Children's Perspectives: Sixth Graders Talk About Their Art, Christine Mulcahey
Christine Mulcahey
Abstract This exploratory study investigates children's perspectives on artistic representation. Unstructured weekly interviews with a group of sixth graders for ten weeks allowed for a negotiated and shared understanding of children's views. The talk of the children, in relation to a collection of each child's drawings, constitute the primary data for the study. Analysis of interview data suggests three primary themes: categories for understanding, a children's world, and children's talk about art. The children's categories for thinking about ideas and events appear to be flexible and tentative, and to allow for variation and subdivisions. The children's conversations suggest a distinct …
